It seems like Cream, in hindsight but in contrast to the present tense, lasted as long as this song did. Like they were great for 15 minutes and then you never heard from them again. Except Eric, but as a group they just came and went, but set an explosion off in the meantime.
Summer of 68 was an incredible time for rock. FM stations were the only stations playing this music. AM radio was still playing silly love songs. Spoonful live was a dramatic departure. It was like tectonic plates breaking apart and a new continent of music came to life. The Beatles opened the door with Sgt Pepper in 67. Creams live performances took the genre to unchartered territory. If this sounds a little over the top, it is not. It is a lot over the top and that does not come close to describing what was happening. I have listened to this track on vinyl, 8 track cassette, CD, and now streamed on internet. My appreciation only grows over time. I don't have any idea how many times I have listened to it. Yet it remains one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard. I am now 71 years old. Every time I listen, I am transported to being 15 years old in Brooklyn, New York each time. It is also like hearing it a few thousand times for sure but it remains fresh. How is that possible?

Best guitar rock blues solo performance of all time. That singular performance that placed Eric Clapton at the pinnacle of the Pantheon of guitar gods. That performance has not been equaled by any other, and I dare say SRV and both Jimmy Page and Jimmy Hendrix

It's music that holds together even when it seems like it's going off in three different directions at once. I think the real genius of the band is Ginger Baker, who knows how to keep up with Jack Bruce even when Jack starts going "out". Clapton, meanwhile, just carves out a place for himself no matter what's happening musically. It's not always easy on the ears, but it'sworth it to try and come to grips with it.

Nobody played up to the standards set by these three when at their best. And I firmly believe that none of them ever did anything as worthy afterwards. More's the pity.
