I had an '05 Accord with a bad O2 sensor. I pulled it and suspended just the tip in gasoline over night. Screwed it back in and it was still going strong years later when I sold it.

Scotty, you are awesome! I have a check engine light recently came on. Car is running like always. Had it scanned and the read out was talking about bank one and bank two running too lean. Thanks to you, I know what banks are. I'm replacing fuel pump and filter. Car only has 135,000 miles on it. Don't know why fuel pump is going bad so soon after 22 years! Go figure!
Last unit i did O2 sensors on was a 96 'camry 2.2L- did the downstream O2 sensor with new converter..aww jeez..it took forever for the monitor to run & it didnt like the first sensor anymore- ended up doing front sensor & more monitor driving..then it was happy..good Toyota car that still passes emissions test( did a 100k complete service/inspection on it 3yrs ago)- yeah ...I really did go over everything-great little Japan unit.
The connectors on exhaust sensors are a pain to unlatch, as they use Class 4 150C capable plastics and seals. Over time the silicone seals can bond in place from the heat and the plastic stiffens. The best method is to push them in the mating direction first, press the latch hard, and then unmate.
On a 2006 Toyota Vitz with a 1KR-FE engine, I disconnected the post cat/ down stream O2 sensor wiring harness/ plug and no Check Engine Light (CEL) was visible on the cluster panel. I only remembered it was accidentally unplugged when driving a few KMs, the car gave a jerking Motion when picking up upon acceleration. So my presumption is that it doesn't always emit the CEL. Maybe just store the troubleshooting code until the O2 sensor issue is resolved. Cheers Scotty very informative vids

The NZ market cars had no cat and no oxygen sensor so the motor ran open loop. A couple of years later when unleaded fuel was introduced in NZ I got hold of a sensor and installed it. Those toyota v8s sound great. I'd just ditch the cat and disable the secondary o2 sensor through software. As long as all the ECU's readiness checks are completed and there are no codes it would still pass emissions (if it's just an OBDII check with no sniff test)
On a VW/Audi engine, the right side of the engine is bank 1. Cylinders are numbered front-to-back, passenger side first: 1-2-3, then 4-5-6, unlike American cars.
Your new sensor will come with a small package of "anti-seize" compound in the box. Apply a small amount to the threads and spread evenly. Put it on towards the end of the threads so that it will work its way up the threads as you spread and it screws into the bung. Yup, the hole the sensor goes in is called a bung hole, just like on a keg of beer or whiskey. Using this compound will keep the sensor from rusting (seizing) to the threads of the different metal. Do this same thing when you change spark plugs, it'll keep you from breaking plugs off in your heads. 😀

