Someone asked the director "What was in the package that Tom Hanks did not open?" The director replied "A solar powered GPS enabled prepaid satellite phone" 😆
My daughter told me they'd be watching this movie in her film class. I don't give her any spoilers on movies, but I said "You'll feel like crying over something you never thought you'd cry about." I came home from work the next day, and when I walked through the door, my daughter said "Wilson!".
So, Tom Hanks was interviewed about this movie, and they asked him about the ending. He said that it was open to interpretation and the viewer would have to decide for themself what happened. Then they asked him what HIS interpretation was, and he said, "Oh, he went back there and made babies with that woman." 😂😂
It's interesting that the Ranche's logo, the picture on the package and the tailgate of the pickup, are a pair of angel's wings. Is the redheaded woman at the end his salvation from all of this? Or even deeper, did he actually die in the crash and everything we see transpire in the movie was him spending time in purgatory, make his peace, and then being ready to come to the light?
I'd like to thank Wilson for being the most well-rounded actor in this movie. True global talent there. I especially like how he fought to remain a silent character despite what the producers wanted, it was the right call.
Unfortunately he got an inflated ego and because he didn't want to play ball with Hollywood's low-ball offers, he hasn't landed a role since this film.
@@DerekMoore82yeah, Wilson got kicked out after rolling up to the bosses demanding a big round sum of money. Should have played nicely instead of trying baller moves. He really could have made his goal come true.
There was a great Fed Ex Super bowl commercial, around the early 2000's..Show's the Fed Ex driver (supposed to be Hanks character, Hair and beard, and all) drive's up to the house with the package..Goes to the door, lady answers, and he tell's her he was stuck on an island for 5 years, and held onto her package because he work's for Fed Ex, and wanted to make sure she got it. She thanks him, he turns to leave, then turns back. Curious, he asks her "BTW, what's in the package?..She takes out a bunch survival items! Satellite phone, GPS locator, fishing rod, water purifier, and some seeds. "Not much. Just some silly stuff", then closes the door..Funny as hell!
"Shut the fuck up. They ain't taking this man's volleyball from him." Sir, I love you. And it's true: we all laughed at the beginning when he was talking to Wilson. But when he at last loses him (which is probably for the best since he makes it home), it is truly heartbreaking.

The whole "ice in my glass" speech is one of those "Tom Hanks grabs your guts in the final minutes" moments. He's got one in lots of different movies. "Is he smart or is he..." from Forrest Gump (or the speech at Jenny's grave), the medical examination at the end of Captain Phillips, the "Holy Grail 'neath ancient Roslyn waits" at the end of DaVinci Code... There was a rumor running around for years after this movie came out saying there was a waterproof, solar powered, satellite cell phone in that package. What was actually in the packages was some home made salsa the woman (Bettina) made for her husband (Dick). There was also a letter to her husband talking about how she knows their life is boring and wants to work things out. With the included the salsa in there she was telling him she sent him a taste of home and to come home to her and wants to bring back the spice in their lives. Also of you pay attention to the archway sign at her house in the beginning of the movie you will see it has "Dick & Bettina" on it. At the end of the movie when Chuck finally delivers the package her husband's name has been torn off the sign.
The watch, Wilson, and the package are 3 key items of the film The watch with Kelly's picture was what kept him motivated to keep going. Wilson was what kept him sane with it's companionship due to him being isolated on the island by himself. The package gave him hope and a reason to get off the island to deliver it. Those 3 items also can intertwine with each other with each of their symbols of him being on the island and to get off it .
The fact he has to give up Wilson to be free of the island makes the movie. He has to mourn the part of himself he used to survive there, and let go of it before he can return to society again
I saw this in the theater with my dad when I was 17 or so. A Saturday matinee. My mom stayed home because we knew it wouldn’t be her kind of movie. We basically walked out of the theater and drove home in silence, such was the impact of this film. It was the same exact thing with the Green Mile a year earlier. We were both basically trying to be manly and not to cry and just saying stuff like”that was a helluva movie, wasn’t it?” The mid 90s to mid 2000s was definitely the golden age of Tom Hanks’ career.
I'm telling you, watching this in the theaters is the only way to do it justice. The Cinematography was some of the best I have ever seen in a movie. You actually felt like you were there with him.
The title of the film has duel meanings The word "castaway" does mean stranded, isolated, marooned, etc etc. If you look at the title though the word "castaway" is separated into the 2 words "Cast Away". Which means thrown away, cast aside, rejected. So for a majority of the movie he was a castaway on the island but at the near the end after he escaped from the island he felt like he was cast away because everyone had moved on with their lives. Then at the end of the movie after he delivers the package Chuck is literally and metaphorically at a "crossroad" till he meets the woman and she gives him "directions" and he sees symbol on the back of her truck.
