- ABOUT THE SONG WALTZING MATILDA:
Can life and love be forever? I believe with all my heart that they can... and do.
People who know me and my parents are sometimes surprised when I tell them that my mom and dad met at Arthur Murray’s Dance Studio in Peoria Illinois after World War II. It’s surprising even to me because I had only see them dance once and that was when I and my wife were married.
My dad was actually very shy and I’m surprised he was even able to work up the courage to ask my mother to dance, and my mother being a bit older by several years, was often passed over when people went to the dance floor. The song Waltzing Matilda (by BanjoPatterson) came into this love story because it was my mother’s favorite song; and whenever I hear it, even today, I think of her. So it’s not surprising that the two stories would find their way into this song. One thing that was true, from the day they met until the very end, they were undyingly devoted to each other.
Thinking about the first day when they met at the dance studio I could just imagine my dad, shy and searching for something cleaver to say, and only coming up with, “Will you come waltzing with me?” As he reached out to take her hand.
My dad passed away quietly one Palm Sunday almost forty years ago, during The Wheel of Fortune, with both me and my mom by his side. My mother moved to Tennessee several years later and eventually had a stroke paralyzing the left side of her body, forcing us to move her into a nursing home.
The day that my mother passed, the nursing home called me at work telling me to come quick, but an accident on the interstate kept me from getting to her on time. The nurse met me at the door with a sad look on her face, “She couldn’t wait…”
I asked if I could spend a minute alone with my mom. The nurse smiled, “certainly… take as much time as you want.” When I saw her for the last time it was as if she was sleeping, the pain and dementia were gone… and then I noticed a slight smile on her face. I believe in those last few moments, as her life slipped away, my dad was there, reaching out to take her hand once more…asking her to dance… the way he did when they first met.
That is how the song Waltzing Matilda came about. I wanted it to be a “special” memorial for them, my mom and dad, and the love they shared.
I hope you enjoy it.

I’m a 75 year-old man, typing this with tears in my eyes.
I was sobbing .
Bless you who ever you are as. My dad was exceptional . I saw him cry when his mum died
He put on a tough front but he loved his girls and my beautiful mother who he met at a dance .
I'm whipping tears from my eyes reading your response. This was and is a very special song.
Today, as a man of the same years, I said goodbye to a beautiful friend who lost the love of her life long ago. She was the most beautiful of humans, gracious, decent and forgiving, yet i could tell her loss continued to hurt her, a pain no one could relieve or assuage. We let her go upon the waters of the Coral Sea, and maybe at last she dances with her beau forever. Until it is revealed to me I bear her and her life in my heart. Perhaps in some distant time I will dance with my own beloved in a grand company of others.
@@davidarchibald50 You have the heart of a poet! Life does not begin at life's door step, nor does it end when that door finally closes. I firmly believe that we go on. Love goes on. Perhaps that thought is the real inspiration of Waltzing Matilda.
Me too . .
😢omg, tearing up.What a beautiful love story.❤Peace, love and healing to all
Thank you Kim.
Iam 72 years and it's been 50 years but this song fills my eyes wiith tears with memories and the love I have for her.
Thank you Donald. I usually don't respond to comments only because there are so many, but your comment touched me. Many times people (and especially women) think that men aren't sensitive and often it is a misconception. We feel deeply. We love deeply, And my song was about just such a love. Love is universal. Our need for one another is universal. Thank you for "being" what this song is about you. Bless you my friend. km
I have never heard it sung like this before, I love it.
🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤💐💐💐💐
Thanks Paul. I received a lot of responses reminding me that it had its origins in Australia. Also some said it was about hobos. Fact is, it's about my parents who are both deceased now almost 2 decades. I wrote it sometime ago and still cannot perform it is public because it means so much. Thanks for responding.
My God, That is such a beautiful song. It made me cry;
I mentioned to someone else- I still cannot perform it in public. I think I attempted to record it almost 40 times. Some songs steal your heart and writing this one did for me. I do have some really great songs on my UA-cam Channel as well- they are all free and if you hit the SUBSCRIBE button- when I add something new they will notify you. Hope to hear form you int he future. K

Thank you Robert. I noticed your last name is Burns. Years ago I worked in Hollywood on the old Tonight Show and George Burns was a personal friend. Are you related?

