- A Mechanic Reviews the 2023 Genesis G90 The MotorTrend Car of The Year for 2023. But is it worthy of that title?
In this video we take a look at the 2023 Genesis G90. We start with a proper technical review under the hood then underneath the car.
Then we look at the exterior and interior. Then we talk about some things we don't like about it.

This fellow is the best car reviewer there is. This is the kind of information I want to help make a car purchasing decision. Keep those reviews coming Car Care Nut!
Nobody does a review like you. Motor trend is beholden to the car companies. I like the engine overview you do. I don't think anyone else on UA-cam does the excellent reviews like this.
Watch SavageGeese if you want to go even more in-depth with engine/suspension bits with interviews from the actual people who designed/built them as well and actual driving/track segments
uhhhhh
Agreed, great perspective.
Do not buy this. I had a 2021 G80 bought used with 4k miles and sold it after 1 year since it was so bad.
1) Front Headliner was not secured to the roof. I could see the plastic clips if i pulled it down slightly. How did this get past quality control wtf?
2) Panoramic roof would flex and crack if i go over uneven surfaces, which never happened with any cars I've owned. Dealerships had 4 tries to fix but could not fix
3) Weak AC that is terribly inadequate for Texas weather.
4) Rides rough and not very comfortable even with non-run flats. Granted I had the 20 inch wheels but still.
5) Poor NVH in general even with acoustic laminated glass compared to other luxury cars I've owned.
6) Gas mileage for the V6 sits around 19 mph 60/40 highway city driving which is pretty mediocre.
7) Just does not drive as well overall as the Germans or Japanese. You can tell the Koreans brands just arent quite up to snuff when it comes to driving dynamics.
Exactly. Wish he would cover some of Acura/Honda engines.
Just saying, back in the early 70s' Motor Trend named the Chevy Vega " Car of the Year".
Also in 1983 the Renault Alliance...
Lol omg I didn't know that 😂
@@montefiveforty1what a POS too, like the Le Car. First thing to go, le brakes
I like the Chevy Vega.😁😁😁😁😁
@@montefiveforty1 I got another great one for, remember the Eagle Premiere? What a garbage pile lol
The Door Hinges are designed to be heavy because it will lock the opening angle and stay there. No more door accidentally slammed into the car next to you and etc. also, if you push while opening the door, the electric motor will accelerate the door to assist you. If your door is not closed or if you are too lazy to do it, long hold the lock button on the key fob and the car will closes all the doors automatically and even raise all the sunshades.
Thank you for The Information ☺️
Only two things I disagree on is the infotainment system. I had the similar one in my GV70 and it was excellent. Fast, extremely smooth, graphics transitions were nice using the nvidia hardware, etc. Not sure why you're claiming it's slow or old unless it somehow uses a different hardware than the GV70 which I doubt it does.
Second is the leather, I really like how it feels. Maybe it's subjective. I don't think I ever had anyone sit in my GV70 that didn't like how it felt, which uses the same materials as the G90.
Maybe you should try other luxury brands first before getting upset. The European luxury brands are miles ahead.
@@jerbsherb4391 Lol
Because, it your own car
@jerbsherb4391 In what way? My SQ7 Prestige with the luxury package takes a back seat to the G90 in a massive way as far as interior is concerned. This idea that the European luxury cars are just simply the best is absolutely hilarious. Go look at the engineering on the gen 1 Taycan vs the Model Y of the equivalent year. The Model Y literally dunked on that German engineering failure so hard and for a fraction of the price. Definitely not as nice of an interior, but the mechanical side was years ahead. Hard pill to swallow, Koreans are coming in hot. $3k for a suede headliner or $3k for what should be standard safety systems on the German brands like Audi is pathetic. An Elantra has more standard features lol

I normally trust your reviews, but had to fact check this tidbit.
"Hyundai Motor Group’s new Dual Fuel Injection system comes with two injectors, one GDi and the other MPi, for each cylinder, taking advantage of the pros of both injector types. For low-to-mid speed everyday driving, the system uses the MPi injector; for high-speed driving in highways or expressways, the system uses the GDi injector. Such optimization of fuel injection type to the driving conditions has led to an improvement in both performance and fuel economy."
Which is the setup on the 1UR Lexus V8 in some markets. It's on my 2011 LS 460, so it's interesting how others came around.
I'm very surprised that he missed this. That tells me one thing...he didn't really research the ins and outs of this car before his review. And I actually believe he is completely blowing too much hot air on the door situation of this car. He even showed how easily closing the door with one hand was accomplished.

