I remember this song from the spring of 1970 [No 1 for 3 weeks BBC Charts], although I was just 11 at the time. Along with Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge over Troubled Water it kept the Beatles last single - Let it Be - off the No 1 slot. This was Lee's only record, but he was not really a singer, he was a Western actor, but this song is from his musical western Paint Your Wagon. I seem to remember that the B side was by another normally non-singing Western actor Clint Eastwood from the same film. Perhaps this single was released prior to the release of the full soundtrack album of the film. I did not get to see Paint your Wagon for nearly another decade, when I, by then a young adult, visited relatives in London on New Year's Day 1980 and it was shown on TV that afternoon.
I sang this to my brother as he was passing away he loved this song and I had it played at his funeral and I weep for him : God bless you Lee for this song 🌟

I am 82 in a month. This song still sits with me as I traveled most of my life esp. going where I had never been on purpose. Never had a sleeping place, a job , friends or family and sometimes not enough money to get me further down the road. I mostly did this while dragging a wife and kids with me. I am still a house painter and drywall man after 54 years but settled down these last 5 years. What a voyage..
Even though Lee Marvin was not a natural singer, he sang this song with a world weariness and sadness that few could capture, and that Ben Rumson knew only all too well.
Jeremiah 17:5 New Living Translation 5 This is what the Lord says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord.
What an amazing man. Served as a marine in the Pacific in WW2, he personally participated in 21 offensive beach landings. He is rightly buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington.
My Grandfather passed away last week and I found out this is going to be the walking out song at his funeral in April. Decided to listen to it on my break in work and now I’m crying. Bad move. RIP Grandad. I love you 🖤
I have played and loved this gem since 1969. In the 80s, when our kids were small,. they used to tease me sarcastically by imitating Lee's gravely voice when I played it. No more! They love it now! The movie was great, too. The legendary Clint Eastwood didn't hurt, either! It was also played at the funeral of a friend of mine who also used to work in the music business. It seems he had chosen this classic ahead of time.
Jeremiah 17:5 New Living Translation 5 This is what the Lord says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord.
I have loved this song all my life. Love Lee Marvin too. An unaffected down to earth real man and a decorated veteran. I guess this is my themevsong too, I am a veteran, 69 this year and been to more countries than my age. I still wake up every day with the travel lust, i ride motorcycles every week ( I keep two). The wind in my face and the sound of the road and the straight through exhausts calms me. Stay safe all you fellow wanderers.
Looks like this is a song from a strong generation of caring people. I have come to listen to this as it is my dad's choice for his funeral and he sadly passed away yesterday. He always used to sing this song and would watch all the old war and cowboy films when I was younger. Read some of these comments brings me a sense of warmth and comfort to know others loved this like he did. Rest in peace dad xxx
Condolences to you. Your Father came from a generation of Americanism. My Father thank God is still alive and he too loves and watches all the old Westerns. War movies? Not so much. He is a Army Officer.
This song with Lee Marvin was played at my fathers funeral Dec 23 2021. I was born under a wandering star, his wishes, loved him so much Ern.Hodson Miss you every day.
Lee Marvin wasn't known for singing but still he made this song sound so beautiful. One of my late fathers favourite song but when my father use to play this song I used to tell him, why do you keep playing this crap song over and over again and he said to me, son one day you'll learn to appreciate this song. Dad was right once again.
For a man who was not by any measure a singer, did a finer than fine job of it- he even got a hit single out of it! I met him once back in 1976 out in Montauk, NY, I was suck do to fog- working on my Commercial Pilot Certificate and he was there for Blue Fin Tuna! Thought it was interesting that I would be bunking out in the airplane!
I believe Lee Marvin couldn't sing, so each word was literally was recorded individually. Whatever still a classic. Could be my theme song; left home at 16, lived in the UK, Germany, US......
This used to be one of my grandpa’s favorite songs. When I listen to it it reminds me of him and then I know he’s still with me. It’s been a year since he passed away, I still miss him so much
Guess I'm dead then, I couldn't feel it. Being a wondering star was one thing as a teen, now being a star for Christ with a home in heaven and a constant friend at my side is much, much better. Hell is a real place, but those who go, choose to.
The music to Paint Your Wagon (play) has a special significance to me. The movie version with Eastwood, Marvin and Seeberg was great! You have to be mentally dead to not like it or enjoy it.

