I straighten my hair out most of the time, because naturally it’s like yours. When it’s straight it does not get knotty. I get so fed up of it getting knotty frizz! I usually put it up at night, as I find that helps. My thick hair is fine until I go to bed! and need to brush knots out the next day. I use a silk pillow which helps a little! I also get helmet hair! which really doesn’t help my problem. What do you do over night, to keep your hair the same as it is after you have finished washing and drying it please? Not to mention the obvious! but I really don’t want to go to bed looking like an old lady with a cap on! Not exactly conducive to your sex life😂. I’m sure all you girls out there with curly haired know exactly what I mean. 😱🙃😂
After trying to embrace my curly/wavy hair for a year I finally gave up. I did this last night, and I'm IN LOVE! This method finally worked! Thank you❤
I just found this video and want to say THANK YOU! I’ve been trying to embrace my curls and just couldn’t seem to get it right. You explaining the “why” for each step of the products helped so much, and my hair looks amazing!
I just washed my hair before the video was posted, I used the deep conditioner, cream, and gel too! I find the gel gives a softer hold than the mousse, I’ve tried both of them and I prefer the way gel looks.
Holy crap!! I finally found someone with hair like mine!!! It has always made me so self conscious when watching videos from other curly people because their hair just looks so fricking thick. Thank you so much for posting these videos. Gonna go a binge everything now
I’m glad you made a video using the NYM’s curl line. I’m loving my Aveda curl creme and have been eyeing the NYM curl line since it’s affordable. I liked the results on your curl pattern and might have to give this a try!
I barely have any good curly hair products here in my country, so just to get started I bought the latest NYM line from the US. So this routine is great for me!!! Thank you!
SO glad I found your channel! I have a feeling my hair is going to thank me for re-educating myself on how to properly care for it as I get older...thank you!
I use this entire line, I love it but I noticed lately that my hair has not been coming out as well as it usually does. I skipped putting in the curl cream, put in Moouse and then put in gel. I got an amazing cast, and then scrunched out most of the crunch and it looked amazing!
My hair is a curly as yours. I used Ouidad products for years. To me, it's a lot of work and even maintenance in between washing. Only looks good the day of, and maybe the next day, even sleeping with satin pillow, etc. Then I'd have to reapply product, work my hair back into place, etc. Personally, I find it easy to blow dry. But kudos do you...your hair looks amazing.
4:24 THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS!! I always felt bothered by that happening to me, and I was never sure if it was an issue with me or my hair type or something, but nobody would ever talk about it!! Glad to know it's normal 😌
Hi Gena, I have to say thank you so much because your video has given me hope :). I was following other videos about plopping (and putting product on in the shower?!) which gave made my hair look so bizarre on my scalp and it would take 5 HOURS TO DRY! You are absolutely right! I have fine wavy hair, that I've been straightening for the past 28 years and now have decided to embrace the wave! I'm also going to stop coloring my hair and embrace the gray! Love your videos!
I used to Monat hair products and they worked great for my curly hair. However, it got to expensive for me for the time being so I tried not your mothers curl products and I’m really liking this brand. I was excited to see you use some of their products in the video. You have beautiful curls!
I found the mousse to be too sticky and too crunchy; it stayed crunchy. I like the gel better because I can de-crunch it when I am done with drying. My hair is fine and thin. Love the Curl Talk set. I’m going to try the mask.
Thanks Gena! Love your videos. We can’t get ‘not your mothers’ in my country so I will be taking some of your tips and tricks to use with my John Freida dream curls 😄hopefully with same outcome ✌🏽
Thank you 😊 I have straight hair , but my daughter has beautiful curly hair and I’m sending this video to her. I need to check and see if you have the best haircut to ask for when going to the salon… ❤
I have been watching a ton of your videos after discovering you the other day. You are helping me so much. My hair has become so much less dense over the years . I am 60 years old and I have to take a steroid for adrenal failure because I do not make cortisol in my body anymore. Steroids can make hair fall out so I am always fighting the hair loss. My hair is 3a/3b I have straighter spots and doily spots and it can be frustrating. I’ve been soending a ton on Oribe products for the last 20 years or so and each bottle is $42-$56 and I have a lot of product. But since learning about not your Mother’s and also CurlSmith products I have biught a few to see how I like them. I love the Oribe products but sometimes I struggle with too mulch product in my hair and I have to rinse and then play the experiment game with a little of this a little of that until I get it right. It can be so frustrating. Then I moved to a rural area ad used to have a wonderful hairdresser. This person I go to doesn’t know how to color my hair correctly and she ALWAYS cuts too much off and I tell her, remember I will lose 2”-3” after my hair curls up. But she never learns.
