Wider tires plus a mid engine means the Porsche has roughly similar grip to the awd golf. Plus the Germans always underestimate their hp. Good to see James win one finally!
I think the HP figures are from crankshaft in test conditions. Measuring it from wheels is always slightly different. I like how they always say the lowest average 0-60 time too. That way you can almost always beat the time. 😂 clever stuff
AWD still has more traction with 100% of the weight on driven wheels vs 56% on the cayman. Even with weight transfer, I don't think the cayman is anywhere near lifting the front wheels and having 100% on the rear...bigger contact patch does not translate into proportionally better friction coefficient, only reduces the tire load and improves grip marginally. I think Porsche launch control is just more efficient, cayman's lighter so better power/weight ratio and probably more power than the spec sheet says. maybe the golf R launch control doesn't do so good with the added power too...tunes Porsche's launch really well but that's not always the case with every car brand

I don't know why they would have changed that for the 718. But even with everything fully disabled, unless you've already got a drift going, the balance tends to shift to understeer on power. Just this past Monday I got to drive stick for the first time (and in a 4th gen WRX at that). I'm honestly surprised at how well I did, I only stalled once in 30 minutes of driving, even though we were just driving around an empty parking lot. My neighbor who owned the WRX and was teaching me was also impressed with how well I got on with it, and I'm looking forward to driving stick with him again.
@@krane15 400hp out of a 2.0 liter four was done more reliably by Mitsubishi over a decade ago and isn't uncommon in tuned cars now. Not that I'm knocking (engineering pun intended) 400hp from the VW at all, it's just not uncommon enough these days that I'd call it amazing, personally.
Having owned a tuned mk 7.5 Golf R myself, I was kind of shocked that it didn't take the stock Porsche Cayman GTS!! That car is obvioiusly amazing, and imagine what it could do with a little more work! Of course, one of the reasons I loved the Golf R was that it was a hatchback and was a bit of a sleeper. That tune essentially makes it an RS3 hatchback, which they stopped importing into the states when I bought mine... otherwise I would've owned a modded RS3!! Giddyup!
Driver error. It should have gaped the other two cars off the line. However, its weakness is in the mid-rage where it sadly, begins to fizzle out while the others keep on pulling.
My tcu is still locked. . Definitely would've beat the porsche otherwise eventhough it's 600lbs lighter. My car hasn't been on a dyno but is neck and neck with my buddies stage 1+ unitronic car also with no tcu so they just put the unitronic #'s down. Those are not whp figures. . Realistically my car probably only makes 400ish whp with no tcu so the tq is being limited.
@@jeremysmith7686 I guess this makes more sense. My 2019 Golf R was Stage 2+ and easily and consistently did 0-60 in 3.5 secs on the street (I had a tracker). It also never seemed to stop pulling at any speed, right up to 150+ when it would be aero limited. It also would do the quarter mile in 11.5 secs, and looking at the perf stats of the 2023 Caymen GTS, mine would have done it in handily. Thanks for sharing these details, because it makes more sense now. Also, my 2019 Golf R weighed 3,300 pounds, so only ~200 pounds more than the GTS.
@Tim Federwitz so my car currently when I ran it down that strip is trapping a speed of 118-119 mph which is also good enough for a mid 11 but the 60ft with the lack of tcu tune has only generated an 11.9 at 119.

On a side note, nice to see the Nissan Z back on the leaderboard. But why is the Z only 0.2 seconds quicker than the Acura TLX Type S, which is 700 lbs heavier and has 50 less hp?
.2 seconds quicker is very vague... In the 1/4 the Z is .7 seconds quicker. Even the old 370z is quicker than the type s in the 1/4 mile. You can thank the awd system in the type s for the extra 500 pounds... which also helps it hold its own with the Z to 60 mph and around a track. @@ESKATEUK because 1,000$ in ecu and tcu tuning gets you a hatch that runs like 11.4 @121 for less than 50k. How on earth do you think that’s not impressive for a 2.0? It’s also 446. Don’t need to round up (and down on the Porsche) to try and make your point seem better.
