DDP was as over as anyone in 1997 and stayed over until the end off WCW. Look at the pop he got when he took off the mask as the stalker in WWE. It was bigger than almost any other wcw wrestler that came over.
That whole David Arquette thing would’ve destroyed a lesser talent and the stink never would’ve washed off. Somehow not only was DDP able to come out the other side still beloved by fans, but also he made the only good moments of that angle while it was happening.
Wwe ruined him. Kind of like Bret in WCW
I think he was probably more over than any other solo wrestler in 1998. Unfortunately, WCW was doing that Oldberg strek.
Started watching wrestling about 1986 when I was 5 years old and watched it pretty regularly up until around 2002. For most of that time I liked WCW/NWA better than WWF. I enjoyed both but for the most part I just preferred WCW.
Thats me, too, but I was 7 in 86, and always said the same thing. Even as a kid, the Crockett NWA somehow felt more real n tougher than WWF, looking back I think bc WWF had the bright blue rings, and stadium lighting, where JCP had different colored mats, an the lighting was lower, it looked grittier and less produced. I stopped watching wrestling reg. in about 94, an only watched it sparingly since. I come back to shoot interviews to hear what my childhood heroes were like lol
I'm with both of ya! I was a East Tennessee kid in the 80's and Crockett NWA was the biggest thing going back then! Not just wrestling either, at my elementary school for about a 3 year period Crockett NWA was bigger than Tennessee VOLS football! I know that's a bold statement but it's true! Then during the Monday Night Wars me and alot of my friends had just graduated and we would get together every Monday Night for parties and we were all WCW fans and were bigger marks then than we were as kids, I still miss those times! I did watch WWE through the attitude era but I haven't followed wrestling since the early 2000's.
Hey bro I’m a WCW kid too!!!!!! 4life , I’m a little younger so I started watching around 94 but wcw was definitely the better federation, full of workers Alex Wright Sting, dean, juvi, Rey Ddp scott hall Kevin Nash I could keep listing but Jesus it would go on forever
@@foxholiday4308 Thats awesome. Idk what it is, but Ive always felt like the wrestlers from the NWA/WCW were tougher, somehow lol. Like it was more 'real', I mean you had a lot of ppl who went back and forth often, but to me it seemed the guys like Flair, Funk, etc, were better than WWFs guys. When I was little, a big debate was who was tougher between the Road Warrriors (my personal favs) and Demolition, and most ppl I know said the Warriors. Demolition were obv a rip off team an seemed fabricated whereas the Warriors were the first of their kind..and spawned a lot of imitators. In a way, Warlord, Scott Hall, Ultimate Warrior or Sting would not have a career if not for them, bc they were hired as teams/members meant to duplicate the Warriors. As much as I love the Warriors, I think Animal suggested to the Powers of Pain that they go to NY bc they were bigger than the Warriors.
NWO 4-Life!
I had totally forgotten how much of a selling point seeing DDP hosting those Best of Nitro DVDs was back then; they were an instant purchase for me!
They totally picked the right guy.
I felt the 1st set was awesome,
though the 3rd disc was the worst of Nitro.
The 2nd set was eh, the 3rd was good.
As a WCW fan basically since Ted Turner brought it I hate when WWE try to bury WCW on their DVD’s. They even got some fans doing it. Yeah 2000 was a bad year BUT WCW had a GREAT roster. WWE doesn’t want u to know that just was booked like shit. 2001 WCW started getting good again but WWE doesn’t want u to know that.
When they finally gave Scott Steiner the Belt it started to get good again
I miss WCW. Now more than ever.
A man with integrity and values, very respectable man. Real example of looks matches persona
DDP was red hot in 97 and 98. I always admired that he never joined any nWo faction. Sting should have been the same. It didn't seem right him being in the nWo Wolfpac.
Sting and Luger never should have joined
I'll never get over Sting looking like a tomato with that awful red face paint.