@fre d ik it annoys me to when people say it i meant is sarcasticaly
That whole part made my day. Omg ahahaha aahaha
I gave away my toyota soarer because of this. Transmission and engine was runing like a dream. Car was letting out black spotty smoke. No one really knew the problem . Some said it was the mass air flow sensor. Other said it was the map sensor. The prices they were giving me were like $700 _$900
I knew it couldn’t be that big of a problem, the SC430 is damn near indestructible.
I know right ,i have an 02 sc430 and never had a problem ,the only thing i replaced was the timing belt water pump and still runs better than most new cars
Mine too. Had to change the battery after not driving it a week or so. Got a battery maintainer for winter after that.
Thank you Scotty for this information. Keep up the good work.
The Toyota Avalon in Australia has 6 Oxygen Sensors should I change them all ?
Holy crap 6... damn my beema has 4 n i thought dat was alot
Good luck!
No es bruno...nope...thatz nukkin futz!
Hello scotty, i have a 2005 mercury grand marquis gs, i took it to autozone and the code they gave me was that the tps sensor meeds to be replaced. How do i know if its the tps and not the oxygen sensors?
Sometimes it amazes me to think how much money Scotty has saved over the years with his automechanic knowledge and skills. Maybe Scotty can do a video on how an average Joe with zero auto repairing skills, on a part time and leisure basis, can further their knowledge in this area?
Go to a wrecker with some tools and pull brakes apart etc, change pads,
@@BennyBestt Great idea. I wish someone told me that in High School. I could have saved hundreds of dollars over the past forty years. LOL
@@theodorevegh6030 you tube is so handy for learning how to do things. All the best
@@BennyBestt yes UA-cam it helps a lot with some good tools and dirty hands you save a bundle
Experience. That's the best teacher, practice practice practice. Even if you mess up, next time you will know how NOT to do something and go at it a different way. Also, you will never stop learning, Even old mechanics learn new tricks of the trade all the time.
Scotty your delivery and terminology is absolutely brilliant...you make me laugh as so much is the same in Belfast N.I
I wish to have met such an honest michanic like you but they are as rare as Hen's teeth...
Never stop ..
From the expat in PATTAYA THAILAND
After she left I feel like nothing will bring me the same joy, but I’m grateful that Scotty is here to teach me how to get my car to run better it brings me the same joy when I fix something on my car
I live in Mn. Tools you will also need is a map gas torch and probably a thread tapper to replace those.
the greatest auto mechanic teacher ever.
Those toyota v8s sound great. I'd just ditch the cat and disable the secondary o2 sensor through software. As long as all the ECU's readiness checks are completed and there are no codes it would still pass emissions (if it's just an OBDII check with no sniff test)
Your community is so lucky to have you Scotty.
On a VW/Audi engine, the right side of the engine is bank 1. Cylinders are numbered front-to-back, passenger side first: 1-2-3, then 4-5-6, unlike American cars.
4:05 "one hand job" What? No meme?
3:46
Did this on the Mazda, much more working room than the v8 on the Lexus. Got it from the top. Pre cat vent was twice as expensive than the post
Scotty gives me info I didn't even know I needed??? Thank you
Hands down the best mechanic for UA-cam advice on car repairs.
Yes, if only more people used antiseize grease when installing stuff like this it would make jobs easier for the next guy
Scott, I just LOVE watching you in your videos! AND you are a genius too.
Scotty, great job on your video's. just a thought, wouldn't it be awesome if car manufactures actually engineered in a way that made it enjoyable to repair things knowing that cars will break down.
Hey Scotty i have a 1999toyota Camry LE ,my O2 sensor went out as well, but it did make the car run worse, it made it run rich as I could smell gas,it was so easy to fix on that car , and the oil filter to is super easy ,you should do a video on that car ,parts are cheap as well,it's the best cheapest car I've ever owned
Keep it 'til the wheels fall off. Even Toyota doesn't make them like they used to.
@@EMichaelBall yup I deliver pizza in it , people ask me why don't you get a newer car, and I say why would I use a new car for delivery,if this one gets scratch I don't even care it's just a work car and parts on eBay are super cheap ,I have a lowered 350z 6speed manual for my pleasure driving, yes it's fun
Here in Canada I have no ever been able to remove a o2 sensors without having it glow red.
I have a 2007 Nissan Murano with 195,240 miles and got a check engine light for an oxygen sensor been driving with the light on for 1894 miles with it on
You can use a pick/hook tool to lift the clip on the plug and will slide straight out 👍
Dude I love your voice and videos. You made this fun and less stressful when I was looking up videos on how to change and oxygen sensor for my 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 L v6
Lexus IS amazing!
Toyota gets the credit. It's just a luxury Toyota.
Is a toyota engine that's why it run for so long
I was gonna say yeah toyota is amazing but thwy already beat me to it lol
Love how Scott builds Toyota up in one video and tears them down in onother.
Lol thats so true.
oh scotty you crack me up with your puns and jokes😂. You're a true legend ❤️👍
I know I love this guy
Lol love how clean thAt underneath is. Here in MI. That thing would be solid rust.
I love how it's never just "plastic," it's always "plastic crap!" 🤣

Scotty. I had simmilar problem, but rather DPF related. There is a pressure sensor right behind and after the DPF, which tends to fail about 150-200k km run. If it fails it makes car reduce power and it runs snail like. Me and my dad experienced that. Also VW/Audi with TDI engines will confirm.
Tow sentences I learned from you Scotty.
"Plastice crap"
"Endless money pits"
Love the show :)
Throw away cars. I'm going back to cars pre smog here in California, and cars that won't get thrown away. Got one more to get rid of.
Hey Scotty I've done the seafoam power steering trick work perfect got no more problems with it you could steer the car with one finger now before you couldn't even move it thanks a lot
seafoam tell me more
Thanks for using that safety jack stand. A true fundamental. The young Scottys need to form good habits. It also gives full confidence and a guy can relax while under a couple tons.
I just wanted to say thanks for making this video. It looks like it was a pain in the butt trying to lay under there do the job and film at the same time.
I literally had to change my bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 1 just last week and hardest part for me. Was just unplugging the darn thing
How do you know it has gone bad please?
Just changed all mine .its a pain but it does make tjat engine run proper
You can "BANK" on my 94 Toyota Celica not having a bunch of check engine lights on the dash and you can take that to the "BANK".
Can’t see the check engine light if you open the dash and take the bulb out
This was one of Scotty’s most informative videos
Hey scotty I have changed 2 o2 sensor and 2 catalytic converters and I still have a check ingine lite
Did u change map sensor as well
That’s awesome Scotty thanks for “Letting Me Know!).
As you know, several thinks can cause the O2 to read out of limits, ex exhaust leak, stuck injector etc etc. not always the O2 at fault
New subscriber: “Hey Scotty, I got this Chrysler...”
Scotty interrupts: “Let me stop you right there”
It's a Chrysler,,that's your first major problem.
great video , keep up the good work . i learned something new today . Thank you
"Plastic crap" - Scotty 2019
Lmao
Thanks Scotty! Your videos are awesome.
Alternate Universe Scotty:
“And since this is Mechanic Monday, I’m giving away some plastic crap!”
Scotty, SC430 is an amazing car and and am very surprise you didn't talk about it much or show the car and tell everyone what an amazing, luxury and convertible car SC430 still is and how it was built well. You show other crappy cars that are worth nothing and good for junkyard. This is one of the most finest cars Lexus every build back in 2002-2010
Scotty! Hi! You're amazing. Have a great day 😊
hello thanks you too!
Dennis Hopper of the mechanic's! Very well explained video Thank You!!
