This is the best diagnosis video on UA-cam!!! I can't believe how straight up your narration is. Hands down the most informative and easy to understand tutorial EVER. Thank you and hope to learn a lot more from you sir!!!
Agree!. Good points especially when it is quite easy to mis-diagnose the problem_ injectors, fuel pump itself, or even so-called suction control valves and pump relay all can cause the problem. I once had even a problem with OBD2 not reading anything to show the right codes expect "no pressure on injector". Took a costly path replacing things (SCV;s which were ok) until found the high pressure fuel pump (on the engine, not in tank) was the only faulty bit. Wish I had seen this first.
Somehow I didn't realize until now that a standalone check valve was a potential fix for one built into an in tank fuel pump. My dad's 2001 GMC Savana 1500 5.7L has been experiencing long crank times for quite some time. I already ordered a fuel pump, but we've been trying to schedule a time for a buddy with a lift to help out. Today it decided to stop starting altogether. I was able to install a Dorman check valve from the local Advance Auto Parts along with an extra fuel filter, hose, and clamps, then start the engine with starting fluid. We ran the engine for a couple minutes, then shut it off, and it was able to restart again right away without help. We shut it off, waited an hour, and it was again able to start right away without help. This gave us the flexibility to run the full tank of fuel down some and get it scheduled with the lift. Thank you!!
Have been concerned for a while about why my 2003 Trailblazer was slow to start and dreading the expense of dropping the fuel tank and replacing the fuel pump. Thanks for a clear and concise presentation.

10 seconds in I gave a thumbs up. Clear video, clean audio and concise instructions. After 3 days of searching for help I'm glad to have found this video.
had to do this on my 2016 Tundra this week. There is no schrader valve to test pressure, I cobbled something together by teeing into the line, set a gauge in there, sure enough low pressure. Tested the regulator by removing it & using an air compressor to slowly raise the pressure up until it passes & regulates the pressure at 50psi. Now to prove the pump.... I made up a small un-vented fuel tank (pressure tank) using a length of 1-1/2" steel pipe & some fittings including a cap with a shrader valve installed into it. Filled the pipe up with a couple of pints of gas & pressurized the test "tank" using a pancake compressor on the seat next to me to supply the fuel rail at the engine at 45-50psi. Wahey! I could now drive the truck around... Diagnosis proved, just waiting for a new pump to arrive now. Dropping the tank with a hundred litres of gasin it was another job though, there was no way to siphon or drain it in situ!
i guess im asking randomly but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!

Best description of fuel pressure loss areas I have ever seen or heard of ; Toyota has a bulletin out regarding 2002 Tacoma 2.7 L engine that has a fuel pump check valve problem which fits the description of the problem I am having with Tacoma. I told a few mechanics about the inline check valves I use to used many years ago and they don't understand me??? You are first class as I was a mechanic for most of my life dating back to the early sixties into the late 80's.
Extremely useful demonstration. Fuel pressure diagnosis demystified. I have this exact starting problem when the engine has been sitting a few hours, now I know how to solve the mystery. One thought, there is a potential fourth source of a leak, the unions at the tank, fuel filter, between flex and hard lines along the plumbing, and between the rail(s) and individual injectors. Being an external leak, a visual inspection with system pressurized should find it. Hopefully before something catches fire...

This video is the best automotive instructional video I’ve ever watched. It was very systematic, but I think going straight to the bicycle pump first would have been a good idea.
Excellent video. I believe this is the problem with my 2003 GMC Sierra 1500. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and crank position sensor as a shotgun approach at first. The issue is that after the the truck is turned off for more than a 1/2 hour or so, it takes a very long crank or multiple tries to get it fired back up. I found that if you prime the fuel by turning the key on a 2-3 times (not all the way to the firing position) and listen to the fuel pump pumping fuel to the engine, it gets the fuel needed to fire the next time yo turn the key to the ignition position. This works every time. So it makes sense that is probably a check valve issue. But i will check the pressure from the fuel tank and to the engine first to verify.