This has to be the best example of a movie musical full of unlikely singers . I mean who'd think of Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood as musical stars! Brilliant brilliant job.
Funny story.. My grandpa loved lee Marvin (particularly this movie too) and all the classics like gene autry, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, etc. my grandpa passed away some time ago and I have named my son after him; his name is Gene. Ironically, this is actually the ONLY song that will calm him down and put him to sleep. I know my grandpa is looking over him somewhere from up there.
My father is still alive and too it's a fan of these actors and they movies. I particulary like so much John Wayne and Lee Marvin, or Clint Eastwood. And i liked her so much too-Jean Seberg-for this movie. Such a good notice that you like too these kind of movies. psd: I'm Spanish, i'll hope that this no not note a very, hahaha.
Yes. Like Jimmie Stewart for one. He didn't hide in the USO "entertaining troops". He risked his life many, many times flying B-24 bombers over occupied Europe. He was a REAL hero.
Henry Horner well Jimmy Stewart bombed civilians so he should have been stopped in my opinion, WW2 was a horrific war and noone should take pride in it.

The common criticism is that Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood couldn't sing. In the traditional sense they couldn't but for this movie and the songs they sang they were perfect. Too bad so many didn't get it.

I'm 78 have always loved this song. Getting ready to make a move again. Hopefully my last. Moved more times in my life then I had ever imagined. Lee Marvin was a great actor. While I liked this movie, my favorite Lee Marvin movie was Cat Ballou
Mr. Marvin always said he was more proud of this Gold Record than his Oscar. I can't agree more. Cat Ballou is an entertaining film, but this song is haunting and clings to all who hear it.

Never had a sleeping place, a job , friends or family and sometimes not enough money to get me further down the road. I mostly did this while dragging a wife and kids with me. I am still a house painter and drywall man after 54 years but settled down these last 5 years. What a voyage..
Good on you, respect, made me smile, lots of love yo you and the family
Bless you and your family, John Gould, and Happy 82nd Birthday! Jo in UK
Good for you Johnno! Takes a lot of balls to do what you've done - Happy Birthday in 3 weeks and God Bless you mate
Happy Birthday from Germany! Man, you got guts !
Happy Birthday John 🎁🎈🎂 May your remaining years be filled with just as much love and mystery.
More than 50 years later, corporate America recognizes Lee Marvin.
Semper Fidelis, Lee.

Even though Lee Marvin was not a natural singer, he sang this song with a world weariness and sadness that few could capture, and that Ben Rumson knew only all too well.
So glad you understand this song and Lee's singing it!! Most don't.
Loved the song and the movie. He was a great actor - comedy, western, bad guy, good guy, tough guy.
Jeremiah 17:5 New Living Translation
5 This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans,
who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord.
This is my son a boy who has been looking for something I cant give him
It is better to hit the right emotions than the right notes.
Wow! In 1969 I was nineteen years old. Now I sit here listening to Lee Marvin, and when I get up and look in the mirror I look like him.
My hubby passed from cancer last July. He loved this song .he was only 62 ❤
Bless your husband.
Thank u 💓
❤❤
A beautiful timeless song and he's out there floating on that wandering star 💖
65 years ago as a young kid, I fell in love with this song and still am...
@Mark Honest WHO are you
@Mark Honest Mark HONEST is not HONEST...
What an amazing man. Served as a marine in the Pacific in WW2, he personally participated in 21 offensive beach landings. He is rightly buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington.
Too bad his "Palimony girlfriend" cleaned him out.
He sang this on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Thankyou for the information on Lee I had no idea...!!
Bernard Laufenberg Go Royal , Tremendous effort on the vocals ! Complete legend 👍🏻🤟🏻
WRONG!! He is Alive and will live forever in our memories.
And he said the scariest Marine NCO he ever met, went on to be Captain Kangaroo [Bob Keshian (sp) ]
My Grandfather passed away last week and I found out this is going to be the walking out song at his funeral in April. Decided to listen to it on my break in work and now I’m crying. Bad move. RIP Grandad. I love you 🖤
My condolences 🌹❤️
Suck it up.
Your Grandfather --had a good idea ..thx --you did the job--Ich bin DEUTSCHER --let HIM find his peace--AND YOU ARE TTTOOO--tue rollf
I’m very sorry for your loss. Remember the good times and he will be around you.
So do my kids Harry sir!
die sind aber
.
Your kids have great taste, Steven! Bravo!
Loved the movie as well - and Harve Presnell.....his singing of "Mariah" stole the movie! Great story, great characters.
This is such a simple song, but yet it is so powerful. I love it.
I’d pay good money to have a voice like that.
Love it to
Try... "amazing Grace." it is the best in all the world for eternity.
@@iancurtiswishlist4996 Whatever that means. Better google the lyrics to amazing grace. It's meant for eternity.

