Their early 1979-1980 post-punk sound is incredible: Boys Don't Cry, So What, A Forest live at Werchter Festival, 10:15 on a Saturday Night (which Robert Smith wrote at 16). Along with The Clash, Bauhaus, Joy Division and Bowie, they were so different than anything else that came out of the 70's.
EXACTLY!!! We used to play a sort of game where you try to find the happy truly upbeat song from them. Sure you have catchy sounds but when you look at the lyrics to most of their classic songs...depressing and dark disguised in the sugary sound.
Love love love the Cure, and Robert Smith. "Close to Me", "Facsination Street", "Lullaby", "A Letter to Elise", "Boys Don't Cry"... the list just goes on and on. One of the best alternative bands of ALL TIME, hands down.
The happiest, saddest, brightest, heartbreaking, loveliest, melancholic, lonely, comforting thing in the world: The Cure. I wish I could give Robert Smith a big hug and whisper "thank you" in his ear...
Jay & Amber, “Pictures of You” (the full album version) from 1989’s masterpiece The Cure album "Disintegration" is a MUST LISTEN! "Pictures of You" is gorgeous, melancholy and magnificent! Enjoy!
I loved how the song is about the sadness of having nothing but pictures of her to remember her by. And then Microsoft used the song to advertise their picture sharing service (which eventually became Instagram, I think? Or a competitor for IG that was rebranded.) Not an upbeat song, but MS ad execs didn’t really consider that before playing it over happy skies and whatnot.
The Cure has been around since 1978, they were a huge hit with the alternative crowd in the 80's i loved their music as a kid. There style influenced many kids at the time, glad they're still making music to this day and glad you both enjoyed them.
The Cure was more than a band for many of us early 90s goth kids. Rock music had gone so dark in the early 90s....and The Cure was a band that spoke to us kids and told us that yes there are many dark things in this world....but there is also hope. Which is what this song is about. Every day of the week can be absolutely horrible in its aloneness....but there's always hope for that 1 time....that Friday....where you have love. The Cure literally saved the lives of many kids who felt hopelessness amid a world of people who didnt understand and who just wanted to rage. Goth kids just wanted to understand what they were feeling without being so depressed about it. The Cure told us that love was not only possible....but was real and within reach if we dont give up.
Clap, clap, clap, clap well said Jamie. Their meloncholy, sadness brought me hope many a night in high school. Don't think I would have survived if I don't find this band. Finally felt someone understood and that things would be alright in the end.
It's a good song but personally they've loads I prefer. The whole of 'Pornography' for a start. That album was their dark masterpiece. 17 seconds was good too, but at the end of the day I love most of their stuff.
Yes, The Cure was unique! The Cure started in the late 70's and became famous in the 80's. They are a product of the punk/new wave/alternative rock movement in Great Britain at that time. This band was part of the 2nd British invasion of the 80's. If I'm not mistaken, this song came out in the early 90's. Great memories !!! 🥰
The Cure's "Disintegration" Is one of the great alternative albums. Every song is worth hearing and "Pictures of You" is a heartbreaking masterpiece. Must do that next.
The Cure are not a 90s band. They were formed in 1978, and become hugely popular with Boys Don't Cry which was released in 1980. Since then, they kept their popularity througout the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Their popularity may have droped somewhat in the last decade or so, because I think they haven't been as active as they used to. They used to tour all the time, and were always reliably good live.
My kid (9) recently decided that he wants to buy Wish (the album this is from) which will be the his first album he's bought with his own money because he loves this song. I think I'm raising him well.
It came out in 92 on the Wish album, so was still close to the 80's. It won the best video award at the time. Just like Heaven and Pictures of you are also great songs they did in the mid to late 80's but they have so many. Just love them to bits and they're still performing and sound great, such a unique band with unique sound that as soon as you hear the music start you just know it's the Cure!
This song is from 1992 but I would class The Cure as an 80s act (one of the quintessential "alternative" bands of the decade). Their breakthrough in the US was very late, not coming until 1987/88.
The Cure formed in 1978 and was inducted into The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Their hay day was the 80's and early 90's and they are still together today....