Hey thank you for mentioning dry detangling.. i thought only i did that because for me wet detangling was a hairfall fest . your hair and my hair seem very similar in texture..and when you mentioned wet frizz...girl..i could just cry . hope to try these steps and get amazing results like yours .. keep up the awesomeness!!
Seriously considering switching to the CGM. I always thought I had straight hair with waves in my under layers but my hair is curly when it is wet (at least until it finishes air drying)
I followed your video but I used gel. Didn’t have mousse but will get that too. Looks pretty good. It is nice. I need to practice some more but very surprised on how it turned out. Thanks for the video.
Hi Gena Marie, I'm not so new t the CGM, but I'm trying to figure out if I need more moisture or protein. I recently got my hair cut and colored (that is a MUST), but my hair looked very frizzy and didn't have defined curls - that seems to have been happening lately. I have high porosity, low density, thin hair, a little above shoulder length, I think 2A/SOME 2B curls. I watch all your videos and recently watched the one using CurlSmith Weightless Air Dry Cream and used it. My curls are MUCH better. I really like it a lot... I just bought "Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Deep Conditioning Hair Masque". I've looked at the ingredients, and I THINK it's very moisturizing and protein light, if there's any protein in it at all. I'm hoping to use this on my next hair wash day. Does this seem right? I think I should be using a more moisturizing deep conditioner... do you agree? I look forward to your answer!
I am going to have to try damp styling. I usually always style my hair when it's really wet. Maybe I'll have a better hold and use less product Thanks for sharing this!
Yes! Definitely worth a try. You can always add more water to areas that need it as you go. It doesn't dilute the product as much so you get more hold :)
I really like the Curl Talk mousse, but it makes my day two hair look greasy even after clarifying. I’ve heard that other people experience this a lot too, and my friend told me try foams instead. Hope this helps someone :)
I like the mousse because it does hold the curls for at least three days for me and there’s something about it that doesn’t allow to my hair to shrink too much. However, when I put the mousse on my hair it gives it a yucky dry, tangly texture, it’s weird. Any suggestions?
If I use too much I get a product-y feeling on my hair with the Curl Talk products. I love them, but I do find I need to make sure I clarify when using them.
Thank you for sharing your techniques. Your hair is so pretty! I'll be trying this method for the next month. Also, can you please let us know what color nail polish you are wearing in this video? Love it! Thanks again and please take care :)
Thanks so much for making these videos, I love watching them and learning new tips for taking care of my hair! Could you maybe do a review of the Maui Moisture products?
How should I know when to deep condition my hair with a moisturizing deep conditioner vs a protein one? I have 2c/3a curls so it’s sometimes hard to tell lol. Thanks!
I know its been so long since you asked but just came across your comment lol. I read somewhere that if you try to stretch a strand (wet or dry) and it snaps immediately then you have too much protein. If you hair is breaking and shedding then you need protein. I'm paraphrasing but that's a general idea
I'm only starting wearing my hsir wavy after about 15 years of blowing it out. Wasn't even on purpose but I'm enjoying it. I like your videos not sure I want to use gel yet because most of them I dont like but I prefer curl cream + light hold hair spray.
Can you do a drug store protein-free routine 😓 ❤️ I’ve checked out your videos on how to fix protein overload but the products mentioned aren’t very accessible/affordable. Then I went out and bought “protein free” products suggested by other youtubers and they ended up having protein! Now I got trust issues lmao and you’re the only one I trust!
I'm late posting this. I watch a lot of curly hair videos. I have some favorites, but this video is the closest I've seen to how I do my hair. I love it! I appreciate and have tried the different "techniques" if you will. But this is and always has been the easiest way to do my hair. I thought I was weird applying a little extra gel after putting in curl cream and gel and scrunching my hair with a t-shirt. The only thing I do different is waiting for my hair to air dry a little before diffusing. I am going to try it how you did and see if that works. Thanks for the video.
