Boxster 981 S owner here. My car does not have the particulate filter. I put a valved FABSPEED VALVETRONIC Exhaust on the 3.4L flat 6. My Boxster is a PDK, not a stick. Despite all those differences, I have a crazy drone between 1800-2400 rpm if the engine is under load. So, downhill is quiet; uphill is boomingly loud. The sound is different in normal vs sport or sport plus. The sound is different if the exhaust is in LOUD or "quiet" mode. But the drone is still there. In fact, I can recall that the engine with the stock exhaust had the same growl but with the stock exhaust (not sports exhaust) it was not loud. Now, the exhaust is ALWAYS Loud... but the drone is booming at large road and at highway speeds. Over 87 mph it quiets down. Only one highway in the US has an 85 mph speed limit and it is not near my house. I suspect that just as the exhaust turned the car into a wild animal when accelerating or even down shifting or decelerating, it also made the drone that already existed MUCH LOUDER.
I rock CG VC, X-Pipe and flow-optimized OAP and man... it takes it to another league of enjoyment. I perhaps must not be very much drone-sensitive though
Happy 2 years of ownership!... I've had the Spyder as long as you , but with this same CF xpipe backbox plus the AC OAP (without OPF) and everything you describe about that low RPM drone applies.. probably I've had similar investigation as you but my conclusion is different in the sense that I believe that's the engine and the transmission vibration what causing that drone and that at 3RPM the car is silent ... the only thing different from your experience is that I've never felt the need to use noise cancelling buds but I don't use my Spyder to cruise and I don't use it with the top up either .
2-3k drone is always there no matter what exhaust you got, some guys inform the OE exhaust has the same issue as well. I got nonslienced JCR rear box on my gt4, 2-3k drone is okey to me. I guess just live with it anyways.
Kan tänka mig det @@emilstegfeldt ! Körde Spydern en del vintras med. Svinkul med taket nere i full snöstorm. 😂 Ja men absolut! Bara hojta till om du vill ta dig en provtur. :) Och gött att du fått tillbaka din Cayman! Så jäkla surt det du råkade ut för.. :(
At 10:10 you mention a track day video. Have you released it? I tracked my Spyder at Mantorp last week. Similarly specked with Cargrapgics. Have driven sporty standard cars before but this was something else. Precision an grip with that pitch. Already planning the next event in July.
Thanks for the update. Also looking forward to the track video. I have a Kline exhaust in my basement that I hope to install in a few weeks. Curious to hear the difference, as I think it’s hard to capture the car’s sound on video.
Hi great threads, but I’m still stuck on a few things.. you bought the race pipe but the x-pipe competition one is quieter isn’t it? Does it still have drone? I’m actually favouring the jcr (I’m in U.K.) because instead of just putting a big silencer they have used a resonator and I’m assuming it’s set to that nasty drone frequency? What do you know about this? Has anyone fitted one of those?
I have a couple of shops that im in discussions with. But there are 2-3 possible in the area that are specialists on Porsches. :) I just received some BMC air filters that will be mounted in a week or so. :)
thanks for the video. i have the same x pipe exhaust on my spyder pdk. the sound is really better but there is also this drone between 2000 and 2200 rpm. not disturbing with the roof down, but annoying with the roof up. I removed the synthoniser of sound but it does not attenuate the drone much. I now ask myself the question of the sport manifold 200cel in the first place or/and opf flow optimized, but I don't know if that will remove the drone .... in any case we can still increase the volume, there is still some margin with a gt3😊
Happy to hear that you have tested to remove the membrane, to bad it did not make much difference 😔 If you are in the US or fancy a tune I think the OPF/GPF-delete is the way to go. I will at least give it a try and report back! :)
Ohh!
@@huguesr1603 I disagree. The factory already has back-orders for 1 year + for all 718s now and has had to prematurely end GT4 production (leaving thousands of orders unfulfilled and outstanding) to allow enough time to build a couple of hundred GT4RS before 718 production ceases completely. It would surely be crazy to introduce another model when you cannot build anywhere near enough of your existing models...
There is no confirmation yet, but AP has told the press that it is possible to build it. Meaning they have looked in to it. He also said that they are still to decide if they should build it. I can imagine that it would be a last Hurrah for the 718 with combustion engines before going electric in 2024. Im at least on the list for one, if they now decide to make one. :)

Can’t wait to see your video when you have installed the OAPs

Thank you for being the laboratory test guinea pig for me in advance of the (eventually, Porsche factory, please!) delivery of my Boxster GTS
make more videos showing this car....literally i can look at this car forever and all over...what a great colour
I have a whole row of videos coming! The real modifications are about to start. :)

I'm not an expert but I think it just has to do with the car because just an X pipe rear silencer should never give more drone (as far as I know) ..

Have you installed the original tips in the CG xpipe?
Yes! No issue at all! :)

Did you go Saturday or Sunday? I went there on Sunday. :) Which spec/color do you have? The video will come soon.
Saturday. Beginners group. It is Janko’s old Spyder. Very happy how he specified it. Looking forward to your next release.

Would it be possible to put the link of this exhaust in the description please ?
Did you change the OAP? Finally, will you use Cargraphic flow optimized OAP to increase volume, but no drone?
OAP from Akrapovic are going on next week. :) rear silencer goin back to stock at the same time. At least for a while. 😬
@@WheelsToys ohhhh, but you shouldn’t! Try your CG X pipe exhaust + Akrapovic OAP = sound is amazing !
Any idea where you will go for the Ecu tune? Have you thought about replacing the air filters also?

I think its a Porsche issue..
Just an X pipe rear silencer should not give drone.
Isn’t there any problems with noise limits at the track with that exhaust?
I can imagine that it is when running lower DB tracks. Ran it at Mantorp and 105db limit without problems.

yes the spyder rs will arrive, but it will be 40000€ more and it will be necessary to manage to have one...
