      @RANDOMFIX I need some help.. 2009 aveo p0301 and p0420 code I have replaced cam sensors crankshaft sensor fuel pump relay because it stopped starting and started once it was replaced... coils and plugs and an oem downstream 02 sensor to clear all other codes I have except these 2 the p0420 came on after using some.system cleaners realized last week my intake hose had a huge slit on the bottom and replaced it still have p0420 and p0301. I am losing power misfiring and horrible fuel efficiency. I have been looking at live data on my chesp obd reader it doesn't have graphs but does have the data I just don't know what they should be... Anyway, after intake hose replaced p0420 went away for a cpl days but it's back and still same issues. Prior to intake hose CATTEMP1 was reading 3 to 500F now it's reading 1000 to all the way up to 1475 today is that OK? and what would u think the issue is ? Fuel trims seem to be bouncing around a lot and reader also showing open loop fault and open loop driver even with engine hot when I have my foot on the pedal it will go close loop most the time and then switches back to OL-Fault .. I am low on funds and have a 6 year old I raise alone please help this is our only transportation..I think I could try this but my front 02 is on my manifold.

    This worked 100% recommended. I did my 2005 v6 tacoma. I did not use the spray seafoam and just used the poured in version. I used a fluid siphon pump from harborfreight and pump it directly to the O2 sensor hole before the catalytic converter after removing the O2 air fuel ratio sensor. I installed back the sensor with anti-seize paste applied on the thread, then waited for about half an hour to soak the catalytic converter. After that, I started the truck and went to the freeway and smoke the crap out of the tail pipe. Came back and checked my live readings on my O2 sensor bank 2 on the idle and it read constant voltage and no more fluctuation and the pending code is gone. This is the best solution I saw so far that made sense and really worked.

    I would like to say to anyone who reads this I used sea foam to clean my catalytic converters I removed my 02 sensors from both cats and poured a can each into each catalytic converters and let it sit for a hour then put the 02 sensors back and started my truck and boy did it smoke for about 40min then to it for a drive to blow everything out and I got to tell you my performance came back and run a lot better. So for all then non believers out there I say nothing beats a fail but a try and everyone results will be different but it will be based on your method of cleaning. It may not work for everyone but letting the sea foam soak in the catalytic converters made a huge difference. Find your method.

    This is, by far, the BEST, most logical and informative video on caring for a possible faulty CAT or if one gets the dreaded 0420 code. For some insane reason, (love ya Scotty but you're wrong), dropping lacquer thinner into a gas tank when IT THEN GETS COMBUSTED WILL SERVE NO PURPOSE AFTER BEING EXHAUSTED INSIDE THE CYLINDERS AS ITS CHEMICAL STRUCTURE CHANGES...and thus does not bring the chemical cleaning properties of lacquer thinner. The method in this video introduces the wet chemical solvent direct before combustion and does the job. I have done this and it works! I would add...also put in a can of regular SeaFoam into fuel tank along with cleaning the MAF sensor. This 3 item cleaning combo eliminated my 0420 code on TWO vehicles!!!

    • @RANDOMFIX
      @RANDOMFIX  5 років тому +7

      Hi Victor, thank you awesome feedback, you are correct that bypassing the combustion chamber really increase the effectiveness of the chemicals working to clean the catalyst. Scotty Kilmer to me has been posting any rant he can. One day he says this and the next minute he is saying something else that contradicts his previous viseo. I often feel he is making video to get viewers to watch a guy sitting him his room ranting. His older videos we're a little more hands.i wish him the best of luck and there is even a simpler method that i just need to record. My promise is I post that video before the end of the year to help people just like yourself. Thank you again. _Randomfix

