It should be mentioned that the song Blood Fire Death by Bathory uses a lot of keyboards, and to my understanding it's the first black metal song with keys. Emperor have stated many times that Bathory was a big influience on them and with this song it is very obvious!
I agree and think something is different about Northern Europe than America and it would serve the US to emulate it at least in the right way, since the culture is quite different
Emperor is my all time favorite black metal band and Ihsahn is a musical genius. In the Nightside Eclipse and Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk are masterclass albums in symphonic black metal with Nightside Eclipse being my favorite black metal album of all time. Also, I like how you have the krautrock band Faust in the background.
Just to point out some things, Mortiis also played in Emperor’s EP and In The Shadows Rises, though he did lyrics for ITNE and Faust and Mortiis also played in a special online show in the quarantine, great video, I hope Abigor will be the next band in this series
Emperor is, by far, my favorite Black Metal band. To answer your question regarding Faust and gaining redemption...Did he serve his time? Yes? Then he's redeemed.
Presidents and other warlords push red buttons or people to their grave? They get hall of world fame ... ... Obama? Yes, the so called best president world police America had in many years? The guy who got the so called "Noble peace price"? The guy who made war, killing and suffering for 8 years abroad? He get millions for making speech and show his face. Norwegian journalists get a wet boner just by mentioning his name. Try to mention Greven up here! Faust did kill a guy - he also had to go to jail. It is just cHristian people who can be redeemed - as long as they confess and ask for forgivenes., right? The rest of us? We must always be left in the shadow land... Viva Faust, viva Djevel!
Fantastic video, Wyatt. Your "explaining" series are some of my favorite videos on YT. Extreme metal has so many interesting bands and band members that make this style of videos so insightful. I was kinda surprised to see that you'd do one of these videos on Emperor, since they're already such a popular and well-known band, but there was a lot in this video that I learnt about the band. In my opinion, they're the best band out of the 2nd wave Norwegian BM scene. Overall, great stuff and looking forward to more videos. I'd love to see an "Explaining Blut Aus Nord" or "Explaining Tetragrammacide"
Equilibrium is only hard to appreciate if you compare it to the previous two. I look at it as Bach with electric guitars which makes it so much better.
Good video brother! I am one of the fans who can find enjoyment in all 4 LPs, but I almost always return to the early material. I love Eclipse and Anthems, but the atmosphere and songwriting in Eclipse will always be my fav. They went to a more accessible melodeath, progressive style with IX Equilibrium and then full-on progressive metal with Prometheus. Pretty much agree with what you said about Prometheus as well. Keep cranking them out, man! 🤘
of course you dressed for the occasion^^ this was a very well researched and comprehensive video so there is nothing much I can add other than: Ihsahn is one of my alltime favourite artists and his self-titled solo band put out some of my favourite albums ever. this unique (at the time) style of progressive black metal broadened my horizon and had a huge influence on me.
i found emperor out during my teenage years during highschool thanks to my friend this and mayhem, man it was a great into the more genres of metal. great video man nice to see as i chill at the night.
My personal favorite album of theirs is Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk. I do really like IX Equilibrium though, I like the clean singing especially on An Elegy Of Icaros. Of course I like In The Nightside Eclipse a lot too. I listen mostly to Live At Wacken Open Air 2006 and Anthems with With Strength I Burn and Into The Infinity Of Thoughts being my favorite tracks. I don't listen to Prometheus much however.
First time i got to be this early. Watching on tv and opened this vid on my phone just to say we love you wyatt! Dope channel man keep going. Can you do gorgoroth next?
ngl, this video got me into emperor, ive listened so far to in the nightside eclipse, self titled ep and wrath of the tyrant demo and im liking it a lot, im gonna listen to anthems soon.
Great summary for one of my favorite Black metal bands. Listen to them and other symphonic black metal like Odium, Vargrav at the time. This subgenre does really fit for Winter.
Mortiis still played on the "Emperor" and "As the Shadows Rise" Eps as they were both recorded during the same recording sessions in late 92 and left after the recordings.
Loved the video! Emperor was my gateway into black metal. Could you do a video on explaining Panopticon Aka Austin Lunn? I feel like there's no one that talks about his amazing blend of americana folk and black metal.
M.E🩻 ~ I bought one of their tshirts from the store and that’s when I heard about them ~ (somewhat new to metal) There probably one song I didn’t like in each album for Emperor. Good video btw.
My most favorite black metal band. Strange though that they are not the band that made my favorite album. My favorite black metal album is "Verwüstung - Invoke the Dark Age" by Abigor. Emperor to me is the quintessential black metal band.
From what I've researched In Longing Spirit was never re-recorded and Emperor is one of my favorite bands so I'm pretty sure I'm most likely right. I wish there were two versions. That's one of my absolute favorite songs by them.
Glad you made the point about redemption, I get a lot of shit for liking AILD, meanwhile you see people like the guys from Unearth, Ryan Neff, and Ricky Hoover welcoming Tim back into the scene. If you do your time, what society and lawmakers have deemed fit for the crime you comitted who's to stop you from having a career. To be frank, I'd be a lot more worried if violent offenders who comitted crime in desperation are released to more desperate and perpetual situation.
A bit later Ihsahn rekindled Thou Shalt Suffer as a solo project in 2000, its more ambient neo-classical style than metal, pretty intense stuff a bit reminiscent of the split with Thorns. Also a big fan of Peccatum. Like Skinny Puppy I hardly listen to them anymore, and when I do its usually Prometheus. But its safe to say from 15-25 they were one of the bands I would listen to the most. It wasn't that controversial when he played, that's more of a view from the rear view mirror. I do recognize the importance of this discussion, but yeah metal heads mostly didn't really care back then.
It should be mentioned that the song Blood Fire Death by Bathory uses a lot of keyboards, and to my understanding it's the first black metal song with keys. Emperor have stated many times that Bathory was a big influience on them and with this song it is very obvious!
Bathory already used keys on Under the Sign of the Black Mark. Listen to Woman of Dark Desires.
Damn, you even had time to cosplay as an average Emperor fan.
My favourite band is also cosplay
I love Emperor and this is my aesthetic when I'm tutoring physics and math.
I take this so personally lol.
He forgot to wear thigh high socks 😔
Wyatt looks like the local librarian waiting for that book you forgot to turn in.
I think that Faust is a living testament that Scandinavian prisons do a semblance of good to society unlike prisons in many other parts of the world.
Exactly. How America does not recognize what is going on just shows how stupid this country is.
I agree and think something is different about Northern Europe than America and it would serve the US to emulate it at least in the right way, since the culture is quite different
Homogeneity and high trust societies have their benefits. 🫣
@@youvegotmysong Aww the basement coward is trying to hide his beliefs with careful wording. Why don't you just tell people what you really think?
Wyatt your turning into a nerd lol, in all seriousness though those glasses look great on you
All commies have to have thick rims lol. Joking, don't cry.
Fr. 😂
Cringe

