I think I know what your next few DIYs for the M3 might be after your recent purchase of the Cayman and your comments in this video.... Title: How to Make My M3 Feel Like A Cayman. Featuring DIYs for the Ultimate Clutch Pedal and the Auto Solutions Short Shift Kit.....

Great comparison - i share a lot of the same findings with my M3 compared to 911T. The Porsche is a superior car in every single way. The M3 is much faster (i have DCT) and i really love the styling inside and out. My 911 has RAS and T comes with Sport PASM (lowered susp) so it is just extremely planted in turns and high speeds. The 3.0 turbo flat6 is also much more NA in how it behaves compared to S55 and sounds much better. I test drove a 2016 Cayman S with Sport exhaust and the sound it makes is amazing, can't beat NA for that. The handling was on par with my 911 - again i think RAS is HUGE game changer for 911.
I’ve had RAS on a Turbo S, GT3 and now on a 4S and couldn’t agree more! Noticeably more balanced in fast turns and tight turning circle fun in narrow streets- only downside is the expensive (to replace) Li-ion battery 😳
Thanks for an insightful and honest comparison - I had a GT4 and an M2 Comp and had very similar experiences- the M2 had too much power for the chassis but on the track the manual GT4 struggled against the turbos on the straights. After a couple of 911s and a GT3 I ended up with a Carrera 4S with rear wheel steering. The 718 handling is superb but the 911 gives mores satisfaction dealing with that big rear counterweight and delivers on acceleration 😊
@@TommyLGarage its just another springs... i had stock suspension on M2C with front camber plate Milway and was better.. but i bought BMW KW V3 and steering response is much better and car doesnt to tilt... but of course, you can buy better suspension like KW competion or AST Suspension 5300...

I daily drive a Tesla Model 3 Performance. On the weekends I have a 997 911 S and a Dinan tuned E46 M3 manual with full suspension and HRE wheels. When I go mountain biking or off road I have a rock crawling Toyota 4Runner. Honestly, the car that I drive the most is the Tesla. It is the most stress free and has the best acceleration out of all the cars. It is not the most fun or engaging. The Tesla also has the best sound system. It even sounds better than my wife’s Lexus Mark Levinson system. I still enjoy the sound of the exhaust and manual shifting, but I think the EVs are going to be the future. My favorite sounding exhaust is the GT350 Mustang with its flat pane crank.
The sound of the Porsche is intoxicating. I would love if could you do a POV drive. After watching your video, the Cayman makes the M3 looks sloppy in terms of power delivery. Don’t get me wrong, I love when the tail steps out but sometimes I want it to stay planted and it’s pinging off the traction control or I’m having to roll into the throttle.
I think the solution for the M3, aside from putting the widest tires you can on the back, is setting up boost by gear in BM3. A 10-15% reduction would make 1st and 2nd more useable and a little less sudden.
Great comparison, TLG. I've also got one of each, tho my P-car is a 968, which is seriously down on HP compared to my TLG-mud-flap-equipped F80. One thing that greatly improved the clutch feel for me on the F80 was removing the clutch delay valve that's hiding inside the clutch slave cylinder. Engagement is much more direct, it's much easier to get off the line - especially in sport plus - and I may be just imagining it, but the clutch pedal feels a bit heavier too. Give it a go - I guarantee you won't regret it!
maybe twin disc clutch and short shifter upgrade for M3?... I had a UUC short shifter and DKM Stage 3 twin disc clutch on a OG M2 before my M3 and it was a whole world of difference.
I had a 2011 911 and sold it for my 16 M3. 911 is a amazing car, the sound is mesmerizing! Ultimately I have a family and the M3 fits perfectly in my life now. When it’s time to move on from the M3. Just came back from NJMP. Love my E90 M3. You need the V8. No turbo lag! Next step, is to take my 981 CS to the track and AutoX events. Maybe I’ll see you there,.
Honestly, I was pretty let down by the 911. For context, I have a 2018 M4C 6-speed, 1999 Miata, 2005 Mini, and a 2007 WRX. So when I went to drive a 2017 911 Carrera S, I had experienced plenty of different car configurations and types. I went in expecting it to be the next level somehow just based on all the great reviews and the positive impression I had of the Cayman. The 911 was sort of a dud. Admittedly, my expectations might’ve been too high but it felt slow compared to the M4 while driving around. I did t do any clutch-dump 0-60s since it was a dealer car but I wasn’t exactly kind to it either because COVID made it so I went on the test drive sans salesman. The drive made me appreciate the M4C much more. I was really taken aback. So long story short Tommy... test it and I think you’ll be surprised but not necessarily in a good way. Just my 2 cents. Great video. I think the 911 would be a great choice. I have a 911 and a crappy family SUV (Honda HRV). When my 2 kids are a little older and only need booster seats, I think I will try to use the 911 for everything.
Great video, man! Thank you! I've been trying to decide between a F80 M3, M2 or Audi RS5 B8.5... Can't decide. Would love your input (considering it's gonna be kept long-term and used as daily/source of excitement haha).