      @@RANDOMFIX In addition, TODAY... I was servicing another vehicle, 2013 Ford Fiesta with a 0420 code. All numbers from scan tool were pointing directly to the CAT failing, not O2 sensors, not MAF, etc. There were high short term fuel trims numbers but could not locate any vacuum leaks using propane. Again, this would point to failing CAT. Today, removed pre CAT O2 and did the SeaFoam spray injection method per your video and as I have done before. Used less than half can. Re-installed sensor and drove for 10 minutes. Boy, did I start a firestorm... White smoke for miles. Caltrans workers flagging me down. Finally, a neighbor came over to complain like I was a gross polluter. Took 20 minutes for smoke to burn off. Then, I erased all the ECU memory via scan tool and drove for 30 miles to reset all PIDs on the computer, driving while monitoring scan tool. WELL!!! All sensors on this car, (42), came back 'green light' meaning, all codes came back positive including the CAT codes and temps. This method works!!! Anyone pouring lacquer thinner into a gas tank has a screw loose in their head. Does not work. Soaking a cold catylytic converter using SeaFoam Spray Top Engine Cleaner/Lubricant then driving for 20 minutes is the way to get your CAT back online providing it has not completely failed for an extended period of time. This video is a great "how to". Save $1000. Use this method.

    I do it a little different. I jack up the rear end to put the car at a slight downhill angle. I take the 02 sensor out like you did. However, I squirt in about a cup full of Dawn detergent mixed in with water. I put back the 02 sensor and leave watwr and Dawn inside overnight. The next day I start the car and run it for 20 minutes, accelerating it from time to time. The Dawn abs water softens up what is clogging the cat and the exhaust pressure cleans out the cat. So far I have never had to replace the cat and my car has over 1/2 Million miles on it.

      @@greatdane145 When you get a code about a sensor, it's not telling you that the sensor is bad. It's telling you that the sensor is detecting an out of range measurement. Replacing an upstream sensor when it codes doesn't change the condition of the engine that led to that sensor telling you something is wrong. If you just change the sensor, it doesn't fix the problem. It just silences the code generation for a bit.

    I've done this, but used carb cleaner, not sea foam. It did seem to help. One suggestion would be to get an inspection camera (they are not too expensive for a cheaper one that connects to one's phone), to actually see inside that hole. Your upstream oxygen sensor female connector looks newer. These connectors are relatively inexpensive, and not that hard to fix, so if you have an older vehicle, it is excellent preventive maintenance to go ahead and replace those female connectors. Just make sure that the wires go in the new connector EXACTLY the same as the old connector. The old connectors can often be removed simply by crushing them until they fall apart -- just don't damage the wire when doing this. Do it over a towel and all the scraps are easy to clean up. I had a coolant sensor go out and screw up my idle to the point the engine would shut down when I took my foot off the gas to press the brake to stop when the engine was cold. It never would have happened if I (or a previous owner) had put in new connectors before 340,000 miles! :-)

    • @RANDOMFIX
      @RANDOMFIX  7 місяців тому +2

      @grega.6984 if the vehicle is running and the engine is on you no be able get anything into the up stream o2 se air hole as there will lots of pressure and heat. Some people spray into the intake with engine on past the mass air flow sensor to clean the carbon deposit. I haven’t don’t that and will be trying that as if I really want to clean it I would just take it apart and clean it.
      But I have had a Vw Jetta turbo that random misfire and I got some crc valve cleaner and Sprayed the whole bottle slowly as the vehicle ran and it took care my misfire and check engine light. But this depends on the vehicles, on that Vw I was really supposed to clean the intake with crushed walnut media and basically sand blast the intake once apart to get rid of all the carbon.
      I hope that helps, it all depends on the vehicle and what you are trying achieve? Just want to clean the catalyst? How does it take for your vehicle to detect the catalyst is not operating effectively?

The car will not start without taking off one of the O2 sensors to relieve back pressure now. My goal is to clean it enough without taking off the catalytic converter and drive it back home 3 hours to really fix it myself at home (maybe take it off and soak it in cleaner etc). It is a 2001 lexus rx300 with 2 catalytic covertors. What do you think on ideas to get it running enough to drive home 3 hours as initial goal? I have lacquer thinner, cataclean, borescope camera, sparkplug non foulers, pressure washer etc now fyi. I was hoping taking off the top 02 sensor would start and run the car and then I was going to clean spray lacquer thinner in the upstream hole on both and cataclean direct and run rpm for 15 to 30 min. Then dump gallon of lacquer thinner and cataclean in fuel tank too so it clean while driving home with the top 02 sensor removed? Thoughts and tips considering my issue here? :) Greg p.s. of course want to avoid damaging the pistons spraying down 02 sensor with thinner, cataclean, or seafom (no water based only petroleum) with engine off is safest?