He's gonna have a phd in extreme metal.....life skills people don't be dissing the professor.
Love Prometheus. Such an underrated album
"When I say, lay thorns on my grave"
I was lucky to see Emperor live this past summer when they came to Dallas TX, my hometown. It was an epic show!
Liar!!!!!
You look like you're ready to drop the greatest Death prog album of all time
Wyattxhim is about to drop Whitewater Park, I can just feel it
This is incredible, I can't belive you got, the man himself, Ihsahn, to agree to do a video for you.
I love the whole librarian outfit style you’re going for man
Love everything ihsahn has done. Man’s one of those guys who just makes great stuff

Pd: The Majesty of the Night Sky it’s also my favourite Emperor song, such a great experience listening live
I second Abigor!
I think Abigor would be a bit too controversial wouldn't they?
@@patrickbertlein4626 He did DSO so no.
Anthems is an absolute masterpiece, one of those 10/10 albums for me.
Their last two albums are massively underrated
The outfit is class, just like the common Emperor enthusiast
Looks like Wyatt is cosplaying Ihsahn for this video
It's a tribute.
Show some respect you cunt.
@@MrCarcass1978 To who? The hipster Ihsahn?
Emperor is one of my all time favourite black metal bands, alongside Jute Gyte, Diapsiquir, Mamaleek and Gnaw Their Tongues.

