When I write my books, the fact that most of my characters rn't straight won't be a super major plot point. I mean, there will be reactions, there will be discovering themselves, but it won't be the main plot of the story, nor a twist. I have much better twists than that to use.

Well, I would say it being a twist makes sense in some scenarios, specifically in Andi Mack when it is revealed that Cyrus has a thing for Jonah. It makes sense for it to be a twist because it takes place in a middle school -- the time when everyone is figuring all that out. It's a twist to us because it's a twist to them. I don't think that it should always be a twist, but sometimes it makes sense for it to be a twist.

But they still felt the need to change his character. 🤦‍♀️Saying this as an actual asexual person (not a unicorn), so I feel the frustration. What frustrates me the most about Aces and representation... is not Aces and how they're represented, but just the fact that, apparently, all stories have to have romance in them. Like, a main character isn't a "main character" without romance. I loved Avatar: The Last Airbender in almost every way, except for the forced romance between Aang and Katara. Aang was 12/13!!! I already posted this above, but I wanted to repost because it references my feelings on the scene you're mentioning and whether or not it counts as queerbaiting, and bare with me, I do have reasons why I think it might not be. Sorry for how long it is...But give it a try.
Regarding Supercorp, I have thoughts that come from a story/ character development point, that make my feelings on this muddled. Because I totally see the ship and the moments that feed into a dynamic that is more than platonic, but the story they were telling that season also gives legitimate reason for some of the behaviors seen; and if the writers had reasons for the choices they made outside of hinting at a relationship that would never happen, I don't know if that can be called queerbaiting. To me queerbaiting is putting in dialogue and scenes that hint at a romantic pairing that will never happen, specifically to draw a LGBT audience and I don't know that Supergirl did that for 3 reasons.
      1. The season arc ends with Lena accidentally helping the villain of the season build a device that will bring an alien invasion to earth. She doesn't ask any questions about this potentially dangerous device and throws herself into its construction because Rhea forms a bond with her, showing her positive emotional support that Lena had never really had before from an adult female role model. This entire sequence is predicated on the idea that Lena is emotionally starved for positive interactions with others, and shows that when she gets those positive relationships, she throws her self into them, sometimes inappropriately. So while giving a room full of flowers to someone who said nice things about you in an interview is really over the top and romantic, the show writers were at the time trying to establish the character traits I just mentioned above as well. Therefore, the act (and others like it) could also have just been the insecure overreaction of someone who had been desperate for that validation of their choices, and been key moments of Lena's development that would help establish her as a character who would make the choices she makes later in the season.
      2. People also point out how close they got so quickly, and they really did lets be honest, but things were happening behind camera that could have impacted the story choices made this season as well. The show had at the start of season 2 changed networks and filming location. In doing so they lost 3-4 members of their season 1 cast. Including mentor Cat Grant and friend/ colleague Lucy Lane. This season had to introduce new characters who filled those roles, further develop existing characters, alter aspects of season one which had not worked, and tell the seasons story, each of which needed screen time. But they also needed the dynamic that Cat and Lucy filled, the strong independent friend who Kara could talk to, but who didn't know her secret, quickly. Lena was that character, and they rushed the meeting and friendship forming to get to the storytelling point they wanted to be at and clear up screen time for other plot points they wanted to fit in, which made it seem like they had a whirlwind relationship that seemed more than friends, but I don't know that it was purposefully intended that way.
      3. The third main point I see is the fact that the characters in general do have a lot in common. They were both adopted at older ages, they both are defined in the media by older male family members, they both are powerful women who have been met with criticism, they both are trying to establish them selves personally and professionally, and they are both single. All of this does form a strong foundation for a relationship and they show does play into that. The thing is that can also be true for a friendship. We are also friends with people who we share commonalities with and having those things in common alone isn't enough to say the writers were trying to hint at a romantic relationship. This point only stands its ground when added to others. When you say "Lena and Kara got close so quickly, and Lena kept doing these big romantic gestures for Kara, and they have so much in common" it all adds up to an audience being baited by writers. But if they were close because of production needs, and the gestures where necessary points of Lena's character, then the only purposeful writing choice that you have that hints at the writers trying to bait the audience for ratings sake is the fact that they have things in common... and I just don't know that that's enough.

Which, better than Sherlock and Supernatural to be fair, they just kept doing it and then laughing at their audience WITHIN THE SHOW for thinking they were serious. But still. Stiles being bi was definitely queerbaited, and having a few side characters hanging around doesn't change that.

i actually wouldn't mind the 'star trek' and 'beauty & beast' clips as just little easter eggs, but like you said, the problem is doing a big rollout patting themselves on the back for the "representation".. if they'd said nothing and just let audiences catch it on their own then it might have actually been kind of fun, but making a big announcement manages to somehow capture the worst of both worlds: conservative parents stay away while lgbtq+ audiences just feel frustrated/annoyed..