I finally bought Not your mother’s shampoo, it’s the best…. I have really long thick curly hair and it gets tangled and frizzy. When I brush my hair after washing it actually hurts my head.
I live in a Florida where it’s very humid and Not Your Mother’s is amazing for hold, but I think their line has a lot of perfume. For anyone with allergies or sensitivity to smells this like can be an issue.
Hi Gena. I have really fine hair and lately, not a lot of it…. I never comb or brush it anymore when in the shower to de tangle or while applying product….I am afraid it will flatten my curls, not enhance them….What are your thoughts about that? Thanks for your video. Your hair looks great!
Years ago when I was younger, my sister and I would wash our hair and we just flipped our head upside down, put mousse on our heads and scrunched. Our hair was longer and thicker though. I don't know how that would work now but I'm going to try this method. My hair is not real curly but curly/wavy...so hope this works for me!! ❤️ One question, does the mousse still make your hair hard and crunchy?
the curl talk gel is good for my hair because it doesn’t make my hair crunchy because of the looser hold. i have more wavy hair so a gel with more hold just doesn’t do as good to me
The Curltalk cream isn’t CGM approved unfortunately 😕 it’s the only product from that line(that I know of) that isn’t so it’s easy to miss. Loving your videos though!! 🥰
I don't usually worry about waxes, especially because I clarify. Also if you use it with the Curl Talk shampoo, I'm sure it removes the C13-14 Isoparaffin, considering that shampoo removes silicone and hard water build-up which are much stickier. Most lathering shampoos probably would remove the wax too.
@@GenaMarie I didn’t even think of that! I do use the shampoo too I use the whole line(except the curl cream)!! I think I’ll give the curl cream another shot because I remember liking it before I realized it wasn’t “CGM Approved”! Thanks for the information and for responding 😌💕
How do you stop frizz. I have followed yourself and others like Manes by Mel but I am still get frizz. I have dense hair that is medium to some course.
Thank you Gena! I also have low density fine curls. What do you recommend for a leave in conditioner and cream styler that don't cause product build up?
Love your hair videos, and your new cut. Do you get a wet cut, and see a regular stylist, and what do you ask for? I feel like the back of my hair is heavy and the curls don’t start at the root anymore...maybe time for a cut.
I've been wondering- how do you sleep? Everywhere I look it says not to brush your hair, but when I wake up my hair is a pile of tangles and frizz, so it's kind of mandatory. I wash my hair once a week- I can't wash it every day to "refresh" my waves/curls. I guess I've had curls/waves since I was a child, but my mother always told me to brush my hair, so I would obediently brush them out. I just thought my hair was supposed to be "fluffy". I don't straighten my hair or do anything, I've just been brushing it and thinking my hair was fluffy. But I recently met up with a friend with wet hair and she told me if I put products in my hair (gel, mousse, etc) that I could keep my hair curly and stay away from frizz. So I looked into it and it's very confusing?? Is gel only a styler, or do you use it everyday? (same for mousse) Again, how do you sleep without tangles? Do you brush your hair? Do you use gel everyday or only when you wash your hair? Humidity and frizz? (I live near the coast- it's very humid) Please help!
I’m learning so much from your videos, the problem I’m having is using that pink brush my hair just gets all tangled, will you please give me some pointers?
Hi I have natural wavy hair and it’s very thick. I have straightened it for years, but for just over a year I’ve developed psoriasis and severe seborrhoec dermatitis. I’ve tried way too many shampoos, and treatments to try to ease the itchiness and the re growth of new scales. I’ve now decided to try the curly method and have bought products with acv as people have mentioned that acv is excellent for the scalp. Do you have any recommendations or advice?
I love your videos. I’m wondering something. I am new to all of this and have the products but haven’t tried yet in my own. I would like to practice this and only do air drying today. I will likely want to try again in 2 days because I have an event and want it to look fresher. Do you suggest a specific routine for us that are just kind of practicing? I prefer to do things a few at a time to learn it thoroughly? For ex, would it be okay to just do the cleanse, deep condition and leave in and air dry?
