He wrote this song when he was a teen; it is about the fact that his Mother left him and his father when he was just a young boy; he grew up without his Mother and it broke his heart. “Wishing for the arms of Mater (Mother). I think that’s why he sings so soulfully. ❤️
Wow I never knew this thank you so much
Deep
Wow never knew that,Thank You
He was 17 at the time
OMG. I didn’t know that.
This dude has one of the greatest voices in rock and roll history!
soul and pop you mean. Simply Red is not a rock band
oh yeah God blessed him.
For sure!!
This is a perfect example of "blue-eyed soul" music, proving, if proof was needed, that soul in music is universal.
55 years old ..... there will never come a time when this song doesn't give me goosebumps
Same! 54 here
older i get the more i love his voice...56
56 here...I think we love it even more because we are in fact holding back the years...
Couldn't agree more 59 lol !
Absolutely agree
The singer is Mick Hucknall and he's world class!
React to songs: SOMETHING GOT ME STARTED & FAIRGROUND by SIMPLY RED
The famous red hair
20 years ago I was at a concert with this guy. His song amplifier broke down and he asked audience if they wanted him to keep on singing for the 10.000 people. All was there to hear him and said yes. He started singing again...and you could not hear the difference with or without. His voice are absolutely amazing. Amplifier or not...he gave us all. Yes world class indeed
Would of loved to have been there
This ginger boy fills stadiums. Great vocalist.
The former Ed Sheeran
@@jetpark3743 Not to take away anything of the talent of Ed Sheeran, but Mick Hucknall's voice is something else...
Ed Sheeran is very talanted too but his music is more pop, Mick had more soul and jazz and that smooth soul voice. But they kind of look related I suppose.
@@ErikJan4242 Just referring to gingerness
@@jetpark3743 Sorry, my bad...
makes me cry every time-it's his voice and the words both
Music is the closest thing we have to a time machine. Certain songs can evoke strong memories and a sense of place as you recall where you first heard it. Decades later, this song is still the gold standard of expressing a vibe that is both sentimental and bittersweet.
so so true.. well said...
@billwoods9302 Yes exactly!! Every single time I hear the opening line of this song, Im right back, hearing it for the very first time: Sat in a taxi at the traffic lights in Amsterdam, its raining and this song comes on the radio, a d my mouth just fell open. Never forget it. Thank you Mick 👏
The name of the band was just RED. But once they were at a gig and the guy introduced them saying there name is known as "simply" RED. And the band liked the sound of that so they changed their name to "simply red".
Ok good to know you'll be surprised how these groups come up with they name
Having seen Simply Red in concert a number of times, Mick Hucknall's vocals live exceed all expectations, he is superb, and when he sings this song live, it stays with you forever.
I loved Simply Red. He’s so good. It’s a sad song about his mother abandoning him and his family when he was very young. He was holding out hope she’d come back but she never did. Sung so soulfully. Good reaction. The trumpet has a “mute” on it. So cool.
Mick Hucknall lived here in Milan, Italy, in the '90s, in the same building where the grandma of my girlfriend lived. It was a shock when I met him in the elevator! 😂
His voice is beautiful. Great song choice!
Thanks Kristy
Man, this song snatched my soul back in high school. Been a fan ever since.
"Stars" and "If you dont know me by now" by Simply Red are masterpieces!!
React to songs: SOMETHING GOT ME STARTED & FAIRGROUND by SIMPLY RED
4 great sounds mentioned above 👍🍻💕...great taste except the Arsenal bit ...lol 😉
For Your Babies is perhaps their most underrated songs and is also a masterpiece.
@@garymaidman625 oh I don't think I heard that one🤔
@@glastonbury4304 Mick Hucknell wrote it for his friends who just had a baby and it is absolutely delightful.
This song Mick wrote as a teenager about being abandoned by his mother at age 4. Check out his live performances at Royal Albert Hall. Magnificent.
Totally agree. I ❤️
This song is so gorgeous. One of those songs I could not appreciate when I was young, and then fast forward to 35 and damn this hits so hard and so good.
