Step by step guide to how you mount BMC open air filters and get a RS-like sound in your 4.0l Porsche Spyder, GT4 and GTS models. Same goes for any 981 or 718 models!
The best mod I have done so far. Beats a $$$$ aftermarket exhaust!
I installed these filters and yes they made a difference. I have a 718 Spyder with the JCR rear exhaust only. The main difference is between the 5-8k rpm range, the intake sound is louder. Thank you for the installation guide!
Are you telling me that the JCR EXHAUST upgrade is only noticeable from 5-8 k rpm ?
Absolutely perfect👌
GT4 RS has even louder intake sound but this intake sounds better imo. GT4 RS intake sounds a bit too "buzzy".
Remove the opf, keep the exhaust stock, the bmc air filters is a plus .
Have it slightly remap> 450hp and a true Porsche gt sound ,you will forget about the 981😎
You’re dreaming of you think >450hp is possible with a remap and air filter.
Well… dreaming or not 😂. It is not a “simple remap and air filter” but the removal of the opf cancels a big restriction in the exhaust… and the remap does make sense then…I also have the car and the power chart. Mine makes 452 hp and 451Nm.
@@clu4u most tunes for GTS 4.0 and GT4/Spyder are rated at 430-440hp. 450 is in reach with high flow filters and OAP+back box upgrade.
@@Eurosport.Automotive I'll buy 430-440 on the GTS 4.0 tune, but is it mostly because they raise the redline? That's something I would not want to do. (New GTS 4.0 owner here and probably not messing with it until warranty runs out).
@@BillLee3I also have a GTS 4.0. The engine is 100% physically identical to the GT4s engine. The only difference is the GTS 4.0 will start to close the throttle plate at high rpm to drop the peak power by 20hp.
Most tunes will bring the redline up to 8000rpm (equal to the GT4s) so it’s no detriment to reliability.
Peak power occurs at around 7600rpm on the GT4, so the raised redline isn’t what’s generating the extra power. The power bump is coming from the throttle plate actually staying wide open (which it doesn’t on the GTS).
You’re my hero.
Thank you for the installation instructions.
I have a question, when quickly accelerating or when giving intermediate gas, I now have a short insertion of a metallic sound, is that with you also with the short metal sound?
Super video, thanks. Do you think that the same result can be achieved with the K&N filters?
Yes, absolutely! Even though the KN are a bit smaller.
@@WheelsToys thank you
Is there drone while cruising on the highway? Thanks!
i love your car
That doesn’t sound like the RS to me. It might be louder, but that doesn’t automatically translate to the same tone. The RS engine (and GT3) and a very specific characteristic “howl” that really seems to become more apparent after around 6500rpm and intensifies to redline. The GT4 (and other Porsche engines) doesn’t have this characteristic.
Are you deaf??
This GT4 has a sharper, higher pitched intake scream than the 992 GT3!

Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!! (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!!!!!!!!
Need to get rid of those Aholes farleft extremists politicians and change back the previous laws.
you talk too much bro. more action less talking. Nice video
I did this mod on my current Spyder and done it in the past to 981 and all of my cars actually, and to me it does close to zero difference. BTW I also have CG X pipe with OPF delete pipes and that is the best thing you can do to 982 4.0 engine. Stock exhaust sounds so bad, its horrible, and it's crazy how they keep doing it also on GT4RS and upcoming Spyder RS.
How's the drone with the CG X-pipe before and after OPF delete pipes?
If this mod "does close to zero difference," why have you done it on multiple vehicles?
@ThePetrolHeart I agree - you can really not detect any significant improvement in sound...
@@AncientAviator while there is little or no improvement in sound, the BMC filters improve airflow into the engine and thus provide a minor performance improvement
@@henr1k5 I would say the drone is definitely there, but it's not that bad considering it's a sports car... one thing worth mentioning is that the drone is stronger with valves closed on CG X-pipe, so if you're considering an exhaust just get cheaper one without valves.
I have the BMC filters in my 981.GT4. and they sound quite good. With the filters on, your car started sounding closer to a 981 sibling; although still a bit less volume compared to. Well done with the car and video - cheers
Great video, wish someone can explain how some feel major improvement sound and other claim near nothing
Haha, only a carnut can appreciate your reaction! Sounds great and that's always the first mod I do to my cars. Great video thanks..:)
I just did it on my 4.0 GTS. It tooks me less than 45 min. Really well explained. To remove the tricky nut under the ECU, was easy with a #10 tube wrench.
With exhaust stock, a bit better sound over 6.500 rpm to limit, but not outstanding. Thank you !
OMG what a beautiful car the 718 Spyder, sounds great money spend wisely on this mod for sure i am going do the same. Yes people smile on yr face open driving the Spyder is amazing.
Definitely the best sound mod per $ spent on my 718 Spyder. It was already a huge step up when I upgraded with Soul GPF bypass & valved exhaust muffler, but somehow I can only catch that howling intake occasionally. With BMC open air filters, it's RS howl anytime above 4k rpm. Even with the valve closed & sport mode off. Now I started questioning if the aftermarket muffler is even necessary.