Such a good band and song! My sister used to listen to them all the time. Robert Smith is a legend. Some other songs to check out: Fascination Street, Boys Don't Cry, Disintegration, Close To Me, The Lovecats, A Letter To Elise. The bit of the song was played in a VH1 Classic channel infomercial. Pop Rocks! Feel the flavor, it's the action candy! Only some of you all will know that jingle lol.
From 79 to 84, this band wrote great depressing songs that appealed to a small loyal audience, and were big in the UK. Starting in 85, they decided to change approach and write happier stuff like " in between days" and their career really took off. From that point, they were becoming a pop band with huge hit singles. This was one of their later hits in 92. Personally, I love their 2001 song " cut here", never understood why it wasn't huge
They wrote happier/more upbeat stuff before, like “The Love Cats”, “The Caterpillar” and “Let’s Go to Bed”. Some people associate them only with sad or slow dirgey stuff, so it confuses them when they occasionally release a pop song, I guess.
This is one of my all-time favorite groups. No doubt they were inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame. They were so influential to so many groups over the years. their strength has always been the unique sound, tone, and lyrics by frontman Robert Smith. They are one of few bands that, when you hear them, you tell yourself "yep, that's the Cure" If you want to deep dive into them, you must check out some of their earlier songs. I credit "A Letter to Elise" as the inspiration for my daughter's middle name. Such a great, emotional, smart band.
I watched their Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction concert from 2019. (Tuned in as a Stevie Nicks fan but left a Cure fan.) I immediately downloaded "A Forest."
Spot on...the 80s introduced a lot of new innovation, synthesisers, electric keyboards and the whole new wave driven by the UK bands, the 90s consolidated and refined what the 80s brought in. Late 80s and early 90s very similar. The Cure were massive in the late 80s and they were the pioneers of Goth music.
The Cure is one of those bands in the 80's that remind me of a certain time in my youth. full of wistfulness and yet at the same time youthful exuberance.
disintegration was such an iconic late 80s album. its the only cure album i owned but its still my favourite album of all time. from the first note to the last, i lose myself in just robert smiths utter melancholy and atmospheric euphoria. saw them in concert for this tour in phoenix az....amazing to see live and to listen too. they still play half of disintegration on tour to this day!!
Whenever people talk about the heaviest music made, they always mention metal bands and obvious stuff like that, but I always mention Disintegration. One of thee heaviest albums ever made!
The lead singer, Robert Smith was a guitarist in the goth/punk band, Siouxsie and the Banshees and then went out on his own. I'm not sure if you've covered that artist yet, but they'd be great for female Friday! Siouxsie (pronounced Suzi) has a history in music all her own. Try "Kiss Them for Me," "The Killing Jar," "Peek-a-boo," "Cities in Dust," and "Ornaments of Gold." Her cover of the Beatles song, "Dear Prudence" is unuque and memorable. For us here in the The States, her British accent can be difficult to decipher at times, but she's awesome!
I love this band for so many years. The unique thing is cheerful songs, but sadness in the voice en even the lyrics. They play with this concept so many years now.
Been a huge Cure fan since day dot. Robert Smiths lyrics are always worth listening to with your full attention. A lot of his songs are created from dreams that he's had.📀👍😁❤️
I love the Cure! It was the early 90s and I was just started 9th grade when this first came out. I remember my friends and I walking down the street, in our doc martins, ripped jeans, rock tees, and open flannels, signing this song out loud. It was a fun time! As Amber said, 90's music shows more emotion. I always say that it was a time when they weren't afraid to show their inner darkness and emotions. On another note, Robert Smith has a great love story himself with his wife Mary Poole. They met when he was 14 and have been married for almost 40 years.
Thanks so much guys! I had a The Cure poster on my bedroom wall as a teen, loved em. But Dad was a truck driver, and guys wearing nail polish make-up and hair spray just was too much for my father...he used to scream at me every day about the 'faggits' on my bedroom wall. Only made me fall in love with them even more, every album is gold...true pioneers that will never get the credit they deserve, such brilliant songs. X
The Cure were Goth style. Some kids in my high school LOVED them and for others, it wasn't really their thing. I liked them. This brings back memories.