"They should put Wilson in the credits." See that's why you're one of the top commenters around, oh and also the fact that you turned this whole movie into a question on when he would get around to wiping his arse. 😂😂😂 p.s. major props on the editing of these video posts as well; always effortlessly great. The industry's loss.
LOL just because we didn't watch him wipe his ass doesn't mean he didn't do it. From the moment you saw him stand up that first time I'm sure his ass was already wiped by then LOL. Who _wouldn't_ wipe their ass 😆. Personally I'm glad they didn't show us that part 😂
The funny and rather ironic part about you calling him crazy, is the fact that what he's doing is one of the most important things that is keeping him sane. He has created himself a companion, someone he could associate and interact with. And that inner voice that we all have, he gave it to Wilson. Having someone to be in that situation with, compared to being alone, is a huge difference. Without Wilson, he would've probably lost it and given up a long time ago. (Granted, he had in fact lost it and given up once before, but fortunately he managed to get thru that) I just got to the part where you finally understand the significance of Wilson's role in this ordeal. Good job man. And is there a better testament to the acting skills of Tom Hanks? How many actors could get you to start bawling over a volleyball?
I've heard (and read) some people don't have an "inner voice" - which is so crazy to me and blows my mind. I can't even comprehend what that would be like.
@@LadyBeyondTheWall No inner voice? Is that even possible? As soon as we reach an age that we become aware, and able to reason, that inner voice is there. Otherwise how would these people be able to solve problems, or reach conclusions? To think, is to have an inner voice. So unless you are an infant, or practically brain dead, you have an inner voice.
The idea of a rhino, a "pissed off orangutan", or even a "pissed off walrus" coming out there and attacking the guy would've been the perfect blooper. XD It IS pretty weird how there was almost no wildlife on that island--save for fish and crabs! But at the same time, this adds to the movie. If we had an animal companion alongside him like a chimp, bird, wild pig, or something, it would lessen the severity of just how lonely he was. Wilson really WAS all he had.
Coconuts are amazing. Food, fire, rope, hydration, a receptacle… As Les Stroud says, best place to survive - if given the choice - is a tropical island.
The movie ended with the protagonist having faced an ordeal and got back to the world. But was at a crossroads, and looking at a girl that was probably ready for a good man and about to discover she saved a man's life when her world came crashing down. And all he had to do was go down that road. But I love Jay saw she had a dog and heard Cupid in the air. 😀 I do love they gave you bread crumbs to a classic hapoy movie ending.... But you decide what he did.
If you notice, there was no musical score from the time he arrived on the island to when he left it. The music starts back up when he looks back on the island. Great dramatic affect.
Tom Hank was asked in an interview what Chuck did after the credits started, and he said "He went back after that nice lady and made a bunch of babies."
Great reaction :) to a wonderful gem of a film. Heartbreaking that they did not have them get back together but makes his telling her she has to go home to honor her existing family is so powerful....
Great reaction. Last year? Tom Hanks threw out a ceremonial first pitch to a baseball game. And guess who was on the mound with him? Wilson! It was being remote controlled by somebody off camera ,and Hanks went along with it. He was talking to it, and rolled off the mound and everything. It was awesome.
I laughed so hard when you jumped at the life raft being punctured. The first thing that came to my head was "if you jumped at that I wonder how you react to you farting in the middle of the night when you're asleep". Also the life raft didn't competely deflate because they're designed that the inflated part of the raft is inflated in sections. So in case 1 starts to deflate somehow that the raft will still be able to float due to the other sections are still inflated.
Wilson is like that one stuffed animal you had since you were two or three years old, and talked to every day until you made "real friends". He's like your pet cat that you talk to until one day you leave the door open for a second too long and he's gone.
Another amazing reaction to an amazing movie. It really speaks to just how good Tom Hanks is as an actor that he can make you not only care, but cry about a volleyball. That scene always gets me, having to choose between the raft (the thing currently keeping you alive) and Wilson (the thing that kept you alive and sane) is both a no brainer and absolutely heart breaking. Also Robert Zemeckis halted production for an entire year so that Tom Hanks could lose all that weight for the movie.
The Red bag that got snagged when he inflated the Raft was an emergency pack, which would contain the Oars, rations, first aid equipment, survival supplies, (torch, batteries, compass, matches, etc) an emergency beacon and possibly a radio. So fate sadly stole his chance of an Early rescue.
I love this movie so much, even though it makes me cry every time, and I'll never see crab the same way again. edit 1: Personifying something in the environment. in this case Wilson, is actually a fairly healthy way of keeping yourself from going crazy from isolation. edit 2: Waited till now to mention the auto dentistry. I knew it would freak you out :) edit 3: Don't be too hard on the new husband. He knows he stands to lose her, and his protectiveness is understandable.