Immediate relation but maybe way back in days of yore
a great tribute...and clever use of the Australian song name....totally different...BUT tuneful and emotional....thanks for posting this
Thank you William. A special song for me. Some songs just come from no where. This one did. I do have some other really good songs on my channel as well.
@@kimmichael1480this is beautiful. I have found that love is painfully beautiful. This brings those kind of tears to my eyes
This is so beautiful. Like others here it bought tears to my eyes.
I think it took over 40 takes to record this. Probably one of the most emotional songs I have ever tried to record, and I still cannot perform it in public. At least I can share it with folks on UA-cam.
Love your song and the lyrics Kim. Would you help a Yank in the USA who grew up with the 1959 movie, "On the Beach" version of the song with different lyrics? Your story touched my heart and soul. My WWII Dad passed last year at age 97. Your have created a soundtrack for everyone to make the transition from our physical lives to our spiritual ones. May God bless you, and all of us with Eternal Life, Love and Light.
Sorry, a typo
"Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong "
❤we will all be reunited with our loved ones in heaven.God bless you
I firmly believe that. Years ago some close friends had a baby die of SIDS. One of the safest days I can recall. At the funeral the minister said something that has stayed with me all these years. He said nothing is ever lost in the plan for heaven and earth. He told the grieving parents one day they would hold their baby again and love him. And everything that was lost will be restored. Even now that thought brings teas to my eyes- so your comment is touching my heart as well. Thank you.
Absolutely Beautiful. 🥰
Thank you Phil.
Forevermore
Thank you Donald.
So besutiful❤
Thank you. I wish my parents had lived long enough to see it.
I REMEMBER THIS MUSICAL IN THE MOVIE 'ON THE BEACH' BASED ON THE NOVEL BY NEVIL SCHUTE. I REMEMBER THIS AND 'A TWN CALLED ALICE'
Thanks Jack--. probably not the actual Waltzing Matilda part of the song. It's not really about Waltzing, Matilda or really On he Beach though I've not actually seen it. this is a memorial to my Mom and Dad.
What was sung in On the Beach was the actual folk song Waltzing Matilda.
Wow!
Thank you Diane. You may be interested in looking at another video I have on my Yourtube channel "Pretty Lady". It is "different". Not at all what you would expect. if you like --Please subscribe. Cost nothing and means everything to me. Thanks.
So beautiful and sad💕
It is, but in a way it is a celebration of love and life. That is what I had in mind when I wrote it.
Beautiful
Thank you.
Can't get over not listening to this song...war is sad, bad, and a bad luck upon nations who don't support LOVE and UNITY but blood and killings.
Everyone hears something different in this song. Some of the responses are heart rending, and some are affirmations of life and love and even hope. I hope that at some point you will hear the hope.
when I need ourage I always sing this
😂beautiful 😮
Thank you Maureen.
BY THE WAY...The couple that appear at the end of the video...are my parents!!
That is something else.
Hopefully that means you liked it. For me it was and is a very special song.
Que versión mas bonita quien la canta
I wrote and sang it. I don't do it in public. It is too emotional for me. If you read the story in the description below or saw it on Facebook you probably know why. Thank you Victor.
Some of us will never know true lov e.
Nice
Do you know how similar our stories of two parents do in love but where did they meet ?
Well my dad was self taught everything , Fox Troy , waltz , my mother was breathtakingly beautiful , from family of 10 boys , 4 girls the boys teased her . Filmy ( she looked like a movie star )
Anyway he my dad had his airforce uniform on , and a quirky , cheeky red head , quiet short but mum told me 'oh andMerrilyn , it was the uniform that won me over '
I love men , I love men in suits ...
They called dad ,Bluey , bright red hair ...... well they were so opposite but so beautifully right and because of dad's gift to whiz women around dance floor , mum told me she got jealous . I said
Mum , but think about it , who gets to go home with Bluey ' she giggled and she and I would sing
Tennessee waltz , I was dancing with my darling .., to the .. waltz , when an old friend I introduced her to my loved one ..... that old friend steals his heart ..... you would know it .....
They died 14 , 12 years ago
Only after they go do you really reflect and conclude so much about their amazing qualities ... see their relationship ... mum held our family together , firm but dad the life of the party . Another song
'Can I have this dance for the rest of My Life '
That is beautiful and she loved that
I played 'dance with my father again ' Luther Vand Ross at dad's funeral
It was perfect
I miss them so much as life has bern hard and my sister and I not close .... divorced .... however. Reading your story ? I started sobbing as one night playing Tennessee Waltz , I looked at their photos
I grabbed paper'
Mum . There was never a chance that Bluwy would be lost to an old friend as it was you in his heart for always and I say that mum with certainty . I love writing so oergaks a short story like yours would be honouring their first meeting
At a small country town hall 'dance '
Thank you
You remind me of me and I love waltzing Mathilda hrs my country but it's catchy and I send love to you . Any family and know that I really read every single word and can feel your parents presence right now .

The sentimental one

Daisy a Day.
Is the American coppyrighted versoon
Actually the original Waltzing Matilda is in the public domain. I own the copyright on this song since 2018.
So australian hobo quoted this song while stealing the sheep?😮
Think you kind of missed the point of this song. Doesn't matter. Everyone sees something different. Hears something different. K
🥵
I noticed the "Sad" emoji. In a way, this really isn't a sad song. Maybe a reminder that the "end" is not really the end. Peace and love. K
