- The 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS has the same 500bhp, 9000rpm 4.0litre Motorsport engine as the 911 GT3. What I want to know is which is the more fun to drive on-road?

Hell yeah. Instant classic. 500hp 9000rpm, top down, screaming engine, lightweight, mid-engined... perfection.
100% one of the last ever!
Wrong transmission tho
Lightweight?
Nothing like door pulls on a car stuffed with "infotainment".
Yeah I think it will hold its value very well
Well, apart from the stupid roof.
I'm no Porsche expert but 500 BHP, 4.0 litre engine, super fast auto, soft top and cramming all that into 1400 KG? Seems a really good package, well done Porsche.
I’ve owned the 991 GT3 RS, GT4 and 992 GT3 Touring. Now have the Spyder. The suspension is the best of any of them. The added compliance makes the car so useable, but with no roll or heave. Every video I’ve seen rather concentrates on how bonkers the car is, which is true, but it has the ability to waft as well. Lastly, after you’ve taken the roof off and replaced it a couple of times, it’s a non-issue. It’s easy and quick to change.
What's it like to 'tour' in, I.e 3+ hour drives with a passenger? I've got a s2 exige and considering something for the future abit more "comfortable" I.e, can spend longer time in without it being tiring and too small to take anyone and a something more than a hand bag with (cramped cockpit etc) many thanks
@@maceyj2Cruising on the highway, its exactly the same as any other boxster (comfort and noise wise). It only “shouts” if you’re hard on the gas.
How’s the gearing on the manual gearboxes for all the cars you’ve driven? What mph is 2nd gear redline at? Want a car that makes you row.
A real engine and a real dashboard with proper buttons, just as a car should be.
For sure, to me a nice set of gauges looks way more upmarket than a tacked on screen. It like an apple watch vs a Rolex. I’ve also always liked individual buttons and switches for everything because after owning the car for a while you can find everything by touch without taking your eyes off the road
Weird 😂
Just how OLD FASHIONED CARS FIT FOR A MUSEUM should be
@@pachy444the GT4RS and SRS are old school muscle cars. Not at all stuffed with infotainment and barely useful on the go as you can’t really hear music over the engine and road noise

Absolutely magnificent, Harry. Possibly the most enthusiastic I've heard you about anything in a long time. One of my absolute fave machines ever 🎉
He clearly enjoys this car yes🤩
How Porsche get away with making that noise in 2024 is a miracle! Thank goodness for Porsche 😂
Taycan aside, agreed.
Greenpeace probably didn’t expect everyone to drive this car in first and second gear only just to hear it rev😂😂
Yeah, Lamborghini agrees with that comment👍
My generation? Dude, I'm 41 😂
I think they test at 4,000 rpm not 9,000
Nice to see someone that actually gets the car and appreciates it for what it’s for
Perfect! what can be better on a Sunday evening! a bit of Harrys garage. and a smattering of Tyrrell’s classic workshop. nothing to beat these 2 car channels on youtube.
A huge shout-out to Mrs. M who often films the garage portion and much of the the travel videos. Many thanks Ma'am and appreciate your contribution.
Happiest I've seen Harry driving in ages. I don't think I'd stop grinning either.
This will be one of the most iconic Porsches of all time
Except for that maddening top! 😂

That sound track is insane. Just wow! Another great video Harry!
I drive a 991.1 911 S with a naturally aspirated engine. I was feeling pretty smug as Harry accelerates up the hill out of Burford. "Mine sounds just like that," I was thinking. Then he got to 8,000 rpm and suddenly it's like we're at Le Mans. I'm still slightly smug but that hi-revving motorsport engine sounds awesome.
I love the way you always keep EVERY car under 60mph out of that junction, Harry. Genius.
Flame away, but the 911's dont evoke the visceral reactions you get from the 718 Spyder RS.
Such a great sports car.
Bloody expensive, though.
Very true, unfortunately the prices are pretty crazy. Keep in mind when the boxster first came out they were under $40,000. I understand they’re going to be more expensive in 2024 but it seems like they’re competing directly with themselves.
The 992.1 911 is much better car overall though than something like 718 GTS 4.0, GT4, or this. Yeah th e718s have much better balance, handle, and grip better, but they are much less refined, less luxurious, not as nice inside, and have harsher ride. Even the Bose sound system is much better on the 911 than the 718. I would take 992.1 Carrera S over them, but it is a slightly different purpose.