I was talking to some straight friends (not particularly LGBT literate) about queerbating. They thought that I was advocating for shoehorning gays into every single bit of media from now on. They'd clearly never heard of queerbating. A half-hour long argument with me advocating for actually explicitly (not in the NSFW way) gay characters in media, and them thinking I'm militant for wanting queer representation in all shows, movies, and books.
In retrospect, I'm wonder why we can't make shoehorning gay relationships a thing? We do it for straight people all the time!
Side note: do you know how freaking tired I am of shoehorning straight relationships where they don't belong? The hunger games series would have been better without the straight romance. So would divergent, and the selection- actually, there was no saving the selection... *Thinks about the Trainwreck that is the selection series... Snaps out of it*
Anyway, but pretty much every teen adventure novel has an arbitrary straight relationship in it. Why can't everything else be like that? If nothing else, it would give us a little more variety, and we might get some accidentally great representation!

I completely agree with you on everything, but I would argue that the romance subplot in the Hunger Games is relevant- it’s there to illustrate how the Capital focuses on stupid petty nonsense instead of the atrocities they commit, and Katniss actively gets annoyed at having to play it up for appearances sake when she doesn’t really care that much. Though that is much better illustrated in the books than the films.

He saw those scenes knew it was queerbaiting and never notice thought they should stop or just make the character gay. The last season had so much queerbaiting between 2 guys who "hate" yet you barely saw one without the other.

The Pitch Perfect franchise had the worst queerbait. Beca (played by Anna Kendrick), goes to college, meets some guy she's OBVIOUSLY going to end up falling in love with by the end of the movie, yadda yadda. That is until you meet Chloe (played by Brittany Snow) that makes you question if those two will have a potentional relationship. Also, an honorable mention is the fact that they DID have a lesbian character, but only used her for punchlines throughout the entire movie. Once this first film was made, "Bechloe" became this huge thing and most Pitch Perfect fans saw the chemistry, too... (including me). So of course, the writers took advantage of that and wrote up some even more questionable scenes in the next film. While competing in their A Capella world, they meet a German group called "DSM", and they toy with that. Beca became flustered by the main girl on their rival team, and said "just because you're making me very sexually confused does not mean you're intimidating". Yeah. This goes on for the rest of the film, but of course not with two more queerbaity bechloe scene! During a trip to try and find themselves again, the group learns they will have to share a tent together (keep in mind, there's 10+ girls). Beca and Chloe are upside down from another; meaning that Chloe's eyes were to Beca's forehead, vice versa. Beca, being the grumpy character she's supposed to be, begins to complain about having to be crammed in with everyone - that resulted in Chloe asking her if she needed a back rub as she pushed a loose strand of hair out of Beca's face. But wait, it gets better! They have the NERVE to make Chloe tell Beca: "You know, one of my biggest regrets is that I didn't do enough experimenting in college," while staring Beca dead in the eyes. To make matters worse, one of the directors (Elizabeth Banks) even said that the scene was based off of the Spider-Man and Mary Jane kiss scene. Of course, though, nothing happens by the end of that film. The other scene, they actually acknowledged bechloe. Beca and Chloe got into a fight - I'll save some time and spare the details - and Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) steps in, mentioning HER ship name for them. "Bloe". Needs some work, but I like her mindset. And now, we finish it off with the most queerbaited movie of the franchise: Pitch Perfect 3. Almost every single promotion for it was bechloe related. Brittany Snow posted a picture on Instagram of her dyed red hair, captioning it: "I hope Beca likes my hair", meanwhile Kendrick responded with something very similar. Then in the trailer, they made sure to add the clip of Chloe feeling up Beca (pushing up on her boobs) - out of all the scenes! And the worst one out of them all: they shot a video of Brittany and Anna walking towards each other, and then acting like they were about to kiss... but right before they actually did, they pull away and gave promotion for pre-ordered tickets. Throughout the entire movie, they were trying to push a new guy love interest onto Beca, but Anna Kendrick refused because she knew her fans wanted bechloe - and so did she. Chloe ended up with some guy, and they wrote in specifically that after they all performed on stage, Beca goes looking for Chloe and sees the two (Chloe and the dude) kissing, looking dejected. Rebel Wilson, Chrissie Fit and Shelley Regner all confirmed that Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow actually filmed a kiss scene, and it was supposed to be when Chloe kisses the guy, but Universal cut it and didn't even put it on DVD, let alone allow anyone to release it. It was also rumored (not entirely sure) that Beca and Chloe were originally supposed to be the main couple - not sure if that was in the novel or not - but Universal was afraid they wouldn't get a big enough audience so they decided to write in some cheesy, cliché boyfriend for Beca. In conclusion, FUCK UNIVERSAL!