I still can't believe that M2 is 3900 lbs.!! Porker. As for the Cayman, you have to uncheck the PTV option and it won't cut the power through the bends.
For the group, yes I was referring to the Golf R. As all vehicles have grown, the R is almost the size of a crossover. Even still the M2 is 450lbs heavier.
The Gts is actually slightly quicker than the Gt4. I’m surprised people aren’t loving it as much because it’s not a “real gt car”. The gt4, gt3, gt2 get all the love. All of them are great.
If price is your only measure when buying a car, then yes, go with the Golf. If looks and sound are thrown in, the Golf doesn’t do it for me. But that’s just me.
I got my 718 Boxster GTS for a 40% discount off of the original msrp and it has a 5yr warranty for 80000 miles. It looks almost exactly like that one but has boost like the other two and a big sunroof that's not available on the Cayman, or either of the other cars. Best money I ever spent, other than the 1st Porsches I bought 25 years ago. I also love my trunk, instead of the hatch that I had on my 2006 Cayman S. Also my Cayman S had very few options, and my 718 GTS has over $20K in really excellent options, if the GTS option was good enough by itself. Even the paint is trick, it looks so good next to my iron blue Mk7.5 GTI that I find myself pinching my arm just to make sure that I not dreaming. Guess I'm living the dream, because I never wake up. So I'm gonna add a program to my dream that makes my 718 GTS have about 100 more hp, and see if I can grab some cup tires and better brake pads and we'll see if my 2.5 718 GTS dream beats my M2002 dream. BTW, that red thing in the video isn't my M2002 dream either. My M2002 still has yet to be made, however it will certainly have a hood in the front that one pushes forward from the A pillar and then pulls open over the kidney and hangs off the front of the car like my original 2002 did that I had when I was 16. My friend Sid will love riding on top of it too ;) Coachella Valley Rules!
So, two main takeaways for me from this video. 1. The new golf r is DAMN friggin quick. It is INSANE what volkswagen is capable of with a little 2.0t 4 cylinder. 2. A 2 liter turbo decimated a brand new m2 from a dig and kept up with a brand new cayman in a roll and a dig. NUTS.
Having driven the son's 420hp Golf R who now has an M3 Comp (450hp) I can say that there's either little white lies being told about the output on that Golf R or it's not performing as it should because in that line up it should have beat the Cayman off the line.
Porsche off the line are absolutely amazing. That cayman with 390bhp can hit 0-60 in 3.3 seconds and a quarter mile of 11.7 seconds. Just because the 420bhp golf R is fast doesn’t mean it’s quicker than all other cars, in this case, the cayman.
@@dbogdan17 Depends on the tune. I haven’t seen a single one make less than 400hp. Most off the shelf tunes are making 440-460 with no hardware changes

Love the new M2, even the styling, but that Golf is a weapon and I LOVE a hot hatch.
We need a rematch tuned M5Cs vs the E63s tuned and Rs6 tuned those previous one 1⃣ you raced with a stock m5cs
Great review men I get my 2023 M2 within the next 2 weeks. I can't wait for her to arrive. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🥶
Proving yet again that Porsche is magic.
It's 40k over bmw so nothing surprising.
Priving yet again that even on the same HP, the M2 is faster... The BMW destroyed the Porsche on the roll race. It's much faster and serious car.
@@RiasGremoryS54 an m2 ain’t faster hop off bmws dick mate
the fact the 50k less expensive vw with some bolt ons and a tune can even hold a candle to the 100k porsche is really impressive.
Its so impressive how fast the golf R is.
How is that impressive? It’s tuned up to 460bhp and got dropped by a 390bhp cayman. It’s nothing impressive.
@@ESKATEUKit’s a hatchback with 400hp that’s impressive imo.
@@ESKATEUK agreed. Honestly it’s pretty trash lol
@@ESKATEUK because 1,000$ in ecu and tcu tuning gets you a hatch that runs like 11.4 @121 for less than 50k. How on earth do you think that’s not impressive for a 2.0?