I may get flack for this... something about the gt4 / gt4 rs variants appeals to me more than the 911 equivalents... great review as ever harry!
After 11 911s over the years, I got bored of Porsche and contemplated switching to Ferrari or Lamborghini, but then the GT4RS came along, and my god what a car!
You’re not wrong. I sell super cars and wanted to hate 718 as they’re bottom of the food chain price wise. GT4 and 4RS are utterly sensational. Up there with the very best cars!
Hearing you all giggly, says it all Harry! Big shout out to the GT team at Porsche. And and a big wave to Walther Rörhl!

This video may be peak Harry's Garage. Beautiful summer day, fantastic car, Harry on top form.
The Spyder RS to me is the car that creates more smiles than the rest of the GT products offered currently. Smaller overall size than a 992 GT3, much softer ride for the street, mid engine, and hitting 9000rpm with intakes screaming right by you and your passengers ears - it’s sublime. Of course no manual but the shorter geared PDK is still fun in its own right. I think this will go down as one of the special ones
Yeah, you are TRUE hardcore, right? And surely have never driven this car.
@CarsWithNoah nailed it. Not sure you need a GT3 other than for ‘flex’ and prestige. 718 will be more fun on UK roads, no question.
A Porsche sem querer acabou criando algo mais interessante que qualquer 911 moderno 😂
I stumbled upon this after some late night surfing, quite untargetted, and came across this. I internally shouted YES!!!
Edited to add. That roof looks like a ballache.
Drove one of these around Porsche's track at Silverstone, and then out on some public roads. Absolutely phenomenal! Currently have a manual 718 Spyder, which I love. But I'd change to an RS in a hearbeat.
@manisandher yep, they’re a masterpiece. You would assume Spyder and RS are quite similar but they’re different animals. There are not many new cars that are as fun as 718 RS, regardless of price point.
@@PSUK997 I'm an MX-5 driver and I think the Mazda is a fantastically engineered car and huge amount of fun to drive, and only weighs 1000kg. . I'm also an ex-911 Carrera owner. Road & Track say the only true competition the MX-5 has is from the Boxster. The RS where I live is about 6x the price of the MX-5. Just think for me anyway it's not worth the price or the running costs-but agree that the RS is very impressive.
I have a 2007 10th Anniversary model, 2 7 lite 5 speed and I love it. It is such a fun car to drive and I can't get into too much trouble. This thing in bonkers, but I'd love one. As always, great job Harry.
I rarely, if ever, disagree with Harry on aesthetics. But, I think this spec looks fantastic, which is weird because I generally don't really like white cars. And, what a glorious sound from that thing. Love it.
Crickey! Harry! Hearing that engine and seeing the rev count bounce I had memories of riding a fast motorbike and thats a compliment. Merci!
Harry Sir could you please set a ranking of all your noise tests (in dB) and keep it updated ?
I think it’s awesome that Porsche is taking the Boxster more seriously. In the past, it was known for being the “poor man’s Porsche”, whereas now, it competes with the higher end Porsches. Very cool to see!
Great video as always, Harry!
Porsche: Make the best compact, open top road car you can. It must be better than the last Spyder - faster, more agile, more visceral.