This is very good combo. I think it’s better than a solo 911. I am keeping my m2c as your m3, and getting a Ducati bike as your cayman. If I only get to have one single vehicle, the manual G80 m3 is my choice.
Well yeah with the cayman you have a dedicated Sports car platform and the m3 has to do a little of everything. If you want the best driving experience with a back seat its the evora 400
I have a f80 m3 comp dct and a manual GR Yaris, (I’m in the UK) and I feel like a 911, 991 or 992 variant would tick both boxes instead of having the two cars. I have kids so need back seats. The GR Yaris is on another level to the M3. It’s a faster car in 90% of situations and so much more fun to drive.
@@TommyLGarage I wanted a GT3 badly but for me it’s a bit to rough to semi daily. The GTS for me is the perfect car for what I want to do. Occasional track day weapon and still comfy!
I mean you’re on 255 winter tires with the M. I don’t think the driving impressions are apples to apples here with the Porsche. My winter tires on my F80 dramatically change the driving characteristics from when I have my summer Cup2s on.
That being the Cayman is an all around tighter car. After all the M3 is coming from a 3 series as a starting point. Still both cars are just awesome. Great video!
I'm just going to say it. Woody Allen does cars! This is not a derogatory slight. Woody Allen has done lots of movies which I love and you have a similar laconic delivery. My Cayman review travels have brought me to many interesting places.
I have an m4 competition DCT, and a C6 Z06 corvette obviously 6 speed. I have driven the m cars in the Manual and those gear boxes just are not good. I can see how your cayman is bringing that to light. My Z06 isn’t mid engine but handling compared to my M4…. It crushes it as you cayman does to your M3.
Most 911 cars are underpowered and slow so it depends. If a 991.2 or later or a turbo/gt3 from 997 onwards then go 911. Otherwise this 2 car setup is superior
I have a m340i with the b58 and I have a 981 Gt4. The b58 has more torque than the Gt4, but the handling and the way the gt4 revs is very special. I have a feeling the b58 motor would out-pull the gt4 from a rolling start, but numbers aren’t everything. There is just something special about the way the gt4 turns and handles in general. Truth be told I have a 93rx7 and it might handle the best. Albeit with less overall grip (vastly inferior tires compared to the cup2 on gt4) Keep up the great vids. Love your content.
If you are going to start talking about practicality, luggage space, roof racks and child seats, then the cayman is not part of this conversation and never should be thrusted into it. Clearly the M3 wins out in terms of daily driver use. The cayman will never be considered a daily driver for a family of four. Its a sports car from the start, made for speeding thru curvaceous country roads, not trips to little league baseball practice. I agree with the authors praise of the Cayman's advantages in terms of handling, and power delivery to the M3. Fast forward to the current 718 and you will find that what Porsche has done with a turbocharged 4 cylinder is nothing short of amazing. If you ever track a cayman you will find that the stability of the car under braking is totally sublime as you approach a turn. You don't get that feeling of control in a M3.
Good video but IMHO, comparing an M3 to a Cayman or Boxster is like comparing the 911 against the Z4 or M2. An M2 or a Z4 would've been a better comparison against the Cayman. With that said, I understand those are your vehicles (both beautiful BTW) and the comparison makes for an interesting one and explains quite well why you chose both. BTW I agree with you on the 911 choice.I previously owned a BMW then a Boxster and now a 911 so, I totally get where you're coming from.
That is Porsche engineering for you, there is nothing quite like it. You should try a newer 911 GTS, or obviously the GT3's, you won't be able to enjoy any other car after that lmao.
@@TommyLGarage I think you would love it, but there is isn't much that you could do to it, its kind of already perfect from factory, and I know how much you love your DIY stuff.
BMWs are so boring now. Started losing their way decades ago and have long jumped the shark. Power on an M3 is not usable in town. E30 M3 remains the most fun due to feedback, sound, and linear delivery to redline. Porsche tries harder to be true.
911 is always the answer! I have a 2011 E92 M3 zcp. I love the car and plan to keep it for ev... well, unless it needs to go to make room for a 911. Any GT 911 but choice is GT3 or at minimum GTS. 997 or 991, n/a no turbos.
I would keep the M3, and when you're feeling rich down the road, swap the Cayman for a GT4. If you're feeling rich rich, then a GT3. Either way, keep the M3.

the m3 is is a banger, but a 911 is just a separate class
True
Great video, man! Thank you! I've been trying to decide between a F80 M3, M2 or Audi RS5 B8.5... Can't decide. Would love your input (considering it's gonna be kept long-term and used as daily/source of excitement haha).
I say M3 if you want to keep it long term.
Rs5 is eeehhh
M2 is nice but unless you’re tracking it every weekend then M3 is superior
@@TommyLGarage alright, Tommy. Thanks a lot!
I would take the M3. The Audis are nice when new, but do not age as gracefully as the BMWs. I still look at my E46 M3 and love the design.
@@mocheen4837 E46 M3 is the best design by BMW, aging like fine wine.
