    The Cure is usually defined as "gothic rock" and "new wave"
    Robert Smith wrote Lovesong as a wedding present to his wife Mary Poole - they met in drama class when he was 14.
    Check out FOR SURE the songs:
    "Pictures of You"
    "Why Can't I Be You"

    I guess they would fall under British “New Romantic” or “New Wave” then more “Goth” genre. Saying, “I love this band!” would be a great understatement. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them live several times and meeting the band personally, twice. They all have such lovely personalities but I seemed to get on with Roger O’Donnell (keyboards) best. All of their songs are great but I think you’d enjoy their songs ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, ‘In Between Days’, and as a drummer myself, ‘Hanging Garden’ is excellent!

    • @jointheleanrat

      I'd put them in the New Romantic movement but they had a really dark edge.

    • @ThomCurley
      @ThomCurley Рік тому +7

      Just to clarify and forgive me, because I don’t know if new romantic means something different in the US, coz in the U.K., which is where they are from and were established, they are and were considered post-punk and latterly goth rock (which derived from the post punk bands like them, Bauhaus & The Banshees, who The Cure toured with and Robert played for too). Over here bands like early Duran, Visage, Spandau were New Romantics and that started later in the early 80’s, where as The Cure were well established by the time having began in 1978 (the year after punk, hence the phraseology) and had an LP out in 1979, pre dating that movement. They didn’t share that look, style or sound either. Just look at their wiki page, clearly states their genre/s.

      Great first 2 reactions, and to really get a feel for the band, "A Forest: Live from Werchter Festival 1981" in Belgium will not disappoint. They defiantly and creatively extended the song after being told it would be their last song to make way for Robert Palmer (of Power Station). You'll really see Robert Smith's talent as a guitarist from the early pre-make up days as they were morphing from post-punk band (songs like 1979's Boys Don't Cry and 10:15 on a Saturday Night - written at age 16) to new wave with a goth esthetic. Incidentally, since The Cure are the reason Depeche Mode members decided to form their own band, their keyboardist Andy Fletcher died last week at age 60. 'Somebody' would be a great song to remember him by despite it not containing keyboards - it's unlike anything you've heard by DM, featuring the songwriter Martin Gore on vocals.

    The punk movement in the UK was quite short (the Sex Pistols - easily the most important UK punk band, were only around for under 2 years), but it was extremely influential, and a great number of bands were started as a result. Punk's idea was "do it yourself" and "you don't have to be especially good to be in a band", and that certainly appealed to many in the late 70s in the UK, given how terrible the economic conditions were at the time. The Cure (originally The Easy Cure) were one of those bands - others included Siouxsie Sioux & The Banshees, Generation X (with front man Billy Idol, who soon went solo), and The Clash. Robert Smith became good friends with The Banshees, Siouxsie in particular, and even joined the band as lead guitarist for a year when they lost their previous member.
    The Cure has a reputation for Robert Smith's lyrics, which are often (and not always incorrectly) described as "dark and depressing", and Smith was a frequent subject of parodies making fun of his appearance (messy long hairsprayed hair and red lipstick) and his presumed depression, but many of his depressing songs were written about the general state of the UK in the late 70s and early 80s, when the UK was in a terrible state due to globalism/job losses, the 70s fuel crisis, immigration, and an overabundance of socialism. Even on the early albums, there were upbeat songs and sometimes cheerful or playful melodies. Certainly they became more cheerful in the mid-late 80s and early 90s, during the bands biggest time of success.
    I saw them on the Wish tour in the summer of '92, and that's one of my Top 3 concerts of all time (and I've been to over 350 live shows). They were incredible and sounded fantastic, and they certainly were in sync with the mood of the crowd on that hot summer evening.
    Just Like Heaven and Pictures Of You are among my Top 10 favorite songs of all time. The South Park guys, Matt & Trey seem to be fans as well: ua-cam.com/video/P4xCSbMfCFs/v-deo.html

    The cure was probably the end of the 80s Alternative wave. Their sound leaned into stuff like The Smiths, but The Cure was a big hit band by the end of the 80s. In the 80s, Alternative wasn't a style like Grunge. Alternative was a collection of bands that weren't interested in sounding like a Top 40 group. You could find The B-52, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, They Might be Giants, The Pixies, The Church, and the IRS years R.E.M. all in the same section of the record store (plus a lot more). It was the stuff that wasn't mainstream. The Cure came out of that kind of Post-punk creativity. But by the end of the 80s, some of those bands were starting to take over the mainstream.