Also Porsche: Every iteration of Spyder must make the roof more of a faff. Find ways to make it a more challenging puzzle.
I've slept in tents more easy to rig than that roof.
It's really a simple roof, I think Harry's gotten to the point he'd rather have the weight penalty with a manual folder at least than to have to pop a hatch and pick up the roof and place it on the windshield frame lol. It's not like 99.9% of the buyers are going to use the roof, ever, regardless 😅
I was whatching a vid on the mazda mx5 and the guy demonstrated the simplicity and ease of the fully manual soft top operation ,just reach behind and pull on a handle to bring the roof over, then I think it was two latches you clipped to lock roof into place, so simple and easy it was genius, no electrical mechanisms to worry about, you could do it all sitting in the drvers seat no problem 😊
A barraca girava 9 mil rpm do lado da sua orelha?
@@johnnyboy1586 ...yeah, but it's a mazda.
That engine in one without all the silly carbon bits and a normal convertible roof would be brilliant.
You can spec it with painted bonnet at no cost, or excusing the WP
“Normal” roof won’t fit. You’d have to redesign the entire rear deck lid and trunk space; possibly lose those gorgeous spyder humps. No thanks.
991 Speedster is my answer, still not a normal roof but easier to live with.
That silly roof makes me prefer the less extreme GTS
Acho que dá pra ter o capô de carbono pintado na mesma cor do carro, mas essa moda de carbono exposto é bem exagerada
Fantastic sound track, also noted that it doesn't pop and bang! Well done Porsche!
It must be something special - I’ve never seen you smile so much on any road test. Is it still the poor man’s Porsche?
Acho que esse é o melhor Porsche de rua acompanhado do GT3 ST
Brings back the university days of my youth, where in 1985 I had a 1981 black Datsun 280zx turbo 2seater, with the requisite T-Tops, wherein when removed, they were stored under tie-down restraints, under the back hatch…. Thus why my SO, for her “toy car”, drives a 2015 911 Targa S4… a compromise btwn the cabo and the sunroof option
That sounds absolutely flipping fantastic!!! 😊
The sound at top of the rev range. Glorious.
It’s great seeing you enjoying this car so much Harry. I do however think you should have another drive in the GT4RS while it’s still summer, because your review of that car was done on cold wet days, and you weren’t able to explore/exploit the cars’ real potential.
Fortunately, I actually own one (GT4RS), and I love it. Its Winter now in Sydney, however when it was sunny and dry every day, I would drive the pants off it. It loves windy mountain roads, and the sound of that engine reverberating through the hills & mountains is a glorious reminder of pure motoring pleasure.
What a joy to watch! The boxster seems like it gives all the right feels.
Gave me goosebumps when you went up that hill the noise was amazing 👌
I think the question in the title is rhetorical. Of course it's the greatest Boxster. The question is, is it the greatest Porsche? I own this car, and several other amazing Porsches. I like it more than I thought I would!
Genuine dream car.
Damned expensive and unobtainable, though.
It's too small (I'm 6'2") and too rough and loud for me. I would certainly take a Carrera S over it, but it is a special car and will no doubt hold its value very well.

