Earlier this year, Adam Savage visited Peter Jackson in his cave--his world-class collection of props, costumes, and cinema artifacts that inspired him as a young filmmaker and continue to inspire him. Adam and Peter examine a prop you may recognize: the faceplate for the Hal 9000 computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

legends among legends. epic.
Idk if you have adams contact info but please if you can let him know that the panda suit is not from just some commercial its from The Amazing Panda Adventure that came out in 1995 starring Stephen Lang, if he could let peter know that would be dope. It was one of my favorite childhood movies kinda sad shes just sitting in his collection lost and not actually loved by someone who truly loved the film. I hope you see this message, it would really be a shame to have The Amazing Panda continue to go Unknown and forgotten.
Daleks and Vogons
Way too short. Needs to be at lease twenty four hours long.
Whoa now. Whoooooooooooa. You're being a bit ridiculous.
Twenty-four hours is nowhere near the minimum for a video like this. I'll settle for nothing less than a week-long documentary of everything here, with in-depth history of the prop, insights into the build, and personal experiences involving the movie or show or whatnot in question.
Hell you could do a day-long video on Peter Jackson's Dalek alone.
Hell, I'd actually watch that!
This is probably part one, of many
We need a big trilogy of adventure discovering all of this. I heard this dude is pretty good at it !
Atticus Hahaha..........With luck it would be in my Christmas stocking.
This video needs to be called a prop "Hal 9000" viewing. Not a tour of Peter Jacksons studio.
yeah - was sad that we didn't see the dinosaur :(
Was just thinking the exact same thing.
Seriously. The gold Dalek was prominently featured in the thumbnail and it wasn't even mentioned.
@@spurgo
God creates dinosaurs
God destroys dinosaurs
God creates man
Man destroys God
Man creates dinosaurs
Man creates HAL
HAL destroys man
Dinosaurs eat HAL
Now we want a 2 hours video, thank you.
AMEN! It's a freaking treasure trove of movie goodness in there! Just wow
Yes cuz 7 mins on a damn camera lense wasn't to fascinating
Why? So we can spend 2 hours looking at a lens, a rope from Indiana Jones, and a shoelace?
Agree. I wanna see every movie & tv prop Peter Jackson has & wich movies & tv-shows they come from. 💙
I could watch these guys talk props all day! Please do more from inside Peter's cave!
all those props and we get to see like 5 :(
Can see a lot on those pics taken during the interview : www.tested.com/art/movies/588144-photo-gallery-peter-jacksons-movie-prop-collection/
"Adam Savage Looks at Peter Jackson's Hal Movie Prop"
3volved exactly. What a click bait.
3volved it's only part 1
Yeah, for as cool as it is, the Hal prop is relatively small and simplistic; I don't think they should of spent so much time lingering over it. Wish we could of looked over some of the other props.
The thing is that actual props, let alone hero props, from 2001 are so freaking rare that it's amazing to see them at all. Most of the props, sets, costumes and models for this landmark 1968 film were purposely destroyed by director Stanley Kubrick to keep them from being used in other movies. Recently the Aries 1B lunar lander came up for auction and was purchased by AMPAS for $344,000.
But I totally agree this has to be multiple parts - and I'd actually pay for a Tested sub just for that. I mean when have you ever seen Thunderbirds hero props?!?
Robert Anthony Pitera Yeah, more of the Thunderbirds would have been nice.
4:03 I legitimately thought that girl in the background was a human prop.
1kaaa Great horror movie-style reveal, though. :-D
i was thinking "where's that girl from" then she starts blinking and walks away :)))
So, moral of the story, if you ever get rich and have a prop collection, hire people to stand really still in it and then suddenly move.
haha you are not the only one.
1kaaa I nearly wrote this. Im paused at 4:03 lmao!! She blinked I was like oh that's a real woman 😂
"Adam Savage Tours Peter Jackson's Movie Prop Collection" -- What, he only fiddled with the HAL9000? That's not a tour! I mean, it is a very cool piece and all, but from the title I thought we'd actually get a tour, seeing way more props than that.
Nita Vesa part 1
Nita Vesa Could be a tested premium thing.
A 2001 guy here- Hal's "eye" was steady state and did not blink or vary in intensity. Also, the silver tool was to gain entry to the "brain room" but not to do the disabling - that was another tool. It's documented in one of my 2001 books that the tool was an off the shelf tool adapted for use on the film.
