I wish all travelers (or those who have the intention to travel) were as prudent and practical as you two. Having a plan is so essential. Great episode, as usual, and so timely.
Your best part was "Time is running out". We do need to stay safe and be well, but we can do that anywhere in the world. We need to give into our adventurous side, especially if we are able to stay for a long trip (IE Portugal over the winter). It would be a heck of a lot of effort for a one or two week getaway but if you can do 2-3 months in a spot, just go for it and live your life. Cheers and Happy Saturday!
Hi guys, lovely comments and so apropos. I’m recently retired in Jan 2020 and planned to stay 5 months of year in rented accommodation in Portugal Algarve every year, as a single person, to avoid Canadian winters; but then Covid! Now booked first direct flight available in January, Government rules be damned. Have major health issues but self manage with suitcase full of supplies and Portuguese trip limited to 84 days to avoid extending to 93 beyond visa with limited direct flight options. Visa required now for Brits and Canadians if >90 but possible when staying there with address and enough money, but does one want the hassle next year? Now thinking about November and December in Florida etc possibly in 2022 to escape all Canadian winter as you suggest. Great sensible advice. As a Brit seems we share the no nonsense outlook to life, reducing risk but playing whilst the sun shines, at least somewhere :)
@@janebaldock7995 Thanks for watching we would love to be going to Portugal 🇵🇹 but think it will have to wait till 2023 🧐like you need to find something to do in 2022 just thinking 🤔……hugs 🤗🍺🌺🍷
@@ThisIsOurRetirement thanks for feedback. To be honest, had bought a townhouse in July 2019 in Portugal to be safe medically in own home for 5 months yearly avoiding winters here( cold and restricted outdoor exercise badly affects my chronic illness), Paying for house whilst trapped in Canada for 18 months. So when AirTransat started direct flights again, booked my direct flight to Faro. Home in Eastern Algarve, no car required ( better if single and not roaming countryside alone) Safe and extremely well controlled towards Covid ( better then Canada was in first phase, in March 2020 when had to return early because flight cancellations). So great to hear of your options but unless I am refused my ticket to fly I am going to be healthier and more social during winter. From London originally so not used to social isolation imposed by Canadian winters and nuclear family focus for social life for retired single people in Ontario.
When we went to Britain before the vaccine was available, we were like you… rent a car, stay in AirBnB, only go explore places outdoors and NEVER in crowded places. Always masked up and sanitising. It felt good to finally get vaccinated!
Thanks for sharing! yes even though we are vaccinated there is still this big Delta variant looming everywhere don’t know what a new normal will be , have a wonderful weekend Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🍺🇨🇦
Sounds like the idea here is to pay close attention to the news and to be flexible on your destinations. Try as much as you can to stay away from crowds and keep a close eye on the Insurance you chose. This is all great information guys as usual. Have a good weekend at the trailer and a great week ahead. Cheers!!!
Living in Ireland. We desperately need a sun holiday. We had a bad summer weatherwise. We were just going to book Lanzarote for October, now we have read the numbers are going up again! Our Travel Insurance covers everything except Covid-19! Very difficult to know what to do! Keep the videos coming love all the information from Canada. You guys make such lovely pleasant videos.
Yes we are all missing that sunshine 🌞 vacation but we are fortunate we have had some great sunny weather here in Canada 🇨🇦 but can’t pull that trigger either for Portugal 🇵🇹 without Covid travel insurance Cheers 🇮🇪 🍷🍺🇨🇦
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Try the insurance company affiliated with the Canadian Snowbird Association which, I believe, is called Medipac - best to go to the CSA web site. Medipac will cover Covid-19 but read the details.
I enjoy your videos very much. Not only for the information but for the socil chatting. I have begun my retirement planning early and really appreciate your videos.
Wonderful! we wish you all the best we took early retirement 6 years ago and haven’t looked back , have a great week and thanks for watching Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
My Husband and I are dual citizens and presently in EU. We agree with everything you say. The flights from Canada were super secure with safety precautions in place. We follow the same advice that you give and feel very safe in our travels. We have been here since early July and are presently driving from northern Europe to Portugal. Protocols here are strict but that doesn't bother us. We will fly back to Canada from Lisbon and plan to return to Portugal mid winter. As we are retired, we feel that we need to try to have some normality as before. Safe and cautious travels is what we want. Great video!
Thanks for your comment sounds great just curious does your travel insurance cover Covid and how does it work with our government advisory not to travel as that’s what we are struggling with 🧐? Have a great trip and weekend Cheers 🌺🍷🍺
sorry for the late reply... being double vaccinated our insurance covered us. we are back now in Canada and were super happy to take the trip. Did not feel unsafe during our travels. Also, just showed our Canadian covid vaccination papers and they were accepted everywhere without any issues.
I love your videos, and while I am not a big traveller myself, I am so intrigued by your exciting travels, and enjoy them vicariously. It has really made me curious about visiting Portugal.
