Trick for the wet shoes coming out of the snow...dollar store shower caps! Knock your feet outside, swing legs in and place a cap on each shoe...bonus tip: have your house shoes ready to slip on! Always did this with my ski boots, snow boots, and winter hikers...always nice to slip the feet into softies! BTW AWESOME SNOW SCENERY AT THE BEGINNING!!!
Shoe hack: I line my original boots box with a large plastic bag for when they're wet, and they don't take up more space in the wee van home or make a mess.
I’ve also seen people use puppy training pads underneath wet shoes in the van… easy and disposable. Bags around wet shoes may not allow them to dry properly😁
I lived in a Class C for over 3 years as a travel RN. I spent the winters in Florida as the hospitals were packed with sick old people, then the summers in New England. Hospitals would hire for 13 week assignments and I traveled with the jobs following the good weather. The jobs paid for an apartment or my RV park rent. Even with those destinations I was uncomfortable. Too hot or too cold or too damp. Nice thing was it was three 12 hour shifts a week so I had time to explore. I saved up enough to buy a house. Now I'm old, so glad I own my home. I do have a high top van for play, but love getting home to my full size bathroom, washer/dryer, high speed internet. etc... Hauling in water and hauling out poop gets old.

I am doing this right now. I’m a CNA though and started doing local agency in north florida. Now a year and a half later I’m on my 2nd contract. This one in Massachusetts, living in my van 😮. It’s been great the past three months but I just, after much contemplation decided to extend my contract. It’s such a great set up for me and the pay is good enough to make it worth it. So I decided to stay. Now I’m in overdrive to research surviving winter in a van. Anyways reading your comment made me so happy!!
I live in upstate NY. I gave up paying bloated rents for vanlife! I live in my 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT! And I absolutely love it! I save a boatload of money, and travel now! I stay warm in it as it has climate control as well! Be safe My friend!🙏
How do you keep warm through the night in the van? I have the same van and I'm only using it for warm weather camping but I'd like to camp in some colder temps but can't figure out a safe way to stay warm overnight.
I'm in NJ and I agree 100%. Rent is sky high. They want at LEAST $1600-1700/month for a one bdrm apt. That's just ridiculous. I am almost ready to join van life. Only thing that has me hesitating is trying to figure out how to deal with the cold winters. I'm not sure how well solar panels would do here with those gray skies in the winter. I heard about climate control in those vehicles now but you have to keep it running all night?
@@ladycats3810 Hi! My van actually has climate control. I have remote start as well, so if it gets mad cold, I can just let the van warm up, and it shuts off by itself after 10 minutes! Technology is great!
@@MonkeyhammerTP Yes, my van has climate control. And also remote start, where I can lay in bed and start it. It runs 19-15 minutes until warm, then shuts off automatically! Technology is great! But, you can also get a me. Buddy propane heater. Just be careful with it and use a carbon monoxide detector if using propane!

@@fjb4932I’d huck those nasty things out in the snow. They push out lil tootsie rolls that’ll clear a room. They track litter everywhere. They leave the grossest smells.
One thing Matt, you don't seem to have time to get bored. Love the way Penny and Stella, just stare at you like they understand every word, then do what they want! Stay safe x
I live with my uncle and he also owns an RV, that me and him go camping in all the time, and one thing that me and him BOTH agree on, is that a camping trip is not a camping trip unless you go camping in the snow, at least in our opinions.❤🤪

A tip to keep warm air in your space; hang a thick sheet over the inside of your door. It will keep most of the warm/ cold air in. I don't heat my whole house all day, only the living room and I block it in with that method. Works great.
You’re supposed to put the hot chocolate packet in the cup and just run it straight through with hot water into the cup of hot chocolate lol no need to put it in the reusable Keurig cup
I love your channel I'm 65 your neighbor in Northern Michigan. Love the snow. Living in a bit larger compartment. A 30ft sleeps 9 camper. But no water in winter or toilet So improvisation is crucial. Wish we would have a decent snowy winter.. again before I wake up on the wrong side of the grass as is said. Be safe. Blessings to you.
I really enjoyed the “average day” aspect of this video. I’m glad you have ways to stay warm. Y’all Canadians know how to handle winter. Love to Penney and Stella!

You are incredibly entertaining!! I appreciate the birdseye view into every day life in a van....it's a nice change from watching the multiple overnight campers, who chase the snowstorms, cook their meals, and shovel snow. You come across as the real deal, and I appreciate watching your daily adventures. Thank you for sharing!!!🇺🇸
Great video Matthew. My husband says you have a great voice for doing things like voiceovers ... I am sure that was meant as a compliment... I told him you like what you do! Take care! Always enjoy watching your videos.
I agree. I mean, I think he could actually make money as a voice actor. He's got a really great speaking voice--and if one can do accents as well, so much the better.

