A Screaming Deal at $100k | 2023 Genesis G90 Review

  • The 2023 Genesis G90 is Hyundai Motor Group's most luxurious vehicle ever, and its most expensive. Starting around $89k for a non electrically-boosted model, or just at $100k for the E-Supercharger model, this is actually a screaming deal when compared to the German competition. Genesis did a good job with the first-gen G90, but this time around they've pulled all the stops. It looks the part, feels the part, and drives the part, so long as you aren't looking for an AMG or M experience. This is an incredibly fancy car with pretty much every feature you could ever want, without the potential baggage of reliability and cost of ownership woes.

    As usual Alex gives a great objective review. As a 11 years retired 31 year veteran Mercedes/Porsche Sales/Sale Manager & MB S Class owner the Genesis is so much more car for so much less $$$$$. I bought my 2016 Hyundai Genesis H Trac sedan ( if it was a 2017 it would be a Genesis G80 ) 5 years ago & its been trouble free , so quiet & comfortable & economical to maintain. I will NEVER go back to a Mercedes. Currently on the look out for a newer used G80 or 90 that I would like but don't really need. I would also love this new G90 if I could justify the depreciation on any new luxury car.

    **Redline Reviews/Sofyan is not gonna like that!🤣 It MUST have the "German" solid "thunk" when it closes or it is poor quality...allegedly.
    Of this Genesis, I like that there is no derivation in the design. It is purely a build over the previous-generation, just thoroughly modern. I liken it to a "stealth wealth" vehicle. There are quite a few wealthy folks that don't care about nameplate or ostentatious styling.

    I've had a Genesis for over 2 years now. I never had to go to the dealership. I call in to make an appointment and they bring me a loaner Genesis then take my car for service. But I like driving so I drive there anyways and pick up the loaner myself. It's all free. They always give me some courtesy stuffs... like Starbucks.. or some Genesis branded this and that whenever I get a service. Yes, it's a branch of the Hyundai dealership it shares the shop with but they really try to differentiate. As soon as I mention "Genesis" I get transferred to a Genesis representative. I have a G70 which is the cheapest model (although it's a fully loaded model) I still get the whole treatment. It's very nice.

    I love this style G90. I think the new S Class lost a lot of it’s exterior style. Too bad you can’t get the huge discounts prior to Chip shortage. The depreciation is likely to be bad on this but a low mileage 2 or 3 year old model might be a lot more affordable. I fell in love with the G80 when it came out. I was so Happy Genesis found it’s way.

    • @be5952
      @be5952 Рік тому +3

      Re: your thoughts about *depreciation.*
      You think it'll *depreciate fast?* Could be, but it seems the reasons the expensive German / Italian / British cars depreciate so fast is because of their *poor reliability quality.* When used buyers are faced with almost guaranteed overpriced (and sooner than should be) repairs, of course the cars' used prices reflect that. With them you do get that 'premium brand' cachet all the way until they go to their eventual scrapyards. And Genesis is still establishing itself, reputation wise, with the buying public.
      With Genesis's reliability (from what I've heard, read and experienced with a friend's car) maybe they won't depreciate like the competition? But as alluded to above, so far you don't get quite that _"...oooo....a Mercedes!"_ 'snob factor'.

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD Рік тому +3

      I expect it to depreciate at a similar rate to any $100k car. However, it won't depreciate by as much as a similar car you'd buy for $150k+. When I bought my G90 Ultimate, there were similar year S classes which were worth more, despite not being optioned out, and they had lost $80k-$100k from their original price! I can sleep well knowing mine could go to $0 and I still wouldn't be down nearly that much. If you look up 7 series BMWs for example, something like a 750Li is down 90%, or about $140k from new (in Canada). A 10 year old Equus is down around 75%, or ~$70k. I'm sure the G90 will depreciate like any high end luxury car, but when you're starting at $30k-$50k lower compared to similar cars, you won't lose as much money.

    Alex, you are hands down the best car reviewer on UA-cam, but like many other reviewers, you downplay the difference in the price to feature ratio between the S class and the G90, not to mention the disparity in warranty coverage.
    First of all, the bare-bones base S 500 4 Matic is $14k more ($114,500) than a fully loaded G90 ($100,500), not $10,000 as you say in the video. An S Class equipped with approximately the same features as the G90 eSC will cost you at least $150,000. Also consider that the S class comes with a 4 year/50000 mile basic, and 4 year/50000 mile powertrain warranty versus the Genesis's 5 year/ 60000 mile basic, 10 year/100000 mile powertrain warranty.
    The Germans love to nickle and dime you to death for luxury and convenience options, and their clientele is willing and able to fork over that kind of money for the prestige of owning a Mercedes Benz S Class.
    For those with filet mignon tastes and a top sirloin budget, a new 2023 G90 is a no-brainer.
    For those of us with filet mignon tastes and a hamburger budget, the trick is to wait 2 or 3 years, let depreciation do it's magic, and buy a Certified Pre-owned '23 G90 with 20k-30k miles on the clock for about half of its cost when new.
    The CPO program tacks an additional 12 months and 15,000 miles on to the standard 5 year/60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, and extends the powertrain warranty back to 10 years/100,000 miles (normally the second owner of a Genesis gets a 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty).
    So you will have a used car with a bumper-to-bumper warranty equivalent to many manfacturers' new car warranties, and a powertrain warranty that surpasses most.
    This is how I purchased my 2018 G90 3.3TT AWD ($71,825 MSRP) with 23000 miles on it for $37300 in 2021 and had 38 months/51000 miles B2B warranty and 84 months/ 77,000 miles powertrain warranty remaining.
    And it's how I plan on purchasing a '23 G90 in a few years to replace it.