We do appreciate you watching our videos and are pleased you have developed an interest in visiting Portugal. We are looking forward to traveling there again.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and plans on future travel...great topic! I recently spoke to a Florida snowbird who typically goes there for winter but is now giving up her condo with no plans to go back due the poorly managed COVID situation. Keep well....cheers, C
It is a very difficult time at the moment lots of people want to go South but in reality it’s not safe to go . Yes lots of Canadians are selling their USA 🇺🇸 Properties as well as they can’t go . Plus is it right 🧐 that snowbirds might take away the healthcare that Americans need as they live there , Have an awesome week Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🍺🇨🇦🌺
Hello from BC Canada… I can so identify with your “time is running out” thoughts! We have been in the “planning stage” for our Portugal trip for almost two years…. Difficult to continue to have to postpone our plans but our safety and health remains paramount!! Thanks, as always, for the great videos. So nice to hear from fellow Canadians. 😀
Thanks so much and we really hope you get to Portugal 🇵🇹 soon as it’s a lovely place , for us maybe 🤔 not this year but hopefully 2023 keep planning Cheers 🍷🌺🍺🇨🇦

@@ThisIsOurRetirement You guys are such an inspiration to me & I love your love and friendship towards each other. I learn something on every video. 🙏🙏🙏 Thank you. 🍷
We are just on the cusp of retirement and travel was/is a big part of our retirement plans. We live in northern Canada and although we love it here, getting away from long, cold winters is what we've looked forward to most. Not going to happen too soon, and likely we'll work an extra year or so than planned to let pandemic life settle into whatever it's going to look like. We also like airbnb, (and have one ourselves) so that will be our choice of accomodation. We ventured out of our Territory for a trip to Saltspring Island, for the first time, a few weeks ago. Stayed with a family member who just bought a place there. It was consistently hot and sunny(a treat for northerners) and felt safe and exotic. Lots of hikes and outdoor patios. So although not a winter break, it was a very nice 10 day getaway. We have a son living in Germany and we will wait awhile to visit him there, which is more difficult to endure than a winter without a warm getaway. As a northerner, I've been recommending "if you can't go south, try embracing winter and go north". You could drive to a northern Ontario location,or beyond, and spend some time enjoying winter activities like dog sledding,x-country skiiing, snowshoe hiking, watching for northern lights, cozy fireside evenigs etc. A winter holiday will make you appreciate and enjoy your warm weather destinations even more when they eventually happen.
Thanks for a really nice comment with lots of great options we aren’t really cold 🥶 folk but it all sounds really nice I would like to try dog sledding so maybe 🤔enjoy your weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
"We aren't really cold weather people"🤣 Ha,ha...my Yorkshire husband said that 35+ years ago when he met me-a Canadian, but he also said 'I want to live in the 'real Canada' (I'm from Toronto),so we've been pretty happy and successful with our northern life(James Bay,BaffinIsland, northern BC and ending up in the Yukon) It truly isn't as bad as you imagine for just a visit. Get a northerner to help you dress and you'll hardly feel the cold. But on saying that....he still longs for his green cricket pitches and a good pint!😁 Renting somewhere in the UK for a few months here and there is definitely in our retirement picture. Cheers, and thanks for your videos!
You both are so right, hubby and I fee the same way. We love California. If you haven’t done the 101 I totally recommend it, we did it a few times and hope to do it again soon. We just go with the flow, if we like it we stay a few days.. if not we move on… we found a little town called Solvang, loved it so much we stayed there a few days…Carmel, Palm Springs, Napa Valley omg I better stop or I’m going to cry🙃 We love the US… as soon as this is over we are doing Route 66 top to bottom… we love road trips to. Hubby and I love watching you both and learning so much! Have a great week!
Thanks for your comment and wonderful road trip 🚗suggestions can’t wait for the border to open they sound awesome, hope you are both well have a great week Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
I love your videos, Norm and Tina! You have such practical tips in this video. Sharing ideas. We are all in this together. God bless you both! Thank you. 😍
A road trip is what we need these days. Driving through the US is nice. Easy. Lots camp grounds. Also very easy to go over to Mexico. Yucatan beautiful. We drove 20 years ago. Portugal will be my usual months
My husband and I had a trip to Vegas that we cancelled in 2020 and we are anxious to go. We live in central British Columbia so we are considering our opportunities for re booking. We still work but I am retiring in January 2022. We have been using similar principles as you are. Great video
Thanks so much for watching, we have heard from people in Vegas saying to stay away for the foreseeable future. It’s frustrating not traveling but staying safe is important. Hopefully you will get a retirement trip soon.
Very interesting talk Tina & Norm 👍 no wonder your channel is still exploding!👏 Have a great day and hope your travels comes true . Serge H&S 👩❤️👨🌈🇨🇦
Sounds like you are trying to be wise about travel. I live in Eastern Arizona near the N.M. boarder. Arizona is a nice warm place to visit. You need to stay out of Phoenix in the summer, very hot, I live in the mountains it is cooler here. There is much less covid in the small towns. I have been in Canada several times also England. Have a good holiday!!
Just one word, Banff, maybe two. Please look up Boulder, utah, torrey, utah. Do an image search for these places and the burr trail, capitol reef national park and the grand staircase escalante national monument. These are remote places in utah, and some of my favorite areas to visit from las vegas just to relax and stare out with an inch of canadian rye at sunset. Jp wiser stopped exporting. I have no plans as such and unfortunately will continue working until this is all over. So much for early retirement.
I was discussing with a friend about how much the UK has to offer now we are holidaying/travelling here rather than abroad. Friends/family are doing the suffolk coast, south coast (Bournemouth), Somerset, West Country, London and enjoying the history, the arts, wonderful countryside with path network. Not to mention Wales, Scotland and the North. Now we have had our vaccines we can enjoy our pubs and restaurants, hikes and explore in the winter months too. Also, we are now getting independent businesses springing up...bakeries, grocer's, craft gift shops, micro pubs, etc. I've travelled around the world and i'm always glad to come back. Love your videos about your experiences. Perhaps you could do some stuff on Canada as it is on the list (when it is safe). Next holiday will be the Peak district in September. Cant wait. Thanks for your informative content. Enjoy your travels.