Your have one of the best explained video on UA-cam. I have watch hundreds of them and none is as good as yours! Now I can see why my car lose fuel pressure. Thanks for letting me know about fuel pressure👍
Very good and well made video. So basically, the only problem if you don't do what you did as the fix, is the slow to start. No actual physical damage or problem. Interesting indeed. Thanks so much.
I have to admit I was freaking out cuz I had the same problem with another car I had a Pontiac and your video explains everything simple to understand and with a fix that's not $300 with everything going on the world right now it's just my price because my last car I replaced the fuel pump I replaced everything what a headache diagnosing is everything

You may have just solved a problem I’ve had for a year. 4 mechanics couldn’t find the problem. I have to cycle my fuel pump twice before starting. Because it’s loosing pressure. THANKYOU !!!!!!!
@@hazelpieterse853 well I’ve replaced everything so far except the fuel pump. Now it only happens after driving for an hr or more. And things get hot. Probably the fuel pump all along.
I was intimidated by this problem, thank you for making this video. I now know my fuel pressure regulator is the problem, and the brand new fuel pump I bought will just be a life lesson.
Excellent video! The only thing it misses is a scenario, where a fuel pressure regulator located on the fuel pump. In those cases, is there a one-way fuel check valve besides a regulator on the pump? Also, in those case, how can you differentiate whether the problem is a fuel regulator or a pump. (I have a slow pressure drop with my 2015 Toyota Venza LE)
Thank you very much, sir. Not only is your video spot on, you have great presentation. Simple words, nice short sentences. This video would make a total layman smarter.
Is it safe to crank the engine while all the injectors are out and spraying atomised fuel to the engine bay? I thought during this operation the ignition system is also fully operational and producing high ignition energy into the system. Thank you for your time and effort for posting this video. It was very professional and informative. All the best. Cheers!!!
I sure wish I had found this video before I sold my F250 with a "bad fuel pump" before I sold it for almost nothing. I did not think I could drop the tank. But I could have installed this check point.... Darn! Good video.
very good presentation. another possibility, even more simple, is the fuel tank does not reverse vent due to a bad gas cap. so drawing fuel out of the tank (by simply driving awhile), builds up the vacuum. The next time you try to crank the engine, the vacuum prevents fuel from entering the fuel line (the fuel pump pressure cannot overcome the vacuum reverse pressure). If your car cranks well after resting overnight, or doesn't crank well after driving awhile (especially on cool days), you may have this problem.
I think this just might be my problem! Thanks to you and the videomaker! My garage is unable to find the problem! But this is exactly what i m experiencing. When my car is cold it drives normal, but when it s heated up it starts failing to give gas and even stops altogether on the road. Dangerous.
Hi ! Brilliant video with lots of no-nonsense, clear explanations at each and every step of the diagnostic precedure. I have a 1993 1.9 Peugeot 205 GTi which has a very inconsistent start/run/re-start condition. Today it (might) start and run reasonably well - tomorrow, the car might not start at all, running the battery down. I know the FPR [Fuel Pressure Regulator] works fine - it is brand new and the correct model/spec' for the car (Bosch 3.5 bar). I intend to uncouple the Fuel Rail including the Injectors and crank up the motor to check the spray pattern against a strip of card/paper exactly as in your Video. If l don't get anything from the Injectors while cranking over the motor (with a fully charged battery), do you have a diagnostic procedure l can follow to eliminate the very frustrating current situation of sometimes start, sometimes no start. I would be grateful for your expertise in this matter. I have not, as yet, tested the Fuel Pressure arriving at the Fuel Rail. The specified pressure for my model is 3Bar. Best regards, Paul
Thank you. Very good. 👍 We added a secondary fuel pump, external electric , using fuel rated check valves. Long desert hauls at night got caught with no pressure - once and never again. The cost of the tow... Cheers!
