    Per frontman Robert Smith's analysis of the opening verse ("Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick"), the line is both a reference to his love of performing magic tricks in his youth and "about a seduction trick, from much later in my life," Yet, overall, the song has a very specific meaning about a very specific person. According to Songfacts, in an interview with Blender in 2003 Smith said that the song is about his wife Mary Poole and their star-crossed love as flatmates in London during the '80s. "The song is about hyperventilating - kissing and fainting to the floor," Smith told Blender. "Mary dances with me in the video because she was the girl, so it had to be her. The idea is that one night like that is worth 1,000 hours of drudgery."
    For the ballad about Smith's muse, the band was given a lot of input from Mary herself (as well as the girlfriends of other band members) before the final version was cut. In fact, many of the band's flames hung out during recording sessions and critiqued the music: "The girls would sit on the sofa in the back of the control room and give the songs marks out often," Smith told Rolling Stone
    The Cure is my absolute favorite band (I was a 90's Goth, and still hold it in my heart and style of dress now).

    This was a top 40 pop song that had no chorus and a nearly minute long intro. Pretty nifty achievement if you ask me. This song has a bit of a mandela effect with me, because it feels like really should have been used as an iconic song from an iconic 80s film, and yet it wasn't. But I'm pretty sure you could throw this on to the end of any teen, coming of age, or romance movie from the 80s and it would fit perfectly and make a great ending song.

Pretty sure you guys will find that New Wave is a very broad, diverse genre. Everything from, post punk, techno, guitar based, alternative dance, neo-psychedelia, etc. I noticed some downbeat tracks were winning the polls during the stream, but there are plenty of super high energy bands/tracks to choose from. The only problem with recommending a single track off Disintegration is that it almost feels like something is missing. The whole album really is a package experience, like Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. The Cure were known for dark, moody, goth songs early in their career and then Robert Smith decided to do a 180 and start writing more positive, upbeat songs. Of course they were still in their own, unique goth style.

    • @jaynagerber7474
      @jaynagerber7474 2 роки тому +3

      Technically they were at least as upbeat on their debut album (released in 1979, with almost nothing remotely close to dark, moody, nor gothic) as most of the stuff in the 80s. It was on their second through fourth albums (respectively "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith", and "Pornography") that they became known for the dark, gothic, and moody music (although on everything but "Pornography" - which was their darkest album, by far), you could still find some positive and upbeat vibes mixed in with their music.
      As far as styles, both "Disintegration" in 1989 (their 9th original studio album) and "Bloodflowers" in 2000 (12th original studio album) were throwbacks to the so called gothic period (so called because Robert Smith has categorically denied on multiple occasions that they were ever a gothic band). Robert has specifically said that "Bloodflowers completed a triumvirate along with "Pornography" and "Disintegration" (he actually used a different word than triumvirate, but I can't recall what it was at the moment, and that word basically expresses his meaning).
      Even on all of their other albums, there has been a mixture of styles and themes, and both upbeat and moody can be found (to some degree or another), with "Head on the Door" (7th original studio album) probably having the greatest mix of positive, upbeat and dark/moody themed music. Robert is one who has never been held down by conventions and popular sentiments, so he creates what he wants when he wants (even when it goes against the bands so called image or style).

    • @Craven01
      @Craven01 2 роки тому +4

      They never did a 180 degrees turn, thats a myth .. they had and still have both styles. if you ever been to one of their concerts you should known that. They still perform songs from both "genres". They started more upbeat, continued more dark and gloomy (but still had upbeat songs), became more upbeat again (yes its true that they wanted at one point to show the world that they are not as dark as people thought) and then continued somewhere in the middle.. it was never a 180 degrees turn, they were in both sides all the time.

    The Cure are arguably the most successful goth band ever.
    Also worth checking a lot of their other songs, I'd specially recommend The Caterpillar, it sounds like nothing you've ever heard before.

      Not goth in any shape or form... because of his hair.. goth music is far darker.. the cure is very commercial alternative.

      @@jaycordner3890 and here it is, as expected, some rando gatekeeper had to come and claim that they can't be considered goths because they've had success.

      @Marco Lopes Robert Smith left Siouxie and the banshees... they were goth. What is goth about the cures sound??? Its far to commercial and more like alternative because he looked the part. Listen to Bauhuas, Siouxie and tell me they sound similar. I like The Smiths but they ain't no goth band... that's for sure. And yes I grew up with the British culture. This was in my teens.. I ain't no rando and know a s... load about punk,SKA,goth,synth,pop,industrial, grunge etc.

    Robert Smith, such a great songwriter, up there with Lennon and McCartney in my books. An ability to write the perfect pop song like this and then write something like Fascination Street, Pictures of you or Last day of Summer. The man is a genius. If you enjoyed this track, check out Friday I'm in love, Mint Car, Boys Don't Cry, Inbetween Days, and Close to me.

    I've always loved it because it's whimsical. I also think it's a sad song of finding love and losing it and having a hard time with no longer having it. Btw that's Robert Smiths singing voice. I love so many of their songs. A Forest, Pictures Of You, Why Can't I Be You, A Letter To Elise, Never Enough, Lullaby, Boys Don't Cry, Catch, Burn, Close to Me, Lovesong, Fascination Street, Friday I'm In Love, Hot Hot Hot, Let's Go To Bed & The Walk.

    I was not a huge fan when I first heard them in the 80's. I really was more into the older stuff and music that originally did not get on the radio. More alternative stuff. I have since developed a deep appreciation for their musicianship since. They are now one of my top bands where my appreciation continues to grow with every new listen. Not just another synthesizer band that was so common in the clubs at the time. I find his vocal style offers a great deal of emotion into the songs. You should defiantly check out more from them. The early stuff is dark and goth in nature turning more poppy and mainstream in their following works. I'm sure they were influenced by others like Bauhaus, Joy Division, Suzy and the Banshees and probably David Bowie as well.

    • @jaynagerber7474
      @jaynagerber7474 2 роки тому

      They originally came on the scene at the same time as both Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees, as The Cure originally formed as "The Easy Cure" in 1976. So at most they were contemporaries (although contemporaries can still influence each other, to some extent or another).
      Bauhaus actually came later (forming in 1978), while David Bowie actually debuted far earlier, in 1962 (although he re-emerged in 1972 as Ziggy Stardust, which actually might have influenced Robert and the rest of the band before they formed).
      Of the four that you mentioned, three along with The Cure (outside of Bowie) were considered to be part of the post-punk movement; other labels (like gothic) didn't come along until far later into the 80s.

      Did you like their album Pornography? I didn't really grow up with The Cure at all, so was only aware of their poppier songs like this one, and I still like those radio-friendly Cure songs, but I didn't discover their darker stuff until much later in life. Which is probably a good thing, because it's a lot more impactful now I'm sure. When I discovered Pornography (the album, for those not aware lol) it was life changing for me, and still feels like some of the most moving and emotional music I've ever heard, although certainly not easy to get into at first listen.