Wow that’s great sounds like a lot of fun exploring your own backyard which is what we are doing here in Canada 🇨🇦 since we bought the trailer we have seen lots of new places when we were so busy travelling we didn’t really think of travelling locally here so we are all doing new adventures. Enjoy your weekend Cheers 🌺🇬🇧🍷🇨🇦🍺
Wishing safe and open travel for us all sooner than later. Good to see you both still producing these vlogs. Looking forward to your next adventure and hope to meet and greet with ya both at some point down the road ... 🇺🇲🍺 🍺🇨🇦
It's so good to see you today. 😊 I think that your plans are well thought out and quite logical. I have thought about renting a small RV and traveling through the southwestern U.S. during the winter months. Like you, I have no desire to be in any situation where there are crowds. It's just not worth the risk. I have no problem avoiding eating in restaurants. Nowadays, many restaurants offer take out service. Actually, I enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes. 😋🤣. Most importantly, I won't be going anywhere unless my travel insurance is valid. Let's all hope and pray that this "situation" will be over soon. Take care and have a pleasant and rewarding weekend. 🤗❤🙏🌎
Enjoy your channel. I know you will be following the pandemic levels in all the states in the US you mentioned. All are very high right now, some ICUs are at capacity. I took am a senior who loves to travel, and just like you have not gone anywhere since the pandemic started, in reverse I am hoping to get back to Canada one of my favorite travel spots. As I’ve gotten older, while I still travel solo, I love some of the full service tours....but as you mentioned that is not a good choice right now. I may see about a private rental in Canada when the conditions improve. Stay safe & enjoy your future travels.
Thanks for watching yes a private rental sounds a good option to stay away from others , bus 🚌 tours are fantastic when it’s not Covid stay safe Cheers 🍷🌺
Hey Tina and Norm! So great to see your guy's ideas on your future travel plans for 2021. We agree we wouldn't want to cruise right now either. Even if we got a free one we wouldn't take it right now. LOL! We remember that bus trip you took to Florida. What a journey! Good to hear you will be staying put until this all clears up. At least you have a trailer on a beautiful lake to enjoy. That's cool you might go to Spain in the future as well and even to The south of the USA. If you come to LA we will have you over for a nice dinner. Great video and love you guys to the moon and have a great week! 💖🌛
Hi girls thanks for the dinner invitation we will take you up on it if we are in the area and will bring a nice bottle of wine 🍷 funny how yes we wouldn’t cruise 🚢 either even if it was free , hope you are both keeping busy and enjoying life hugs 🤗🍷🇺🇸🍺🇨🇦
Hi . So good to see you. I'm desperate for a trip to Portugal 🇵🇹. Miss it so much and UA-cam and photos or video are so precious. I've had both jabs and I think people in Europe dealt with covid better than UK but its just the flying aspect and transfer that makes me nervous. Thanks for letting us know about insurance, so annoying 🙄. If you go I can't wait to see your vlogs! All love for a good day. See you next week. Stay safe 🙏❤
Hi Carol hope you are keeping well we would love to go but we still have a No Non essential travel government advisory which means you insurance is not valid . We are glad we have had the trailer but missing Portugal 🇵🇹 so much it’s a lovely place , enjoy your weekend and take care hugs 🤗 Norm and Tina 🍷🌺
I agree with you 100% the places or type of holiday/vacations you will not do. I/we am considering a trip to Nova Scotia from the UK next year, (subject to Canada boarder reopening and remaining open ). I/we too would only consider a self contained airbnb. I/we have priced a flight with car rental with good refunds policy and have researched airbnb. For what ever reason just cant pull the trigger to book. Good travel insurance is a must as you say Will have to see....
I’m 55 and feel a sense of urgency too. I believe there are safe ways to travel. I have stayed in hotels since fall 2020 and feel they are doing a good job. I have been feeling safe. I would also avoid the things that you mentioned. Stay safe.
Thank you Tina and Norm for sharing informative insights for post covid travel. i would also like to travel to Europe from Asia but concerned about 15 hour flight getting covid on the plane.
Great Sage advice ,, Its a little different for single retirees ,,,My only comment is that there is health insurance available from what I understand,, However the USA is a different rate due to the crazy health care costs,,,Happy safe travel you two!
Yes there is some Covid travel insurance available but very expensive and doesn’t cover us when Canada has a No Non Essential travel advisory on its website enjoy your weekend 🌺🍷
Thank you for another timely episode as us travelers think about the future. Heading out on two trips to Maui and Kauai to use up airline credits and vacation condo rental fees before they expire over the next two months. Just moved an August cruise to 2023 due to concerns in congregate travel at this time. Rental cars are an interesting side note as availability is limited and costs are so high. Wondering how this will resolve as manufacturing is down based on empty new car spots at local dealers. Good to look at secret places to visit in late 2022 or 2023. We found the Canary Islands and Madeira to be good places to return after previous cruise visits. Shh, don't let others know. Thank you for the continued thoughtful content.
Life seems so short suddenly... We all should LIVE more and go on vacation. Lovely video and cool ideas my friends. Please stay safe its tough times right now.