I saw this in theaters and couldn’t believe I was crying for the volleyball but Tom hanks did such an amazing job of showing heartbreak man it killed me. Was good to see someone else get emotional so I don’t feel so rediculius lol great reaction brother!
I came here to watch you form an unreasonable attachment to a volleyball and then lose him. It was well worth it. The way things went with Kelly in the end is so tough to watch, but so well done. What else could he do? What else could anyone do?
When the awards season for this year came around, I remember a spoof cartoon for award category ‘best prop performance’ and the nominees were Wilson, the shields in Gladiator, the paint brushes in Pollock, and Julia Roberts’ push up bra in Erin Brockovich. But damn, if Wilson didn’t make you have feelings by the time he ‘died’ (I always call it his death scene).
I remember me and my dad seeing this, and we decided that that last package was the one thing he could've used on the island... hot sauce. Some kind of tabasco that he couldve had for them raw ass booger crabs.
2 minutes after making the joke about finding all the boxes and no bodies, he finds bodies. You then get surprised and freak out over said body. You're funny.
There's something so real about that situation of coming home and seeing your love with someone else and knowing that it needs to stay that way. But I also know that these two people have changed while he was gone. She grieved and hurt and found new hope and life. He found himself clinging to life and scraping for every necessity just to make it another day. That changes a man psychologically. It would be hard to believe they could easily just pick up where they left off. The ending scene is listed on Google Maps too. The intersection of Texas 48 and 1268.
Thinking they couldn't easily have picked up where they left off is a bit of a cope. It was heartbreaking. However good his life is with the redhead, he'll alway be thinking about his one true love.
@@meme4013 From someone who tried to reconnect with someone after a long deployment, its hard. Relationships are about growing together. They grew separately. She grieved, she moved on, found new love and life. It's not right to just throw all that away for a man than has been psychologically tormented and is finding himself in the world all over again.
@@meme4013 I doubt it. She has many good memories with the man she loves now. You can’t discard that either. And he would feel guilt for taking this wife away from her husband.
I recently watched a video of an old Australian pushing one of his teeth out with his thumb. He did it like it was nothing. I was shocked.. There were also some people in the comments that talked about how they did it after watching his video, and how easy it was. Hard to imagine doing it. But if your tooth is hurting that bad, I could imagine the feeling of removing it would be a pain relief. He also made a video where he did it again with a different tooth.
Losing Wilson was tough, but the part that really gets my waterworks going is when Kelly runs after Chuck in the rain and for a spilt second they have their lives back again.
I will say this is one of most interesting mainstream movies to ever come out. You have Tom Hanks talking to a Volleyball for most of the movie, and only one main character in isolation.
4:32 I vaguely remember watching a Russian girl, Dasha, react to this. And I think she gave a rough translation of what that guy was saying to those men. I can't remember what it was, but I think he was telling the crew something slightly different to what Tom Hanks' character was saying.

"They should put Wilson in the credits."
See that's why you're one of the top commenters around, oh and also the fact that you turned this whole movie into a question on when he would get around to wiping his arse. 😂😂😂
p.s. major props on the editing of these video posts as well; always effortlessly great. The industry's loss.
I feel that there might be a childhood trauma in this arse wiping obsession. I want to know this back(side) story!
52:28 Everything J says about Wilson is 100% accurate! 🏐💚
Kelly: "I always knew you were alive. I knew it. In fact, my wedding cake was a deserted island with a little figurine of you on it."
🤣🤣🤣
“My cousin didn’t treat Wilson like that.”
You, sir, are the best.
Should definitely check out the Martian with Matt Damon. It's basically the science version of this.
He definitely scienced the shit outta that 🤣
The funny and rather ironic part about you calling him crazy, is the fact that what he's doing is one of the most important things that is keeping him sane. He has created himself a companion, someone he could associate and interact with. And that inner voice that we all have, he gave it to Wilson. Having someone to be in that situation with, compared to being alone, is a huge difference. Without Wilson, he would've probably lost it and given up a long time ago. (Granted, he had in fact lost it and given up once before, but fortunately he managed to get thru that)
I just got to the part where you finally understand the significance of Wilson's role in this ordeal.
The Predator was waiting on the island but Tom Hanks never had a weapon 😭
"Dude, she got a puppy."
Facts. Whatever sort of person that lady at the end is, if she's got a puppy she can't be half bad.
Food, fire, rope, hydration, a receptacle…
As Les Stroud says, best place to survive - if given the choice - is a tropical island.
the ending he was literaly standing at a crossroads in his life.
I do love they gave you bread crumbs to a classic hapoy movie ending.... But you decide what he did.
Did you notice there's no music while he's on the island? Only as he's paddling away does the score start up again. Love your reactions!
If you notice, there was no musical score from the time he arrived on the island to when he left it. The music starts back up when he looks back on the island. Great dramatic affect.