Thanks for the tip. Will try BCM filters before throwing on the Soul
That’s very interesting and I will consider it for my 718 GTS when it eventually arrives. I have a BCF exhaust (back box only) ready to fit immediately so we will see if I still want more noise ! Thank you for sharing your time, money and hard work...
would you upload videos with the BCF rear ? I'm planning to do it also
Thank you for the guide. The instructions are good but it may take just a bit more effort i.e. pulling the originals if car is new, getting to the lower ECU nut and I broke a tab on drivers side trim cover. I had the opportunity to have 718 & 981 side by side. The air cleaner helps but it is not going to change the sound to be as good as the 981. Probably worth the time and money. But I don't see it as a "magic" inexpensive alternative to an exhaust system. I'll see how the epoxy holds tomorrow.
interesting.. I installed the OAPs on my spyder. made a big difference. so much so I decided to skip an exhaust. I do like the idea of 'hearing' more from the cockpit from the intake. I wish there was a before and after vid.... but you really noticed a difference? also, any changes in the exhaust note... down shift 'burbling'.. im hoping this will allow for more of that great burble that I got on my 981.
When are the akrapovic pipes and tune coming? It’s been 3 months
OK, advice from you and anyone in the community who's done the same. I am doing the cargraphic mod rather than the collar mod, even if much more expense, because I want to be able to make the car run very stealthy on the freeway and in neighborhoods. However, I want to be able to push a button and get as much of the roar of the flat-6 as I can, across the full rev range. I think I'd like more induction noise as you get with the mod in this video, but I don't want to jeopardize the ability to run quietly when I want. Is this mod kind of a building thing that is really only different above 4K? If so, it sounds like it's a bargain. But I am absolutely against it if it really affects the car when puttering around neighborhoods or comfortably cruising on the freeway. Thoughts after having it for a while?
ANDREW GARFIELD OWNS A 718 SPPYDER??? OMG SO AWESOME!
Do you think you will have problems When you service your car in the Porsche dealer ?
nope its a valid aftermarket part, Porsche themselves use BMCV filters on the 991 GT3RS
Just completed the BMC filters installation after watching this video tutorial. Everything went smoothly except that nut at the right bottom corner of ECU. It took a bit of fiddling but managed to do it eventually. Thanks for the very clear and concise instructions.
The lubrication is silicone grease. Anytime you take this out a quick coat should be added to the seals.
at the back of your spyder you have only the spyder logo without the 718, how did you remove the 718 logo
?
The whole car is covered in PPF. During the installation they remove the logos. (I think using fishing-line). Then asked them to only reinstall the Spyder part. :)
I had this done from factory, then painted gold too to match my alloys : )
damn that sounds good
Hi can you confirm that the only change is the air filter et the exhaust valve cargraphic?(nothing on link pipe and exhaust? thanks
Correct. :) Those are the only mods
Sounds glorious.
Hi!
Will the Air filters from BMC void the Porsche Center/Porsche appproved warranty?
Picking up my 718 GT4 tomorrow and have ordered Cargraphic Valve Control Unit. Asked the seller but he couldnt say.
If you have a problem with the engine or car and need to bring it in I would consider switching back to stock before. But porsche uses these kinds of filters for the 3RS so they won’t be super mad to see them. :)
snake oil.
It is honestly hard to tell the difference from the video. I certainly wish there is a huge improvement as I’m contemplating on my upgrades. But I thought the main culprit of the poor sound is the GPF and the valves programmed to close between approx 2-4k rpm.
It is hard to tell on the video but I think what he is getting at is the sound INSIDE the car. I do think I can hear it. These types of videos don’t project sound very well. But it does sound pretty damn good for “stock” exhaust. Anyway, I already have Kline exhaust I may think about this mod next time the car goes in!!!
AWESOME MOD!! Love it. Deeper rougher sound. No need to spend on an exhaust any longer. $10k savings in my book!! Thanks!!
Every Honda with open filter sounds like this
I wanted to hear the sound of upshifts and downshifts
whats with your sound right now? :)
Great vid! Will do this on my Spyder this winter. Will I see you at Mantorp on the 9th?
Any updates on the exhaust @Wheels & Toys?
Thanks. Wow you talk a lot ;)
please do a cinematic shots showing only your car ...
all in with hood up and also hood down
I don't hear a difference
Tjena Andreas,
Framförallt motorväg 105-115 i 7ans växel.
So where are the OAP & Tune vids??
It’s coming! But on the GT4 instead. :)

How come you sold the spyder ? Why no more updates
I sold it and bought a GT4 thinking I would drive it more on the tracks but boy was I wrong. Ended up driving it less so I sold it and started to look for another Spyder. So 3 weeks ago in a snow blizzard i brought my new Spyder home. :) as soon as its gotten its PPF it will return to the channel with plenty of more updates. 🥰
@@WheelsToys what is the mods of your new spyder?
@@WheelsToysthanks we miss your updates.
Unfortunately those sport filters tend to have lower filtration efficiency than standard paper ones. Also any potential power increases are seen only at high flow levels (= rpm). Better sound yes but more ingress into the engine as well (= more oil contamination resulting in shorter oil and engine life). And then there are some sport filters that need to be moisturized with special oil to reach the claimed filtration efficiency. However, excessive oil may be dragged into the intake system leading to a malfunction of the air-mass sensor and so on. My bottomline, for RS models, yes but on a daily GTS or something....No.
This car has no air mass sensor. It's calculating with the pressure inside the manifold.
Thank you for another great video. I just replaced mine filters with BMC along with 15 others Spyders and GT4s. GT4 will take longer time to change. My review is base on 718 Spyder. Stock OAP, JCR REAR EXHAUST, no valve controller. At 4000km, it sounded amazing. I only drove for 25mins. It does put a smile on my face. IMO, it's worth it.
If you have a 718 and you're worried about annoying your neighbors I feel bad for you
Do you have to change 2 filters or just 1? 🙏
Did you watch the video??