Thanks for visiting hope you are feeling better you are right tough times everywhere stay and well Norm is thinking about getting a Canon R 5 he has the RP right now that we film UA-cam with☕️🌺 x
Hi interesting watch. I'm Uk based (Newcastle) Me and my wife have just recently returned from Malta. Both vaccinated. The aircraft was around 1/4 full on departure so plenty of space, around 1/3 full on home flight. The all inclusive hotel had 900 guests although capacity was 2500 so again plenty of space. We wore masks indoors only ie restaurants aircraft(mask on all the time) shops bars airport, not once seated though. We socailised but sat on the opposite side of the table to people we met. Had a test 48 hours before we returned to Uk and 48 hours after. Both negative. I think the main thing is be vigilant and respect the social distancing advice. We had a wonderful holiday and took little risks. It can be done but you need to be savvy about what your doing and where your going. keep posting Thanks
Remember that traveling in the US by car may mean staying at hotels between your destinations and those may not all be up to standard with the variant spreading as rapidly as it is. Hotels are having a hard time finding personnel to clean them, and it will not get better any time soon. You have thought out your plans and are prepared to adjust them as needed, sounds lovely.
You make a great point thank you, we have no plans to travel in the U.S. at the moment with the border closing extended for another month. We really feel for hotel and restaurant owners it been tough for them.
Please tell us more about the max month that we can be outside Canada & why..and I would really appreciate to onow what you plan to do about travel insurance. Thank you so much to mention that while travel advisory is in place the travel insurance is not covering you. I never known what are the legal consequences of such travel advisory. Very intersting info, as always 💖⚘
The max you can be from Ontario outside Canada 🇨🇦 is 7 months to keep your OHIP healthcare, we will wait till the ban is lifted then get insurance that covers you for Covid for our travels, have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
Very sensible! I know you are both avid travellers, so I hope you get to Portugal in the coming months. It’s crazy you can’t drive into the US… I thought our infection rate was worse than Canada! You should not be letting us Americans in! 😬
We hope so too but in reality we don’t think it will be till 2023 as we have a government no nonessential travel which invalidates travel insurance, yes it’s strange about the border 🧐🌺
Hi there both. great to hear about your plans - we would also look to visit quieter places and keep sensible social distancing. Have you thought about renting ( or buying ) a Motorhome (RV) We have really enjoyed our van life and it works really well in the current situation. We have been able to get to lots of great locations in the UK in our campervan.. Great vlog as always. TFS
Yes we keep talking about buying or renting an RV Motorhome, up until 6 months ago interprovincial road travel was banned. We have rented a class c Motorhome and drove Toronto to Vancouver, we have a UA-cam video of that trip. The only problem is that Motorhomes and trailers (caravans), the prices have rocketed up during the pandemic. Thanks so much for watching.
Another great video! I wasn’t aware of the insurance implications of travelling abroad at this time, so thanks for that info. I chuckled thinking about how you guys head south during the winter for warmer weather and we head to colder Quebec for a bit of skiing. But we do head south to Florida for a couple of weeks to thaw out after our ski trip.
T&N, very sensible advice. We are on the same page. Our first "outing" is early September with a road trip planned through Eastern Ontario to Ottawa and back via Algonquin Park. Our accommodation is booked in hotels / motels that have strict COVID-19 protocols. The friends we visit have all been fully vaccinated. We will of course have our masks when necessary. This winter our tentative plan is spend 3 1/2 months with a friend in her condo in Florida. Atm, we do have a concern regarding the COVID-19 situation in that State and thus that trip may not occur. We will be driving down. We will be following the same COVID-19 protocols as we are now. When we visit malls and stores in Florida we will be wearing masks. If we dine out, it will only be on patios and thus no indoor dining. The winters of 2019 and 2020 we spent in Victoria B.C.. It such a fabulous part of the world. So much to see and do. However, I am at a point where I need a bit more warmth. I am not a huge fan of Florida. In fact, at our ages, we find it very boring. However, we need the warmth and the enjoyment of long walks on a daily basis. All the best with your travels.
Sounds like some great plans , obviously you are watching to see if the border opens, we had to cancel our trip to Alabama last October. We have actually thought of Victoria for this winter just not sure how we might be welcomed from another province did you rent an apartment or stay in a hotel did you drive there ?and was it expensive 🧐 Have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Our first visit to Victoria, we rented a condo in the heart of the city. The second visit (always the case when you visit a city for the first time, you know where to stay thereafter) we rented the top of a home located in Cook St. Village which was a much better location. That unit was $2500 a month which included cleaning every two weeks plus the linens and towels were laundered. When you spend more than a month in B.C., you pay zero accommodation tax. When located in the city area, there is no need to rent a car. Everything is within walking distance. When a car was required for trips say to Salt Spring Island, West Shore, Tofino etc., we rented a vehicle from a nearby hotel. The max daily rate was $30.00. Groceries are more expensive than Ontario but we justified that as a "quality of life" tax. Our main form of entertainment was going for a daily long walk. The trails etc are fantastic. The neighbourhoods are amazing. Beacon Hill Park is fantastic. Short walk to the ocean and inner harbour. We were surprised at the number of Snowbirds who wintered in Victoria. I have been to every part of Canada and IMO, Victoria / Vancouver Island would be the best place to live.
@@peterg.newton3257 Wow that’s great thanks for the great information we will have to think about this , although it sounds like you flew then rented a car 🚗, we had thought driving out but guess it would be a long drive LOL 😂 Cheers 🍺
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Yes by plane. In the winter, it is not advisable to drive through the Rockies or across the Prairies. Too big of a risk. Again renting a vehicle was very infrequent.