We don't appreciate alot of things when we're younger.👍
A fckn classic
Simply Red/Mick Hucknall, he's got soul for daysss! Not a bad song in him.
I was fortunate to see him live, WHAT. A. VOICE.
This guy has one of the best voices ever ! And this song brings back so many memories .
The voice and those soulful vocals are unmistakably Simply Red.
The man can sang."If you don't know me by now", and so many other songs.
What a production.
Bee....can u sang? Hehe...haha...now sang!
Mick Hucknall (simply red) the most soulful ginger haired singer to come out of England. Do some more simply red. If you don't know me by now, fairground.
"If You Don't Know Me By Now " is also wonderful! (For a long time I thought it was Dusty Springfield)
You gotta see the recent live version. He sings it so well and the audience sings along. Real classy outdoor event. Brings tears!
I think is one of the great vocal performances in all of music. As good as any of the great vocalists you can think of.
"MONEY'S TOO TIGHT", "SUNRISE", "IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW", "IT'S ONLY LOVE", "SOMETHING GOT ME STARTED", and "A NEW FLAME" are but a few of Simply Red's many hits.
Singer-songwriter Mick Hucknall and the band filled stadiums, back in the day!
Oh my god, this song has got me crying like baby. His mother left him when he was a young man. Man I lost my beloved mom, one year ago, this song puts, so much heartache, I feel every second of everyday, losing my wonderful mother. Mom I love you and miss you so so mush, the family is missing a big part of our life. His song says it all so well. RIP - MOM, you are truly missed do much. Keep up the great music.
This song is just classic. Doesn’t really age and is just awesome. I love it
Prince and this…..eighties…such good songs. Simply red. Love it. Little dude could sing. If you had seen the video, it would have shown you. It was his first big song….red hair in a pony tail down to his back. He grew up…tough. Loved motown…and was inspired by it. Such a smooth song.
Proving that, contrary to popular opinion, redheads can in fact have souls...
“Now I know his hair is very disturbing”😆
Love their
"If you dont know me by now"
Love it too. ❤️🇨🇦
Such a stunning voice! I loved this album
Thank you so much for doing my reaction I loved it so much and yeah Simply Red is Simply Amazing 🙂
One of the most talented voices in music. Still sounds the same today.
Ah man, you should have watched the official video. People are always shocked when they see him sing. He's amazing. Stars is a great song and If You Don't Know Me By Now is as well.. Love the 80s
My dad used to play this all the time in the early 90s when I was a kid. It brings back a LOT of nostalgia for me, and many other songs by Simply Red. They were in the UK charts a lot during the 90s.
I used to see a lot of concerts back in the '80s, all genres of music, and Simply Red is one of my all-time favorite bands. I saw them live three times and they never disappointed. As good as they sound on record, they were even better live. Mick Hucknall's vocals were always strong and the band was tight! In concert they took their music to another level. Thanks for the memory!
As people have pointed out, “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” is _likely_ their US best known song.
It was a Black soul/R&B song from the early 70’s, but Simply Red’s “Blue-eyed, British Soul” version is likely superior! ✌️
Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes.
No Teddy Pendergast is the best
@@otisyoung7061 ,
Yep - I think you’re right 👍
Simply Red's version is nice but the original is the best in my opinion. Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes with Teddy Pendergrass ...a very popular and well-known classic in R&B
Guys, it's getting to the stage with your reactions, when I'm enjoying your reactions as much as the music. Mick Hucknall is one of our finest front men here in the UK and Simply Red were an iconic band from way back. Classic.
Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes had a great song If You Don't Know Me By Now. Simply Red does a nice cover.
YES!!!
It's better than just a cover...it fit his voice perfectly...!
Check out the more recent live version. It's amazing! His voice is maybe better now!
He wrote this song at age 17 about knowing it was time to leave home. Bittersweet. Raised by his father after his mother left them.
Heard this song on the radio the other day, played the album to death back in the day, forgotten just how good Simply Red were. Spotifyed it and listened to the whole album, a most enjoyable 50 mile drive. So damned good!!!😁😁🇬🇧
They named themselves Simply Red because Micks hair is red !!!!!