As a backup heating method, you could buy a Westinghouse electric blanket for about three or four hours of heat in your EB3A Bluetti. Probably safer than the diesel. Plus, if you buy some deicer and windshield wiper fluid from Rainx or Prestone, that could get rid of the ice on the solar panels. Kitty litter can absorb liquids for emergencies too. Best wishes to you this holiday season!
if I wasn't able to build a survival shelter for my van. I would at least hunker down, out of the wind, and make sure u remove any barrier between you and the van. make skin-to-metal contact to keep warm, and an emergency mylar survival blanket for the van
@@cliffontheroad interesting! A couple of my friends have the jacket and pant that heat up and they rave about them every winter. Granted they do short term camping in the mountains for skiing and such, so perhaps they don't have to worry as much about how quickly they battery runs out? Good to know though!
Oh Matthew...I laughed to hard when you filled your K cup with the hot chocolate with marshmellows in it. I'm enjoying rain on Vancouver Island. So sorry that you are having winter however soon enough I will be with all in Calgary enjoying the cold too. Much love and hugs

I'm posting on my Husbands' account. He passed away May 5th, 2019. With that being said, we were campers and cat lovers. My sister gifted me an electric blanket this summer 2022 and I use it daily, 24/7 on my bed. You want the kiddos to go into a coma comfort, gift yourself and the kids one. The cost I believe is less than 2 cents an hour on a medium setting. Game changer. I live in Sudbury and I get the cold winters and drafty windows. Would love to see more of your videos..Dagmara (and yes, no more marshmallows in your Kurig)
Hello Matthew 😊 I used to live in Utica NY. To keep the solar panels ice FREE..we used moving pads to cover our WINDSHIELD AND SOLAR PANELS!😁 Cover up at nite & remove in the morning 🌄💚😁 and I am from the" FOLEY CLAN". 💚🍀🍻
I only follow 4 van/truck lifers, Nikki (fantastic National park hiker gal), Eva (traveling the whole Pan American Highway with a Shepard puppy), Ladi and Margaret building their 2nd master van in Europe and you Matt, urban van-lifer guy. I have noticed that one of the most important skills needed is scoping out your power needs every single day! And keeping on top of them. No messing around. That’s a BIG ONE!. More on that kind of thing will be interesting. One project in your future, solar panels that can move to a 45° angle to catch all the rays, all the time!

I'm gonna subscribe to this one since he's going to have the same issues I would have in van life. Want to keep watching for issues upgrades, solutions and challenges🥰. Thanks for sharing!!!
That episode with the instant hot cocoa in the k-cup made my morning! The dog had gotten me up early on a chilly morning and opening the van door to maneuver her out let the remaining warmth out, so I was craving something hot to drink. However, by the time the episode ended, I was warmed by laughter. Thank you, Sir!!!

I have two of those diesel heaters in my van and driving through southern Canada in winter (-20 f) I’ve left them on while driving all the time and had no problem with them. Also for my larger heater(5kw) I decided to ditch the usual 10L tank use a 20L jerry can as the fuel tank for my heater, this way I have to refill half as much which is really nice.

Hey Matt - I live in Calgary as well. Just a little help for you (I don't know if you already know this) - go to the Somerset train station and go to the park-n-ride, there are some spots with block heaters. The spots I saw with block heaters are the areas close to the Somerset community. They had it a few years back, not sure if they still have them there but it's worth checking. Good luck!

3 Keurigs later I can tell you even the pre-packaged hot chocolate and other instant powder beverages open the top pour in your cup and just brew water. Hot chocolate is the worst culprit to clogs the needles and after a while it kills the motor ☹️ Great video you can keep the snow at your end 😂 Much love 🤗🤗