This horrible UA-camr reviewer doesn't rectify anything or care. He doesn't even bother to reply to his own comment sections. He left out the fact in the main title of this video here that this is the Electrified G90 totally misleading others to think this is the normal motor build on all G90s when the mechanics are totally different. This UA-cam sucks.
Excellent video. I've been searching for a resource like yours. I've talked to many mechanics with questions like these. 👍 Thanks
That’s something that was always very annoying in the auto start stop cars. I went and test drove a Mercedes a few years back and it was super humid that day, well the engine stopped at a light and the windows started to fog up because the water from the air con started evaporating. For the almost no MPG that saves it’s a stupid system. If I had a choice between auto start stop or a hybrid. I’d pick a hybrid all day because everything keeps working when the engine is off.
Not to mention starting the car 50 times a day, yes it’s stupid for sure.
Can you bypass that feature ?
@@icosthop9998 I dunno if you can on this car but in other brands there was a button you could turn that off for that start only. It didn’t remember it so every time you got in your $80,000 car that feature was turned back on. 😅 it can remember your radio station, your seat positions, your mirror positions, your last climate control settings but it can’t remember that you don’t like that feature and want to turn it off. It was also very startling every time the engine would come back to life when you took off.
yes you can by pass this feature on the regular G90s. THis one he reviewed here he FAILED to mention in the hybrid which makes snse this verson has the stop start fuction.@@icosthop9998
@@icosthop9998I got a weaker battery. It has enough power to operate everything except the start stop function. The icon for the start stop is now constantly blinking. But everything else works fine.
very detailed. Love you went into more info regarding the under carriage of the car. This area usually is left off 95% of the reviews. Thank you.
Wow! This was a GREAT review. Very informative. You really broke this vehicle down. Thank you.
Ive had 2 Mercedes, including the S550. 2 BMWs including the 750Li, two Jaguars, 2 Lexus, And 2 Cadillacs. And now i traded my S550 in and bought the Genesis G90.
So ive had a chance to own a couple of versions of all those cars. None of them were problem free. In fact, the ones i expected to be near perfect quality were the lexuses, but i had the most serious problems with them.
The Mercedes S550 had system problems saying the brake was on when it wasn't, saying various sensors were not working, and the windshield cleaner stopped working. Plus it was starting to lean down a bit on the passenger side, indicating a problem with the air susoension. Those are $10,000 for a set of 4. Also it needed brakes and tires. Seems like every year i was spending $2,000 for 2 tires and 2 brakes. It was expensive to maintain.
But the Genesis has a 10 year / 100 000 mile warrantee. That makes me feel more comfortable.
Goofy thinks dealers wont fight tooth and nail against claims on a Hyundai😂
@@dac33nr58yeah manufacturerws dont fight warranty claims, especially not Hyundai😂
@@antcantcook960 Not a gate keeper, just stating anecdotal facts which happened to my sister Venza and friends RX. never stated anything about how's better warranty claims duh.🤪
I thought people three year lease these types of vehicles.
@spook5756 A lot do, I don't. My brother leases his cars because he can claim it 100% on his taxes. I can't write it off, so i have to look at the actual costs, long term, and I've found leasing to be more expensive in the long run. I've only ever leased 2 vehicles out of 30 I've had over the years.
Dealers prefer to lease them because there is a lot more money in it for them.
To me, a lease is like a bad, long-term rental. You keep paying payments forever, but you never build any equity. And you never get to own your car. You're always driving somebody elses car and yet you still have to maintain and repair it, you have to pay mileage fees if you go over the alloted miles, you have to have it in perfect condition when you give it back to them, or they charge premium fees and you have to guarantee the end value and pay the difference if it depreciates more than that. And if you don't like it after a year or two, you have to pay more stiff fees to get out of your lease contract.
Look at how the lease is structured: The dealer takes the full msrp price of a new vehicle, then assume the estimated lowest depreciated value after 2 or 3 years, then take that as a lump sum and finance that at the highest current interest rate. People only look at the monthly payment. Since it's lower to pay the financed depreciation than it is to pay the financed full value of the car they think they are paying less - or they think they can drive a nicer car by leasing than they can by buying a lower level car.
I don't like that whole scenario. The dealer is charging you through the nose. They get all the advantages, and you have no control. You will be making car payments for life. And you never get to own a vehicle.
What makes a lot more sense for me is to simply buy it as a lease return as a 2 year old car. You're going to get a car with low mileage in perfect condition for half the value or less. Then, if you need to finance it, you can shop around for the best lowest interest rate. You have equity in the car, and when it's paid off, it's yours. You can drive it for years with no car payment.
Case in point: my last Mercedes. Brand new the car was $137,500 plus taxes, fees, etc. Somebody paid over $100,000 to lease that just to drive it for 2 years. Then I bought it for $55k 2 years later, with only 20,000 miles on it. It was virtually like a new car, but roughly 1/3 the price. Then I drove it for 8 years and then traded it in for $20k.
So, in the end, that guy who leased it paid $100k to drive it for 2 years, and I paid $35k to drive it for 8 years.
His cost per year was about $50k. My cost per year was less than $10k per year for the same car. I didn't have any lease contract with all its fees, requirements, and restrictions.
For me, that's a much more sensible way to go.
As everybody knows, the biggest depreciation is in the first 2 years. That's what you are paying for plus interest when you lease.
As for this G90 I just bought, a 2023 is $100k. But I actually like the 2022 model better. I like the looks better, (people ask me if it's a Bentley) plus I got the video screens in the back, and I got the 420hp naturally aspirated V8. Lots of power and no turbo lag, no turbos or supercharger to maintain over time. My Mercedes had to have twin turbos on its V8 to get in that range of power.
The G90 only had 15k miles on it, and I only paid $60k. I paid cash, so no monthly payments ever. No interest, no financing fees, etc. Just $60k. And I get a full 10 year / 100k mile warranty. It is in perfect showroom condition and even still has the new car smell.
If I own it for 8 years and then trade it in or sell it for 20k then, it will have cost me 40k to own it for 8 years. Which works out to $5k per year. Which is a very reasonable cost for a luxury car. And I won't have had to deal with mileage fees. Buyout / escspe fees, end-value fees, and all the other nonsense with leasing contracts.
For me, this is by far the best way to have a nice car.
But that's my opinion and experience. Your mileage may vary, as they say. ;-)
I like the fact that you don't let them get away from being cheap in certain areas. They are starting to charge people luxury prices so they should be treated as such.
Thank you so very much for making these videos. This gives the buyer a perspective beyond the looks and the shine of a fancy car like this one, before making a decision to purchase something so expensive.
Please make videos on Volkswagen Vehicles as well. Love your content. Thank you. 🙂