Excellent review Harry - thank you.
I like to DIY, it enhances my experience with the workmanship and engineering of a car, and saves me a ton of money. I would always be bothered that I have zero access to the engine, it's like missing a huge part of the car experience. But I suppose if you have the money you don't need to get your hands dirty just enjoy the roar.
Zero access to the engine is disappointing for sure. I don’t own one at the moment, but I am always enamored by the sight of a late model Nissan GTR engine when the bonnet is opened, where you can literally see every important aspect of the engine.
I'm like you and like my diy and i looked at a Boxster (second hand) and I was surprised that the access isn't too bad via rear bulkhead panel and access panels in the rear arches. Yes, more of a faff but you don't change spark plugs and belts that often. What killed it for me is that it is impractical so a 2nd or 3rd car that wouldn't get used that much.
Great car - I couldn't believe the faff with the hood - very similar to an S1 Elise!!
9:14 I see what you did with the black tape, or rather tried to do. ;-)
(P.S. Gotta love Mr. Metcalfe! Always goes for the old school lo-tech options, none of your modern editing nonsense! 😂 Please, never change Mr. Metcalfe! 👍)

Pretty sure I saw 97 on the dash up the hill...
I don't get what it achieves if the rpm and gear are visible
Harry….i think you need to ring up Raz Rehan and get advice on dashboard security!! The tape needed to be a bit longer and two bits of it! 😃😃😃😃
@@ep19819000 in third is about 97 if the gearing’s the same as the GT4 RS …
Induction noise behind your ears, isn’t this the dream. What a car and for the price of a Tesla but without the depreciation. If there’s an award for the best car to come out of 2024 I think this is it. For those of us who like character, feel etc in a car then this might just be the one. Porsche really are knocking out some fine machines and I hope they keep this trend up!
Glorious engine sound! 😁
Coincidentally I recently photographed a white 718 Spyder RS near Stow-on-the-Wold. Another stunning review Harry. Great to see you in a spyder/convertible again.
That roof seems like an unacceptably large pain in the back side in this day and age.
I agree, if it is meant to be more road-focused, they should have designed a simple manual roof like the ND MX-5, with one-handed operation after the rear cover swings open.
It’s the Spyder, the Boxster is a conventional convertible.
The roof will be part of Spyder RS lore from this point forward.
@@tdolan500 traditionally a spider had a lower roof line going right back to the days of the 356. That was the stylistic difference and not a fiddly, poorly engineered roof.
It is a special occasion roof, spyders are driven with the roof down.
RS is even more special. These are not built to be daily’s.. they are for Sunday mornings.
If you want it easier, get a 4.0 boxster
Instant legend for sure, I could feel the enthusiasm. I’d love for Harry to drive the GT spyder now to compare. I hope your microphones survived LOL.
Great car and great Vid, Harry. 👍🏻 Not sure about the ultra-fiddly roof though and dull (EU Strangled) engine note though...981 version sounds so much nicer. 😉 Still, a modern great for sure.😄

@@Nord_Mann yes. I laugh when people gather around on start up and hear this flat, generic car sound. Lol
Harry, I've noticed in recent times a lack of in cockpit forward views. The view that really puts you in the drivers seat.
The sprint up the hill, that right turn you always do, also that s bend all used to be shown from the cockpit.
Now all these seem to be external shots. it just isn't the same. Thoughts?
Starts on a key.. buttons and minimal screen, just needs a six speed manual. Porsche to be complemented for producing such a machine in the twilight of ICE cars. Sounds pretty good as well.
That howl is just gorgeous. And the quick, sharp auto gear changing is also impressive.

Fabulous! Listening to that engine howl to redline! Oh!
Thank you ever so much for this review. And your editing and sound work (how did you ever get your voice to be heard over the wind noise and that engine?) is really good. Your B-roll is wonderful! Thanks!
The roof on that reminds me of an 1980s kit car.... Nobody wants to mess about like that in a country where it can rain at any moment
It seems a lot of people do… that’s why you can’t buy one…
The roof takes less than 10 seconds to pop on... you're relying on Harry, who gets flustered over little things with vehicles like exposed carbon hoods when it's a no cost option for paint with the Weissach, and it doesn't come with carbon if you don't get the Weissach lol.
Literally zero people seriously considering this car for purchase will be swayed out of buying it because of the roof.... and if they really are, they can literally just go buy the regular 718 Spyder instead with it's manual folder instead of the Spyder RS' detachable top.
God now I know why we don't have Blazers and Jimmy's with their full FIBERGLASS removable hardtops anymore, people like yourself complaining, probably directly to the manufacturer 🙄
Now people can't have nice things, thanks Karen444
The engine gives this one character. That’s what makes it special and differentiates it from the other great Porsches.

Well, this ones north of 120 thousand pounds, so nobody poor is going to be buying it, that's for sure. I had to laugh when Harry said "who'd have thought when the Boxster was introduced it'd end up doing 200mph!" - well, I doubt anyone ever would have thought they'd be charging that kind of money for one back then either - you'd f*ck*ng hope it could do 200mph at well over a hundred thousand pounds.

Don't worry by the end of the year they will give up on them, EV batteries are too expensive and cutting into profits for most car makers.

I agree, this is definitely my lottery winnings dream car. I could never afford a high end sports car but I’ve had several sports bikes, everything from 600’s to liter bikes and I’ll always love the rush of a high revving engine. It just sucks that everything is so expensive these days. Back in my younger days, after passing my Series 7 and 63 I treated myself to a brand new Kawasaki ZX6R. It had a 15,000 rpm redline and was only $6800 out the door, all taxes included. Of everything I’ve ever owned that’s the best value for money of anything I ever bought. I rode it for years, put over 30,000 miles on it and still got $4500 for it when I sold it. I only changed the oil and tires and put 1 chain and socket set.