I agree with your approach. It seems that we are going to have to learn to live with the virus. With people disagreeing on vaccines, masks etc. you have to find a "comfort level" and move on . Time is running out for everyone. Keep up the good work. We have Mexico booked and then Portugal for fall 2022.
Thanks for sharing we wish you safe travels for your trips , we too are hoping that fall/winter 2022/2023 might be the time for us to get back in to travel. Cheers 🌺🍷🇨🇦
Thanks for the great info on insurance coverage, keep us posted! As for the USA, you mentioned Florida or Texas, they are getting hard hit right now. I would be worried that I may need medical attention for something other than covid and the hospitals just wouldn't have the resources to help me. It's a moot point right now anyway as you mentioned as thr borders are still closed that way.
We hear you great point about the hospitals 🏥 not being able to cope , that’s why even though the border is closed we are not travelling at the moment , kind of safe to just stay home 🏡 Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🍺🇨🇦
Having a good many months exploring different regions of Portugal is my dream. I'm quite determined to make it at least a bit of a reality, once travel is safer - even if my stay isn't very long.
Good Day Norm and Tina I hope all is well I watched one of your Videos about the time when you were in Faro. The hotel you stayed at seemed ideal . If I remember correctly, you have had two rooms with a small kichenette. I was hoping that you could tell us the name of that hotel. Thank you for your time in this matter Have a great day!
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Overall , it seems like an ideal place for a long term stay. It seems that they are rather reasonalbe when it comes to long terms rates. As I correct in this?
Canadian government isn’t restricting you from flying anywhere for non-essential travel. And as far as the travel insurance I would suggest signing up for SafetyWing nomad travel insurance. They won’t cancel your insurance if you are travelling for non-essential travel and they have a $250,000 US COVID coverage included. We have been travelling since beginning of this year and have been throughout South America - back to Canada - then from Canada to Panama now. We will be travelling back to Canada in November and then heading to Europe shortly after. Portugal is our first destination.
Thanks for your response, we are at an age where travel insurance starts to get expensive and pre existing conditions come into play. $250,000 for COVID related medical in the U.S. is just not sufficient. We wish you well on your travels but we are being cautious for the foreseeable future. We appreciate you watching our video and contributing some great information.
@@ThisIsOurRetirement that is $250,000 american no matter what country your in other than the USA. If you want the coverage for the states the insurance is higher. You should really look into SafetyWing and read over their policy, I think you would be surprised.
Brilliant as always !!!!…. We are in US and planning to travel home to UK and Ireland for Xmas… hoping we can get the 3rd shot ( booster ) in November before we travel. Love your weekly video. Take care and have a great weekend. Cheers !!!
Hi you Two, come and see us in North Cyprus, (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) A very special unrecognised country, so large international companies; No McDonalds, no Starbucks etc. so well worth exploring.
Very good information. Definitely need to wait until the non essential travel advisory is removed as insurance remains an issue. Some folks enjoy the relatively green and warm winters of Victoria or some of the islands off the west coast of Canada. It is an idea….
You can do it! we are so pleased we took early retirement we got 6 years of wonderful travel memories before Covid you can’t get time back just do it and don’t look back 🌺🍷
You might want to secure your car rental early. Friends traveling in Canada could not get a car rental. Many car rentals sold off their fleet when the pandemic started and are just starting to purchase more now. I suspect that Portugal car rentals could have done the same. Enjoy your travels.
Oh to feel that freedom again! I'm not quite as impatient and find holidaying within our borders not such a problem, but my husband is chaffing at the bit to search for the more sunnier places, different cultural experiences and less flat contours countrysides. Our summer hasn't been all it could have been ( putting it mildly) as in many countries, including those with forest fires and floods. In Limburg, the Netherlands, the flood situation has eased but the scars will take many years to heal. Next month we have plans to roam our country for about 10-14 days depending on the weather. Schools will be back then and lodgings easier to book and more reasonably priced. We are allowed to go to Portugal, Italy, Greece etc, but I'm not keen just yet. When we book anything at all, we check the company policy pertaining to Covid-19. The majority have a 'switch dates' option should there be a new wave or Covid glitch of some sort. My main yearning is to get to my children, and lo and behold, The virus has entered New Zealand- making my possibility smaller once again. 🥺. Australia too is struggling- and my grandson of 21 can't wait for me to come over. 🙄! So, onward and upward, to less stress and more healthier times. I also feel that time clock ticking (68) and it feels so unfair. Happy travels when the time is ripe. I'll drink to that. 🍾 🥂 😷 🙏 🇳🇿 🙋♀️ 🇳🇱
We hear you yes we have been travelling locally which is nice but we do feel a bit like your husband missing what we used to do , but agree you can’t get time back so how to cope with travel when we feel we can do it safely . Stay safe and have a great weekend and we will drink to future travel 🌎✈️🚢🍷🍺
@@ThisIsOurRetirement My husband is booking a series of hotels to make a 'dutch tour' shortly. We have found hotels we have visited these past few months to be safe and very alert as far as adhering to regulations is concerned. Am actually looking forward to a "spoil me silly" type of holiday. 🥳 🍾 🥂 😂 Wishing you the joys of a lovely weekend. 🍱🫔🍷
I have no tips to share with you as I am still a few years away from retiring but... if you are ever here in my neck of the woods - SoCal near LA, how about considering having coffee with subscribers. I would love to meet you two. Happy traveling, Norm and Teen :)
Thank you Tina and Norm for such great advice. The problem we have is we have credits from TAP airlines which we must activate before the end of November. We are keeping our fingers crossed the COVID numbers go down and the Canadian government lifts the travel ban so we can book a trip for a winter escape to Portugal. Like a lot of people commented, we have no desire to visit the U.S. right now even though we love Florida. All the best and again, thanks!
