    This man was 100% fighting for his death not life. It was cruel to force him to live in that situation. There is nothing wrong with dying. People are so scared of it like you failed at living if you die. Of course it's sad for those you leave behind but for him dying is a mercy and a blessing.

    • @JariJuslin

      In the case of people are so badly wounded no one is allowed to even visit them, there is no cruelty in ending the life if they so wish.
      It's not like anyone's gonna notice it anyway.
      And these people existed for real. Some WW1 victims were so disfigured they were locked into remote corners of a hospital and their family was told they died. Because they thought it was better than letting family see the mutilated but living body.
      That's a horrible way to spend rest of your life.

      We understand putting a suffering animal down is the moral right thing to do. But we see a human in the exact same situation and for some reason, the light-bulb just NEVER GOES OFF. It's scary how little people can draw the parallel.

    He didn't die. The nurse tried to mercy kill him but she was stopped by the Officer. He will stay as he is, trapped in a body that cannot move, see, hear, and be ignored and forgotten because his existence is too painful for others to bear in a world that sends young men like him off to die or worse in wars.

    You completely miss the point, He doesn't fight to live, on the contrary, he prays to die, which is clearly understood from the lyrics of the song and from the video.

    The movie was based on the book Johnny Got His Gun about WW1. It was one of three books banned from the troops during WW2. The author was persecuted for writing the story. The nurse knew that the soldier wanted to die tried to kill him but was stopped. He was asking God and the authorities to let him go. They should have granted his request but kept him alive as an example of their medical skill and for religious reasons.

  • @jamesmoore9640

    I always took the ending as the nurse that was trying to give him peace, being stopped and he is left to suffer alone in darkness for no telling how long. He is begging for death as there is nothing left in this life but pain. The last scene is staff celebrating, while he lays alone in hell, in the next room.
    Metaphorically I have always taken this song to be about depression and isolation, the fear that nothing you say or do will matter and no one will ever be listening.

      @skr I saw your response and wanted to add something. I have habit, I'm told, to see and express the dark side of situations. I wanted to add a lighter thought. James Hetfield recorded this in 1988 that's 34 years ago and in that time has played before tens of millions of paying fans. The man singing about never being heard, is one of the most listened to artists in human history.

      @ James moore I have always interpreted it that the nurse was trying to help him and the guy stopped her so "Johnny" was teased with having his pain and suffering come to an end only for it to not be true and as he lies there with his words getting slower and more slurred was him accepting his situation and descending into despair, depression, and insanity all within himself. And on the other side of the wall a celebration that further adds to his torment and torture.
      I have seen quite a few reactions to this song and all of them assumed that he died in the ened which makes it a very moving and emotional experience but the way I interpret it is exponentially so much worse to the point of not being able to think of anything worse that could happen to someone. Then to all of a sudden get that glorious feeling of hope and then just as quickly have it ripped away then to have the celebration or party right there as a kicker to the torment.
      I don't know I could be way wrong but that is the sense that penetrates my soul while I see the video and feel the music intensity building and perfectly matching the events in the video.
      There are many songs that I can feel and they touch my emotions but no other song has ever gripped my soul and evoked as much emotion and empathy from a place I never even knew existed inside me.
      That is why Metallica is the greatest band that has ever existed and will always be just that in my opinion

    The basic story is a young soldier in World War One steps on a landmine (per song lyrics) and loses his sight, hearing, speech, both arms, both legs, is being kept alive by machines and feels nothing but pain. He cannot tell between being awake and dreaming and wishes for death. Using Morse code, he asks for help (S.O.S.) and for them to kill him.

    • @swabia1554
      @swabia1554 2 роки тому +1

      the question of morale here is should someone like this soldier be kept alive because it is possible? Or should this persons torture be stopped so the pain is over which means he dies? Talking landmines: in Ukraine a woman just married AFTER she stepped on such a mine and lost both legs ! There we have the scenario kind of again 30 years later!

    • @christianmpassi3450

      And the original story is from a novel written by Dalton Trumbo. The title is "Johnny got his gun". English is not my first language but when I first read that book I was almost in tears throughout the reading. And then a few years later I discovered that the heavy metal band Metallica did a song about it. The video truly reflects the book.

    Although I thought for years that he was granted a merciful death by his nurse I later saw footage from the movie that clarifies that when the General came in and caught the nurse they were able to take action and "save" his life. So, while I thought for decades that he was allowed to escape his misery thanks to his merciful nurse he was, in fact, not allowed to die. Therefore his suffering continued. I know you said, at the end of your video, that you want him to live, but death is certainly the kinder option.

  • @ididthisonpulpous6526
    @ididthisonpulpous6526 2 роки тому +2

    The question the novel and film the song is based on is "What is life?" If your arms, legs, eyes, ears, and ability to speak are all gone what are you? You can't really communicate with anyone even understand them if you could. You can't tell the difference between waking and sleep. You just a mind trapped in body. I don't think the person "living" that life would want to live the only people served are those around him might feel they are "saving" him, but they aren't. If you have ever had a loved one very sick or very late in life you can see the lesser version of this where being alive is a burden and continuance of pain.

I would even add while I don't have conditions like his, type 1 diabetes, deaf in one ear, and hearing loss in the other, can hear but need hearing aid, and also in a way isn't true life, since especially with hearing have difficulty at times with speaking to ppl think noisy situations and that sort of thing.. Was born in both ears with hearing loss. So yea I'm very empathetic to that man's want of death.