Right!! I'm here in Kitchener, Ontario and we are having some amazing weather. It was a bit windy out there last night but what a lovely November day we had. I feel bad for Mathew having to deal with that damn snow already.
@@lifewithpugwinkle Crazy ass weather, then supposed to flip mid November..... but no climate change!! Fake news!! except for the flood, hurricane and fire victims... real for them.
You go north to Edmonton or cruise into Regina Saskatchewan you will not be comfortable in a van , at times it drops to -35'C without the wind ....for 3 weeks or longer . Overnight lows can drop into -40's again with no wind . Edmonton can freeze the privates pretty easy too. I lived in Calgary Alberta for just over 6 years and winter there is mellow .
We had those temps here in Calgary last year as well, you’d be surprised what you can get through when you do your research and build the van yourself 😊
Is that near where that crazy young woman harmed her side bf? Beautiful area. Seem like really salt of the Earth people there too, besides that one chick. Cheers 😀
@laurasalo6160 I loved the summertime! Gorgeous lakes. My grandparents lived on the same lake on the Rez. In the winter we would be ice-skating. Summer fishing and swimming. My auntie had a house on the lake too. Bass Lake. Very small. Near Shawano, WI. That's the nearest town to the REZ.
Before you reached your workplace, there were 2 people walking on the street! I couldn’t believe it! Watching your video I just want to turn on my heat pad and crawl further into my blanket.
I love that you noticed that! From a filmmaking stand point I thought it turned out quite nicely with one on the left and the other on the right and showed just how determined some people are to get to work 😂 thank you for watching Jen!
Very interés in vlog..Kcup good but I've used the reusable one just so I can have hot water for tea or I pour chocolate powder packages or scoop into cup n let hot water into cup n stir..no dirty reusable kcup👍
As a fellow Canadian also living on the cold prairies, I do admire your grit and mental fortitude to live a life like this. Just to create your van must have taken a lot of time, and thought -- right. This is the 1st video I've seen of yours, and maybe my questions will be answered in other videos of yours. My questions are, where do you park your Van overnight ? like big store lots ? or just anywhere that looks good, or do you rent a parking stall ? Where do you put all your clothing in that little van ? where do you take a shower ? All those everyday questions we take for granted if your living in a house or apartment. Anyways would like to know Matthew, and enjoyed your Video, and your great attitude toward life. Also does your daughter visit you in your van ?

My mom told me, “ Leave the house dressed like you’re never coming back inside.” My brother and I could play in the snow longer than any of the other kids as we were dressed properly. And we knew how to make epic snow forts, killer snow men, had sleds that broke the sound barrier and knew to throw snowballs that could kill a man at 30 yards. Oh, Canada! 🇺🇸🇨🇦

Regarding the smell of diesel on hands: whenever I get ready to change oil in a vehicle, work with paint, or other projects, I apply hand lotion to my hands. Even with gloves, which sometimes get removed. Lotion fills the pores of skin to help wash off the offending materials.

You would have to find a way to keep the kitties from knocking it over. But, a Crisco (vegetable shorting) candle can burn around 30 days with only one wick. Put three in it and it can keep your van fairly warm. Use a tapered candle(s) or twist print paper into a wick. There are several videos on "Crisco Candles". Store brand vegetable shorting is around $5 here in the U. S. Nice little back up if the heater breaks.

I live in Canada as well and camp in a tent with my family at my kids' motocross races beginning in April. Although I'm not camping in the dead of winter, the Gobi Heat battery powered electric blanket has helped a ton with my thermal sleeping bag. 2 celcius in a tent is all of a sudden really warm and my kids sleep no issues all night. Each battery (size of a pocket battery) lasts for 6 hours on the low setting which is incredibly warm for what it is.

A tip to keep warm air in your space; hang a thick sheet over the inside of your door. It will keep most of the warm/ cold air in. I don't heat my whole house all day, only the living room and I block it in with that method. Works great.

A van lifer that actually works a job. Good stuff. Better than all the other dosers.
As an alternative: My wife uses an electric heating pad for a boost of warmth. After all, in a van, space is a premium. So is electricity. And cash.
if I wasn't able to build a survival shelter for my van.
I would at least hunker down,
out of the wind,
and make sure u remove any barrier between you and the van.
make skin-to-metal contact to keep warm,
and an emergency mylar survival blanket for the van
There are also batter powered jackets, shirts, socks and pants/leggings. They are spendy, but damn are they worth it.
@@MsBELLE7 2nd hand, all reports of electric socks are they drain batteries quick. As for roof solar, cover with plastic sheet when ice expected.
@@cliffontheroad interesting! A couple of my friends have the jacket and pant that heat up and they rave about them every winter. Regarding the smell of diesel on hands: whenever I get ready to change oil in a vehicle, work with paint, or other projects, I apply hand lotion to my hands. Even with gloves, which sometimes get removed. Lotion fills the pores of skin to help wash off the offending materials.

So glad to see another cat daddy! I'm not in Canada but still cold in my van. I can't afford all the hook ups you have but an alternative idea would be appreciated. Keeping myself and 11 yr old cat warm but safe is daunting.
G’day from Australia,
Just read your comment and thought you might like to look at my set, camp locations and camp cook ups.
Hope you enjoy and travel safely

Hello Mathew😊. So happy to come across your video. I am a 70 year old grandma ( that photo of me is 15 years ago😆) and I was flabbergasted at how much you look like my grandson Jordan. He also is a single parent with a little girl. I hope to see more of your videos. I live in Orlando Florida stay safe and God bless you. Ellen Tau
Cats shouldn.t be living in a van. That.s abuse

I thank my lucky stars every day for my warm dry house in a tropical climate. You need a medal for living that way….👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

As a Canadian I love the snow, how condescending to say we need a medal to live this way.
@@Keekonuts Not condescending at all..just saying I admire you fortitude to deal with that type of weather….🏖.