The Cure is an 80's Band to me (and to a whole lot of people) Even though this song came out in '92 it still very much has a signature 80's Cure sound.
They were huge in the 80's. I went to a very large H.S. and everyone started dressing and wearing makeup like them it was crazy cool. I love them, great memories. ✌️❤
Jon Davis the lead singer of Korn..it's his favourite band. And you can kinda tell that he was influenced by Rob Smith singing style.. Rob Smith married his childhood sweetheart and is still with her today... Absolute legend..
This song is from the 90s but The Cure are actually an 80s band. Actually they formed in 1978. The Cure had a strong influence on the gothic rock genre as well as the subculture that eventually formed around the genre.
You probably hear the 80’s sound bc they formed in the late 70’s but had most of their songs in the 80’s. This was their first radio mainstream hit. Some 90’s bands to react to: 311 “Amber” Incubus “Wish You Were Here” Smashing Pumpkins “Mayonnaise”
This song was from 1992 but they had long since established themselves by this point. I guess if you're under 40 you think of them as a 90s band but for people like me who were in high school and college during the 80s they were definitely an 80s band. 7 of their 13 studio albums came out in the 1980s and they only had 2 during the 90s. They did have 3 live albums during the 90s though as they have had continued success through the years.
The Cure is really broke through into the mainstream here. Their sound is so ethereal and layered it just makes you float rather than dance. Usually you float underwater in the deep dark, but this was a rare floating on your back with the sun in your face song.
The Cure were a big influence on the 80s alternate rock and new wave. They started in the late 70s and were inducted in to the rock n roll hall of fame a few years ago. Inbetween Days is my fav song. Boys Don't Cry, Love Cats, Close to Me, On A Night Like This and Lovesong are great too.
The Cure is a band that spans decades from the late 70s to now. And it is very eclectic because of that. They had roots in punk, they became a goth standard, and they also did pop. I think you should listen to “The Thirteenth” for the horns. “Spiderman” for something really Halloween creepy. “Doing the Unstuck” is also a great one and inspirational. As for Valentine’s, I think it is pretty cool that Robert Smith, the lead singer and guitarist, had been married to his wife and high school sweetheart Mary Poole for thirty five years. ❤❤❤ Smith credits his stability to her strength. “Love Song” was his wedding gift to her. Before marrying Robert and the Cure’s success as a band, Mary was a nurse. I think a lot of women would find it hard to be married to the rock lifestyle, but Mary always seemed to be pretty strong in herself. For all the sad goth songs, Robert had always had it good in his love life.
When Jay jokes about "pop opera", it made me chuckle because in the 80s and 90s, the Broadway musical "Phantom of the Opera" was all the rage, and if you were in the student-theater circles, you heard a LOT of the music from that show, which was on the verge of opera-type music. It was very popular back then.
Their number one classic is 'A Forest' from their '17 Seconds' album, also a classic.. Gotta be heard to be believed. Kind of 'post-punk', less poppy than 'Friday' and as much of its time as Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead".
The Cure started in the 1970's but this was one of their most popular songs and was in the 1990's. Robert Smith actually started out as a drummer for Siouxsie and the Creatures. As for the "emotional" part of it, this is goth music, not at it's best, but 1990's goth hop all the same.
The smile on Ambers face is the reason this song was written. The cure have a huge amount of songs that are amazing. Welcome to the cure! Check out “ like cockatoos “ by them great song 🎶 😊
The cure started in the 70s and were pioneers of the post punk and goth rock genres of music. They got big in the 80s and towards the end of the 80s became more of a pop band. Before then, they were more dark. They inspired bands like nine inch nails.
The Cure is not a 90's band. They're a late seventies band (first album released in 1979) that had great success in the eighties maintaining themselves active way into the new millennium even if past their commercial peak. Perceived as a solid respected band in England in the first half of the eighties (they're 1981 album 'Seventeen Seconds' is a personal favorite), they finally cracked the American market with the 1985 album 'The Head On The Door'.
