I love the way Mike and Jordan constantly look eachother in the eyes, keeping contact and communicating on a level only real musicians do. They are having so mutch fun performing again, its great!
I'll never forget what jp said about mike mangini in "the spirit carries on" documentary..he said" he can do things with one limb that people cant do with two"..take that from someone who has been(half his life) with the man who is considered as one of the great drummers of all time..
This means so much to me. This song has totally opened my eyes and is easily my favorite song by them. There is almost nothing compared to it to me. Almost perfect song.
I loved this concert so much! Was crammed near the front somewhere desperately trying to film some of the song but my arms got real achy (: I'm so glad you got this- it's one of my fave songs. Best concert ever.
@blindwombat Petrucci wrote all of the Drum parts. Mangini had no part in writing them but he did add little sauce in some songs. like 32th ride bell notes
Nice to see this back on the set list and Mangini seems to fit in well. I was worried because the album seemed like the music was written and he drummed underneath which was the reality. Didn't feel like the songs were written with him :/
There are parts in every song off the new album that are technical. Far more technical than what you can create with a drum machine. Lost not forgotten, outcry, Bridges in the Sky, Breeaking all illusions, even on the backs of angels all have really technical moments. I know, Petrucci's a genius but he's not a drummer. Oh, and "Where did I hear this?" in every subsequent interview i've seen Mangini and Petrucci give since the album came out. Video and in writing.
@reav3rtm honestly... i still do... i miss him mike mangini has been fantastic in his own right and i still embrace what he is bringing to dream theater... but there was something that i loved about MP... and nobody but mr. Portnoy himself can bring that back...
Those who say they won't buy another DT album without Portnoy; you're cutting off your nose to spite your face. A Dramatic Turn of Events was their best album in years. You're gonna miss out on some brilliant music.
@allanjenny Holy shit, are they no longer just dummy amps? It looks like he's actually plugged in to them!! I know that when I saw DT they were promoting BC&SL, and he would stand in front of dummy amps and just have one cab back stage that went into the mix...That way you would hear everybody the same volume no matter where you were in the audience.
@MrRafataff I think that petrucci could have written the drums. I'm a drummer and i heard really good stuff about drum writing from guitarrists. I also write the other instruments for my band. No one is limited for an instrument, or genre, music is only one
@MrRafataff Can you tell me where you heard this? Was it a video interview or did you read it somewhere? Also which parts are ""ridiculously technical" on the new CD? Cheers
@MrRafataff "Far more technical than what you can create with a drum machine" Now you're just being silly! I've had a drum machine since 1994 and you can create far more technical patterns than with a normal drum kit player. "in every subsequent interview i've seen Mangini and Petrucci give since the album came out. Video and in writing." I'm not being funny, but can you send some links. Cheers.
No he didn't, mate. He made primitive outlines to go with the songs and then gave Mangini creative control of his parts. You seriously think JP could have written some of the drum parts from the new album? They're ridiculously technical
Lucas Chacon also in the soft part before the solo ok constant motion. He doesn’t do ride hat patterns like that even though he can. I have no idea why he does this
@ironrushscorp i agree there not the same band. Portnoy was much more tight and was the life of that band. after stuff like budokan im really depressed at the choice of drummer. ill never buy anouther D.T, album because Mike was why I liked them to begin with.
It's true, you can create inhumanely fast tempo drum patterns using drum machines or even programs. I prefer real drum skills over a drum machine any day, but still, a real drum player can't out do the speed and technicality of work built on a program or drum machine.
Don't make idiotic assumptions. The reason I say that is because you are obviously very biased. If someone made you listen to an unknown song with portnoy on drums, and they told you it was mangini, you would make the claim that the drumming isn't very good.
"Don't make idiotic assumptions." And then your comment is 100% idiotic assumptions. You are not talking to a beginner here, friend.Im so sorry i can notice the difference between portnoy and mangini and you can't.
YET AGAIN! You completely misunderstand what I say! I'm done, this is just getting ridiculous because you are basically arguing against an imaginary third person.
indirect insult?Buddy, if mangini himself was readind this he would not feel insulted.There are 76378638 better drummers then protnoy when we are talking about technique.But not a single one of them is capable of replacing portnoy, because portnoy is very unique.This argument is stupid, i will never convince you because you ara just not capable of hearing the differences between the two musicians
I rather see spitshields AGAIN on JP´s rigg than see Mangini on drums....And why does his drumset look like crap? Must be the ugliest drumset I´ve seen...LOL
Mangini slayed that show. Probably the most entertaining drummer I've ever seen.
My god, the harmony on "knows I'm holding back" is absolutely divine.
Mike's kit sounds fantastic in this clip, as does his playing. Great song too and the first time I've heard a live version of it.
What a great sound Mangini has!
I love the way Mike and Jordan constantly look eachother in the eyes, keeping contact and communicating on a level only real musicians do. They are having so mutch fun performing again, its great!