@@popeyedoyle6360 yeah they should have been team wcw till the end.
@@palaceofwisdom9448 I agree
The Jersey Triad
Dallas really was HUGE through all '97-'98 and the first half of '99.
I remember watching him at 2am on ITV, on Florida Championship Wrestling, working as a co-commentator with Gordon Solie in the late 80's. He stood out as someone special even back then.
I missed those other promotions and only started watching the "Superstars of Wrestling" broadcasts early hours of ITV when they were NWA/WCW. I remember DDP debuting for the Freebirds against Doom with Lance Russell on commentary.
How WWE treated WCW fans, talent, and Randy Savage essentially being erased from the history books for an entire decade made me resent them for the rest of my life. I’ve never sat down to watch an episode of modern wrestling in 20 years. Who knows how many fans they lost, because it stopped being about business and Vince’s ego had to have the last say
I stopped after the WCW invasion.
I missed DDP winning a title, but I wasn't really interested in the company and storyline.
If WCW would've put DDP over Goldberg at Halloween Havoc back in the day, all of this might look very different.
In all honesty, Goldberg losing at all was part of WCW's downfall.
The best would have been to keep going with Goldberg undefeated. The next best thing was to have him win it back on Nitro.
But even after the fingerpoke of doom, they could have recovered. Instead what they did was go back to old wrestlers like Hogan & Flair.
Other than DDP winning the title, 1999 was WCW going boring and letting the old guys reign, instead of the new blood Goldberg represented.
Page could have lost to Raven,
him to Saturn,
him to Sting perhaps,
then back to Goldberg.
And yeah...
things would be different.
4:41 "Since that...Mooooment." ✌🏼😁
So true history is always written by the victors..... ALWAYS
The feud with undertaker was bad on everybody's part to the wife burial of him plus taker personal hatred DDP didn't deserve that
Agreed. It started well with DDP as the "stalker" because he wanted to be a WWE star. The promo he cut was gold. He went from defeating Goldberg in WCW to win the HW title to getting pinned by Sara. What a missed opportunity. I wondered if Taker ever went to bat for him and tried to get more mileage out of this.
@@marcleon1513 he never did went up to bat for DDP during his time there
@@brandensimmons653 That’s totally surprising coming from Taker because this could’ve been money for everyone.
@@marcleon1513 I think like DDP says, whoever was getting that feud with Taker was gonna get buried.......DDP was the biggest star they had from WcW and they buried the hell out of him coming in
@@marcleon1513 He never beat Goldberg in WCW.
Not sure if it's plastic surgery, or botox, or what, but Dallas looks better in these videos than he has in years. Maybe the hat and beard are helping too, but he looks younger.
I am loving the interviews with DDP. I wish he would have been a commentator, he would have been good.
Not good, *GOLD. Dude has that "it" factor. They should ask him again.
@@spi6455 I would be down with that.
I liked WCW way more than WWE . I like AEW way more than WWE now. Only 80s WWF for me. Which was my all-time fav.
It's startling to think that every top WCW superstar who went to WWF after the purchase got buried at some point until they weren't in the main event status even after a big push.
Booker dropped the title to Rock and feuded with Austin, then he dwelled in the mid card, and eventually earned his keep.
DDP got buried by Sara and then squashed by Big Show.
Goldberg got buried after his big push and title run.
Steiner got buried after the triple H feud.
NWO returned and only feuded with Rock and Austin to re-establish Hogan, then Nash and Hall were buried and feuding with Booker and Goldust.
Sting came back and he was buried at 'Mania.
Bischoff got it the worst out of all of them.
Ric Flair is the only guy I can think of who was in Vince's good books. Maybe Rey and Kidman as well.
Well if anything, at least Bishof deserved it. 😅
I favored WWF but Goldberg was my favorite wrestler. I Miss flipping the channels back and forth. My family had 2 tv's 1 had WWF the other had WCW. I remember my family was having a family get together the night Goldberg won the WCW title for the first time me, my dad, my brothers, and cousins were all watching it was bananas.