SHOW THE RAPTORS DAMNIT
ha!
Miish you bred Raptors!
Miish calm down Jebediah.
Ah, ah, ah...you didn't say the magic word.
PLEEASE!!!
the lady in the background scared me lol i thought she was a manican
Alex Strouse she scared the hell out of me!
I was just about to post that! Creeped me right out. LOL
Alex Strouse I had to view the comments to see if anyone was freaked out like I was.
Lol it's norm's wife danica, and yeah it was creepy
*mannequin.
Would like to see more.
no
they can split this tour into 300 episodes :/
Would you like to know more?
I'm from Buenos Aires and I say show them all!!
Yon can get about 140 photos of his props on this site www.tested.com/art/movies/588144-photo-gallery-peter-jacksons-movie-prop-collection/
:)
why is this video not abot two hours long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Steven Rollings trueeee
because two hours of messing around with a hal 9000 prop would be very boring.
FYI, I watched some scenes to confirm that the light on HAL does NOT blink at all. It's a steady glow as he talks.
Thanks for looking that up. I remembered it being steady but I don't trust my own memory!
I remember being creeped out, not only by that super calm voice, but the red staring eye. Never blinking, as if we were looking into a palantir.
yea the whole concept is the unblinking emotionless eye matched with the calm unnerving voice; a subtlety PJ sorely lacks in his films. which makes sense now that i hear he loves 2001 and didnt remember/pick up on that
Thank you for confirming how the light behaves. Much appreciated 🐿🙂
That wasn't much of a tour. More of an extended look at one movie's props...
Pretty much just like all other Tested "tours"
I'm going to need about a dozen more videos from Peter Jackson's collection.
ripvanstinkle there's more coming
Adam savage tours one prop from Peter Jackson's collection
Not much of a tour.
I'm sure there will be more.
Gerald5000 there better be, or else we'll riot!
When you have a jurassic park raptor animatronic but spend the entire video showing off a robot eye.
fuck ass off, HAL is way cooler
Damn, when you get called a "Fuck ass" you know the day isn't going to be worth starting.
I swear I was just waiting for him to move on to the raptors from JP3 and he kept on going on and on about the HAL 9000 eye's red dot gimmick, like what the fuck it's just an eye calm down Peter Jackson.
almost 2 minutes in and they're still stuck on Hal 9000's eye
2 and counting
4:20
Adam Savage Tours Peter Jackson's Hal 9000 computer from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Creepy girl at the background 3:50
What's creepy about having a cute girl on standby in you mancave? Wait - that sounded wrong...
I was pretty sure that girl was a prop
It's Danica, Norm's wife :-)
Glenn Vanspauwen
Lucky guy :)
That lens actually looks quite stock. The bit on the back protrudes into the body of the camera and one had to lock the mirror up to shoot. This was the only way they could do such a lens without aspherical lenses inside. This might also be why the flashlight seems focused as one puts it right up to the back of the lens because the film plane i.e. focus point is right up to the lens, only allowing for the shutter to come inbetween. If I remember correctly, Mr. Kubrick, was quite the photo gekk, and this lens was quite rare, so he might have had a say into this choice. But that's just speculation on my part.
He has the Panda Cheese costume... Dear god...
There's more
Never say NO to Panda.
Well, "tours" and "collection" are words that are maybe a bit too grand for what we see here. Let's go with "examins" and "item".
2nd3rd1st only part 1
This video should last 1 hour at least :C
The thumbnail was cooler than the whole segment.
great video please say you have plenty more of these. Id love to see/hear more on the JP3 Raptors. Animatronics last stand
and some V Rex marquettes from king kong ;) well if I was him that would definitely be part of my collection
Glad to see another avid JP fan.
Holy crap dude your channel... SUBBED.
JurassicCollectables I LOVE DINOSAURS
Ah thank you! I subbed yours back :D
Anyone else think the girl at 3:50 was a prop?
She looks around and walks off, pretty sure she's not a prop...
true, but i was staring at her for a few seconds trying to figure out what movie she was from, and then she moved.
She was from the movie called 'Life'. The scene is where a guy on the internet is watching a video and then sees someone he thinks he should recognise from a film...'should recognise' being the key element of the film. It's all similar to the woman in the red dress from The Matrix. On reading a comment to his thoughts from a total stranger, several things about 'Life' click into place :)
JD Courtney I have diarrhea.
her appearance was quiet creepy =)
Wait, did Peter Jackson just say Flesh light?
please for the love of god give us more of this
7 MINUTES? Stop teasing me... Would like to se a 2 hours ver!
or the peter Jackson cut ( 9 hours in 3 parts )
+Lord B.L Thackrey LMAO!