This is very good combo. I think it’s better than a solo 911. I am keeping my m2c as your m3, and getting a Ducati bike as your cayman. If I only get to have one single vehicle, the manual G80 m3 is my choice.
Ducati is the best sounding out of the bunch !
I'll keep both, best of both worlds !🌎
Baaam done !
@@TommyLGarage lol 😆
Well yeah with the cayman you have a dedicated Sports car platform and the m3 has to do a little of everything. If you want the best driving experience with a back seat its the evora 400
My buddy just picked up the evora. Nice but I still prefer the Cayman
From personal observation, there is a sizable number of BMW drivers who eventually switch to a Porsche, but very few Porsche drivers switch to a BMW.
True...
I might need to downsize and get a 911 next year
Although they are both absolutely amazing machines I think that the 911 is the way to go. Just make sure you get the "right" 911! Great video Tommy!
Thanks! And yes I’d do a minimum of C4S although GT3 is the goal :)
Good point
That being the Cayman is an all around tighter car. After all the M3 is coming from a 3 series as a starting point. Still both cars are just awesome. Great video!
I'm just going to say it. Woody Allen does cars! This is not a derogatory slight. Woody Allen has done lots of movies which I love and you have a similar laconic delivery. My Cayman review travels have brought me to many interesting places.
Haha
That’s why I like N/A like the E46 or E9x 😊
Maybe I should add an E9X to the stable
@@TommyLGarage I have the E90 M3 for the same reason as you, to be able to take the kids 😁 and this beast will be with me forever 👍🏻
Porsche is the best by far
True !
This thumbnail just cured Covid
Haha
Both are great but I'd keep the M3 as a daily and fun and upgrade Cayman to 911 GT3!
Maybe that’s the plan!!
IT's amazing how much shifting can influence the driving experience.
I would buy a manual cayman S, but they’re so expensive
Greet cars though
@@TommyLGarage absolutely:)
Most 911 cars are underpowered and slow so it depends. If a 991.2 or later or a turbo/gt3 from 997 onwards then go 911. Otherwise this 2 car setup is superior
Very well said
I just went from an M4 to 911 991.2 Carrera T and the 911 is superior in every way. The only thing I don’t like is all the attention it gets.
HUH, I had a 2009 911 Turbo (non S) and I received very little to no attention.
Haha so true. My car is black so it blends it but still...
Thanks for the love! 981 gt4 is an amazing car
👍🏿👍🏿
aaiii!
Get the 997.2 c2s. TLG LLC tax write off. :)
Honestly that’s the one I looked for but couldn’t find a manual. I’ll do 991.2 GT3 next year that’s the plan
Having tracked both the M3 and Cayman I truly agree.
I actually kind of regret not getting a 911
You had me until 911
Ouch how so ?
That is Porsche engineering for you, there is nothing quite like it. You should try a newer 911 GTS, or obviously the GT3's, you won't be able to enjoy any other car after that lmao.
I might be getting a gts
@@TommyLGarage I think you would love it, but there is isn't much that you could do to it, its kind of already perfect from factory, and I know how much you love your DIY stuff.
I went from an 2018 f80 ZCP to a 991.2 and have about the same opinion. The M3 feels crude by comparison. It’s beautiful and fun but not as precise.
Couldn’t agree more!
BMWs are so boring now. Started losing their way decades ago and have long jumped the shark. Power on an M3 is not usable in town. E30 M3 remains the most fun due to feedback, sound, and linear delivery to redline. Porsche tries harder to be true.
F80 will go down as the best m3
911
All the way!
911 is always the answer! I have a 2011 E92 M3 zcp. I love the car and plan to keep it for ev... well, unless it needs to go to make room for a 911. Any GT 911 but choice is GT3 or at minimum GTS. 997 or 991, n/a no turbos.
I choose violence
Lol
I'd just get a 911
That’s the plan
I would keep the M3, and when you're feeling rich down the road, swap the Cayman for a GT4. If you're feeling rich rich, then a GT3. Either way, keep the M3.
I want to feel rich rich next year
@@TommyLGarage Inshallah.
Get a 911 for sure
Working on it :)
Was this a cry for help?....Full mid-life crisis.
They only reason to sell the mint pristine BMW E39 540i was to make space in the tr-garage for something new.
"A 911 is a perfect (family) car, since it has a back seat"....HaHa that is too funny. Especially when you drive home in a new/used 911 GT3.
Having a BMW E9X M3 and a daily driver PoS BMW F30 335i....the M3/M4 is a perfect daily driver, but you have to limit the yearly mileage to total only 50k-75k miles before you sell it. My M3 has 175k+ miles due to a long daily commute in SoCal, which was not smart. If you have a family then a SUV is the daily driver and you can get a weekend toy like an ///M car or Por-sche toy, while limiting yearly mileage to
But if my C4S has back seats, an exhaust and lowered suspension...it’s still a family car! :)
And we also have an suv which is not going away
People shouldn't split hairs especially when they are going slowly bald....I joke
Ahhh I see what you did there
Good car but ugly the Cayman
Subjective :)
👍🏿👍🏿
wohoo!