Great break down and very informative. I replaced my fuel pump the other day. My cars working great but the whole homemade check valve was brilliant. I wish I watched your video before 😂
Oh my god. I'm a single woman having to depend on you tube to guide me thru diagnosing and fixing my car. I was fixing to change my fuel pump but I'm going to try this first! I'm definitely subscribing
Outstandingly thorough, concise, and ingenuous; albeit unorthodoxed but effective (the check-valve hack). The world is a slightly better place because of this video. Thank you.
2005 BMW X3 great car we bought it used and always hard to to start. Changed out a lot of Vacuum hoses and other parts as these cars are prone to vacuum leaks. Even changed out the mass flow controller, got a little better but still misses when stepping hard on accelerator. With what I learned on this video I just might fix a problem that 4 BMW specially repair shop in my town have not been able to figure out.
Great Video 👍 What you've done towards the end of the vid is called Fabrication... Nice... Only 4 wrenches because you didn't discuss disconnecting spark first as a safety precaution. The delivery was great, your speech was nice and clear, slow enough for a newbie in this particular arena... I would of given you 3 stars but I totally dig your delivery! 🛠️🛠️🛠️🛠️
Awesome video, still left me with a lot of questions though. Where do I plug in a fuel pressure gauge? If it happens to be a bad injected do I need to replace all of them or just the one? How did you know it was the fuel check and not the fuel pump? I changed both fuel pumps on my car and I'm still having this problem, would that narrow it down to the regulate or injecters? If you could help me diagnose this problem I'd appreciate it heaps! Thank you
Here’s a hard one, 1995 SC300, Car is super rich and can’t idle, threw maf code, changed maf, no codes, still runs rich(black smoke) can’t idle. Changed ALL manifold/tb gaskets, o2 sensors, fuel regulator, fuel filter, injectors, ecu rebuild(leaky capacitors), air filter, vacuum lines, coolant temp sensor. Problem still there. I can hold rpm, but it runs rich and throws black smoke. let off the gas and it drops to 400rpm< and eventually dies. I’ve changed plugs, wires, cap/rotor, still the same. Gas keeps getting into fuel, no water in oil. What’s going on? any ideas? it keeps over fueling, no codes thrown. OBD1…HELP!
@@UTP_ENT so i did end up bypassing the fuel pump ecu and now the car can stay running if i stay on the gas, no black smoke or richness, BUT now it can’t rev pass 1500rpm. I did change the TPS and heard sometimes it need calibration? But other videos i’ve watched they didn’t calibrate and it ran fine after changing. All my symptoms now are basically like a bad TPS. Can’t idle or rev up. But can run if I feather the gas.
Wow! Thank you, very good explanations, thank you for being this detailed i don't have a loss of pressure but this guide helped me diagnose my own issue, due to your diagnostics!
Excellent video on analyzing the location of a fuel pressure leak. Remove the fuel filter then use a bicycle pump to pressurize the line going back to the engine to 20psi. If the pressure holds, it's not a leaking fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator. Now check the line to the fuel tank. At 20 psi, if the pressure drops immediately, it's a defective fuel pump check valve. I just need to figure out how to attach my bicycle pump to a fuel line.
Great idea really… I’d use the simple solution of jamming an old valve stem from my neighbor’s bike in a piece of fuel line a good rubbery glue might help too

A+ Diagnosis videos. Very clear, very simple, and to the point.
This video has helped me to finally understand why my car has a slow start. Thanks for you help
Thank you! Very helpful and clearly explained. To the point, without extra unnecessary "filler".
What a brilliantly done video, good sir! Such a clear and logical explanation of the diagnostic process is hard to come by.
An excellent way of diagnosing and explaining, especially choosing the words for good communication.
Very good and well made video. So basically, the only problem if you don't do what you did as the fix, is the slow to start. No actual physical damage or problem. Interesting indeed. Thanks so much.