9 hours of the eye ?
There better be at least 10 more episodes
Omg, that's the panda from the panda cheese commercials! They're hilarious, I absolutely recommend looking them up!
Never say no to Panda!
PapaQ Turkish advert that won an award for its unique style. Love it!
It's actually Egyptian afaik. But it deserves all the awards it may have won!
Hey, your right, sorry about that. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Never_Say_No_to_Panda
There is also a full size Dalek.
I wonder if Peter ever considers that one day someone is going to have a collection just like this and they are going to have props from the Lord of the Rings in it because of the impact it had on them
How is that movie called from that creature at 0:17 that thing with a saw
It's a Scavenger from "Screamers" with Peter Weller.
thanks
Fakjbf of course, Lord of the Rings is the best movie ever made! I have a few props from that film but nothing major like a sword or anything like that. Either just set dressing or background props. But I'm dying to see Peter Jackson's LOTR props! They better show that! Lol
This made me almost cry. Peter Jackson is living his best life and you can tell it all makes him so happy
I really wanted this to be longer - there were so many things in the room to talk about uuuggghhh
Maddie - more is coming
It's not really a tour when you only look at like one thing
Feels like the tested crew was too in awe with the collection and forgot to record stuff. Too bad Adam doesn't watch Doctor Who, that Dalek is in great condition at the back.
Yeah, I wanted to see the Dalek.
1:14
You gotta get a fleshlight of some sort.
Good to knows Adam got to tour the collection, like the title said... Would be alot better if the video captured some of the tour aswell, and not just one item.. :)
Bjørnar Haugen more coming
I have never been so jealous of another person then i am of Adam right now, first he calls Peter Jackson his friend! Second he has meet Peter Jackson and got a tour of his private collectiom!
When i was nine years old me and my older brothers watched a pirated-vhs-version of Bad Taste with like Bulgarian subtitles so we duct-taped over them on our Tv because we couldnt help too look down on them because we where used to reading subtitles because we are from Sweden.
After the film it hade the "Good Taste made Bad Taste" documentary where you follow Peter as he shows early films, marquetts and stuff from the making of Bad Taste and how he and his mates made the film.
Watching that made a huge impact on my love of movies and sparked me too wanting too do it myself, sadly i have not gone on to make movies but i write scripts as a hobby and it brings me much joy in my other pretty bleak life.
Love Adams collection, love Peter Jackson, his films and his "behind the scenes" features on his dvd´s and blu-ray´s.
I think the general consensus is.. More please :D
James S only part 1
"tours" only looks at 3 props. I wanted to see the jurassic park props :(
This video is such a prop-tease.
Show me the dinosaurs!!!!
Show me the Dalek!!!!!
So with it being a Dalek there, that must mean that he's taken on the task of directing an episode of Doctor Who, right? RIGHT?!?!
John Smith I think it's already been comfirmed. But he probably had the dalek before anyway
MORE! I could watch days of this!
Not much of a tour but still a great video.
please tell me you filmed more than this
wow, very interesting but i think i speak for all of us if i say we wanted a longer video. Will there be another video?
Did I just watch Peter Jackson bond with Adam Savage over one of the actual Hal 9000s from Kubrick's 2001? Yes I did.
Came here for the Dalek, left with disappointment.
oAPXo Procrastinate!
Same.
Same
Please, tell me this is just a teaser for more to come?! Damn, I'd even pay some money to see HOURS of Peter Jackson and Mr. Savage talking and showing off this treasure collection. There was so much I spotted in the background... lots of Phil Tippet's stuff, the Zuul maquette (or actual stop-motion puppet), items from Stan Winston former conference room. Jaw-dropping stuff! :-D
So when do we get a full tour of Peter's prop collection?
SOOOOOOO much more of this please! This can't be the only footage you have of Adam and Petey Jackson
oh and by tours do you mean not a tour at all and just one item in too much detail and nothing else really covered at all? another great video guys :(
My favourite movie maker of all time - more please! PJ is a proper enthusiast's enthusiast.
I wish this vid was like 40 minutes long. What a warehouse to get lost in!
As soon as they backed away from the case and saw a little bit more of the props in the background, I'm like I SEE A DARLEK!