We wish you all the best and hope the ban is lifted, will they not extend the credits due to Covid travel restrictions 🧐for you ? Have a lovely weekend Cheers🇵🇹 🍻🌺🇨🇦
@@ThisIsOurRetirement We have asked for either a refund or an extension but I'm afraid it will take so long to get a response, the deadline will be looming. Thanks for your comment and you guys have a great day.
It's great to plan ahead. Are you not concerned at the rising case numbers in the US? We miss going to the US...especially Florida...but that state's numbers are very high. It's been a hard two years with no travel. It's a tough call...do you travel with the mindset that COVID will pretty much always be with us and we just have to adjust or do we put our lives on hold for what could be an indefinite amount of time. We, like you guys, are going to keep listening and watching the news etc and may look to travel in February. Stay safe and well.
Yes we are concerned about the rising cases in the U.S.and feel sorry for those that are suffering and hope they turn the corner on this pandemic soon. Florida and other southern states seem hard hit. We don’t think it is the time to travel either, the local population needs those medical resources. Thank you for adding to the discussion and stay safe too.
Totally agree...we love the US and the people and totally wish them well during these crazy and worrying times. Fingers crossed we can all stay safe and well and turn a corner
Agree with most of your statements. I'm have been concerned about the virus spreading through commercial flights since the very beginning; however, taking as many precautions as I can, I'm taking a short getaway to the Caribbean, as yes time is running out. I'm scheduled for mid-September. Hope I could make it as numbers keep going back up all over the place. Then, in December, have two weeks of vacation and will love to go back cruising with HAL, total relaxation. Let's see what happens 🙏 Hope you could go too and will be waiting for your videos!
It is hard as yes you can’t get time back, we wish you well on your trips in Canada 🇨🇦 we have a government advisory to NOT go on Cruises 🚢 or No non essential travel which invalidates our travel insurance so we won’t be going outside of Canada yet . Enjoy your weekend Cheers 🌺🍺🍷
always a pleasure to watch your videos. Please check the US covid watch in planning. Florida is insane right now. Texas just behind Florida. Colorado’s secret is the winters are mild. Colorado and Arizona are scenic. I’m looking forward to visiting Canada, safer country than US. Thanks for the travel insurance info
I really appreciate your thoughtful informed approach to life. Friends I know (who live in different countries) j met at the Turks and Caicos Club Med for a 10 day trip in early August. The resort was not too crowded, there were meals served (not buffet), and plenty of covid rules in place with regard to testing prior to entry etc. They had a wonderful time. Sea turtles, gorgeous beaches, and great service/dining. Sadly the hurricane arrived just after their stay so folks who visited just a week after them may have had a totally different experience.
For snowbirds in Ontario, it is best to leave Canada? Oct 1 - April 1 Nov 1 - May 1 I would love to be away from Oct 1 - May 1 (7 months) but we are only allow 6 months outside Canada to keep our health benefits and not pay taxes in the USA.
Hi guys! Never hurts to be precautions! News is important but politics have gotten into the fray! I work in Chicago and live in Florida. 3 weeks in Chicago, 1 week in Florida. I fly back and forth. May 2020, there were only 10 to 15 people on the plane every month has increased, all the airports are back to full strength , masks are mandated in the airport and on the planes. It's a personal choice about traveling, if you are healthy, I believe you should continue. Life is short, you will never get this time back! Good luck on your choices! Take care!
My inlaws are 79 and 74. They are going to Lanzarote soon for 3 weeks and Tenerife for 6 weeks once Xmas is over. Half of me thinks it crazy and the other half admires them! They have gone on these trips every year since as long as I've known them. Obviously not last year! It crazy that we are now 2 years down the line and still unable to travel! I'm not sure what we will do but think it's something we need to discuss. Xx
Hi Deborah we can fully understand how you feel when do we all realize that this is here to stay and how do we work around it 🧐 if we were your in-laws at their ages we would probably do it and say what the hell as you can’t get time back and it’s running out . Yes being vaccinated is good and feel a bit safer but you can still catch it curious to know what you decide ? Take care and enjoy your weekend Cheers 🌺🍷🍺🤗
I can't remember if I said before but we booked a week in Tenerife to a hotel near where my inlaws are staying leaving 3/1/21 while the kids are still off school. Booked it back in April thinking surely it would be OK!! It's still booked for then but we are discussing possibility of pushing it back to Jan 23. Numerous reasons for delaying - both uncertain as to what winter will bring, I can not work from home if I needed to, but also its a lot of money to spend to not have the holiday experience we want. Thinking we should have a year of concentrated effort to finish our home renovation next year, materials are so expensive at moment and getting work done is slow due to high demand. Most likely. We are going to the Lake District next Easter with friends but that's all we have booked so far. I feel nervous at the prospect of flying next year but much more positive about doing so in 2023!! And once we do fly I think we will make sure we catch up on what we have missed and have a few breaks a year. I still can't bring myself to hit that reschedule button on Jan 22 just yet though, lol!!
@@deborahnicholson6206 Fingers crossed 🤞 to make the decision that makes you feel happy , we understand our concern too is the flying ✈️Have a wonderful week 🌺
@@bluewaveshows4u there was something on the news regarding a company doing this and they fly you over the border in a helicopter to Buffalo I think they said. It was mainly for RVs I think.