Thank you for this in depth video. You are saving so many people the headache of knowing how to diagnose the problem. This is a 10/10 video
Thanks man! I just realized how with a few minutes of patience anyone can save lots of money(and time btw)
Great vid! You have my like.
Amazing repair, even more amazing trouble shooting training for the average person WITHOUT any special expensive tools.Kudos Man
best vid on you tube and I learnt more about diesel fuel system in 9.50 minutes than I have in 30 years
I love the way you solved the problem cheaply and a lot of less work. What is it the name of the valve you put on. Thanks
Fuel line check valve
what a wounder-full and useful guide on how to solve the vehicle issues .wow .i encourage every one to follow you .very clear sound very slow explanation and very useful tips and steps to how to solve the issue . i am glad to see such you-tuber like to be followup .cheer.
You may have just solved a problem I’ve had for a year. 4 mechanics couldn’t find the problem. I have to cycle my fuel pump twice before starting. Because it’s loosing pressure.
THANKYOU !!!!!!!
What was the problm
@@hazelpieterse853 well I’ve replaced everything so far except the fuel pump. Now it only happens after driving for an hr or more. And things get hot. Probably the fuel pump all along.
You are a great teacher it's in your voice.you talk slowly so I understand, good job 👍
excellent explanations, no woffle, no BS, brief and to the point. Well done.
(I have a slow pressure drop with my 2015 Toyota Venza LE)
my scenario is the same :(
Thank you very much, sir. Not only is your video spot on, you have great presentation. Simple words, nice short sentences. This video would make a total layman smarter.
👍
Very sharp and to the point, what a blessing you have provided to the masses,Thank you!
Darn! Good video.
This is one of the best informative learning & diagnostic video I've seen so far. This fuel issue is the biggest problem with older GDI vehicles.
Excellent! Intelligent, methodical, understandable, teaches core understanding, builds confidence. Best video I've seen. Thanks!
Beautifully executed video. Step-by-step, easy to understand. Amazing demonstrations, e.g., fuel injectors pulsing in-time. Wow. Great job.
Very useful video, saved me hours of toil and frustration. Ratchet and wrenches is my new go-to channel for vehicle DYI videos.
very good presentation. another possibility, even more simple, is the fuel tank does not reverse vent due to a bad gas cap. so drawing fuel out of the tank (by simply driving awhile), builds up the vacuum.
Dangerous.
Oh, and i just started having this problem this winter.
Best regards,
Paul
absolutely epic video!!!!!! Blowing air into each segment and putting in your own check valve is phenomenal!!!!!!
This was very mind blowing! Simple easy and detailed information made this a very easy and effective learning experience 👍🏽
Can anybody help me to get a check valve
@@edwinmkuzo3819 do you mean finding it at parts store or on your vehicle?
Thank you.
Thats a great work around
Adding check valve
Never seen that before
Properly the best mechanical video I have ever seen. The quality of info was super.
Man I wish I had a friend like you that knows what he's talking about. Great video man!
Does The check valve also have a same affect on a diesel car
Outstandingly thorough, concise, and ingenuous; albeit unorthodoxed but effective (the check-valve hack). The world is a slightly better place because of this video. Thank you.
Thanks to you nice explanation even the beginner can flow your advice without difficulty 👍👍👍
Excellent video mine was one of the injectors you definitely saved me a lot of time thanks
👍
Thank you. This is valuable information for car owners who are typically fooled by mechanics in third world where trainings are rare.
Exceptional video, the systematic and clear nature of it is glorious.
Thank you
Wow, I'm impressed as hell with this guy's video. This dude is very helpful and explains very clearly
Superlative explanation and demonstration!!!👌🏽 Fantastic video skillz!👍🏽 What a great channel! Glad I found this!!!😁
My boyfriends friend did this with my Camaro and it worked yayyy got my baby back, and he reaped the rewards I gave him giggles!
OBD1…HELP!