I was there...down below somewhere, nice to see a great video from the balcony.
After listening to the new record i am totally blown away - they choose the right man behind the kit !
I was there!!! :D Whole concert blew me away!!! First ever DT concert...I wouldn't say no to go again!
I loved this concert so much! Was crammed near the front somewhere desperately trying to film some of the song but my arms got real achy (:
I'm so glad you got this- it's one of my fave songs.
Best concert ever.
I love how Dream Theater uses Moog equipment, especially because Moog is in Asheville, NC my home town!
Mangini Excelente Performance! So accurate, just great
good video quality! I feel like I'm watching the "Chaos in Motion" DVD :P
Petrucci makes tuning your guitar sound epic. I hope they're still doing this setlist when I see them, it fucking kicks ass!
THEY'RE COMING TO RIVERSIDE, CA I AM SOOOO EXCITED!!!!! OMFG I seriously Hope they play this song!!!!!!!!!
With or without Portnoy Dream Theater is always be Dream Theater... they will continue to rock the world..
i keep happening to stumble across vids of the gig i went to last year. lol
oh my god what a great song
@MrRafataff yes, he did! he said in an interview that he made the drums part electronicly and the he gave it to mangini so he could learn it..
@blindwombat Petrucci wrote all of the Drum parts. Mangini had no part in writing them but he did add little sauce in some songs. like 32th ride bell notes

is very good from bh, brasil...
DT finally freed from ego wars.
After watching this, I think nobody really wants MP back.
hell yeah :D
@allanjenny Hillarous! and so true!
Hehe! I see me!! :D
9 Días y en MEXICO!!! a Huevo!!!
@MrRafataff I think that petrucci could have written the drums. I'm a drummer and i heard really good stuff about drum writing from guitarrists. I also write the other instruments for my band. No one is limited for an instrument, or genre, music is only one
Awesome song! Perfect performance! John Petrucci is a fucking beef 5:56 those arms!!
@xanthouscardinal
I'm not sure about that. I don't WANT him to come back, but I can see it happening.
in the beginning of the song, from left hi hat, then jump to right hi hat.. so far away from snare,,, how he trained that?
@MrRafataff Can you tell me where you heard this? Was it a video interview or did you read it somewhere? Also which parts are ""ridiculously technical" on the new CD? Cheers
James....wow....
Both John's are using MusicMan guitars.
@TheMobiusR john petrucci wrote drum parts? dont you mean portnoy?
He made outlines god damnit
i see me!!!!
@adambassman15 great you did not die from JP's solo
@MrRafataff JP wrote the parts, he said so himself!
Link to where he said it please? I've never heard that.
@NeedHeadMusic I just about survived!!! :P
i think MM is great.. Guys i hate to say that MP wont come back, but if u really like DT u should start liking MM..
I guarantee that if this wasn't a video, and you didn't know the date of this show, you would have no idea whether it was Mangini or Portnoy.
@MrRafataff "Far more technical than what you can create with a drum machine"

why do you thing he is coming back?
@adambassman15 Glad you were blown away, but you didn't watch DT. Portnoy wasn't behind the kit!
All the drums on the album, are made with "Toontrack - Superior Drummer 2.0"
Source: /watch?v=-QaHdj4GTL8
No he didn't, mate. He made primitive outlines to go with the songs and then gave Mangini creative control of his parts. You seriously think JP could have written some of the drum parts from the new album? They're ridiculously technical
@chrisg347 Looks like his usual MusicMan Bongo.
How come they didn't cast Petrucci as Conan The Barbarian in the remake?
@luizasara Concordo Luiza *_*
@smsphl new album
@s3baorias oh cool i didnt even know hahah
Mangini?
@singular23 Get with the times!!! I know Portnoy isn't in Dream Theater now, but Mike sure hell is the best replacement for him!!!
Mangini forgot to play the ride-hi hat pattern on the verses, that kind of details make me miss Mike so bad 😒
Lucas Chacon
also in the soft part before the solo ok constant motion. He doesn’t do ride hat patterns like that even though he can. I have no idea why he does this
Yeah he wrote how he would have want it but Mangini made it more like a ''Drummer'' would have done it !
@saraboombits "he can do things with one limb that people cant do with two"
Clearly, the comment was made out of ignorance.
5:15 aaaa
Petrucci did not write the drum parts. Can we please dispell this myth.
Great Vision Fail Sound Q.Q
portnoy invented the stuff, but Mangini is just a technical high end man.
4:27 neal morse moment there xD
@ironrushscorp i agree there not the same band. Portnoy was much more tight and was the life of that band. after stuff like budokan im really depressed at the choice of drummer. ill never buy anouther D.T, album because Mike was why I liked them to begin with.

@mrbeat1988 Yeah its better !
mangini kinda looks like ronnie james dio playing
all i can think is that they would have been so much better with minnemann.
Don't make idiotic assumptions.
The reason I say that is because you are obviously very biased. If someone made you listen to an unknown song with portnoy on drums, and they told you it was mangini, you would make the claim that the drumming isn't very good.
@jimmyEADG lol
@smsphl PETRUCCI!
yea but none of the drum parts really show off mangini's skill. hopefully there will be much better stuff on the next album
"Don't make idiotic assumptions."
And then your comment is 100% idiotic assumptions.
You are not talking to a beginner here, friend.Im so sorry i can notice the difference between portnoy and mangini and you can't.
The f***ing drums took all the sound...
So you don't know this song well enough to compare, or you are not a musician.
put in 0:55
Portnoy is brilliant in this part.Mangini didnt match.
is my first time that I listen to DT, and the drums is not the same without mike portnoy
YET AGAIN! You completely misunderstand what I say! I'm done, this is just getting ridiculous because you are basically arguing against an imaginary third person.
not the same without portnoy
FCValle Sherlock
indirect insult?Buddy, if mangini himself was readind this he would not feel insulted.There are 76378638 better drummers then protnoy when we are talking about technique.But not a single one of them is capable of replacing portnoy, because portnoy is very unique.This argument is stupid, i will never convince you because you ara just not capable of hearing the differences between the two musicians
dream theater Mangini did a waste of you!!
I rather see spitshields AGAIN on JP´s rigg than see Mangini on drums....And why does his drumset look like crap? Must be the ugliest drumset I´ve seen...LOL