Upstairs room is my favourite song of there’s. I have seen them three times, and kiss me, kiss me , kiss me was the bes t concert i have been too. I was 14 but it was amazing! Love when people discover them! ❤
I’m glad you tapped into Robert Smith’s writing. What he has written can really be deep. Lyrically & musically check out: “Doing the Unstuck” “A Night Like This” *this one has a surprise instrument I know you’ll enjoy! “How Beautiful You Are” “Catch” Hope you check at least one or all of these. Thanks so much! I’ve been really sick lately and I can count on you to make me smile. 😊❤✌🏽
A song just popped into my head that I think you'll LOVE!!! Jr. Walker & The All-Stars - "Shotgun" The song opens with the sound of a shotgun and a drum roll and tenor saxophone.
The Cure! I was in my 20s and they were one of my fave bands from the 80s..check out songs from that time like "Boys Don't Cry" and "Fire in Cairo" that evoke the 80s. Another 80s band you should check out is a-ha and their song "Take on Me" 🎸
The Cure had been around for the whole of the 80s as the undisputed kings of Goth. Once the 90s rolled around they cheered up a LOT and they started to have some serious success.
The Cure were dominant in the soundtrack of my life in the early 80's. Check out "Jumping Someone Else's Train", the bass is slamming and so are the lyrics. I love that the Cure had such a long run. Great selection for Valentine's Day.
The Cure formed in 1978 and had much 'alternative' success in the eighties and pop success in the nineties. This might be why it sounds like eighties music to you. The song that first turned me onto them was "Close To Me" - it's very different than what you've heard from them so far but definitely worth listening to.
The Cure is actually an 80s band (actually formed in 1978) and kept going into the 90s and beyond. Check out more of their early stuff.
Definitely an 80s band. 90s band for The Cure doesn't sound right.
Yep. The Cure carried their 80s sound into the 90s with a little more pop sound in this one. Gotta do "Pictures of You" by The Cure.
Yes!
I’ll always think 80s. They did have some good stuff in the 90s too. But it was really contrasting to most of the grunge that was prevalent.
I remember when this came out a whole lot of us were puzzled by the fact the The Cure had actually put out an upbeat, happy song.
EXACTLY!!! We used to play a sort of game where you try to find the happy truly upbeat song from them. Sure you have catchy sounds but when you look at the lyrics to most of their classic songs...depressing and dark disguised in the sugary sound.
Robert dismissively referred to it as their "radio song". I love it, but I'm not a true emo like their hardcore fans.
Seriously after Disintegration I could not make any sense of this song.
Have you heard Why Can’t I Be You? It’s even more upbeat
Most of the pop type songs were mostly popular in the American market. Europe and UK preferred the darker stuff.
Love love love the Cure, and Robert Smith. "Close to Me", "Facsination Street", "Lullaby", "A Letter to Elise", "Boys Don't Cry"... the list just goes on and on. One of the best alternative bands of ALL TIME, hands down.
They'd have so much fun with the Close to Me video
Don't forget about Pictures Of You.
Idk…how do you guys think Jay is going to react to the video to Lully? 😁🥴
"The Lovecats"
Same here.
Enjoy!
Yes! "Pictures of You" is my favorite Cure song. It's hynotic. Let me also suggest "Lullaby" for Halloween.
The whole album “Disintergration” IS a must to listen to. My fav album of theirs
Mine too. The chimes are magical.
The Cure has been around since 1978, they were a huge hit with the alternative crowd in the 80's i loved their music as a kid. There style influenced many kids at the time, glad they're still making music to this day and glad you both enjoyed them.
Basically the soundtrack for a lot of us as kids growing up in this ever changing world, trying to find our way.
I always think of The Cure as an 80s band really - although yes, this was released in the early 90s!
I’ll never get tired of this song.
driving down the highway, start of the weekend, windows down, volume UP!!!!! love this song!!
Lifts my spirits and brings a smile to my face every time I hear this song!😊
Agreed. This song has been on every playlist I've ever made since it came out.