Maybe your fuel pump control unit if you have one
@@UTP_ENT so i did end up bypassing the fuel pump ecu and now the car can stay running if i stay on the gas, no black smoke or richness, BUT now it can’t rev pass 1500rpm. I did change the TPS and heard sometimes it need calibration? But other videos i’ve watched they didn’t calibrate and it ran fine after changing. All my symptoms now are basically like a bad TPS. Can’t idle or rev up. But can run if I feather the gas.
I have that problem in my van in tomorrow morning I'll be doing all you show in this video. Thanks so much for this video
This is a VERY WELL DONE visual tutorial video on how to check for fuel pressure vacuum leaks in the fuel system. VERY HELPFUL! Thank You. 😊
Finally, a comprehensive test. Thanks a million!
2:17 The Fuel Pressure Regulator is NOT always located on the fuel rail. Vehicles vary on locations so keep that in mind.
some times the regulator is on the fuel pump inside the tank... Not sure how that works but I just felt with this on my 6.0 2006 GM
Do you know if this video works for direct injection? GDI
Fantastic video. Systematic, logical, clear, with an ingenious, dead simple fix to boot. Thank you.
Great idea really… I’d use the simple solution of jamming an old valve stem from my neighbor’s bike in a piece of fuel line a good rubbery glue might help too
It was so well explained that I immediately subscribed to your channel. Thank you!
Me too!
Me too
I just subscribed and im going to watch all your videos, I think this is the only video on UA-cam that i didn't get lost on and ended up just clicking off. This explains what is what and how it works, very good and helpful.
Good work thinking outside the box 📦
Keep it up Homie 😎
ok your video was by far thee best ones ive ever watched and ive watched a crap load....ive always considered myself very mechanically inclined man...not very strong when it comes to the classroom portion of anything... ive always been a hands on guy..sometimes im loking over smeones shoulder while asking questions and the rest of the time im winging it.....i consider myself a jack of all trades a master of none...in other words a DIYer....downside of doin the work myself puts me here reaching out for anyones help.... i have a 2006 kia sorento... intial problem was a no start.... so far ive done the following..... 1..changed fuel 2....cranksensor 3.....cranksensor 4....TBC sensor 5....IAC valve 6 coilpacks. 7.....mass airflow sensor 8....air filter.....because my ECM harness had a bad wire that seemed to have been coroaded i changed the harness clip and the ecm......STILL NOTHING..... today i double checked timing position....checked good....car used to start with MAF senor disconnected but died when put in gear....left it at mechanics for a week.... not only did they not fix ...cuoldnt even tell what was wrong.....my last ditch effort in reviving my car is tests u demonstrated on your video......i truly believe this a very simple fix......so simple ive got to be over looking it......PLEASE ANY FEED BACK IS APPRECIATED...not always online so please feel free to text or email me 4086259472...bantimothy426@gmail.com
Man, this was one of the clearest and most informative DIY videos I've ever seen! 👍👍👍
Absolutely genius person, what a clear explanation... i am having trouble with Nissan Qashqai ( diesel ), but same principles apply... Will check out tomorrow, and see what happens. Thank you very much !! My salute to you......
You, my friend, are one hell of a guy!! Keep up the great videos... I love that they you're so clear! :)
I have the same problem with my 88 gta 305. FINALY THE BEST HELP VIDEO! Tomorow i will be fixing my car. Warm Greetings from Poland. Big thx.
This is obe of the BEST VIDIOES ive seen on utube thank you so much very helpful
Thanks for the education. Very easy to understand! Its smart to go thru the system completely before flushing money on any parts! I appreciate your common sense and reality fix! Save your money!
ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT VIDEO! Best I have ever seen on this subject. Thank you!
thanks
Excellent instructional video Error Code Guy! You are truly a Master Mechanic. I wish I lived near your shop!
Bingo!!! I'll be damned. Your info is invaluable sir. You're saving lives, believe me. Saving lives, and quality of life. Thank you.
Agree 100%
So we’ll shot. Easy to understand the process and very inexpensive and very helpful methodology. I’m going to do this myself. Thanks
