Thanks for all your vids. Live in NE USA. Very informative. Just received a H5 G3 All Season. Have a H9 G4 in my powerboat. Now I can use my summer Autocharts on hard water. Using the H5 AS on a Hobie i9 Mirage for hike-in remote lakes in Adirondacks/just leave in case with open water transducer. Charting those too. Telling you because if anyone knows how great this is, it's YOU!
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.
I bought a Helix 7 this summer with chirp and mega (all I could find) and paired it with a 19 AH LiPo battery. Just converted it for ice fishing using a Genz box.
This video was perfect for me, I’m expecting a boat delivery any day now and I’m considering the helix options, so thank you very much for this video! I want to be able to network so it sounds like the 7 is the way to go. I have a garmin striker 4 for my ice fishing and I love it, but I definitely want a larger screen for the new boat.
Thanks again for the info. I was looking at the Humminbirds a few months ago until I realized there was almost nothing available. I gave up. Do You have a opinion on when will they be back in stock, or when is a good time to buy, sale prices. Also Sept, Oct, Nov is the time for real Jumbo Perch in Lake WA. If you every do a video there let me know and I'll send you a map. Robin
I've been waiting for this video. Currently I use a Hawkeye fish finder which is a really inexpensive unit made for Hawkeye Electronis based in Florida. I bought it because of it's light weight and size. It can fit in your shirt pocket and runs on four triple A batteries. I have a Vexilar which I'm probably going to sell because of it weigh (and noice), although the lead acid sealed battery was part of the problem as far as weigh goes. Last fall I bought a Vexilar lithium battery which was half the weigh of the lead/acid sealed battery, but ended up using it with the Hawkeye instead ice fishing. I'm probabably going to get the Helix 5 for my boat because of the bigger and brighter screen. I'm also going to put a bow mount MinnKota with the Navigator and spot lock on my boat. If the Helix 7 could network it's GPS with that of the MinnKota then I'm intrigued. So, if you could show us how it works with your Autopilot which is a MinnKota, that would be great.
I really only recommend SI for folks that are seeking out structure and associated fish. I know some folks have used it to located schools of suspended trout and salmon but that application is more limited. I find basic sonar and down imaging meets my needs 95% of the time.
The mega side images on the helix 7 are really helpful to see structure. Kayak fishing for ocean tautog in Narragansett Bay I rely on it to find rock piles and then fish. Crystal clear (almost 3D) images of the granite shoreline outcroppings are spectacular on the helix 7 with mega si. If you fish flat sandy / muddy lakes or bays, it might not be so important. Check this promo video from humminbird, I do see images like those shown in this video. ua-cam.com/video/L3HYTI3wAjo/v-deo.html
I will be buying a 5 or a 7 soon to install on my pedal drive kayak for next season. 5 seems to win in every category for me except screen size (which is obviously the difference between the two). I was concerned with the smaller 5" on split screen mode how good or bad the visibility is on say a bright sunny day. How is the glare on a sunny day, is the screen bright enough? (So far you have me 95% convinced to go with the Helix 5). Cheers!
I have the Helix 5 with down imaging. I use split screen a lot of the time and have no problem seeing it. It is right next to my seat in my pedal drive kayak. When I get glare I just change the angle a little as needed. It is plenty bright.
Great presentation really insightful ! Unfortunately Covid did play its part on unavailability of the Helix 5, I managed to find one unit but unfortunately someone opened the package and stole the Navionics SD card and parts, good thing is the store substitute it with the Helix 7 for the same price... win for me I guess ..lol But where does the espresso come out ??
Great video, My wife and I would like to purchase a unit for Ice and 16' boat, I notice the Helix 7 offers all season package for $900, I would rather have the Helix 5 for smaller size and weight for ice fishing, is there a all season package for the Helix 5 or what would you advise?
Afternoon question I just bought the helix 7 g4 ice pack. My transducer makes a ticking sound when put in water. Just wondering if that’s normal or the transducer in bad. Thx for your help
What they do not tell you, if you place a memory stick whether, for a chart or any purpose, The Helix loses its water tightness due to the door being held open and the plug will not go back
So asked the girl if it was worth 200 bucks for 2 Extra inches. Without missing a beat she said yes

Thanks for this video. It was very helpful as I’ve been researching fish finders for my kayak and recently decided to go with the Helix 7.
I bought a Helix 7 this summer with chirp and mega (all I could find) and paired it with a 19 AH LiPo battery. Just converted it for ice fishing using a Genz box.
Couldn't agree more. The 7 is a boat finder & the 5 is a great ice finder.
Great review. You’ve helped me decide on my next big purchase. Thanks for helping me save 💸
Very beneficial video; especially since I am a kayaker. Thanks a million!

Go Garmin cheaper and touch screen
Perfect thanks for the help. Inloy the summer keep fishing.
Just ordered me a Helix 7 MDI gen 4. Waiting on it to come in. My first fish finder. (Besides Deeper.)

It depends what trolling motor you have. It has to have IPilot link
@@spiltmilt OK, I-Pilot then, if I can remeber that.
@@spiltmilt The Minn Kota on the Autopilot doesn't support iPilot link, right?
Thanks for the video, but the helix 5 with si is no longer available. Guess I'll get the helix 7 with si and gps
If you're eyes are not so good, the lager screen is a game changer.
Chickens! 🍻 Looking at getting the 7 thanks, my kayak arrived today 🤗
Congrats!
I have a Helix 5 SI that I use in my kayak. Rarely do I use the SI, a better purchase would of been the Helix 7 with DI
If you have a si model it has the di already
Hey Tyler, i have never owned a fish finder but i plan on getting one for next year. How important is side imaging? They are a lot more expensive.
I really only recommend SI for folks that are seeking out structure and associated fish. I know some folks have used it to located schools of suspended trout and salmon but that application is more limited. I find basic sonar and down imaging meets my needs 95% of the time.

Not sure what packages Humminbird offers. I would prefer the 5 for ice fishing
I’m getting a helix 7 on my dash and a helix 5 on my bow.
Thanks!
Thank you Shawn!

Yes that's normal.
Hey bud I bought a new hu.minhbird fish finder a few months ago and now it won't turn on. Any thoughts?
I would contact Humminbird customer service
What fish finder would you recommend for a10 foot boat fishing in rivers
The 5" Helix should be more than enough in a 10' boat unless you want to get a side imaging unit or have not so great vision.
5 a great starter finder nice small package
Need a link for the Milt merch
I had a merch store but had problems with the print on demand vendor. Working on a new storefront.

In its was used in sea.?
Do I need to get a chip of my lake or does it show up automatically,I just got a 7 helix
Yes but ensure your lake is on the chip before buying it.
@@spiltmilt any idea where I get them
What part of the US do you livei n?
Is this the helix 5 chirp gps g3 ?
No its a Helix G2 Chirp/DI/GPS but they all basically look the same.
@@spiltmilt thanks so they take the chip also?
Yes
Picked up one for $200 off facebook 😮
What is non networkable?
Can’t be linked to a motor
@@spiltmilt That's what I thunk.
get the bigger one even bigger if you can afford it.
put them down, stop shaking them, lol
