As far as I'm aware it's not a Boxster. It's a 718 Spyder - not a 718 Boxster Spyder.
Great review Matt, nice words, and the filming & edit on point. As for the car have to concur, it is pretty much perfect.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. Can see why you love yours so much!
1st time reviewer (now Subscriber thanks to this video) and Roger nailed it. Everything from filming, critique, wording - all on point. Well done sir! As a 718 Spyder owner, you captured this car very well...much better than most.
OMG the best looking car at the moment and a Porsche 4 liter NA, 6 speed Spyder without a top, briljant. Looks better than even the 992 Speedster can you believe it? Woahh. I want one in Miami Blue, 6 speed manual yes for sure going to get one.
Best review of a Porsche GT product I’ve seen on UA-cam, I was already sold on the Spyder, you’ve just enhanced my feelings for owning one
My 2005 987 boxster S can break speed limit on 2nd gear as well if you rev 7000 rpm! Stop complain the tall gear! No one push the car to 8k all the time. Yeh, I know know know I am loosing some torque blablabla. Driv and enjoy that damn thing! It is a fantastic car.
I had a 987S for 15 years, traded for a 981 Spyder. I still miss my 987S, it’s more analog with the steering, esp.
This review was fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it!
“They don’t cost the earth to replace” unless you track it you’ll never have to replace the PCCBs disks. My 13 year old 997 Turbo is still on original brakes (and pads).
Hope you’re well T!
They were built for the track so are a better option, but for the majority the normal breaks are good enough.
Like you said it's a GT4 without a roof what more could we ask, for me it's the best looking 718 by far. Nice One
There’s nothing more you could want! Thanks for watching
@@scd I've found a good treat, go to the Fabspeed channel and just listen to that wonderful noise that transforms this car. With that exaust you really couldn't ask for more.
Love your reviews. No UA-cam posturing just someone who loves cars. All with bonus of being filmed on the great roads around my hometown!
Right, I'm gonna go drive my 987 Cayman now. It's therapy.
Enjoy!
I want to drive my 981 Spyder, but I usually settle for watching 981 or 718 videos…
Porsche is now making some boxster/caymans that will increase in value when they are 20+ years old. Unfortunately we won't be able to buy any gas then and there will be millions of petrol cars floating around in the antique market. So drive them, beat them, enjoy them while you still can.
@@gsthree9534Who are you kidding? There’s more than a BILLION ICE CARS ON THE ROAD NOW.
A perfect Porsche.
Makes me remember how my dad (who had a 356 1600 & later a 912; both before I was born) was holding out for a proper spyder or speedster in the boxster range, but died before it ever happened.
That’s a shame but he owned two very cool cars by the sound of things? 🙌
Great car and great review. I’ve a Spyder PDK on order and already own a 981 Spyder which I’m keeping. It’s an awesome car and the only weakness is the gearing on track which is why I’ve plumped for PDK this time. I couldn’t recommend the combination of a fantastic NA engine and a brilliant chassis enough for any enthusiast. They are cheap to run me bulletproof too. With electric only just 10 years away, I intend keeping my 2 Spyder’s forever.
James A Brown Why did you take another Spyder and not the GT4; since you keep both?
@@Franzino I like topless motoring and I also own a new model Aston Martin Vantage which ticks the fast coupe box for me.
@@JBthemanwithcars Thanks for the reply; you found the long gearing is also a issue on track? I only drove a 981 GT4 on the street and there was indeed the long gearing noticeable. But I was thinking it would be maybe less of an issue on track with the higher speeds there (then on the street).
About to push the button on one of these. Even with the PDK option, for me you described it best when you said it’s about fun and enjoyment. If you want ultimate speed get a 911 Turbo.
Awesome review Matt and great videography guys, bravo.
Thanks Kevin 🙌
I think the only people who say a Boxster isn't a real Porsche these days are those who have never sat their butt in one. Thread one of these down a tight, twisty road at 9/10ths with a passenger and they will be looking for hand holds (Jesus bars).