Hi again Tina and Norm :) Thank you for your videos, we appreciate your reviews and good ideas.Have you ever considered MedJet ( Medical Air Transportation ), as a back up plan for coming back in Canada in case of an emergency.I heard they are covering International Covid transportation too.
I always look forward to seeing and hearing you both on Saturday and we have the same mindset about traveling, at least until next year, my husband is not ready to give up is man cave and move into an apartment just yet but like many others from Ontario we are seriously considering moving to New Brunswick and living mortgage free which will give us the freedom to travel more so..our vacation this Autumn is to travel to NB and check out various area's, we love traveling by car and my husband is also a photographer and excited to explore new photo opportunities. We are fortunate enough to have visited many countries but want to explore Eastern Canada and New England along with Alberta and England to have cuddles with grandchildren. See you both next weekend lol
Our plan is to just stay home this winter as we did last year and maybe do a short Staycation . We are not happy at all about our decision but this feels right for us. We have saved a fair bit of money over the last 2 years so our vacation budget is in great shape. I’m expecting 2023 will bring incredible opportunities with zero restrictions…3 week Mediterranean Cruise her we come!! I hope lol!
I had no clue that Travel Insurance is nul & void if Non-Essential travel is in place. Unfortunately I do not see that travel band being lifted this year, if the US border opens up will you be travelling there this winter even if Non-Essential travel is in place?
No we will be observing any non essential travel advisory even if the border opens. We think the southern U.S. sunshine states are off limits due to covid this winter and non essential travel makes travel insurance ineffective. Thanks for watching.
Good morning - another wonderful knowledge sharing videos for retired people and also for those who are nearing retirement. I am just wondering if you could make a separate video for senior Canadians who are planning to travel or be outside Canada for a few months about different Travel Insurance options available and if they cover all pre-existing diseases because as far as I know provincial health cards cover in a very limited ways if at all and many private insurance have so many restrictions and numbers of days you could be outside Canada for claims. Thanks to both of you
Hi Norm and Teena; Just wondering how do you handle the length of time you are away concerning your grandchildren. How long have you been traveling in the winter months. We have two granddaughters and a grandson on the way. I think we would find it hard being away from them for so long, they might take awhile to readjust to us.
There's a lot of Americans upset about the border situation. Lots of hotels, vacation locations, businesses etc want the Canadians here. Makes no since to many of us. Traveling is much more different for foreseeable future. Hopefully things get better soon. As humans, we're not built to stay in cage. Traveling by car staying in rentals is probably the safest way to travel right now...
In the UK we are getting a booster in the autumn...to increase our antibodies after the double Astra zeneca shot. ( they do it at the same time as the influenza shot..)
I wish all travelers (or those who have the intention to travel) were as prudent and practical as you two. Having a plan is so essential. Great episode, as usual, and so timely.
We agree! a good plan helps a lot glad you enjoyed watching have a great weekend Cheers 🌺🍷🍺
Thanks for your interesting comment maybe next year we might be more comfortable enjoy your weekend Cheers 🌺🍷🍺
That "time is running out" comment, spoken undramatically but so effectively by Norm , is what brought me here too !
Cheers!!!
Thank you we are back up to the trailer tomorrow, hope you are staying safe and keeping well have a great week Cheers 🌺🍷🍺

"We aren't really cold weather people"🤣 Ha,ha...my Yorkshire husband said that 35+ years ago when he met me-a Canadian, but he also said 'I want to live in the 'real Canada' (I'm from Toronto),so we've been pretty happy and successful with our northern life(James Bay,BaffinIsland,
northern BC and ending up in the Yukon) It truly isn't as bad as you imagine for just a visit.
We just go with the flow, if we like it we stay a few days.. if not we move on… we found a little town called Solvang, loved it so much we stayed there a few days…Carmel, Palm Springs, Napa Valley omg I better stop or I’m going to cry🙃
We love the US… as soon as this is over we are doing Route 66 top to bottom… we love road trips to.
Hubby and I love watching you both and learning so much!

Thanks for sharing your vacation story sounds like you had a great time Cheers 🍷🇬🇧🍺🇨🇦
Thanks for watching have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
how about a nice 10-day trip to the beautiful Cotswalds in England?
We are letting the heat die down from our “Shocked Us” video of the UK. lol
We have actually thought of Victoria for this winter just not sure how we might be welcomed from another province did you rent an apartment or stay in a hotel did you drive there ?and was it expensive 🧐
Have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
Cheers 🌺🍷🇨🇦
I totally agree about the cruising. We've gone on 5 but won't now of course being canadian. Glad to hear your list of what you won't do.
Thanks for watching we do miss cruising 🚢but it will be a few years till we do it again Cheers 🌺🍷🍺🇨🇦
I'm thinking 6 months too.
Portugal 🇵🇹 is a wonderful place even three months there each winter would be great , hope you are well have a great weekend Cheers 🌺🍷🍺🙂
Good Day Norm and Tina
I hope all is well
I watched one of your Videos about the time when you were in Faro. The hotel you stayed at seemed ideal . If I remember correctly, you have had two rooms with a small kichenette. I was hoping that you could tell us the name of that hotel.
Thank you for your time in this matter
Have a great day!
The hotel we stayed at The Luna Solaqua and it was in Albufeira , about 30 mins from Faro , thanks for watching have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🍁🌽🍺
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Overall , it seems like an ideal place for a long term stay. It seems that they are rather reasonalbe when it comes to long terms rates. As I correct in this?