Had the dangly (but, straight, brown) hair back in the day for a time like Mick sported.
Bald AF, today. If I had _just that dangle_ now I’d increase my hair by 400% 😂👍
The name is also connected to Mick's favourite football/soccer team, Manchester United.
I used to end my set in Madrid Spain with this song. So beautiful the reaction from crowd. Exquisite song. D😎🇺🇸
Great, mellow, introspective song of all time! 👍
Memories of dancing to this in the kitchen while my husband and I were cleaning up after dinner and we had put the kids to bed are so special. This whole album is amazing.
The band is called Simply Red because the lead singer Mick Hucknall is a big Manchester United fan.
Try "For your babies" its a beautiful song.
And he's a red-head :)
Trumpet was an usual pick for solos. Tim Kellett had been playing a ton of Miles Davis. You can definitely hear the influence. He used the Harmon mute, like Miles, to capture that sound. Beautiful & the perfect choice.
"If You Don't Know Me By Now" is the best of Simply Red! :)
I suspect you would love their hit
" Money's too tight to mention". It really showcases the versatility of Mick's voice. Great reaction!!!
Such a great arrangement and vocal is just money.
I cannot listen to this song and not have the image of Del Boy standing alone after the wedding reception having just watched his younger brother Rodney leave to start his new life married, I think is one of my favourite scenes of any tv, so poignant and such a fitting (and beautiful) song for the scene.
That tv show was very popular in Serbia in 1990's and I believe in whole ex- Yugooslav republics.
I love this song, it was their first big hit! Mick Hucknall's voice is everything and he has so many wonderful hits with Simply Red and as a solo artist!
Saw them in concert in Toronto CNE grandstand.
Blow Monkeys, Simply Red opened for Psycadelic Furs.
Floor seats amazing time!!
Wow his voice never fails to mesmerize… great reaction!! 💜🤘🔥🔥
You should DEFINITELY hear his song “SUNRISE”; will have you chair dancing; I know I do! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Sunrise is fantastic! It's my next favorite by them. Someone did a mash-up of it and Hall & Oates and it pretty good, it's somewhere on UA-cam.
This is probably my favorite song of all time. Every time I hear it my heart breaks and mends all over again. ❤️
This Song is Epic….💯
Legendary song from UK. So much nostalgia for this one
80s music hands down is the best from rock, pop, new wave , soul just the best
70s imo. The 80s was weird sounding
He was part of a genre actually called " blue eyed soul". Great song!❤
The original video adds to the ambience of the song for sure
I love to see you kids get your mind blown when you hear real music with real singers! You are getting the short end of the stick with the stuff you have to listen to today.
Love this song ♡♡♡♡
Mick Hucknall has an amazing voice. There’s recent a live performance of this song somewhere on UA-cam and his his voice is still sublime, even though he’s in his 50’s.
They won the Brit Award for Best British Group twice in 1992 & 1993.
But they had to share it with 'The KLF' in 1992. This is the only time this has happened. If you've not reacted to any KLF, then i recommend '3 a.m. Eternal' & 'America - What Time Is Love?'
Watch it live! Incredible...
My my I am here for this song I love love loved this so much from way back & man it is so smooth and beautiful. It's a mood I could get lost in. Turn it up yeah. Thank you guys🧡🧡🧡
Y'all said it I'm just getting through the reaction and y'all feeling it too haha I hear y'all I feel that too. Blessings guys
Love the song, love the reaction. Love their song "If You Don't Know Me By Now" too. Although you will probably recognize that one too!
Sunrise is another banger by Simply Red. They sample Hall and Oates I Can't Go For That on the track!
Yes! I just suggested that one; it’s fantastic
For more similar vibes, you should listen to REM - Everybody Hurts and Paulo Nutini - Iron Sky ( live from abbey road studios ) both powerful but smooth ❤️❤️
***Singer MICK HUCKNALL was a Rock Journalist who wrote about Music before he started making it Himself.
The power of being a couple and knowing each other. @0:54 that shaking of head by Asia would have made me believe she didn't like it, but BJ knew.