I need help. I have wavy hair and it is really poofy and frizzy. I’ve tried gel and mouse but my hair is straight towards the ends in some area and I try to break the cast because it looks so dry and hard. It doesn’t feel or look healthy, I really don’t know what to do.
I'm really just beginning myself, and i hope other Gena vids or someone experienced helps you, but i can suggest: Make absolutely sure the products you use don't have sulfates, see what happens if you only "wash" your hair out with conditioner, and use a deep conditioning mask. If your hair is also breaking really easy you might need protein, so a mask with protein could help (you can DIY or buy one). I'm not sure about gel or mousse. It could be the ones you use have too much drying alcohol in them? If you can't skip that step for a while, i'd look in Gena's product suggestions or find an approved Curly Girl one. Curlscan.com has a searchable list of all products. Good luck!
Have you had a trim? Straight ends usually mean damaged that needs to be cut off. If you don't have damage, it could be too much protein. Clarifying first, then using a protein-free mask like the Curl Talk one showed in this video will help.
I've never in my life been able to rake my fingers all the way through my hair 😓 when I've tried to brush style, I had to use so much leave in its like I didn't even wash my hair
Hi I've been loving watching your video's! I have struggles to figure out exactly what works for my hair for years.. I would say I have naturally beach wavy hair.. Depending on the day they curls will be more defined other days I feel like my hair is half wavy half straight.. I am always struggling to find the right products. I did try the shea moisture products that was recommended for type 2 hair yet they weighed my hair down to just feel more greasy I did go in and rinse my hair again the second day cause I just felt like I needed to get a lot of that product out. I was going to try the not your mothers curl talk.. Would you recommend this for me or is there any other kind of products that you would recommend?
I'm new at this; Did you apply mousse and gel? I have greying wavy hair and am confused about the cast which I think I need to create while my fine hair is drying to keep the wavy curl.
My hair is very difficult to style, I have wavy and puffy hair and I tried everything and nothing works. I’m trying to see what works on my hair, the protect I use is Aussie, I’m not sure if that’s what’s causing my hair to get way to frizzy and puffy. I just need some recommendations for my hair and some advice on my hair
Should refresh everyday until your next wash day if you have high porosity hair? Sometimes I'm not going anywhere and don't feel like doing anything to my hair, but it does get dry.
My hair is the same way! I haven't really been refreshing every day since I'm home most days. To add moisture, you can just mix some leave-in or cream with water and smooth it over your ends, then air dry. If I'm really trying to have it look good, I will add some more gel or mousse and diffuse instead.
Thanks so much for watching! For a step-by-step guide and all product links, check out the blog post here! genamarie.co/2021/01/beginner-curly-hair-routine-using-drugstore-products-cgm-friendly/
Gena, did you get a deva cut? What did you tell your stylist for your haircut, is it layers? I'd love for mine to look similar
1. dry detangle
2. conditioner
3. shampoo (1-2 times)
4. cotton T-shirt/hair repair towel
5. deep conditioner/hair mask (15 minutes)
6. leave-in conditioner
7. defining cream (+curl gel)
8. style with hairbrush (optional)
9. mousse/curl gel
10. cotton T-shirt/hair repair towel
11. defuser
12. air dry and style with hands
Make sure to keep your hair wet in between products! :)
After trying to embrace my curly/wavy hair for a year I finally gave up. I did this last night, and I'm IN LOVE! This method finally worked! Thank you❤
I am currently doing it like literally right now I am hoping I get the same results as you😊
@@KS-th8be did u get good results?
I also gave up but I started using a bonnet while I sleep and I’ve never had more shrinkage!! I really recommend using one!

You've got so much volume & definition!!! Cutting off those damaged ends really helped your hair & I'm LOVING it!!

Hi Gena, I absolutely enjoyed your video! Thank you so much!!
Can you do a curly hair routine that’s vegan friendly? I love your tutorials :)
My roots are flat so thank you! I will try it to see if my roots get curly
I really like the Curl Talk mousse, but it makes my day two hair look greasy even after clarifying. I’ve heard that other people experience this a lot too, and my friend told me try foams instead. Hope this helps someone :)
I haven't noticed greasy hair, but I do get buildup after awhile of using just the Curl Talk products. I just have to clarify more when using them.
