Cataclean Test. Bad Catalytic Converter? Code P0420, P0421? Does It Work?

- My smog inspection is due on my Mitsubishi. I've been driving with a check engine light on for a few months now. P0420 and P0421 signs of a bad catalytic converter. Will Cataclean save the day and save me hundreds of dollars?
Instructions say to add it at 1/4 tank and then drive 10-15 miles and then fill your tank up. Also the lights generally are based off of x amount of key cycles without DTC being set. Doesn't just magically shut off if you fix the problem. Lots of false info here.
So just so everyone knows..
Cataclean does in fact work. However...
Cataclean is strictly for cleaning the o2 sensor and a dirty catalytic converter, Not a totally clogged converter or non working o2 sensor.
People get it confused it cant resurrect the dead...but it can help keep it alive if you use it at least 3 times a month.. it worked for me , my car runs great. But my converter wasnt clogged either. And yes it does clean the injectors really well. I will use this on every fill up....

It worked in my 2014 Infiniti QX80. I had the code for both cats. The replacement of which costs $4,600 in Texas. I put two bottles in a half tank and drove 40 miles then revved to 5k for 3 minutes. Cleared the code and it never came back.

I guess your catalytic converter is not damaged. It was probably just the clog up by carbon and maybe the O2 sensors are clog up with carbon as well. In this way, I believe the Cataclean works fine

After the cleaner is through and light is still on disconnect battery terminals and reconnect

It might also be an exhaust leak. My car (2013 Hyundai Veloster N/A) has 2 cats. 1st is on exhaust manifold, in the middle that connects both cat is a flex pipe and after that is the 2nd cat (duh). Anyway my flex pipe got a leak and its causing P0420 code on newly replaced cats (my old cat is worn out since it rattles). I hate flex pipe since it always breaks down relatively quick (tiny hole) and I've replaced it twice already. Another advice is to drive carefully on uneven roads (like under construction since I damaged my 1st replaced flex pipe that way and I failed to slow down on construction road (30km/15mi limit but I was going 60km/30mi).

My 2009 toyota corrolla catalytic converter check engine light come on i am going to try the cataclean hope it works
I have no engine light but the smoke smells sour, aweful smell and engine is somewhat strangulated,.... i will try these cataclean and hope it will clean and solve my problem

I will advise folks to use it every two to three months to keep the converter clean at all times.

It will damage your gasket, cataclean is a mixture of acetone, kerosene, xylene and isopropanol.

Cataclean kinda worked in my 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, check engine light came on p430 code so I put cataclean in my tank and drove til almost empty. Added new fuel til full and check engine light went off, after about 5 days check engine light came on, should i just keep useing cataclean every time i fuel up?
I wouldn't suggest to use too many additives so soon. There might be a sensor issue or one of the converter might be worn out. Might want to have it diagnosed

I drive a 07 Galant currently trying to pass inspection in NY. Recently used G2P(Guaranteed to Pass), but the light came back on at 55 miles, and 80 miles the second time. I'm bout to use Cataclean, hoping it can be a solution...

@John Leslie I reset the light. Also tried disconnecting the battery. After it continued to come on, I just bought a code reader and left it connected while driving. By the time it checked well for inspection, I fled to the mechanic. I believe the cat converter may just be overclogged where the G2P isn't effective enough...

Clear the code. Have the auto parts store clear it or disconnect the battery.
Cataclean worked for me, scanner says everythings good. It allowed my exhaust to basically "cough" up the clogged carbon

But I want to know if it works , engine light got turn off , can I go straight to smog or do I need to do some driving fro few days before smog ?
I used this before , so basically use this when you have 1/4 of gas left and how it worked for me was to drive really hard like accelerate like a mf on the highway, just don’t get in trouble with the police.
I drove 50 miles and it worked
My suv 2003 engine light same issue/almost empty gas tank put 1 in and drove on the freeway untill empty gas light on and fill up full with 91 /the 15 minutes later its off. Wolla./save me at least $1,500 and a headach. Hope you did not put a beand new cat before try this/iam so happy believe.

It did like a month later. I found out my valves seals were leaking causing oil to clog up the cat. I removed it and cleaned it with acetone after repairing the seal. Runs great.

After you did the miles before going to the smog center did you check you OBD ‘s IM ready if all drive cycles are ok , like the EGR?
No I just drove for a out 100 miles but wouldn't have been a bad idea to do so, thanks for watching
Did not work for me I put 25 off gas tank I had about 2/4 I didn’t want to put full tank but I reset The battery check engine light came off but came back on
So sorry to hear that did you drive it for like 100 miles so it can work through the system

Yes mine lasted about almost 2 months. I want to try removing the cats and cleaning them directly
I used 3 bottles and it worked for me for over a year and a half
@@michaelpast19 I think mine is more than a simple fix. My car is burning a lot of oil I think that my be the cause for the light

You I will try to put it on UA-cam Today I took it to scan it at AutoZone and they told me that was the O2 sensor Catholic so hopefully it does work because at first check engine light was on for EGR vacuum I replace it so on the scanner is says EGR complete O2 sensor

What's up X, thanks for watching. No it will not clear the code because the sensor will be registering too much air flow and throw a code. What state do you live in?
Check local laws. If it's not required, get rid of it and bypass the O2 sensor.
I just did this to my 08 bmw x5 3.0si on a 1/4 of a tank of gas, poured the bottle and drove about 20 miles . Then filled up on gas but before I filled up I reseted my CPU with my OBD scanner to get the CPU in order finger cross.

When did you put 91 gas or did u put 91 gas at all? My mechanic guy told me get catacleaner add it in at 1/4 tank then add 91 gas? Or when or don’t ?
I added it with less than 1/4 I believe and then filled up later. I always use 91. Because had to drive like 100miles before smog. Thanks for watching.

I'm not sure, had no idea they made noise. My check engine light is still off.
I think yours was just a little clogged but if left unclean the honeycomb parts burn up and break lose to rattle like mine lol I can't use it

Yes sir, it really does work and no it doesn't hurt the car or any sensors, but I dont think it is guaranteed to fix it. If your catalytic converter is bad, its bad. I think it is still worth a shot to try before you spend a ton of money on a new catalytic converter. Thanks for watching.

@@SleepRGarage I poured cataclean into a 1/4 tank of gasoline. I erased the code and see if the light would come back. Normally it comes back at 25 miles. 3 days after I put another bottle. It's been 700 miles and the light did not come back. I passed smog.
