I was at this Pinkpop Festival in Geleen NL. Where I saw The Police for the first time, it was amazing and I was situated not far away from the podium, so I had a fantastic view. And in 1980 I saw them again in Brussels, and after I decided if I ever had a daughter, I would name her Roxanne, and that happened 🥳 In 2008 I took my daughter Roxanne for the first time to see The Police in their reunion tour in Düsseldorf Germany to see the group who gave her, her name which she and I will never forget, but we will always remember, Thank you
We could have been next to each other and I was just as blown away by them as you ... but I named my daughter Ruth. Good story about yours by the way. Did you also get so badly sunburnt during that day at PinkPop?
I was there backstage with some friends smoking a real heavy joint when Stewart come up to us and asked if he could join. We warned him about the quality of the stuff but he didn't mind. Few minutes later he entered the stage and they conquered Europe :-)
That blue drumkit Srewart Copeland is playing here sold at auction in 2017 for $121,600. Hi Eddy, just sent another PM.... cheers. Digital Gold. Thank you for sharing.
Sting said that he bought that fretless Fender bass on a whim and used it live straight away without familiarizing himself with the instrument. Which led to the others telling him "For god's sake Sting, you sound so off-key, leave that thing at home!" He kept at it.
i was there at Pinkpop. Long Time ago ha. fucking brilliant band.. the best of the best... No question bout that.. thanks for putting this on.. Happy with this
What I'd give for more footage. LOVE the end when they're offstage, knowing they'd just nailed it. They won Europe over with this famous performance. A classic. Thanks very much for posting the footage. I've been a huge fan since 1978. Charles
WhiteWolfDief Man, I was there! They were full of vigor in the heat of the day (+32 degrees Celcius), really it was fucking hot that day and they played in the worst of the heat and kept on going for more than an hour and a half. At the end they just started the playlist again because they were out of songs - they were just a starting band with one album right then - and we, the public couldn't give a fuck as long as they kept playing, it was so awesome!!! It got heavilly sunburned during their gig, but didn't feel shit 'till the rain and hail came down during the gig of Elvis Costello. Man, I can still remember how that hurt on my sunburnded skin, but not minding because of the perfect performance of just another of New Wave's great performers ...Watching the Detectives really did it for me!
Hi Eddy, Do you happen to still have the original DVD or VOB files for the Police / Roxanne @ Pinkpop '79? I'm drafting up a doco about the band and could really use a good quality source of this clip... I have sent you a couple of PM's. Just sent my last one now. My email address is there. Thanks
😂😂checked 1982 with ZZTop before this and saw the picture for this video and thought before reading why is Frank Beard playing the guitar/bass for The Police😵😵💫😵💫😂

no way haha
Yeah that's right , biggest gig of your Career, and your gonna smoke a joint right before you go on stage 😁 what a load of bs
I would've killed to be at that festival. Rush AND the Police in the same venue!
If you watch both their sets, the police were better this gig.
Rush was quite a dissapointment, really. The Police was epic and so was Elvis Costello.

0:38 Sting realizing the size of the crowd cracks me up.

The audience didn't realize what 'coming' band they were attending then ...
Nirvana and pearl jam played there in 1992
I love how european they looked
The chorus is so weak live
One of the first concerts I attended Pinkpop 1979 , I was 15 😂