Greatest reaction to Wilson ever. You were so sure that he was going to have him when he made it. And that’s what made it so much more meaningful.
Wilson kept his mind sane. Although, I think we all talk to ourselves. In a sense, we all have a Wilson.
If only Chuck had watched Scream none of this would've happened. Everyone knows you never say I'll be right back in a movie 😁
Hanks spent time with survivalists to show how people might figure out organically how they might surivive a situation like this.
In the online video game stranded deep, you can find Wilson on one of the islands.
Wonder if he will shed a tear for Wilson.
When I was a kid Wilson had me bawling
I wondered about this, because he didn’t shed one for the one-armed robot lol
The movie that made the whole world cry over a volleyball.
Wilson has the best lines in this movie
Wilson really said it best when he said nothing at all.
When he finally gets home and goes to sleep, wakes up on the floor for comfort,i bet his back has never felt better for not using a bed
Tom Hank was asked in an interview what Chuck did after the credits started, and he said "He went back after that nice lady and made a bunch of babies."
12:56 "All you gotta do is put it in some rice. Good as new." 🤣
The joke the director (I think) told about the package is that it contained a waterproof solar-powered satellite phone.
Great reaction :) to a wonderful gem of a film. Heartbreaking that they did not have them get back together but makes his telling her she has to go home to honor her existing family is so powerful....
you know you made it in hollywood when you can carry an entire movie doing nothing but walking around half naked talking to a volley ball.
Destiny or fate. Whatever you want to call it. All that happened to him, was to lead him to the "Wings" lady. Such an awesome movie.
This is the type of honest 'resting my tear-filled eye on the microphone' reaction that you know is real.
He washes his crack in da ocean, that's why he don't care about wiping!🌴
Hahahahaha, gold right out of the gate, "f*ck FedEx", and the head shake! And you looking around when the thunder rolled in, I'm💀
I knew it would freak you out :)
edit 3: Don't be too hard on the new husband.
My friend always said that Tom Hanks losing Wilson was funny. Heartless...
You know you've made a great movie when people cry over a freaking volleyball. Great reaction to an amazing movie!
Yeah put me on that crying list. Couldn't help it, Wilson was his buddy.
@adampare8088 I don't blame ya I get choked up everytime I see it as well.
I remember me and my dad seeing this, and we decided that that last package was the one thing he could've used on the island... hot sauce. Some kind of tabasco that he couldve had for them raw ass booger crabs.
"You wanna go fishing with him? He Elite. He throwin' spears and shit"
🤣🤣🤣
@@NandR she would have returned to the love of her life if she didn't have a daughter.
@@meme4013 I doubt it. She has many good memories with the man she loves now. You can’t discard that either. And he would feel guilt for taking this wife away from her husband.
@@NandR she'll never love him like she loved her 1st love, ever.
Wilson lived on as the official ball of the nba
Your cousin sound just like my cousin 😂- he got himself a Wilson, be leavin Jurassic Park early 😂
He ain’t just alive, he’s alive with toilet paper.
"F*** FedEx."
Me: "Oh, this is gonna be good."
“My cousin didn’t treat Wilson llike that” lol 😆
Alternate title: The Man with One Wet Sock
I recently watched a video of an old Australian pushing one of his teeth out with his thumb. He did it like it was nothing. I was shocked.. There were also some people in the comments that talked about how they did it after watching his video, and how easy it was.
Hard to imagine doing it. But if your tooth is hurting that bad, I could imagine the feeling of removing it would be a pain relief.
He also made a video where he did it again with a different tooth.
Losing Wilson was tough, but the part that really gets my waterworks going is when Kelly runs after Chuck in the rain and for a spilt second they have their lives back again.
“You’re the love of my life!” Lost my shit.😢
That was his pager he pulled out at the table. The look he gave her was basically “Damn I gotta go to work”
"That's not an option. I love me, i'm not killin me" XD
I will say this is one of most interesting mainstream movies to ever come out. You have Tom Hanks talking to a Volleyball for most of the movie, and only one main character in isolation.
"did he keep his job?" lol he was on the clock when the plane went down, imagine the overtime pay hahaha
I was never so happy to see a volleyball reincarnated! 😁
When you can see the entire Island from the top of the rocks, you are NOT going to see any animals. 😂
I never thought I'd laugh at this movie, but the ass wiping obsession, I'd never thought about. I'm still cracking up!
4:32 I vaguely remember watching a Russian girl, Dasha, react to this. And I think she gave a rough translation of what that guy was saying to those men.
I can't remember what it was, but I think he was telling the crew something slightly different to what Tom Hanks' character was saying.
I love Dasha reacts. She's so empathetic.
Dasha is too pure for this world. Her channel is great
“I bet he smells like a Detroit nightmare” 😂🤣😅 I had to pause it.