Good stuff. As a 997 owner (similar performance) these are have all the performance one would “need” to enjoy such a car, esp up canyons, etc. the problem comes in when so many people emphasis 0-60 times and racing off of the line at a stop light. In that case, cars are getting so quick now days, and with double clutch systems even many family sedans can keep up or beat these cars. So if your not one to magazine race and look at 0-60 times or race people in the city (which is dumb anyways), this car is plenty!!!
fabulous review Matt 👍 and top work on the video SCD 🙌
Glad you enjoyed it
You nailed the vibe of this car and so did Porsche when drawing up the plans for the perfect Boxtser...I saw a Spyder in the flesh down at my dealership here in Southern California for the first time and its a beautiful car. I've always been a coupe owner, but I would gladly have that car over 95% of coupes and well above any drop top in production today.
Thanks for watching buddy! It really is a lovely car and unique proposition. Does everything so well 🙌
Just bought one! I can’t wait for it to be delivered. I plan on swapping the exhaust and re-gearing the transmission. Apart from that it’s perfect!
Great video , thank you
I am one of not to many lucky one to own a 718 Spyder, absolutely love it
Very lucky! Enjoy
Great review - this guy gets “the sum of its parts” philosophy. And I have to say the black and gold combo is brilliant. Although I do love my GB Spyder colour and glad I ordered it. I’m with Jerry Seinfeld with respect I think this is deadman’s car - for me I just don’t know what else I could want could in a sports car for the road. It is. a brilliant car.
Well said! Agreed. As a road car it doesn’t get much better does it! Enjoy yours
Love it Matt. Glorious car.
Excellent review Matt 👍 love these and a friend of mine has one and loves it 😎
Thanks Clive!
Nice review, excuse me, may i ask what is the name of the song towards the ending bit of this video?
I always love a Porsche Review and Porsche have pulled it off again with the 718 Spyder. Just can't wait to get back into my 986 Boxster S as its always a blast on a twisty B road
I just got a 981 Spyder a month ago, after 15 years of a 987S. Lovely driving, all of ‘em.
Excellent review, an old school experience that rewards the driver, exactly what a sports car should be.
Glad you enjoyed it
If the long gearing is really a problem, there are after-market shops that can change out the rear differential (altho it could be pricey). For that matter, I'm wondering what the tab would be to take a 4.0 out of a wrecked GT3 and put in the Spyder, giving you 100 more hp (520 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of raw torque) and a red-line of 9,000 instead of the 8,000 on the Spyder's 4.0.
Hi, nice Spyder review. Can i just ask where to get the gold Spyder badges as shown in this review since I would like to put them on my 718 Spyder as well. They look great. Thanks.
Great review Matt. Can't wait until my Spyder arrives in mid January. But what was with the windshield wipers going the the sky was blue?
This is something we’d love to know the answer to as well 😂
Great review and some epic shots by Super Dan!!!
What’s the perfect Spyder for me having owned the 981 and driven the 718 on several occasions?
I would love the 981 softer suspension, more compliant, 718 engine as the extra torque is plentiful, 981 steering, weightier and more feedback, 981 sound track (up there with best) and all attached to a PDK box and used purely for euro tours roof down in the sunshine 😍😍😍
Doesn’t get much better as a recipe for a car does it! Everyone needs one! Think you need the extra poke of the 718 that’s for sure
I like my PDK, I always use it in manual and feel like I’m shifting gears as fast as on the Ducati.
No chance 718 betrer
Great Review. 👍🏻 It would be better if Porsche dropped the 718 monika on the car and instead just called this new F6 version the 982. The only slight disappointment with this new motor is that thanks to the new EU regulation PPF's, the sound still can't match the earlier 981. 😳
Brilliantly presented. Lovely car too.
Many thanks!
Awesome review - very much fitting to such an emotional car. This is it. That's the last one. Sad.
Instant classic - it's a keeper for handing down to the next generation who will not know anymore what it meant to have small explosion behind your back propelling the car.
Its the last gen compact sport car, light, manual, NA, mostly analogue, too many last last last....
Great review by MP... as always. People who mock and doubt the Boxster need to go and drive one.