Other reviewers said similar things about the automatic doors until they actually tried them. I think the consensus is the automatic doors are great, because of how long the door reach can be. For old people, I can see this becoming an issue.

Great review as always! I’ve been getting a bit confused here with some of your reviews lately, and the reason like you said, it’s a luxury segment with opulence and bells and whistles…etc, so who (most buyers I mean) cares about calibre size, wish bones, cheap mufflers, and so forth…”Most” people who buy or lease this in this day and age, even used, would end up taking it to the dealership or excellent mechanics like yourself, due to the complexity you described, and that applies to almost all luxury vehicles. What matters here is you get the comfort and luxury you paid for. Thanks!

My 1983 Renault alliance was car of the year in 1983 😂
Beautiful car, but only a couple hundred will be sold a year. This car has 3 things working against it.
1: It's not an SUV (I love sedans, but the majority don't)
2: Not many are signing up to pay $100k for a Hyundai. Sorry, Genesis.
3: No real cutting edge powertrain. This should've been a powerful V8 or dare I say a full EV.
Having the V6 is going to hurt it in the long run. Also having sales in very small numbers means that your cargoes obsolete much faster as parts inventory and body parts disappear. I found that out with a Veloster that isn't that old. Parts guy told me it's the same with any models that sell in small volumes it's not just Veloster or Hyundai. If this G90 only sells 5000 a year for 4 years. they're not gonna make parts like they would for Elantra or Sonata. Buyer beware 5 years after the last of the current model is sold.
I wish there were more Toyota/Lexus reviews. Still, thanks so much for your incredibly detailed reviews and honest opinions thus far!

Motor Trend's advice on car purchases? You have to be joking. Not interested in reliability? Wrong. I certainly don't want to waste my TIME dealing with car repairs that better engineered, better constructed and better tested vehicles wouldn't have. Do I want to be conspicuous? Absolutely not.

I find it curious and a bit frustrating that ---this being an automobile -- there was no time devoted to how the car drives, only a phrase or two about its "opulence." Okay. But I did enjoy the thoroughness of the rest of the review. This guy obviously knows his stuff.