WWE dropped the damn ball and left a lot of money on the table just to rub the win in…..probably a small part of why some fans haven’t come back.
DDP does a great Michael P.S. Hayes impression!
Well the guys that Herd and Bischoff got rid of in WCW are going to hold some kind of grudge especially guys like Triple H who's 2003 title run was at the expense of WCW wrestlers
Most unfortunate for DDP that the phenomenon known as Goldberg came in and got as hot as anything had ever been in the business. If Goldberg hadn't come in and taken off like he did, I think DDP probably wins the title as a face somewhere in mid 98
Totally true!
In 1998 he was the hottest star in WCW.
Basically their version or value of Stone Cold.
As much as I detest Kevin Trash, at least he booked DDP for some titles in 1999
Never understood why Hayes and Garvin needed a manager. Two of the best on the stick
DDP could have extended his career another 10 year had Vince understood what he acquired.
In all actuality, WWF pushed Page faster than WCW. Both companies sucked in how they treated wrestlers (& fans).
DDP should got belt in 97 , but they wait until 99. He should went over Goldberge at Halloween Havco 98 , but they got scared to pull trigger. So, DDP got screwed twice to win the big one. Not a DDP fan , but he was over in mid 90's.
I agree.
He was more popular in 1998 than Goldberg.
I droped a guy at footballpractice when i was a kid with the diamond cutter..had to sit out 3 games..so worth it.lol
If he deserved it, good on you
DDP doesn't want to say anything bad about Vince McMahon because he doesn't want to be taking off the Hall of Fame DDP Knowles Vince McMahon did destroy his career, I used to be a fan of DDP but when I saw DDP loose to Sarah I was no longer a fan, DDP is not thinking about the fans that moved away from him because of the way he got treated they all started looking at him as a jobber🙊🙊🙊
I personally think what killed wcw was the same story lines like every body joining nwo or getting buried by them not wwe
WCW didn't evolve.
For a brief time, they pushed a new guy named Goldberg, then went back to old wrestlers (Flair, Hogan, etc). Which basically alienated half their audience.
WWF knew how to pass the torch...
even if the storyline didn't make sense.
Someone should ask Page about the secret benefactor angle in 94 that went nowhere, I always wondered what the plan was, if any.
I disagree on the sting part. I think he would have been the only wrestler probably to survive that storyline. Sting has a huge fan base.
I said 🖕 to WWF people who trashed WCW back then, and I would say it again.
DDP should've been debuted way better than he was. He should've had a program with The Rock. I see what's he's saying from an inside perspective and he's a very humble guy. But from the outside, that WWF run was disappointing to say the least. I was so confused with that whole story.
And the irony when you look at who DDP is/was married too.
If Ted Turner didn't sell WCW it would be a different ending.. That's what killed WCW
Ted Turner didn't sell WCW. The Time Warner-AOL merger resulted in him losing his power. The new head decided that he didn't want wrestling on Turner programming.
@@mrsilence666 Fucking moron he sold his shares he didn't control TNT anymore. Ted Turner was what kept WCW on TV
@@mrsilence666 Don't try too Correct me you little bitch
@@mrsilence666 Exactly WCW did not fail, it didn't die, it was murdered.