I've sang this song to myself every Friday since 1992
The Cure was more than a band for many of us early 90s goth kids.
I prefer their earlier songs from the 80s
fellow 90's goth kid here. Yes
Clap, clap, clap, clap well said Jamie. Their meloncholy, sadness brought me hope many a night in high school. Don't think I would have survived if I don't find this band. Finally felt someone understood and that things would be alright in the end.
Yes!!! This band got so many of us thru in those days.
far more of an 80's band than 90's
Love song by the cure is their best in my opinion
Along with The Forest
It's a good song but personally they've loads I prefer. The whole of 'Pornography' for a start. That album was their dark masterpiece. 17 seconds was good too, but at the end of the day I love most of their stuff.
Actually The Cure Formed In1978 Crawley West Sussex (U.K.)
I consider The Cure the #1 Alternative Rock band of the 80s. Love this song!!
Robert Smith came outta Siouxie & The Banshees back in the late 1970s. THE CURE 40th Anniversary Live From Hyde Park concert is magical.
Yes, The Cure was unique! The Cure started in the late 70's and became famous in the 80's. They are a product of the punk/new wave/alternative rock movement in Great Britain at that time. Yep, ‘92
@@geetarbube Thank you 😊
Modern Rock
Hello from London Town you got ALL right well done Lol.
@@keithryan3528 😊
A band from the 80s, although they were still around in the 90s. So many better Cure songs, but this is definitely a good choice for Valentine’s Day.
They’re still around now. New album coming
*from the 70s
I've never understood how this bouncy, blissed-out song could contain such pain and sorrow, but it's there, and I feel it every single time.
I agree with the others who've recommended "Pictures of You." Powerful lyrics with plenty of room for personal interpretation.
Yessssss! I love the Cure! This is a deep rabbit hole... hope you guys keep an open mind! My favorites are A Night Like This and Hot Hot Hot!
Oh man A Night Like This!!! Yes!!!!
3 bands that started late 70s & defined 80s music that are stll very much active are THE CURE, NEW ORDER & DEPECHE MODE
The Cure's "Disintegration" Is one of the great alternative albums. Every song is worth hearing and "Pictures of You" is a heartbreaking masterpiece. Must do that next.
100%.

Some say The Cure are the fathers of "EMO" music. Very big in the Goth/Dark Child culture in the late 80s & early 90s.
Amber, The Cure date back to 1978. They are still active today after 45 years.
Robert Smith is, I think, the only original member left in the band.
The band have been going for over 45 years. This song is 90s
The Cure formed in 1978 and was inducted into The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Their hay day was the 80's and early 90's and they are still together today....
Such a good band and song! My sister used to listen to them all the time. Robert Smith is a legend. Oh man, The Cure are such a great band. Robert Smith is a national treasure imo.
The 80s and 90s was so great.
If you try and categorize The Cure, you've got quite a task on your hands.
This band defies definition. It's why they are so good.
From 79 to 84, this band wrote great depressing songs that appealed to a small loyal audience, and were big in the UK. The cure was in 80s, another group from 80s i think yall would like is " Fixx" songs red skies at night, saved by zero
This is one of my all-time favorite groups. No doubt they were inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame. Anything from Disintegration is phenomenal. It’s a darker album, to be sure, but deep and interesting.

Dark? ish. It has nothing on 'Pornography' which is their dark masterpiece IMO and my all time favourite album of any band.
The Cure, the best different I was every introduced to back around 87 for me...been into their music ever since!
I always call this song, "Robert Smith's Calendar". 🤣🤣🤣
Ahhhhhh The Cure! Happy Times ❤️

Probably their most upbeat song!
I love this band for so many years. The unique thing is cheerful songs, but sadness in the voice en even the lyrics. They play with this concept so many years now.
I love that song, it came out in '92 but The Cure are from the 80's, kept going in the 90's and so on. They have many great songs, a very good band.
This is such a bright and fun song, and as Amber said, it really flows and doesn't stop! I really love it! More The Cure! :)
Dido - Life for rent or Boy meets girl - Waiting for a star to fall. Love your videos!