Well we have a GV 80 and pound for pound it's just as good as the top 3's luxury SUV's ! Plus you get a 10 year power train warranty!! We actually bought the extended warranty package that covers 100% of the vehicle for 120,000 miles for 2500 extra ! Try getting that with any of the others ....😊
I have a 2010 Hyundai Genesis, with port injection, a V6 engine, and it has been unbelievably reliable. Though direct injection would have improved power and fuel mileage, I am glad that my car doesn't have it. I like not having to worry about the carbon build up. I could not stand the original suspension, and put the ARK aftermarket (made by Hyundai) suspension that lowered the car by an inch. The original suspensions wallowed too much for me. After 176,000 miles, I have had a window regulator fail on the left rear door, the door locks on the left side both had to be replaced because they would not work in hot weather. I have replaced the front brakes only once at 100,000 miles. TPMS sensor went bad, not in the tire sensors, rather the computer that receives the TPMS signaling. That was about $350 at the dealer. Oil and filter changes every 7500 to 10,000 miles with full synthetic. I have no oil leaks, still have the original air conditioner with original charge. Spark plugs at 100K miles, and transmission fluid replacement every 60K miles. Based on this car, I would buy a Genesis again, but now, after watching this review, I may buy another used low mileage older Genesis. I fear the complications of the new Hyundai designs. I love the Car Care Nut, and watch all his videos, and I know he is calling it as he sees it, but there is no question that he is biased for Toyota designs, though he gave a positive review for the Mazda CX-5. He clearly doesn't not like the Hyundai/Kia hybrid system. He clearly doesn't like cars with only direct fuel injection (Neither do I), and he doesn't like there to be be too many belts that need to be replaced. Can't blame him there. If I lived close to him, and owned a toyota product, I would definitely wait in line to have him service the vehicle.
been waitin for this bt lets wait and see if they will improve in the facelift
This was such a thorough review! Thank you so very much! God bless!
If only we could get the Genesis design team work with Lexus engineering team, we could have something special come out of this.
Agree!
Do they have special engineering knowledge?
genesis passed lexus already in all facets. just go drive and compare between them. there's not 1 lexus model that is better than genesis counterpart.
@@joec.5009thanks for the laughs this morning 👍😊
Yeah but used all the parts from Toyota / Lexus
The "bolt" supplied to hang a wheel on while you line up another one or two and start the threads is not a new idea. My Mercedes-Benzes from the 70s-80s also had that feature. It made changing wheels MUCH EASIER. As I struggle to line up and hold a 235/55 R20 wheel and tire on my RX, I think of the "good old days." That would include having a MUCH younger, stronger body.........
True but I like wheel studs and bolts much better. Maybe harder to make them elegant, but way more practical
The design of genesis is beautiful...in every segment they have a car...they look beautiful
you are very a very detailed man, you are the only person to say Lexus lost it's opulence, agreed
May the lord bless and keep you too!
Great video. I watched 39 minutes that beautiful Lexus on the lift.
Can you please do a video reviewing The New 2023 Honda Pilot TrailSport from a well-experienced mechanic point of view. I trust your videos, reviews, opinions, & suggestions. Thank you, and God bless you.
QA to a next level. I don’t they will ever make a car that’s perfect for this guy. 😂 I do appreciate the videos. I would like to know what his top 5 cars to own.
Lexus and toyota😂
There are no perfect cars unless you have a childlike viewpoint of reality.
Love this kind of video 🙂 You did an excellent job covering lots and lots of things most UA-cam reviewers just glaze over. Your leaps and bounds over what most consider a great UA-cam reviewer.
This is because most UA-camrs are reviewing the standard model of the G90 and not this Electrified version forgot to insert into the title of this video. EVERYTHING he talks about here regarding the build & mechanics is 100% BOGUS because this is NOT the standard G90 build.
I'm getting this car. CLAIM IT!
Pretty damn thorough. Very well thought out review. Thanks for the video.
BROOO, this is a sign. Ive seen a few Genesis cars out on the road, those cars DEMAND glances. Beautiful and lowkey luxary.
Edit: This video was soo timely
Thank for criticizing this. I definitely go get one of these when they price comes down.
Love your meticulous "forensic examination" style.Really interesting.
He forgot to put in the title this is the Electrified version of the car. So ALL the mechanics he talks about here does not apply to the majority of the standard made G90s AT ALL.
Chrysler was going to 48 volts and it was a pretty good sounding idea - the good news - there goes the alternator but instead you get - I think is it a generator at works in both directions - charge and boost power. It works well BUT my reading is that that alternators came along as generators were very expensive.
A generator that works in both directions? Soo an alternator.
@@philipparana9225 Alternators (AC vs DC); but alternators are smaller, simpler, more efficient for reason someone else might have to answer. My impression was that AC is "not ideal" but it was far less expensive and smaller.