This movie was a favorite for mom and I. When she passed away, I went to UA-cam to watch it in her memory. We loved all the songs in it.
It was a fave for my nan... I'm 55 and I still Love and Adore this even if for the memories XX

My dad played this to us siblings in the back of a Datsun truck in 1976 in the Wild Coast, South Africa. A faint and yet pleasant memory.
Hey how are you doing…?
One of the most underrated actors of all time. A TRUE LEGEND
Jeremiah 17:5 New Living Translation
5 This is what the Lord says:
“Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans,

True legend, underrated, only by fools.
Greets from Croatia!
My dad sang this he pass 3 days ago nice to hear it again rip dad ❤
Unfortunately, I know this pain too!
Say what you will. The film with Marvin, Eastwood and Seeberg truly was a great film!
A great song even if he could not sing. He had the right voice for this beautiful song.
Respect to ya mate.!
You too brother.

Hey how are you doing..?
This is my whish from my last days
Met him in the 60s, Cat B was premier...in Denver..........met him in thebar, Brown Palace Hotel, Ship's Tavern, he was quite gracious.
I thought he had an awful voice..
I think you have an awful voice.
+mary rawson ...... that is the beauty of it
oh what a lie!
Such a relaxing song. Love when he says, "I've never seen a sight that didn't look better looking back."
Over 100 times I have felt the same way. What a great line.
"..but only people make you cry.." So so true.
@Mark honest Hello. Very well thank you. And you?
That’s so true Isabella ❤
Lee and Clint two of the best genuine people and actors
I love that people are still watching this, reminds me of childhood
to be at my funeral
I'm too young to have childhood memories about it but I still love it
I ready made a play list called my funeral with songs and movie clips I want the playlist to be played when I die
@@edwardnigma2638 good idea EDWARD NIGMA - i think ill do that with my wet fish van (i sell wet fish from a van) great thinking 👍
absolutely !
Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin in a MUSICAL! Can life get any better? Thanks for the music.
Deliveranca
cant get better then them
i think this was the only time Clint Eastward sang in a musical
the best of the best
I believe Lee Marvin couldn't sing, so each word was literally was recorded individually. Whatever still a classic.
Could be my theme song; left home at 16, lived in the UK, Germany, US......
Das ist die schönste Filmmusik die ich kenne.Einfach so schön ,könnte ich mir immer wieder anhören.😃😐☺️😉😆
I grew up in the sixties a big fan of Lee Marvin's roles. I always knew he was a long-haired hippy deep within, this video proves it.
2024. My favorite song makes its way back on my screen. Thank you my old friend.
Lee marvin was another great actor from USA. RIP and thank you for all the great movies Lee.
My father loved Paint your Wagon. I play this every now and then, just in case he's listening. Just for you dad. xx
Omg..finally I found a song that my dad used to hum every day ❤🎶 Now I am in love with this song too 🥰

This used to be one of my grandpa’s favorite songs. When I listen to it it reminds me of him and then I know he’s still with me. It’s been a year since he passed away, I still miss him so much
If this doesn't stir up emotions in you, then you're already dead.
Guess I'm dead then, I couldn't feel it. Being a wondering star was one thing as a teen, now being a star for Christ with a home in heaven and a constant friend at my side is much, much better. Hell is a real place, but those who go, choose to.
@@eaglegoldengate4184 well...your fun
The music to Paint Your Wagon (play) has a special significance to me. The movie version with Eastwood, Marvin and Seeberg was great! You have to be mentally dead to not like it or enjoy it.
@@eaglegoldengate4184 God bless you.🙏🏼 i couldn't agree more, exept that one with friends. I lost all of the friends that was keeping me away from God. But what do you think about this song?

I was a 9 year old kid watching this film ! as soon as Lee started singing i joined in and then all around me in the cinema everyone joined in - what a memory I'm 53 now !!! Great song and still is now!!
You, or the kid you were, get two enthusiastic thumbs up for that! I pulled a similar stunt when I was a little kid, and my mother never stopped telling that story and how embarrassed she was.
steve Brok. I did the same thing to.
steve Brok what a wonderful memory

steve Brok Man! I'm picturing it and I've spilled my popcorn. Sounds CLASS.
I feel this song in my bones. I feel like it is me, but really I'm happy sitting at home with my pets. I'll never forget going to watch it in the theater.
Yes this song my dad requested this for his funeral back in April 2017.. he passed day after my birthday r.i.p.my lovely dad and a very nice song in deed very spiritual .
He hears you.
Two thumbs up for Lee Marvin and this song, that's real talent..........
Love this movie.
No matter who, where or when....this is a song for everybody.
I think there's a lot of us that have this is our theme song. It's one of the greatest songs of all times. Thank you Mr. Marvin.
That would be... "amazing Grace" as the greatest song for all eternity.