@@dwaynewalter7277 We stayed for a month and it was a good price 🙂
@@ThisIsOurRetirement I will definitely check it out.
Cheers !!!
Good luck third booster shots aren’t approved yet in Canada 🇨🇦 have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🍺🇨🇦
Norm as a suggestion consider Albania as a possible travel destination; to my knowledge no PCR test is required to entry the country.
Happy travels!
Thanks for your suggestion Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
Hi you Two, come and see us in North Cyprus, (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) A very special unrecognised country, so large international companies; No McDonalds, no Starbucks etc. so well worth exploring.
Thanks for the suggestion Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
Very wise travel suggestions! Thx!
Our pleasure! enjoy your weekend Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
Very good information. Definitely need to wait until the non essential travel advisory is removed as insurance remains an issue. Some folks enjoy the relatively green and warm winters of Victoria or some of the islands off the west coast of Canada. It is an idea….
Thanks for watching and the idea we have wondered about Victoria or the west coast warmer and less cold and snow than Ontario Cheers 🌺🍷🍺
HEY you guys !
Hope all is well :)
We are good thanks for watching have a great weekend Cheers 🌺🍷🍺
Car looks lovely. What is it? We have to get one too! Love your channel. On the cusp of retiring. Afraid to pull the plug
You can do it! we are so pleased we took early retirement we got 6 years of wonderful travel memories before Covid you can’t get time back just do it and don’t look back 🌺🍷
Catching up after our Donder
Nice to see you thanks for watching have a wonderful day Cheers 🍷🌺🍺
You might want to secure your car rental early. Friends traveling in Canada could not get a car rental. Many car rentals sold off their fleet when the pandemic started and are just starting to purchase more now. I suspect that Portugal car rentals could have done the same. Enjoy your travels.
Yes we have heard that cars 🚗 are harder to get and a lot more money 💰 thanks for watching Cheers 🍷🚗🍺🌺
The journey is your destination 💖🌲🌳💕🌴🍁🌻⚘
So true thanks for watching happy Sunday 🍷🌺
I have no tips to share with you as I am still a few years away from retiring but... if you are ever here in my neck of the woods - SoCal near LA, how about considering having coffee with subscribers. I would love to meet you two. Happy traveling, Norm and Teen :)
Sounds great! we would love too , we have met several subscribers already have a lovely weekend Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🍺🇨🇦
Thanks for your advice and comment stay safe and well 🍷🇺🇸🍺🇨🇦
I really appreciate your thoughtful informed approach to life.
Thanks for sharing a nice story enjoy your weekend 🌺🍷

Thanks for the offer when it’s safe to travel and the border opens LOL 😂😂
AirBnB guys...in Europe= cheaper and safer than hotels at the mo.

For snowbirds in Ontario, it is best to leave Canada?
Oct 1 - April 1
Nov 1 - May 1
I would love to be away from Oct 1 - May 1 (7 months) but we are only allow 6 months outside Canada to keep our health benefits and not pay taxes in the USA.
We hear you that’s why we were thinking mixing the time between 🇺🇸 USA and Portugal 🇵🇹 to avoid the tax problem LOL 😂 Cheers 🍺
Take care!
Thanks for your comment stay safe when you travel ✈️Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🇨🇦🍺
My inlaws are 79 and 74. They are going to Lanzarote soon for 3 weeks and Tenerife for 6 weeks once Xmas is over. Half of me thinks it crazy and the other half admires them! They have gone on these trips every year since as long as I've known them. Obviously not last year! It crazy that we are now 2 years down the line and still unable to travel! I'm not sure what we will do but think it's something we need to discuss. Xx
Hi Deborah we can fully understand how you feel when do we all realize that this is here to stay and how do we work around it 🧐
if we were your in-laws at their ages we would probably do it and say what the hell as you can’t get time back and it’s running out .
Driving to the US makes a lot of sense to me, especially if you are planning a long visit. Otherwise if you flew you’d just be renting a car anyway.
That’s very true thanks for watching 🍷🌺
Any idea how much it would cost to have my car shipped from Toronto to the US and have it there waiting for me to drive?🤔….just curious.

Our plan is to just stay home this winter as we did last year and maybe do a short Staycation . We are not happy at all about our decision but this feels right for us. I’m expecting 2023 will bring incredible opportunities with zero restrictions…3 week Mediterranean Cruise her we come!! I hope lol!
Sounds like a great plan we are looking to 2023 as a travelling year hopefully everything will have opened up Cheers 🍺🌺🍷
I hear yea I do alot of Canadian bus Tours great touring business
Yes they do and we really enjoyed it 🌺
Good morning - another wonderful knowledge sharing videos for retired people and also for those who are nearing retirement. Thanks to both of you
Thanks for the suggestion there are lots of options but with the government advisory on you aren’t covered enjoy your weekend Cheers 🍺🌺🍷

Hi Norm and Teena; Just wondering how do you handle the length of time you are away concerning your grandchildren. How long have you been traveling in the winter months. We have two granddaughters and a grandson on the way. I think we would find it hard being away from them for so long, they might take awhile to readjust to us.
The longest we have been away is two months , we always send postcards and use Facetime they always recognize us LOL 😂Cheers 🍷🌺
There's a lot of Americans upset about the border situation. Lots of hotels, vacation locations, businesses etc want the Canadians here. Makes no since to many of us. Traveling is much more different for foreseeable future. Hopefully things get better soon. As humans, we're not built to stay in cage.