Been a huge Cure fan since day dot.
Robert Smiths lyrics are always worth listening to with your full attention. A lot of his songs are created from dreams that he's had.📀👍😁❤️
I remember last time I saw the Cure live last year in London and they played this song and it sounded so good live
I love the Cure! It was the early 90s and I was just started 9th grade when this first came out. Only made me fall in love with them even more, every album is gold...true pioneers that will never get the credit they deserve, such brilliant songs. X
The Cure was mainly an 80s band. That's why during the 90s they still had an 80s vibe.
The Cure "High"..Nuff Said.
That song is pure happyness.. Listen to the build of the song... A major band of all the time.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Plainsong, The Kiss, Burn, Fascination Street.....loved them in the 80's love them now.
Anyone who has ever dated a Goth Girl in the (1980s - 1990s) had to know every song by The Cure.
They were huge in the 80's. I went to a very large H.S. and everyone started dressing and wearing makeup like them it was crazy cool. I love them, great memories. ✌️❤
Really so much broader than you’ve experienced. Seriously influential with a gigantic catalog, spanning from 1978 to now….
Your knowledge of music is getting better and better! Really impressive!
Jon Davis the lead singer of Korn..it's his favourite band.
And you can kinda tell that he was influenced by Rob Smith singing style..
Rob Smith married his childhood sweetheart and is still with her today...
Absolute legend..
I've always loved them since the 80s. I have all their albums. 😁 A very eclectic band.
This was their first radio
mainstream hit.
Some 90’s bands to react to:
311 “Amber”
Incubus “Wish You Were Here”
Smashing Pumpkins “Mayonnaise”
This song was from 1992 but they had long since established themselves by this point. I guess if you're under 40 you think of them as a 90s band but for people like me who were in high school and college during the 80s they were definitely an 80s band. 7 of their 13 studio albums came out in the 1980s and they only had 2 during the 90s. They did have 3 live albums during the 90s though as they have had continued success through the years.
Love the cure! Got too listen too their other songs! The last day of summer, the kiss! Burn! Prayers for rain! A hundred yrs!
The Cure is really broke through into the mainstream here. Their sound is so ethereal and layered it just makes you float rather than dance. Usually you float underwater in the deep dark, but this was a rare floating on your back with the sun in your face song.
Great band! Burn is a great song too and was featured in the movie The Crow
what you are feeling is the unstoppable urge to spin like a child. btw - not only sings but one of the best guitarists ever.
I LOVE this band! This is one of my favorites! 🥰
Love The Cure! Happy Valentine's Day you two!
Perfect pop tune.... So many good tunes from the Cure... Good live as well
Love the Cure from first time I heard them in my early twenties now 57 still love them
I’m glad you tapped into Robert Smith’s writing.
What he has written can really be deep.
Lyrically & musically check out:
“Doing the Unstuck”
“A Night Like This” *this one has a surprise instrument I know you’ll enjoy!
“How Beautiful You Are”
“Catch”
Hope you check at least one or all of these.
A hidden and unknown gem is This Twilight Garden. Beautiful
So glad you picked this one! Such great music!
The Cure! I was in my 20s and they were one of my fave bands from the 80s..check out songs from that time like "Boys Don't Cry" and "Fire in Cairo" that evoke the 80s. Another 80s band you should check out is a-ha and their song "Take on Me" 🎸
the cure is just fun to listen to, also to watch. my favorite song by them is pictures of you. give it a listen it is a beautiful song.
In 2019 they were finally put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was lovely. So influential, so consistent, such great musicians.
The Cure are great at creating something unique from very simple elements.
They were dark and angsty in the 80’s and fun loving in the 90’s.
This was the first happy sounding song from The Cure. Previously nearly every song was sad or melancholy.
The Cure formed in 1978 and had much 'alternative' success in the eighties and pop success in the nineties. This might be why it sounds like eighties music to you. The song that first turned me onto them was "Close To Me" - it's very different than what you've heard from them so far but definitely worth listening to.
My love of the absurd appreciate that you posted this on a Tuesday.