We only gave eachother a decent "Happy to see you again" kiss" And that is so sad! That the actors and writers put so much effort into the relationship to honor George Takei. And they filmed that scene in Dubai and no actor there wanted to play a gay charcter so the director jumped in and played the husband of Hikaru. See, I'm Ace as well, and I like Betty and Jughead as a couple. (they've always been my favourite characters in the Archie comics - individually, not as a couple) Their relationship in the show is really sweet and they could've made Jughead ace AND paired them up if they have a scene where perhaps Betty wants to take it further but then they have a conversation where he admits into her but not sexually, comes out as ace and yet they still make their relationship work. It can show that you can be Ace and still be in a healthy relationship, that love isn't just about sex, and could break some of the stigma surrounding asexuality. Besides, Archie and Veronica have enough sex to please the network anyway.

It’s scenes like the one they watched that basically confirm he’s not. The idea that there needs to be confirmation or a coming out scene for a character to be “real representation” is very toxic to me. It pushes an agenda on other closeted kids that your sexuality needs to be a bigger thing than what it really is. To some people, it’s just a part of who they are, and it’s not something that needs to be said in such a formal way. To some people, it is something that needs to be said in such a formal way. Everyone is different, and stiles is just one of those people who doesn’t think it’s a big deal. After the end of the show, people just assumed he was straight because of his feelings for Lydia and that he was queerbait. When really, the toxicity is assuming his sexuality based on the feelings being presented and communicated. Sorry I went on a little rant, and got a little off topic but, bottom line is that stiles radiates big bi energy and there doesn’t need to be confirmation to see that.

I think the writers always intended for Stiles' sexuality to be left unknown, or at least wanted him to be curious. I personally have no problems with that, considering that the writers always mentioned they wanted to have a diversity of characters and wanted to be inclusive.

It's weird to see Rizzoli&Isles but not House M.D., which in a way was the pioneer for this. The main friendship between House and Wilson was a huge factor of their popolarity and they had so much articles about their bromance, but behind the scene there was a lot of talk about Wilson actually being a possible love interest, especially in the early seasons (Hugh Laurie in particular really liked the idea). They even run off together in the final.

The queerbaiting when it comes to wlw in Skam is so annoying, especially considering it has good mlm rep, so we know they could do it and with Eskild and now Filippo's speeches they have done their research about what it means to be gay. And then Isak being gay was hinted at for two seasons and in the end that's what he turned out to be while Vilde and Eva were kissing for the same period of time and never ended up together. So disappointing. I still like Skam but I really hope one or more of the remakes give us a gay Vilde or a bisexual Noora or some wlw rep that isn't queerbaiting. Druck has confirmed the Noora character to be bi but it doesn't seem like there will be a second season, so we won't get to see more than her kissing the Eva character to get rid of a boy and that's not enough.

I don’t think their criticism is of the character’s expression. It’s of the marketing team hyping her up as an LGBT character and patting themselves on the back for their “efforts” when the most they did was show uncertainty that could possibly be interpreted as being closeted.
(There’s nothing wrong with representing closeted people, but it becomes queerbating when there is no solid evidence that the person was lgbt in the first place. And no, I don’t believe directors/producers saying “they’re lgbt just trust us” should count. Show us in the medium itself)

I wouldn't say that is the only gay scene in Beauty and the Beast at all. Throughout the movie, I thought it was made really clear through the camera work and the acting that Lefou was queer. Even though the final scene everyone was talking about, and the one you reacted to, was pretty short and not very explicit, it was designed that was so that it could be released in countries where homosexuality is not socially acceptable and/or criminalised. Because of how the film, in my opinion, builds up to that moment, I don't think it is as unnoticeable as you guys said.
Also, I feel like it can't be considered queer-baiting in the same sense as the other films/shows you reacted to, especially since the film-maker himself tried to keep the hype down. In the actual interview of which snippets went viral, the film-maker, a gay man, explicitly stated that the exclusively gay moment was not going to be a huge ground-breaking scene and was just meant as a first step for LGBT+ representation in Disney. He literally said it'd be about 5 seconds. Though media coverage, with some isolated quotes from the article, gave the movie publicity, Disney itself didn't seem to be trying to use it to draw queer audiences in.

I honestly didn’t even read/hear about Beauty and the Beast having an openly gay character beforehand but I still saw him as that from the beginning on! But it’s still Disney we’re talking about, so I’d say it’s a step in the right direction.

I love riverdale- I literally have Cheryl Blossom tattooed on me. But their level of queer baiting is genuinely insane. In the newest promo, we see Joaquin and Archie kiss and there's just no way that they're ever going to actually be together. They're not going to make any of the core four anything but straight, because that would mean that they had to give screen time to the lgbt characters of the show.
Toni had screen time when she was with Jughead, Cheryl had screen time when she was with Archie, she had screen time when she was hinted to be with her own goddamn brother, but when she's with a woman there's just... nothing. Their road trip- which probably contained most of the important milestones in their relationship- is something we'll probably never get to see.
Kevin basically isn't even a real character at this point. In the first ep of s3 he was basically just someone to run around and tell everyone what was happening, he didn't get a plot of his own at all. He was just used as the lazy way out.