One of the best movie songs I have ever heard - with the marvellous bass-voice of LEE MARVIN, a hard-boiled warhorse in many films. (5/29-2020)
👍👍
Koliko puta se "ulovim" kako pjevušim ovu pjesmu! Obožavao sam Lee Marvina. R.I.P. 😢
This has to be the best example of a movie musical full of unlikely singers . I mean who'd think of Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood as musical stars! Brilliant brilliant job.
Lee Marvin, a great talent that will be sadly missed.
+Edward Pennacchini Lee was no singer, but he sure nailed this one, from a movie that didn't make a dime...................
+Edward Pennacchini will be missed? he died in 1987 for fuck sakes. do you miss dinosaurs too?

Ahhh, the truth comes out!
+Dave Ross You left off head, Dave
Thanks for the kind words of my family member. I’m damn proud to be one of lees descendants ❤
That is lovely :).
that's so sweet. it's my go to song for me too
why 22?
My father is still alive and too it's a fan of these actors and they movies. I particulary like so much John Wayne and Lee Marvin, or Clint Eastwood. And i liked her so much too-Jean Seberg-for this movie. Such a good notice that you like too these kind of movies.

I was four when this came out, my late Mum said I loved it every time I heard it on the radio. It went to no.1 in the UK.
'Snow can burn your eyes but only people make you cry'
A great lyrics
So true
Truer words never spoken !
I wonder how many times they had to run this through the DAW vocoder before Marvin sounded passably listenable.
Think you'll find it's smoke not snow.
Look how many great actors of his era served this country during war. Hero all of them.!!!
Sure wouldn't happen in today's world! That was a time when men really were MEN!
Yes. Like Jimmie Stewart for one. He didn't hide in the USO "entertaining troops". He risked his life many, many times flying B-24 bombers over occupied Europe. He was a REAL hero.
Bet he stands for national anthem
Yeah well them and quite a few others .. it was a stupid war like all wars .. if we stopped romancing them maybe they would stop....
Henry Horner well Jimmy Stewart bombed civilians so he should have been stopped in my opinion, WW2 was a horrific war and noone should take pride in it.
Sitting here at 10 o’clock , December 2020 we are just going into Christmas it’s the 22 nd and going through all great songs , Please whoever you are ,thinking of you, even if don’t know where you living. was a just a kid, but my dad was a bit of a race/rally driver. We were in the pit..so was Lee Marvin...all we wanted was orange pop. I am 63 now and I still think he is a manly man.
Hello how are you doing?
The common criticism is that Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood couldn't sing. In the traditional sense they couldn't but for this movie and the songs they sang they were perfect. Too bad so many didn't get it.
Everybody can sing this way. Eastwood and Marvin were great singers, just not Kelis.
I had this on a single record love the song
Clint was a good singer, Lee was not BUT for this song Lee was perfect.
His rusty voice suited the song considering the era the movie was set in.
John Wayne also!
Rip and blessed to all xxx
I was born on Easter Sunday 29th March 1970 and this song was number 1 in the charts.
Feeling blessed x
@Mark Honest I'm great thank you

If the mule kicked him he wouldn't kicked him right back
Lee and his crystal clear voice...amazing
I'm 78 have always loved this song. Getting ready to make a move again. Hopefully my last. Moved more times in my life then I had ever imagined. Lee Marvin was a great actor. While I liked this movie, my favorite Lee Marvin movie was Cat Ballou
Love this old movie,Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood.Great acting and singing.Marvin amazing comedy actor❤
It became a world hit wonder classic without fail or doubt guaranteed.
That goes to those many who thought Le Marvin couldn't sing.
Mr. Marvin always said he was more proud of this Gold Record than his Oscar. I can't agree more. Cat Ballou is an entertaining film, but this song is haunting and clings to all who hear it.
You bet!!
The songs, "I talk to the Trees", and that superlative "They Call the Wind Mariah" also came from the Broadway play, PAINT YOUR WAGON.
Try.. "amazing Grace" that will grab and shock you. "