Turner would of never sold WCW to Vince. The people who sold it to Vince obviously hated wrestling and Turner cause they could of sold it to someone else for more money that could of eventually brought back WCW. I always preferred WWF over WCW but wrestling would be so,so much better now with some semblance of competition and WCW has history and some sort of name brand value
Vince bury wcw. I don't believe it. I mean look at what they did with Sting... oh wait
Diamond Dallas Page is a great professional wrestler. Stone Cold Steve Austin is one of the greatest of all time. They were never neck-and-neck not even close. For him to even say this if completely laughable
DDP is his own biggest fan
Heard so many of his interviews where he literally makes it sound like he the top of the top and belonged in the same conversation as Stone Cold or The Rock
I never seen anything special about him tbh,he could put on good matches sure
Believable?no
Look of a champion?no
Look of a wrestler?no
He has to remember he was in wcw at a time where guys like Norman Smiley were pretty much looked at as a main eventer
And also ANYONE at the time beating up the NWO would be over as hell
@@poopsyko I thought Diamond Dallas Page had decent size and okay microphone skills. But his overall look was extremely dated come on he had a mullet and those hanging earrings screams 80's wrestling. His matches were okay I never remember a Pacific match that screams oh my God he's one of the best. And I always thought his catchphrase was extremely corny"feel the bang "🙄
🙄
@poopsyko ,
Cause DDP went out there without some lame gimmick, and was just himself. He got to the top, and was in the same league as Austin with crowds lit for him.
DDP is cool and a good dude, but it was Scott Hall who kept dubya c dubya afloat. he created the outsiders, NWO, woldpac, hollywood hogan, sting, etc. he forced wwf into their attitude era.
You can't put that on 1 man.
The new Jesse Ventura on commentary? Come on now. Let's be realistic. I've never heard DDP on commentary.
WWE and Vince McMahon ruined wrestling with rushing Brock Lesner in 02 and rushing the WCW guys out could of had great runs on smack down with DDP Raw with NWO and Steiner and sting and others and so many more could of stretched wcw vs wwe till 05 at least
I think a lot of ppl understimate how flippant McMahon can be, he takes very few things seriously or personally, and ppl who who may have said "I dont want him, the way he dogged our company.." thought he'd be the same way, but Vince cares about business an thats it.
I remember Jim Ross said on the MNW DVD “one guy got a break and that’s Goldberg”. 🙄 Ummmm what about DDP? Ummmm what about The Giant (Big show)? Billy Kidman? Chris Benoit? Eddie Guerrero? Eddie had all the titles BUT the World. Benoit only left because he was scared of Mike Graham. Mike was a legit tough guy.
Bro ddp got buried in wwe. He even lost a match to undertakers wife at the time🤣😂🤣
jericho, malenko, rey mysterio, konnan, steiner, booker t, lance strom etc etc
Well there it it;
the stupidest thing I read all day.
I'm sorry I like ddp but Austin had everyone on the wcw side buried he was untouchable
No history is not written by the winners. History is written by people far removed in time and space from the events with an ax to grind in their own time.
DDP was big but he wasn’t Austin big. Nobody was Austin big but Austin.
Austin was a WWF fade,
just like The Rock was,
like Hogan was,
like others are & were.
The sun doesn't revolve around creationz of Vince Mc-Woman.
He compare himself to Austin Lol
I love DDP but does he have dentures now?
Doesn't yoga fix that
If Steve Austin said that DDP was neck and neck with him for a time, he was being very, very kind and self-depreciating.
In 97 he was
I remember thinking the stunner was a rip off of the diamlnd cutter. DDP was OVER
I was never a DDP fan but in 97, he and Austin WERE neck and neck. Austin was still on the rise in '97. He didn't REALLY get white hot until around Royal Rumble' 98 after coming back from the Owendriver.
On the 'road to Wrestlemania' *in '98, nobody was coming close to Austin. He eclipsed everything and everybody.
Steve Austin is my all time favourite wrestler since I started watching in 1992. With that being said, DDP was crazy over in WCW. You either didn't watch, or just don't like him, but watch people's reactions. People loved Page.
Austin was still in that weird heelish mode in 1997 (with a strong fanbase), and DDP was already a huge fan favorite.
DDP was on fire and hot at that time but SCSA he was not.
🙄 mark
Yo who else hated raven just cuz he was ddps enemy lol
Um ... everyone 🤣
The delusion runs wild with this diamond cutter...