Says a man who knows! Thanks for watching
That spec is 💰. 😍
Just works doesn’t it?
Great review.
Manual, analogue gauges, NA, Flat 6... PERFECTION
You know it 🙌
Flat 6, my friends
Great review. This is a one of a kind driver’s car. Outside of a C8, there isn’t another car produced today like this set up, as far as I can tell. Mid-mount engine, naturally aspirated 4-liter boxer engine that can be mated with 6-spd manual gear box, 2-seater, open top, that you can get a carbon fiber bucket seats and carbon ceramic brakes. On top of that, this thing is gorgeous, more so in person than photos and videos. It drives sublimely, perfectly balanced between chassis and power, sonorous high-rev engine note, perfect driving position and ideally set up pedals & gear box. I’ve got mine in 2020 and haven’t regretted one single mile of its 8000 ODO miles. It is by far the best driving Porsche I’ve ever driven out in the canyons on a sunny Sunday morning. If you find one, get it. You will not regret it. I recommend the bucket seats. It really connects you to the car so much better when slinging the car around the bends. Unless you are an ex-large person, I can tell you that I often do 400+ miles in one day without any discomfort. I am 6-ft tall, 200lbs and I fit perfectly in the seat. I also spec’d carbon ceramic brakes on the car and they are amazing.
Best Spyder review and what a spec!
Nice review, and such a car ! Some say though that the engine is lacking the extra bit of emotion that a 911 gt3 has. Did you have a chance to drive one ? I would love to se a Boxster that you could drive like a hooligan when you feel like it, or enjoy the ride on a sunny winter afternoon.
Great car, well filmed.
Thanks for watching!
Crisp review. Beautiful car indeed. Would be fun to own one and fly it around some twisties....
Annihilate B roads
Nice review Matt. The spec on Adrian's 718 Spyder is perfect. It looks fabulous. A couple of points I would highlight. The engine sound doesn't compare to the 981 Spyder. Which is a shame. An after market exhaust can partly fix that though. The steel brakes are good but anything that reduces weight is always welcome, especially on such a lovely sports car, so I would opt for PCCB if ordering new.
I don't folks that actually own these cars would agree. Having owned both, I can tell you the note is a bit different but still exciting. Plenty loud and sounds thrilling past 5-6k. I think the exhaust mods sounds ... like mods. Can't beat the Porsche engineers.
I would get the pccb brakes but I want red brakes and they force you to get them in black
@@darkhaven9119 Mine are in yellow…
@@clu4u black or yellow my bad but still. Red is way nicer. Black is ok but yellow? Eww lol. Bro why would you want yellow brakes😂
@@darkhaven9119 a black gt4 or spyder with yellow spec is cool, stiching, belts, brake calipers
I have this car and never put the top up. If I could change things I would have ordered the GTS Boxster in stead as I hate this manual roof. Luckily I store mine inside my garage when parked. Cheers from Canada.
What a guy 👏 as the maker intended!! Enjoy
As a 981 driver, I applaud the return of the flat 6. The Spyder is a cool car, but personally I'd go for the Boxster 4.0 GTS with PDK, as £10K cheaper , same engine as the Spyder plus an electric roof.
But no curvy booty like the Spyder. Such subtle differences make this car so much prettier...nothing against the GTS as it is a reasonable choice...as you stated.
Not a collectors as the Spyder .. you’ll see also you get the GT3 front end bigger brakes , better suspension
Fantastic review.
Thank you ✌️
Outstanding review!! RWM
Great video my dream car!! Well done mat!
Thanks!
Bought a 2023 Spyder new. Without a doubt, the best car for the money. Peak Porsche!!
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
great review.............
Very good car I'm saving for one
I have to say - most impressed with the review....very watchable and amiable presenter unlike some like MrJWW etc where it’s a cringe fest.
Keep up the good work SCD 👍
Thank you kindly Peter! We do it for the love of cars not for the money 😅🙌
great review....informative ...interesting....nice departure from the standard you tube vlogger...
Thanks! ✌️
What a spec!