Amazing song and singer. Bringing back memories. THANK YOU!
🫶🎶🎤👋😀
I have the vinyl sleeve of Holding back the years signed by Tim Kellett (trumpet player in the video) and Chris Joyce the drummer in Simply Red! both lovely people.
Ur so right @Asia RIGHT in the feels…@Bj did u say they played this song in ur house? I’ll never forget my dad forcin me to listen “to what real music is”, & of course me being an angry tween said “dad ur music is bad” & he played not this one but another Simply Red song if u don’t know me…I think that’s the title & I vividly remember as it played I couldn’t find words to describe it…one of the first times I remember hearin lyrics like I was front row @ a concert….his voice is….just different & the word popping into my head as I nod along w/ u guys is “AUTHENTIC”..thanks for some good memories
everything said below about simply Red Is Right on Target. Voice like butter and some classic hits. 👍😍 You want to hear a smooth jazz vocal talent that will blow your mind? Check out the multi- award winner, Al Jarreau - "Sweet Tomorrow Morning" and "Take Five".👍😉 Love you two 💕
One of the best songs. . . . . EVER!!!
The first time I ever slow danced was to this song, the year it came out. My mother loved Simply Red, this song makes me think of her.
Love the reaction.
This original version wasn't the version they used in Love & Basketball tho. Angie Stone sung a cover of it for the movie! Her cover has a different feel from the original. Her version wraps you in warmth while that late 90's neo-soul comforts you. Mick's original has a more vocally powerful, contemplative, jazzy soul feel. ua-cam.com/video/xAoYp4K13Rk/v-deo.html
Love many of their songs.. Favorites are "Stars" and "Its only love
It was first released by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes in September 1972. I love both versions.
Oops! Wrong Simply Red song. I was thinking of If You Don’t Know Me By Now. (For some reason I couldn’t just delete my comment)
Heard this on the radio last night for the first time in sooo many years. Forgot about this tune and how soft and beautiful it is. Goosebumps! Had no idea who sang this until I looked it up just now. Had to go looking for reactions today! Not surprised you two love this! :-)
I danced at the clubs during this time, it was hard to describe, this is quite possibly the best song of the eighties, true, purple rain, wish I could do it all over again.
So many good songs from this band to listen to, hope you keep going with more.
fun fact: sounds better in vinyl!! :-)
They are called simply red because Mick Hucknall is a huge Manchester United fan ❤️🏴
Manchester fan here too 🙋🏻♀️
As long as Ole is at the wheel then all other Top Premiership fans are United fans :)
I was listening to this song when i got the notification great song great reaction checkout michael mcdonald i keep forgetting and bobby caldwell what you won't do for love
Classic!
Do his cover of "If you don't know me by now" he does it justice!
AN ABSOLUTE MUST HEAR,, SIMPLY RED "MONEY'S TOO TIGHT" (TO MENTION)
(OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
I saw this band live at least 4 times in London in the 90's. They are awesome
I was at his concert in Dublin recently he still sounds the same brilliant
Song that absolutely makes your soul cry for that 1 love.... his voice is incredible. I still tear up hearing this. And she broke my heart 35 years ago
I saw them at the Frankfurt Opera House in Germany and they sounded live like they did on the album. Great show
This is my favorite reaction from you two. THIS SONG RIGHT HERE😮… like butta!
You're in for a treat! ❤
Simply red are with out a doubt one of the best bands to come out of England and mick hutnall has one of the best soulful voices England has ever produced, his voice gives you goosebumps when he sings, I love their music and I have all of their stuff, their music is simpley brilliant
one of the 80,s great bands i grow up listen to. i love your channel!! from a guy from danmark!
The album this song is from, "Picture Book" is great, start to finish. Lots of good tunes.
SIMPLY red has always been one of my all timers! Smoooooth...lol I know right! I luuuuv his rendition of "If you Don't Know Me By Now"...
Grew up on this type of classic music and this is one of my favorite songs. Thanks for the amazing reaction.