Your hair is getting longer! Wow! Yeah!!!
Great to see you today; and thank you for sharing
I just found you on IG and UA-cam. Your videos are phenomenal! Thank you!
Good video but may I make a friendly suggestion... try parting it a little more on the side than what it is it would be more flattering

Sure! FYI These NYM Curl Talk products have amino acids, which are smaller forms of "protein" that aren't as likely to cause protein overload.
@@GenaMarie ohhh okay 😁 btw I binge watch your vids n follow your tips and there’s already HUGE improvement in my curls! Thank you 🙏

Yea r
I live in a Florida where it’s very humid and Not Your Mother’s is amazing for hold, but I think their line has a lot of perfume. For anyone with allergies or sensitivity to smells this like can be an issue.
Hi Gena. I have really fine hair and lately, not a lot of it…. I never comb or brush it anymore when in the shower to de tangle or while applying product….I am afraid it will flatten my curls, not enhance them….What are your thoughts about that? Thanks for your video. Your hair looks great!
Loved your routine 😘 surely gonna try it !!🤗🤗
im confused on why we shampooed AFTER the conditioner, please elaborate
Do you have a simplified version for guys with long hair?
I have wavy but frizzy and too much puff hair. Will I get rid from my frizzy and puffy hair my following this routine??
Thank you Gena! I also have low density fine curls. What do you recommend for a leave in conditioner and cream styler that don't cause product build up?
I haven't found the perfect drugstore leave-in or cream yet, but higher end, I love the Curlsmith Weightless Air dry Cream: bit.ly/36q5DB5
@@GenaMarie I will have to check it out. Thank you :)
Gena Marie… Have you tried LUS Brand?

(same for mousse)
Again, how do you sleep without tangles?
Do you brush your hair?
Do you use gel everyday or only when you wash your hair?
Humidity and frizz? (I live near the coast- it's very humid)
Please help!
Try using silk pillow cases. It leaves your hair smooth and frizz free. Also great for your skin! xx
@@shraddhaadhikari4121 thx :)
How often should I shampoo and condition my hair?
At night do you rinse the product out? Also do you use a heat protectant spray before using the diffuser?
Hi Gena, the curl talk shampoo and conditioner contains shea butter. Would that weigh down fine hair?
I love your videos. I’m wondering something. I am new to all of this and have the products but haven’t tried yet in my own. I would like to practice this and only do air drying today. I will likely want to try again in 2 days because I have an event and want it to look fresher.
Do you suggest a specific routine for us that are just kind of practicing? I prefer to do things a few at a time to learn it thoroughly?
For ex, would it be okay to just do the cleanse, deep condition and leave in and air dry?
This shampoo is also a chelating shampoo that gets out hard water build up on your hair
@Kirsten Nicole not super soft but with the conditioner it definitely makes it soft. I feel like you can tell it feels clean. I use it once a month
My 6 and 4 years old have hair like you. I don’t want to use the hair dryer? Can I just let it air dry, and what would the result be?
Have you tried the NYM Curl Talk Exfoliating Scalp Scrub?
What do you use in between deep conditioning if you use it once a week? Just use a leave in conditioner?
I am currently ON chemotherapy. My curly hair is super dry. Do you have any recommendations? Also, I need drugstore bargains.
If I deep condition can I also do a hair mask ? Or is it best to only do one
I've never in my life been able to rake my fingers all the way through my hair 😓 when I've tried to brush style, I had to use so much leave in its like I didn't even wash my hair
Do we have to use all of these products to get the look that you have?
Are the products ok for color treated hair ?
What is you just air dried? Would it still be ok to use all these products?
Hi ! Do you have to use mouse or gel to get these types of results ?? Or is just cream okay ?
First shampoo or conditioner ?
If I have 2b fine curls can I still follow this routine and use these products?
Are all Curl Talk products CGM? And is this line good for really dry hair?
Your hair looks amazing 😻
Thank you!!
Do you rotate the deep conditioner WITH protein and deep conditioner WITHOUT protein each week?
This might be a dumb question but can guys do this too.
Yes!!
What is the brush. Brush makes my hair frizzy
@@GenaMarie Thanks!!