Love its power, love its looks and love its sound.....HOW MUCH 😮 😱
Nice run in the Peak District.
Yes it was!
Firstly, I m truly impressed by the production quality of this review that underlines the point you re making: it s how it feels and not the numbers. That being said, the numbers are still truly impressive but any kinda hot hatch can get you in legal trouble quite easily nowadays but they don t feel the same whilst doing that. The spec of this demo car is bold but I love it and it suits the Spyder. I understand the criticism ppl voiced regarding the switch to 4cyl but honestly, it didn t stop me from getting my Cayman- at all. But okay, the Cayman is very different to a Boxster. Overall, you do lose in the "sense of the occasion" department but I wanted a sports car for daily use that still shines when you got the chance or feel like giving it a go. Even in the dullest commuter traffic, the Porsche DNA shines through whilst you enjoy good fuel economy and an overall package - chassis in particular - that simply laughs at the commonly more shouty competition when you feel like unleashing its potential...and yes, it still doesn t sound great when you do but the cars inclined to keep up at first fading away in the mirror still make you smile- a lot.
That being said, the Boxster is a different case as I should see the day I got one as a replacement car. It s still capable but once you got no roof, your brain instantly shouts "roadster" at you... and this is simply not what the 4cyl Boxster is or was destined to be. The Boxster is still a great car and there s a market for it but funny enough, this genuinely positive thing makes matters worse for it when it comes to enthusiasts. As you still can feel the good chassis and the promise of the Porsche legacy, you struggle that it doesn t feel like the roadster your brain tells you it should be. Therefore, if you re into open tops and generally are into the brand, do yourself a favour and stomach the substantially higher cost for the Spyder.
My man Matty P doing us proud!!!
Much better reviewer than that Jonty Bonty 😂😂
That’s fighting talk 🤣
That spec is so good.
it really is!
Perfectly reviewed.
718 Spyder with PDK and Cargraphic headers will be the next dream.
You got your windscreen wipers on brother.
Love my 718 GT4 so much I bought one. Dropping the heated buckets on a new one - big mistake Porsche. It’s why I bought a used one instead. OPF delete and you’re in sound heaven with a nice chunk of extra torque thrown in.
Perfect
Do the wipers turn off
Only turn them off when it rains
great review and great car. but i feel like it needs a bit more power.
That’s a fine balance 😅
@@scd I agree. Was wondering your thoughts on a 675lt spider vs a speciale ..... looking to add to my current lineup (scud, 911r, gt4 clubsport) . Again love your videos keep them coming !
Why are the wipers on?
It had just rained when we filmed this, and after the rain stopped the sun came out. Wipers are on because of road spray :)
why the convertible roof is not automatic
Isn’t the point of PCCB that you don’t need to replace them? And they don’t dump brake dust all over the wheels. No brainer.
This is so funny. Some journalists keeps on repeating what they once read from Porsche’s press material: the 981 Spyder is not a proper GT-Porsche and the 981 GT4 was from another world. This is true mostly only on paper. They share the most important bits. Yes the front end wasnt adjustable on Spyder and the the GT4 had the 991 GT3 front end and steering rack. But you know what? I’ve had the both cars since 2016 and I’ve naturally driven then back to back many times. The difference is very very hard to notice. Throw a set of Michelin Cup 2’s to the Spyder and it matches the GT4 9 times out of ten. The Spyder is btw lighter than the GT4. The bigger error people do is that now that the Porsche’s press material said that 718 Spyder is a proper GT-division’s product, they think it is in totally different league compared to the 981 Spyder. Well, actually, they are right: the 981 is almost 100 kg lighter and it sounds 100 times better. Infact, the 981 Spyder is one of the best sounding cars ever. The 718 Spyder sounds like a vacuum cleaner compared to it. The new engine on the 718 is not bad, but it it’s not a homerun. It’s heavy. It seems that the engine struggles to put down the claimed 420 hp at dynotests. Steering is lighter than in 981 Spyder and thus muted. The small diffrences in aero do not make wonders to the driving experince, no matter what press material says. And then there are production figures. There are only 2400 981 Spyders made for the global market. All this said, the 718 Spyder is not a bad car. Heck, it’s brilliant! And a beauty! But unlike many (journalists) think, the 981 Spyder is the better car.
