Im a 70 year old Irish lady, can never stop living listening to this fabulous song, since i heard it on the old wireless when i came home from school, im an old lady now, but it never left me, thanks, poor Tom, and Laura, rip.
I am 71, when this record came out it must have been in the late 50s, my sister and I had been exposed to polio, we were at a Christmas party with my cousin who was diagnosed with polio, on St Stephen's day. At that time the only precaution was ro stay in bed with curtains pulled, very difficult for 6 year old. We had the wireless moved to our bed room, this was played 5 or 6 times a day. Very different Ireland.
Especially if your music teacher has you learn to play it on the guitar as part of your learning curriculum 😂😂😂 I’m 60! And I have been singing the same song since I was 8 years old
I, too, remember my father, God rest his soul, singing this song. He was born in Korea in 1935, lost both parents during Korean War, and was sent to a foster family in San Jose, CA where he went to highschool and college. He came back to Korea after he graduated, but I guess he was more or less Americanized, a little different from other Koreans of his time as a result. For example he never watched Koren TV for the rest of his life, he only watched AFKN(American Forces Korea Network, a broadcasting service for American soldiers stationed in Korea ). He wasn't into rock and roll (because he was in the States before r&r), but he liked country songs like "Take me home, country road", "The City of New Orleans" or "Rhinestone Cowboy". I was thinking about him today, and I remembered this song, and it led me here.
I'm from Chennai, India, and I remember my late father (1942 - 2015) singing this! My dad was a huge cowboy and injun movie fan and a great music afficionado.
My father was born in 1921 I was born in 1971 Growing up I remember sometimes my Dad would be singing the words to this song Today I was on UA-cam 3 / 16 / 19 I finally looked up the song and found this video It brought a tear to my eye I guess I just miss my father 😔

Very well done. In the mid-60s my brothers and I would harmonize this ballad in the back of the Buick riding with my father going from south Atlanta to visit his family in Indiana. I was maybe 12-13; my brothers younger. We had no idea what it was we were singing about but we sure did enjoy singing it over & over.
