Ah, hah! I installed a standard replacement balancer on my 302 about a year ago. My dad and I had questions about the fitment. We got it on as far as it would go and it protrudes outside of my timing cover like yours does. We weren't sure if the balancer was on all the way. Thank you for answering my questions without me having to ask.
The only problem with using the crank bolt to install the balancer that I ran into was with an aftermarket crank that did not have a deep enough hole. The bolt bottomed out before the balancer was on all the way. This was with the motor in the car so it was not obvious that it was not seated. It eventually started leaking oil between the hub and the crank. That is how I noticed that I could rotate the washer on the bolt.

I worry about putting a 5 Liter balancer on a 302 engine. I have the same worries about flywheels.