It’s also 446. Don’t need to round up (and down on the Porsche) to try and make your point seem better.
the stock one can be compared to the 1 series, not sure why people are surprised tbqh
Nice review keep up the good work fellas
How is the m2 so friggin heavy?
It's basically an M4 with a body kit. But this doesn't answer the question why the M4 is so heavy.
Appreciate the KG & LBS 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
The Porsche looks amazing by the way
And I’m James.. he says it with such tenacity 😂
I still can't believe that M2 is 3900 lbs.!! Porker. As for the Cayman, you have to uncheck the PTV option and it won't cut the power through the bends.
Where do you uncheck the PTV?
@@trigganometry168 when you spec the car. ;) I didn’t mean there was an “off switch” in the car. 😅
@@TML34. The GTS didn’t have the option to uncheck. Haha but yeah I think only the GT4’s you could disable TC fully.
So funny I was looking at Porsche GTS videos for a week straight and here I am on throttle house, love the video
I love that a 4 door almost crossover is 450lbs lighter than an M2, North America’s smallest “Ultimate Driving Machine” 2 door sports car.
north America???
what does bmw stand for you? Built Murica Ways?
You mean hatchback?
For the group, yes I was referring to the Golf R. As all vehicles have grown, the R is almost the size of a crossover. Even still the M2 is 450lbs heavier.
4:55 close your eyes and think "Kermit in a drag race"
The Cayman Gts 4.0 is the best car for sale next to a GT3 lol
Gt4 had entered the chat
@@sanzserif GT4 RS, Turbo, Carrera T, GT3RS, Sport Classic, Dakar, Spyder, Spyder RS, etc. have also entered chat.
The Gts is actually slightly quicker than the Gt4. I’m surprised people aren’t loving it as much because it’s not a “real gt car”.
The gt4, gt3, gt2 get all the love. All of them are great.
gotta be karstons own golf R he was taking that personal 🤣
See, just sticking a tune in it (Golf R) with a $4000 exhaust has it keeping up with cars double its price.
The DP (if it has one) is the only thing that would even add anything too. The 2k worth of the catback is only a noise mod.
In a straight line, yes.
@@AntFragale Very true. I own a Golf R, cat delete. Disco Potato turbo. I will say the cat delete makes the car a different animal.
If price is your only measure when buying a car, then yes, go with the Golf. If looks and sound are thrown in, the Golf doesn’t do it for me. But that’s just me.
But it's still a golf so.......
You guys NEED to add 0-60 and 1/4 mile times in your videos!!
You just need to stick a tune in it 😎 It's true.
Ok who’s really driving the Cayman? I didn’t see James with a baseball cap on 2:12
I am waiting for new generation of Porsche cars 😃😃
I am waiting for a new design generation of bmw...

Electric cayman - 2tons - have fun
I'd like to see how a Tuned FL5 Type R would do in these races.
Lose
@@aitorgallego98 😆😆😆
It would lose horribly.
Was very glad to see Carston break focus!😂
So, two main takeaways for me from this video.
1. The new golf r is DAMN friggin quick. It is INSANE what volkswagen is capable of with a little 2.0t 4 cylinder.
2. A 2 liter turbo decimated a brand new m2 from a dig and kept up with a brand new cayman in a roll and a dig. NUTS.
I mean it is awd and tuned so it is expected.
It's running near 50% more power than it came with stock, it should of done better tbh.
bro, the m2 is rear wheel so traction is an issue
@@slats1987 that advertised 446hp is more like 400hp to the wheels. Its running at 25% more power not 50%
Brilliant video. Stuttgart know their audience and nail it. Hence I sold mine. Each to their own and you summed it up brilliantly.
It has a intake and a tune. More like 400 hp
@@dbogdan17 Depends on the tune. I haven’t seen a single one make less than 400hp. Most off the shelf tunes are making 440-460 with no hardware changes
I live for Throttle House drag races and the "And I'm James..." 😂
Why am i not shocked the M2 will be on top regardless of the time frame race genre but that Porsche has the older Pontiac's GTO look a like rims.