I love Prometheus, i know virtually no one will agree but it’s my favorite Emperor album. It’s way ahead of its time and I adore that album.
loving the glasses and comfy sweater combo, very on par for emperor praise. you could use a bubbler though, or a little pipe.
Larping about redemption at the same time being a black metal fan is really something!
This made my night man, been waiting for this vid and it’s fkn emperor!!
One of my favorite bands ever! Witches Sabbath is my favorite song by them.
Very dark song 🎵 Hailz 🫡
Wanna follow me into the woods?

I consider the 3rd and 4th album as pre-Ihsahn solo work. Prometheus should be counted as such for sure
Those glasses are great man. Reminds me of the serial killers of the 70s vibe.

gotta add some emperor to my vinyl collection soon. I feel like a criminal for not having nightside already
Emperor was the absolute best... still amazing to listen. Outstanding video!! ❤️🇲🇽❤️
mmm yess wyattxhim intriguing yes mmm quiet
I honestly think that In the Nightside Eclipse is one of the pinnacles of metal as an entire genre.
It’s fascinating how reflective Emperor’s lyrics were and imho that’s why they are my favorite bm band.
Ye Entrancemperium might be the best black metal song of all time

Redemption hinges on forgiveness, in this case, forgiveness of a collective. From a legal standpoint, he's already absolved.
Can you please do a video about essential black metal albums.
I am new to the subhgenre and would like to know your list.
Looking forward to hear what you think about them. I totally love the first and second ep, the debut and Anthems.
I've been in love with everything Ihsahn has put out since Anthems. That man's solo career is probably my overall favorite music.
Mortiis still played on the "Emperor" and "As the Shadows Rise" Eps as they were both recorded during the same recording sessions in late 92 and left after the recordings.

Warriors for the win get out of here! Also, no one talks about Panopticon? PFFFTTT. KID!! Wrong, one of the most talked about bands today, easily.
I really want to see Explaining Thorns, Windir or Arckanum
I saw Emperor live in June in Brooklyn. Awesome show
dude out here dressing like ihsahn, that's most definitely what's up
Thank you. I was having a horrible time finding the key to this Door.
My favourite moment in all of music may be around 4:46 into The Acclamation Of Bonds. And agreed, The Majesty Of The Nightsky is huge!
Anthems is a god damned masterpiece and I’ll never be swayed on the matter. The song writing on that album is genius
Bro I knew it 😆.
Do windir next.
Professor Wyatt I love these videos
I once found myself at an emperor show at the bb king blues club in New York city back in 2007 🤘🏻
Saw them last year in Bogotá and they'll be returning in 2024. Looking forward to catch them live again!
It’s weird but my favorite stuff by them are their early eps
amazing band
love the look you went for lol
Please do a video on Xasthur. Would be dope to see what you have to say about Malefic and his work.
It’s only fitting for Faust to play an anniversary show for the album he recorded on
why are you rizzing me up rn
Love the sweater! Can I ask the brand?
Hell yeah emperor is one of the top black metal bands I've been listening to since the beginning 🤘
If I were to sum up Emperor in one sentence I’d say “Acts sophisticated and intelligent because they are”
very good video do you make music yourself ?
Anthems all the way. i was blown away with the keys and vocals. best black metal i've ever bought.
Emperor one of my favs. Anthems is a masterpiece.
As the Shadows Rise and Reverence are amazing EPs!
