Great reaction. It’s about a soldier who was hit with a land mine and lost his legs, arms, his ability to feel, talk, hear, smell, and feel. He doesn’t know if he’s awake or asleep. They are debating whether or not to keep him alive. Based on a book, and the video has clips from two different movies. One of the greatest videos ever made.
The part where he cries for his mama always gets me. Some good lines: “Death has a dignity of it’s own.” Also, when his dad tells him every man has to face death alone. My favorite is between the priest and general.
11:09 The General: Don’t you have some message for him, Padre? The Priest: He’s a product of your profession, not mine. 🤯☠️ That is rough! That’s a deep line. Be safe. ❤ y’all.

I agree with pretty much everything you say…
But, the cut up clips make it hard to tell, but it is one of the doctors who asks the military clergyman “padre” for the message.
The military clergyman is saying that this person living in torture is a product of MEDICINE AND SCIENCE, not specifically War (which would have sent him off to afterlife if not for the docs “experiments”)

*Some Metallica facts for ya: One being that they've been together for 42 years this October, are still touring, and still putting out albums. Two of the original members are still there (James, singer and Lars, drummer) Kirk Hammett has been with band for 40 of those 42 years, and Robert Trujillo (bassist) being the newest has been with Metallica for 20 years. Metallica is the first band ever to play on all 7 Continents, has won nine Grammys. has played with the San Francisco Symphony, played at San Quentin prison, and played the soundtrack for Mission Impossible 2 after Tom Cruise gave them a private screening of the movie, persuading them to do it. Elton John covered Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" while saying it was one of the best songs ever written and that Metallica was one of the greatest bands of all time. That kind of acknowledgement from someone like Elton John is one of the biggest compliments anyone could get. You can put on one song and be in full aggression mode, horns up, head bangin' and the next song you can rock your baby to sleep. Metallica is just the shit!* 🤘🤘🤘

Another Fun fact, James Hetfeld is a big Western Fan, which is the reason why Metallica always opens their live shows with "Ecstacy of Gold (by Ennio Morricone from the Movie The good, the bad and the Ugly)".
Also Metallica was heavily criticized by hardcore Fans, when this came because they thought they had "sold out" by making a Music Video (this was their first Music Video), this was back when MTV was huge.

Once you bought your ticket online, you were directed to a website where you could vote for the 18 (or however-many) songs you wanted in the set list. They then took all the results for each stop on the tour and honored the results. #1 pick on every stop was master of puppets, #2 pick on every stop was THIS song

  • @gvehar

The movie the clips come from is Johnny Got His Gun, as others have noted. It’s based on the classic book by Dalton Trumbo that everyone should read, even though it’s pretty grim. Trumbo wrote and directed the movie as well. He was blacklisted from Hollywood due to the McCarthy hearings (it’s a long story, look it up) and Trumbo was remarkable enough to have a movie of his life made recently. But the book is the point, and is a story everyone should read.

The Metallica video samples the movie Johnny Got His Gun. Joe Bonham (Bottoms), a young American soldier during World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being hit by an artillery shell. He has lost his eyes, ears, mouth, nose, and limbs, but remains conscious and able to reason, rendering him a prisoner in his own body. As he drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and his girlfriend Kareen (Kathy Fields). He also forms a bond of sorts with a young nurse (Diane Varsi) who senses his plight.

I saw Metallica in concert in 2000, the Summer Sanitarium Tour. The tour consisted of Metallica, Korn, Kid Rock, Powerman 5000, and System of a Down. Metallica played this song as their final encore.
They had left the stage (after two prior encores). The lights hadn't come up yet. I knew we hadn't heard this song, and I was hoping they would close out with it. Suddenly, you started hearing distant machine gun fire. Then the sound (very realistic, I might say) of helicopters flying overhead. More machine gun fire. I already knew what was coming. Off to the side, some pyrotechnics went off in a simulated bomb blast and fireball. Then another one off to the other side. More machine gun fire and helicopter sounds. This went on for what felt like 10 minutes, just building in intensity, with more pyrotechnics going off.
All of a sudden, one single blue light shone down center stage. It was the only visible light, amidst the sounds of chaos. In the middle of that beam of light, James Hetfield was standing there, and started playing the opening notes to the song. The crowd erupted in a giant uproar of cheers and screams. They killed it. It was an awesome experience, and a hell of a way to end a phenomenal rock show.

Metallica has a couple of these songs with the same structure as One, starting slow and building up to a climax. Welcome Home Sanitarium, Fade to Black, The Day that Never Comes, some of their best work in my opinion.

Its exactly the video clip you are watching. What it depicts. The guy in the bed with the white drapes over him is the soldier injured from war, severely damaged, that is his voice trying to work it out in his head and communicate with the people he feels around him. The army boss, the head surgeon, his father, the nurse asked to look after him. He's also reliving old memories to see if he can find a way to communicate he is still alive and what he needs. They all think as he's been so badly damaged, they think he cant feel anything theyre doing to him and is severely brain damaged. But he's in there like a normal person, they just dont know it yet. This is back in the time where with ADD they treated with putting a hole in your head and poking metal rods into your brain with just sedation. Like you had severe brain damage and no physical feeling.

The movie clips come from the movie Johnny got his gun. The soldier had a bomb land next to him blew his arms, and legs off, made him blind and deaf and mute. And the military used him for experiments. The movie is based on the book Johnny got his gun about WW2 the book was banned but brought back in the 1960.

That Movie in that music video was chilling particularly that line "he's a product of your profession, not mine" that had to be the coldest line by a military leader

The clips are from a movie called "Johnny Got his Gun." There used to be a saying in the US, I think before WW2, "Johnny Get Your Gun". The full movie is on UA-cam. The lyrics tell the same story. Also, the soldier in the story LITERALLY lost both arms, both legs and his face.

Fade to black is my favorite Metallica song. Check it out. Anything off kill em all, ride the lightning, and master of puppets is fire. Garage days and and justice for all is really solid, too. They've made a lot since and justice for all but none as good as their early albums.

I started listening to them in the mid 80s and saw this concert in '89. Very moving song, but it really did represent a departure from their original sound. This was the last album I bought of theirs. It was great, but they were already different by this time.