It's not a Boxster... it's a 718 Spyder.
Whete how do get the “Spyder” in gold?
Why's it got GT4 centre caps on a spyder?
Cos they’re GT4 wheels
They are the wheels it came with, GT4 and Spyder have the same wheels, SO why has the owner put GT4 centre caps on?
718 is arrived as any model before you can’t compare. I own a 981 gts does not compare as it lacks a lot to the 718 as any previous model.
yes
Just add the 4.5L conversion for 100 more horses and it's perfect
One of the best looking cars imo.
Im really trying to understand the passion for cars tho, since im looking to buy one...people get super nerdy about them (ive driven this car 3 times already btw..)
For me its a bit like a vegan trying to convince me to eat an avocado toast for dinner instead of steak and fries.
I can guarantee that the moment you learn to ride a motorcycle properly, you're going to look back and laugh at how nerdy you were with those numbers and horsepower.
Im not dissing cars, I just want to inform you that there is an even more exciting vehicle that you have to try if youre into motorsports!
Take the chance while you're young, you truly are missing out if you think this car is exciting...
Also, you would make a very good motorcycle journalist.
If we going to be historically correct first 911 were 4 cyl.
With the stupidly complicated roof top I rather have a normal one even with the 2.0 is more then adequate. The Spider is more a toy.
Well it's not actually a Boxster anymore , it's just known as the Spyder, it's a GT car.
Yep that’s what he says ✌️
How much would a Porsche Boxster like this cost
In the US, base price is right at $100k. Not cheap. And then the Carbon buckets at $5900USD and PCCBs at almost $9k...those are the two most expensive options.
👌👌🏎🏎
Says a man who knows 💥
Roof up when you drive in Dubai, with 50 Celsius, of course everything is relevant 🤔🥰
Haha most of us don’t have that problem
I wanna have a porsche man
It’s a baby 918
Hardly, since it’s only a 2-seater with small luggage space(-es), and no tow bar😅
As a sports car it’s great, but the gearing, roof and sound is not as good as the best alternatives.
Hmmm....let's see, blue sky, so why are the wipers on?
Great drive video but I have to say , seeing your wiper sweep every 30 seconds on a sunny day drove me nuts. Turn off your intermittent wipers already!
It had just rained when we filmed this. Wipers are for road spray!
100%
"This is on Pilot Sport Cup 2s, it's a little but damp, 7.5 degrees ........ so I'm being a tad careful with it but .....". Anyone who knows Matt's "a tad careful" will know what this means :D ua-cam.com/video/j1qpq87tGZQ/v-deo.html
Haha you know him too well 😅
Spec is great except the seats. If it's a top-down only car, it should have the 18-way seats with SEAT HEATING.
But, racecar!
One flaw: not a switch operated hardtop convertible
A flaw that makes it one of the best looking convertible with the top up....of course Porsche's excuse is weight.
Not a GT division product. Just engine tuned by GT devision. Not even a GT devision engine
It most certainly is... The chassis is more GT division than anything on the car.
There is no freakin sound of the car :(
Please, please, please, shut your wipers off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you.
“A poor man’s 911” The usual utterance of a balding middle aged man who owns neither a Porsche or a 911.
If it had proper gear ratios, yes. The way it is with a manual, NO!
gear ratio is just perfect!!!
Purists are afraid of change. I get it . But sometimes companies need to change to attract the next generation of buyers . Do they always get the change right ? No . Should they completely change at least one model? Yes . And do so by inviting a few dozen people in from the generation you're trying to attract and give them the opportunity to drive , and critique your product giving you insight as to what they want. Never guess . Guessing can ruin a great product. Maybe there isn't anything wrong with your product and there's no need to change it . Maybe the problem is this new generation just doesn't know about your product and needs to be introduced...
Still this story of "poor's porsche"?? Please...
only 2 criticisms but they are huge....this gearing? this sound? doesn't fit the car
