You're seeing similar things play out in the Discovery Warner merger. An outside group comes in and just starts laying waste to years' worth of projects, just to save a dime. WCW was Ted Turner's baby, and once the suits at AOL Time Warner got him out of the way, they did a fire sale on most of his assets.
I wore the "Last" button out on my remote control back in the day switching back, and forth between Raw, and Nitro on Monday nights...Those were the days...TNT, and USA!
Wrestling was great right up until the end of the Monday night wars
The day WCW died was the beginning of the end for pro wrestling. The ratings, the popularity, and the creativity. It will never be the same ever again.
shut up nerd. it wasn’t and you are being dramatic
Iv said this for years. It's the truth
You can hear the frustration in DDP's voice.
And I agree with you Dallas, something was rotten in Denmark. That was Vince McMahons MO.
I would not be surprised if Vince made an under-the-table offer and had everybody sign a non-disclosure.
Which would mean, Vince really did win the war.
And screwed Jerry Jerrett.
Even more devious than anybody knows.
When Jamie Kellner decided that he didn’t want wrestling on the Turner stations WCW became nothing more than a tape library. It was really nothing more than that. Even Bischoff said that WCW was worthless without a tv deal.
Turner stations is a joke today because of that guy AEW is a joke 2
To this day...something about the sale of WCW just doesn't seem right.
Hi there, I just wanted to tell you that I find that you have a really good show and your are trully a good host. Hope your channel and your career keep growing!
It wasn't a conspiracy. Vince won the right of first refusal if WCW was ever up for sale when he sued WCW about the Outsiders being inferred to be invaders employed by WWE and also that Scott Hall was acting too much like the Razor Ramon character. The WCW lawyers thought that would never happen since WCW was owned by one of the largest companies in the world, so they included it in the out of court settlement.
kevin nash mentioned this on his podcast
But didn't Vince turn down the first opportunity to purchase WCW, which allowed Bischoff/Fusient Media Ventures to make their offer?
@Rob Nelson No, everybody thought it was an open bid process as it normally would be. Everyone was shocked when they were told Vince was buying it for so little, and then they found out about the settlement clause. Why would Vince turn down the purchase? It feeds into his ego that he owns his greatest competitor. Plus, if he did turn it down, how the hell did he end up owning it?
@North Of Nashira From what I've read/heard he (Vince) was offered the chance to buy WCW in mid/late 2000, but turned it down. Then Jerry Jarrett made an offer and was either turned down or ignored (depending on source). Bischoff put together his group (Fusient Media Ventures) and allegedly had a Letter of Intent (I think that's what it was called) to purchase and was going through the due diligence process when AOL/TW pulled the TV portion out of the deal, which caused Fusient to pull out.
I wouldn't mind if someone wrote a book/did a video/whatever about the behind the scenes of the whole sale process. I'm sure the truth (or as close as we could get) would be buried somewhere in all the comments/stories regarding the sale.
@@Skorpio420 Vince never turned it down. Everybody else was trying to get ahead of things and jockey for position, but Vince took his time knowing that nothing would be able to move forward until he made an offer or passed. TV getting pulled happened before Vince even threw his hat in the ring.
Rich people wanted wrestling gone, NWA Wrestling helped make TBS, WWE won no war, it was just sold WCW, AEW on TBS today, they should have stuck with NWA style wrestling.
Jarrett and Bischoff both made very good offers, Jarrett probably had more solid financial backing (no insult to Bischoff there, Jarrett knew a lot of people with a lot of money) but both were much better than what they wound up getting.
Hell, for 4.3 million Jerry Jarrett (and possibly Eric Bischoff) could have put that money down out of his own pocket.
Well they still need a Network to put it on
@@rondoughhowell6442was wwf on tnn by this point? they couldve been an option. or what about upn, spike or syfy?
If Bischoff had acquired WCW back in 2001 wrestling would be in a lot better place today. I switched off wrestling in late-2001 and have never been back since. I’m not alone in that.
I was a WCW fan I really believe vince sent Russo to pur WCW under its really strange I know the ratings were alre😢going down wen Russo got there but come even some the wrestlers from wwe mite have played a part in it just my opinion
I-think-most-everybody-didnt-realize-or-know-that-the-WCW-film-library-would-be-included-with-the-sale
hogan claims he turned it down which i don't believe
WCW beat the living dog crap out of WWF for weeks it was funny Vince was always so pissed hahahaha
So why did Jim cornett, Jim Ross, Bruce prichard and countless other's said Vince McMahon got it for less than a million before all he bought was the video library
Now I would have REALLY loved to have seen what Jerry Jarret could have done with WCW ! That is one hell of a 'what if ' situation right there that could have changed history . Also I wish somebody else could have bought ECW ! They were cutting edge even thoygh they lost a lot of talent . With a bigger budget and still keeping it gritty could have been huge !!!!
I never understood why turner sell wcw to Vince for only 4 millions when he had other offers for more money
There is no chance Bischoff was able to raise $50 million plus have the ability to take on $30 million in contracts. Nobody is backing Bischoff with $80 million dollars.
The other offers were contingent on WCW keeping their TV deals. AOL-Time Warner didn't want to air wrestling anymore. At that point, they were only selling the rights to claim the talent contracted under WCW (not including the people that signed directly with AOL-Time Warner), the rings, the video equipment, the belts, any intellectual property, and the tape library. The only part of that worth actual money was the tape library and that was really only worth money to Vince since he was the only one with distribution outlets already set up.
That`s Unbelievable 🤥
Yeah the infiltrator was named Vince Russo
Dude. This is my Star Wars argument right here. If I knew it was up for sale for 5.5 billion... If George Lucas would have let me know (why would he but..) tell me which bank on earth isn't going to give ANYONE 5.5bil as a loan toward StarWars... Indiana Jones... Maniac Mansion and everything else that is Lucas Film. Go on. Tell me which bank wouldn't be sitting around saying "You know... if this guy succeeds...we get our money. If this guy fails... WE GET STAR WARS!!!!"
If there wasn't a sly plan to get it to Vince... it's a sign nobody making choices at Turber had a clue anymore.
I wish Jerry Jarrett ended up buying WCW.. I believe Bankrupt Bischoff wouldve failed miserably if he bought it