Six figures for a Genesis, you're having a laugh.
Great technical assessment, thank you as ever.
Have you reviewed the 2018 Genesis G90 Ultimate 5.0 V8 two wheel drive? If so, what major problems should I expect in the next 50K miles? I just bought one with 50K miles in seemingly like new condition. I did not want the V6 Turbo and AWD so as to hopefully have fewer major problems.
I own a 2017 Genesis G90 5.0 Htrac Ultimate, love driving it. Lowers my blood pressure everytime I start it up. The 5.0 Tau engine is a beast, this engine will easily do 500k miles with rountine service. Just make sure you change the oil every 5000 miles rotate the tires as well. Check your owners manual for every other fluid that needs to be changed. I change my own engine air filters, two of them every 30k miles, the cabin filter behind the glove compartment as well. Keep your oil topped up by checking it every 1000 to 2000 miles it takes 5w20 quaker state. I use full Synthetic Oil, runs beautifully. I am never selling mines, Hyundai/Genesis stop producing their naturally aspirated v8 engines. On a long stretch of straight smooth road I've had mines up to 140MPH could not hear any outside noise, moving like a jet on the road.
@@MrT-nh6di - I agree. I hate to get out of my 2018 G90. I absolutely love it. smooth quiet powerful luxurious and a pleasure to drive. And looks impressive too! Thanks for the information. The best bang for the buck I could find. I wanted the weight (almost 5,000 lbs.) and long wheelbase (124") for the smooth ride. And yes, the 2023 G90 no longer is available with the V8 and too complicated with the twin turbo and 48V supercharger.
Genesis is amazing
Thank you for the review!
Well, here is another vehicle that I will cross off my list. Thanks for a very informative video. Please keep up the good work.
I hope you took notice this is the RARE "Electrified" version of the G90s and not the standard build of the majority of G90s being sold. This title on this video was misleading. The regular standard G90's motors are not anything like this review.
Impressive car, impressive review, Sir.
Very informative!🤺
So what is charging the 48v batt? The E supercharger is also the alternator, or it has a seperate alternator? He didn't mention regenerative braking and that would be the only thing to make it worthwhile. I can't see the point of the weight of the batt, electric motor and belt just to lose a starter motor and 12v batt.. have so much drag on engine and a bit of extra throttle response.
We are so keeping our 2022 Tacoma and 2019 Corolla hatch for as long as possible.
I would too, my Taco is 09’ 150k they go forever. I wanted a Tundra but not the damn V6, the 8 was way better. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it right 🐾✌️🇺🇸
You won't see it with Sonata but when Hyundai sold Azura they had the most comfortable ride and not so good responsibility. It's a Korean luxury car culture and I don't think Hyundai will ever give up on soft ride. Perfect for people who drive for long periods of time or has a chaffeur.
The thing is, they got so many tech. from BMW designer since last decade to create Genesis brand and some are complaining Genesis can't make smooth ride like Mercedes cause the gene is from BMW. So, neither can't be a smooth ride or exotic ride. But, many reviewers give good scores on Genesis vehicle ride, so it depends on personal preference
U are the best!!! Can u plz make a review to Dodge ram 1500 5 gen plz?🙏
Please , I'd greatly appreciate a review of the Genesis GV80, trying to decide whether to get a GV80 or Lexus RX or RX Hybrid. Thank you sir and God bless you. Hello, from Miami, Fl.
Great looking car for sure.
Great views! Can you please review some VW or Audi models, I know that plenty of people would be very keen that have your excellent reviews dive deep into the world of Volkswagen Group of cars!
Funny
Nice review. I'll take 2.
Thank you for another great review. However, I feel you have some bias towards other brands other then Toyota and Lexus. Yes Toyota and Lexus are very nice reliable cars but I don’t think the other brands are far off the cliff. I have not seen one review where you recommend any car besides Toyota and Lexus. Let me know if I’m wrong
He's recommended Hondas.
On the surface, this is a very nice car. That is about the only good thing I can say about these.
I'm sure this car would make it's driver feel good. Taking care of it after tens of thousands of miles will probably make the driver feel poor.
Excellent review and you are right. I would never pay six figures for a Hyundai anything. Will stick with my BMW and Mercedes because brand recognition matters in this segment. Hyundai is losing ground every day to BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Porsche here in South Korea since the government signed a new EU trade deal years ago that removed extra taxes, fees and tariffs on imports.
price matters. try maintaining that bmw and mercedes
@@marvelv212 Great point. I have been maintaining them. Not so expensive when you’re an executive with an automotive engineering background and likes to work on vehicles. Of course, if I couldn’t afford the maintenance, I would not have brought it because some services/repairs will always be done by the stealership. Mainly because it’s not cost effective to invest in specialized tools for a onetime job.