Well i was hoping to actually see everything... but cool video anyway
6:25 Beethoven bust from A Clockwork Orange
omg they are friends, how cool is that?
I find it hilarious that these 2 spend so much time on the HAL prop and are so intrigued... With a lens and a light..... Peter Jackson is such a wonderful talent making and building his props and steady cams in the early days with Bad Taste..... To see them studying this prop for over 2 minutes is just ironic..... Love it
OMG at 3:50 I though that girl was a prop until she blinked !!!!!
The specially made tool from 2001 is not the tool used to shut HAL down, but is the key Dave Bowman used to unlock the hatch to access HAL's 'brain' chamber.
Peter Jackson should do another exhausting movie trilogy soon... he really decreased weight when filming the Middle Earth stuff... look at him now...
I thought that girl behind them at 3:49 was a prop mannequin! Freaked me out for a second when she walked away.. lol
Tour? You use that word, but I do not think it means what you think it means.
I could listen to Adam Savage and Peter Jackson talk about props and gadgets and films ALL DAY
How is this video 7 minutes long ? I see at least 7 hours of talking material in the background. Adam you really have to do more stuff with Peter. He is such a terrific guy.
2:10 when the light hits your eye, Like a big pizza pie, that's amore
Edit ..... Adam Savage Tours 1 prop
Adam could make a display stand for the Hal piece . with voice activated light source . What do you guys think ?
Somehow LOTR wasn't brought up.
God forbid directors have interests other than their own work.
The rear of that lens is original to all Nikkor 8mm Fisheyes. There are only a handful of cameras that can mount that lens too, as the stem shatters mirrors in cameras without lockup. The red light is produced by the red filter that is on the side of the lens (screw on filters are impossible for this lens, so internal slide in filters are used).
Or you could show the collection instead of a minuscule piece.
The blinking must b n ur head. The light is stationary when HAL speaks. This is such a strong visual n the film. Such power.
Adam came to New Zealand? damn, would have been awesome if he did an autograph signing.
Could've come to Armageddon for a Q+A!
lordcrumb07 yeah New Stealing because y'all steal everything
The prop behind Peter @3:48 is frighteningly realistic… then @4:10… AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
0:27 I was sent here by a man that would have said a "wide angel lens."
Peter is such an awesome geek with a real passion for cinema. A true favourite director.
A Dalek!
This should have been titled "Adam looks at HAL prop for 5 minutes"
Tour? More like a super infocus documentary about a plate with a light on it.
Nikon fan here: The extended back of the lens was actually needed for the lens to work properly. It was only compatible with cameras with proper mechanical mirror lock up, like F3 or F4. Today you can easily use the lens on a mirrorless cameras like Z6 or Z7 or any other using the right adaptor.
more excited about seeing his prop collection than meeting Peter Jackson?
Mugiwara Ricky well Adam did say he was his friend.
on the speaker holes.. the original in the film in the control room is
18 x 24 = 432 and painted in silver
Peter Jacksons 'original hero prop' is
12 x 28 = 336 (with black paint on the speaker grill.. so it is from the ''space suit room'')
so they must have had several versions made for the movie
Of all the props you could've spent time on, you tediously fiddle with the most uninteresting one for the entire 7 minute video...? My light switch does more than that shitty Hal prop! Some tour... Cmon! 😆
I could live in that room for the rest of my life and still be fully entertained by all the pieces in there
I love how quickly Adam has a flashlight ready
Peter needs to get back out there and start Silmarilion, he's starting to get a bit soft in parts again, lol. sorry Mr Jackson.
Hey look; a room full of awesome iconic movie props. ERRRRMAGERRRD A RAD LERT BERRRRBBBB!!!!!!
Not quite a "tour", though.... :-(
A whole house of props and all you can talk about is one.
Gotta grab that fleshlight!
Frank ... so I'm not the only one who heard that.
Frank New Zealand accent
kevin Rudd Wow really? I totally had zero idea.
Frank well now you know, little guy!!#LackOfADickMakesYouSadAndPathetic
Inside Peter Jacksons entire collection and you spend the video on one damn thing? The thumbnail even looks more exciting
All this magnificent stuff and I am watching a little red light threw camera lens for over half the run time..... Unusual choices have been made
Am I the only one who sees the Dalek? My respect for Peter Jackson just went way up.
Yes we would like to see so much more. Unbelievable collection
I hope we get to see a proper tour of the collection in an upcoming video.
