I've always seen nightwork as a black metal take on the sound of opeth and katatonia at the sound, a truly progressive and melodic take on 90s black metal
I think those bands are very closely linked as a matter of fact, you might even add Edge of Sanity or Opthalamia into the mix. Dan Swano produced most of their records if I recall. I still own all of their albums and they are all perfection.
It warms my diabolical heart that in the year 2022 somebody went out of their way to make a lengthy video about the deep dark gem DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE! Well done, young man! And I can not reveal my source but let's just say it's possible there will be another DM album someday.... PS. I own every single Katatonia release + all side projects and various pressings of all releases. I am meaning to make a collection video soon. Lots of DM too... I think I have at least 3 different pressings of each album. Hails from Canada!
@@patrickbertlein4626 It’s absolutely a classic. It has everything any music lover would want. From jazz, Latin to black metal. Although a lot of “borrowed” themes from movies and classical pieces.
I did give _Ravendust_ a listen because of your video and did enjoy it! _Nightwork_ is something I need to give a listen. I should give _Death's Design_ a shot again simply because that back story is amazing.
absolutely love this band. i happened to discover this band way back in the day before getting into katatonia and all the other bands associated with their members. love all of their releases.
You are so incredibly correct, as someone who has Emperor forever emblazoned on my body via ink. I totally agree with you. I love love Diabolical Masquerade's actual good music. I would also love to hear what you think about the band FOG from the early 90's American band. It's such a masterful work.
My friend introduced me to DM when I was 13, now I'm almost 30 and still I think that is the most wholesome black metal experience. Rider On The Bonez is just the best and darkest metal song ever
This has been a reason to retry them and there are so many similarities in voice to that of Sigh. I never knew the Katatonia connection but it makes full sense whereas the Emperor one doesn't I dunno besides symphonic/ synth. In fact. There's definitely a gothic black element to this that if you haven't heard Moonspells first two albums what are you doing? As for experimentation across other genres within the second decade of the 90's for black metal you can pretty much thank Filosofem for that, it's the foundation.
I've always thought that the black metal band, Valdrin, at least on their earlier albums, had some of the spooky, cavernous qualities of Diabolical Masquerade that I really love.
De Praestigiis Angelorum is such an underated album! ice clear drumming from blastum with beautiful dissonant melodies. banger! i wish agonia would repress this one. edit: i see they did. thanks for that
@@mysteriousparadoxproductio9339 I don't know personally, but they do use swastikas in some of their designs. That said, I do know the dude from Conflict (he's vegan) attacked people with a knife at a black metal show for having dead animal stuff on stage. Personally, that type of behavior seems way worse than using what some people may call "shady" symbology in art.
Listened to Nightwork and Death's Design a few times, but honestly never got into Diabolical Masquerade as much as other acts. Early 2000's still produced some amazing stuff, look at Naglfar, Tenebrosus, The Legion, Stutthof, and many more (promo channel Unholywarlust! puts up some serious gems from those days). I see you VI "De Praestigiis Angelorum" vinyl, love that album.
You are correct with the early 2000's being weird for black metal. For one side, you have Dimmu Borgir going with a bigger production; then you have bands obssesed with industrial elements like Dodheimsgard, Mayhem on Delcaration of War, ...And Oceans and Red Harvest; and lastly you have those progressive bands like Diabolical Masquerade, Arcturus, Borknagar and Emperor when they released Prometheus. I still view that era with a lot of nostalgia
Although i would love to have another Diabolical Masquerade album to listen to i think that Anders aka Blakkheim ended the project at the right time Death's Design in my opinion is a #Masterpiece
I'm still pissed my ex's kid has my Phantom Lodge tape, but at least I got Ravendusk on vinyl. Such a good project!! Got to disagree as well with PL, the riffs on it are so good. Got to revisit it now.
I was obsessed with this band's final two records either towards the end of high school or for the few years after graduating... I revisited recently 10+ years later and it still holds up. I've mostly given up on BM with a few exceptions like GBK, DsO, WITTR, and some other stuff that maybe is more accurately black n roll at times (Shining and Young & In the Way). Most melodic shit + most symphonic shit falls into the cheesy category at this point and it's not able to click with me. Black metal is always capable of being great, but so many of the artists have done a shit job at differentiating from generic trem picked "riffs" with lousy wimpy drumming.
Nothing quite like revisiting an album after 10 years that you liked but wasn't hyper about (Filosofem in my case) inadvertantly hear shades of what that album inspired during the years in between (WITTR, sunn o))), Electric Wizard, Darkspace, Lurker Of Chalice, Teitanblood etc) only to retry it and have it completely split open your head let alone like it more. I've had a mini revelation with NIghtwork after finding out it's Katatonia connection but above was on a decade long scale of finally clicking to pretty much be the most important album.
From what I understand Bloodbath was supposed to be a very simple death metal band that would be thought up through a bunch of drunk conversations through the members lmao
DM is one of very few black metal bands I can still listen to, after my teenage years of Burzum and Bodom worship. Nightwork is the best black metal album ever.
Wyatt, I was not impressed with Diabolical Masquerade. I listened to this whole video and I was expecting something even better than Griseus. But this is not experimental or boundary pushing in the slightest. It sounds like a much happier version of Dimmu Borgir or Emperor. The "symphonic" elements sound like the MIDI music that they used to play in the 1990s Mr. Olympia contests. I'm surprised you would describe any of these riffs as "sinister", they sound bright and optimistic in a way almost like a black metal equivalent of Lykathea Aflame, but not nearly as good. I wouldn't say it's bad or unlistenable, but very basic, predictable, melodic, accessible, and uninteresting. Listened to Nightwork and I'd give it a 5.5/10. After this I really just wanted to listen to both Aquilus albums.

It does at times feel like a sequel to Brave Murder Day and Dance Of December Souls if Kat went that direction.
I'm glad you mentioned Dan Swano. You can tell almost instantly that the quality of the album's production was going to be awesome.