I tried Cataclean couple of times and the light went off for about 50 miles and then came back on. The car seems to be running ok, but I think the gas milage is a little low. • @RANDOMFIX
      @RANDOMFIX  2 місяці тому

      The honest truth is that the only permanent fix is a new catalyst converter and it will work for some time before it goes out again.
      So I would try if you got over 200k mile on your xc60 but if you got little use on the vehicle then find out why the catalyst is going out so soon. Additionally, city trying kills the catalytic converter so take it on a long road high speed trip, check the fuel injector or at least clean then with a good detergent ua-cam.com/video/Edc0uPgeU8Y/v-deo.htmlsi=GKFj0o_ORGt7rH5y and check that air cleaner along mass air flow sensor cleaning and throttle body cleaning. These are all easy task and should cost you no more than $50 for all items or cleaners. You have confirmed the fuel economy is a little low so doing these has no downside and might help find the real reason for the catalyst converter premature failure.
      You could also have an improper seating exhaust value but that is rare.

      @yosico101 on a newer vehicle the o2 sensors are very sensitive and would of given you some sort of code but your p420 can also caused by an exhaust leak.

Replaced all fuel injectors, which resolved the misfire, but two days later the dreaded P0420 code appeared.

    • @RANDOMFIX

      Honestly since you injector was clogged I can imagine how this would lead to a p420 code unless it was spraying excessive fuel and it heated up the catalytic converters. I will reset and see what happens.
      If it pops back up I would spray down the upstream o2 sensor hole. Is your smog test due anytime soon? If not this is going to affect your grand Cherokee! I got the P0420 error on my used 2016 CRV in January end. I bought the vehicle last Dec 2022 from auto dealer in Wisconsin and drove all the way back to Minneapolis. The vehicle had clean Carfax which showed regular service changes done as per Honda recommended that I verified as well before buying. The vehicle has 124,000 miles on it. When I got the CEL I took to the local Honda dealer and he charged for check engine light and erased the code via ECM/PCM. The error came back again after 4 weeks and just when I thought of going back to the dealer the code/check engine light itself disappeared for a week but came back again a couple of days back. I took it to the dealer again today and he says technician checked o2 sensor and exhaust leak and they are not a problem. He has given me an estimate now for catalytic converter change and has quoted close to $1700! I do not have the budget now and would like to try this method or May be try any other liquid catalytic cleaner via gas intake. A local mechanic suggested to try erasing the code 3 times before taking any decision spending so much money. I have now erased the code 2 times. Hi RandomFix... I have a 2018 F150 with 2.7 Ecoboost and got a P430 code. I did this method and used up only half of the can of seafoam then drove it for over 50 miles. The check engine light did not come off. I also tapped on the Cat with a rubber mallet and did not hear any rattling sound. Should i go back and use the entire can?
    Update: So, I did this again two more times. And each time I sprayed the seafoam I would also soak it for an hour before driving on the freeway for about 50 miles then I wait for about a week to do the next treatment. Then before I went to emissions test, I dropped a bottle of the CRC guarantee pass and the code didn't show back up. Its been about a month now and everything seems to be okay. Also my mpg increased from 18 to 21.4!

  • @Budl1te
    @Budl1te 5 років тому +10

    Using a can of liquid vs spray may not get the sea foam evenly as you can use the plastic tube from the spray type to point the spray to the whole converter rather than just the part by the sensor hole. just my thoughts.

He will get it out if it seized you replacing it break the porcelain off, heated up and put a shallow six point socket of it and it’ll come right out. There’s seals in the connector joker. and on the tools use a happy inch drive because you’re going to need some leverage at 3/8 drive will not do it so you’ll have to get the reducer and use half-inch extensions three eights for flex all over the place you will not get it. well I can say I did this and it worked for me. I didn't drive 40-60 miles I just started and let it run until most of the seafoam burned off. I then drove it around my neighborhood for maybe at the most 10 minutes. During that time I would see the seafoam still burn off, like when stopped at a stop sign I would see a puff of white smoke and during take off. It then all cleared out. Also I did clear all my codes before I went for test drive.