Regardless, its nice that Hyundai / Genesis is hungry and is cranking out some value. The wings on the dash is okay. Dealership experience might limit it sales. Exactly right, and this is why I cannot consider a Genesis now or in the near future. Our only option in NW Arkansas is.......... and the next dealership is 100+ miles away. Whole sales and service philosophy from the top down is fleece the customer and give them the minimum possible. I know much more about the Genesis products than their salespeople do. I just bought a 2019 MB S560 w/7.5K miles to replace my 2015 MB S550. This 2023 G90 would have been a worthy option except for Hyundai/Genesis dealer.

      I will believe that when I see it. My local Genesis dealer is a Hyundai dealership with an added " alcove" that hold three Genesis vehicles. Same service bay, same waiting. There is not near enough volume of this brand to make a business argument for a free standing dealership
      As for the G90 the already slow sales have been dropping...with this new higher price tag I am going to suspect they will drop further is the car is no longer the good deal it was before when it was $25K cheaper

      To heck with Genesis's "stand alone stores". What good is that when the majority of their customers are pissed off and Genesis doesn't honor the warranty agreements? Go look up Yelp reviews across the USA that paints the true picture. Massive amounts of 99% complaints about Genesis dealerships service departments across the entire USA. Customers not getting loaners because they tell them they don't have any (which breaks the warranty agreement), the service departments not calling customers back, keeping their vehicles for weeks making excuse of waiting for parts, and tons of other complaints in regards to Genesis's service departments.
      Who care one bit about Genesis's so-called "committed to building a stand alone store within the next 2 years? Stupid stores is not important. Their customers are way more important first & foremost. If they haven't made the commitment to hold up their bargain on their car warranty regarding service departments providing great service to their customers, then they have lost their Genesis franchise from the beginning. And you are talking about a stupid building? Wth?

    I honestly like the wings around the gauge cluster. Screens have, I think, somewhat diminished the sense of luxury in these very high-end sedans--the centrality of the screen in the new S-Class' interior frankly ruins it for me, completely; it looks so cheap, especially with all the shiny black plastic around it. The G90's wings at least make the screens feel a bit better incorporated, like the LS' was before the recent enlargement.
    Overall, about the only thing I really wished they'd done with this most recent generation of 6-cylinder Genesis products is make them inline-6's, instead of V's. I know that ship has sailed, but an I6 feels and sounds so much more luxurious than a V6; I'd kind of thought they'd go full modular with their most recent engine family, as it'll be their last. Just the same; the EV version of any luxury car is going to make the most sense to most people who shop in this class of car. As a total, non-EV package, though, this'd be hard to pass up for any of the competition, assuming you can buy it from a dedicated Genesis dealer.

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD Рік тому

      I agree. When I test drove this one, I felt like at this point they might as well make it a full EV since you're not getting an amazing engine sound or the most amazing power (not that it's not perfectly fine for a large, heavy car). While there were a few personal preference things I didn't find much of an improvement over the last car, like the air suspension which didn't feel much different than the regular suspension on my car, the crushed carbon fiber which I don't prefer over wood, the new sound system that to me sounded the same as the Lexicon and the lack of augmented reality stuff they showed in the Korean GV80 years ago, I really loved it. The leather and high quality materials everywhere, even in places you wouldn't need them, or where the S class uses plastic/vinyl, the lack of dirty gloss black plastic all over the place, the motorized doors, the great rear seats, the high quality metal physical controls instead of cheap screens slapped on everywhere and the overall very nice looks inside and out really make it a great car. It's quiet, comfortable, it turns heads and impresses anyone who sits in it. It's better than a new $350k Bentley in some ways (except for the engine), and very similar in most ways, while costing less than 1/3 of the price. While it's not cheap, at this price you can't get anything similar.

    I love the "but the suspension and ride isn't as refined" when *they use the exact same AWD system as BMW* . From the same manufacture etc. It's brand snobbery and nothing else. Their opinion are just that, not supported by facts. Genesis also offers more for less $, use the same or better materials etc.
    Another thing to consider is Genesis vehicles are not based upon a mass market product unlike Toyota/Lexus or Acura/Honda. Many, well most honestly of their vehicles are. The 350 for instance is a upgraded Rav4. Same platform with diffrence styling and upgraded interior.

    • @halpeltonen2186
      @halpeltonen2186 Рік тому

      The AWD system has nothing to do with the suspension/ride, it has to do with how it shuffles around the power to different wheels. Genesis also tunes the AWD differently so you can't even compare that. At $100k this is only 7k less than a comparably equipped 740i which will have a better engine, better ride and handling. The 740i will sacrifice AWD, self closing doors, and the warranty. If you plan to only keep for 3 years the warranty doesn't matter since I'm sure both will depreciate about the same.
      As much as they suck, the Lexus LS or the (former) Acura RLX weren't based on mass market products either. Technically the LS shares a platform with the LC the (nicer) last generation Crown, and the bizarre Mirai.

You can keep the Mercedes S-Class, Audi A8, Lexus LS500, BMW 7 series. Genesis G90 my first and always large Saloon car to buy first. Any other vehicle would have to be a Bentley Flying Spur, or Rolls Royce Ghost. These Genesis are easily designed to go well beyond 300k miles with Rountine Service, Lexus as well.
