    I've always known that apartment living is less expensive than home ownership, but somehow I just wanted to own my home. But now, I am definitely ready to transition to a smaller place. I am tired of yard work and everything else that is involved with owning. You two are so refreshing to watch.

      You can do it! we found once we mentally had decided to sell and that we were going to rent it all became so exciting a plan was in place . We are loving the renting life so less stress, having laundry ensuite is also great as well as the swimming pool 🏊‍♀️ which Tina loves. We wish you all the best Cheers 🍺🍷🌻

      house is good until you got small kids because they enjoy the space but once kids go away, owning home is unnecessary.

      Perhaps what you say is somewhat correct. But the problem occurs when the owner wants to substantially increase the rent or has decided to sell the property as is happening in Australia at the moment. And there is a huge shortage of properties. It is difficult to move house when you are in say your eighties.

    Congratulations on your 45th Anniversary and your 100th UA-cam video!! Excellent content! We sold our home 13 months ago within a month of retiring, downsized about 90% of our possessions and dramatically reduced our expenses as well. We did spend about two years becoming adjusted to the idea of leaving the home that we built 19 years earlier. A year later, life is great and we are retaining a lot more of our wealth! We were planing on contacting you both this winter in Portugal as we were going to be there too. Perhaps someday we will be able to meet for coffee. Thanks for sharing!!

Also it enables you to review finances and have a stress free debt free life. Portugal sounds a long way away these days, we would like to be there this winter / spring, who knows. It would be great to meet up in Portugal 🇵🇹

    great advice! my in laws are hitting 70s and they are building their “dream” house, which isn’t something i would do at that age. we’ve gone back and forth and we want to be able to travel and enjoy life after caring for our four children. the next chapter in our life would be to live abroad for half of the year, come back to the states for the rest to spend time with family (future grandkids). also what’s fun about living abroad is when we do have grandchildren, our hope is that they will be able to visit us and experience the country and it’s culture. that’s our goal.

    Good to see someone talking about financial planning - so many people leave it way too late to analyse and set goals. The ideal goal is to know your annual expenses for every item and decide if you want or can afford that. And to save enough to cover the living expenses, including property costs.
    It's important to also plan for where you will be when you are much older and need medical help - have heard of people moving to areas with very limited medical, far from family, and unable to buy back into or rent in capital city where prices have gone up too much.
    Every country has different issues around affordability. Personally, I prefer to own one property at least, so if circumstances or prices change, I have a place to stay. I could rent it out if I want to live elsewhere.
    There are so many homeless people, especially women, over 50 who didn't think about where they would live if they became sick or unemployed. I know circumstances are sometimes unavoidable, but most people don't forward think or even know their options financially before a crisis hits, then it almost too hard to start getting financially literate.

    I remember when I worked in banking while living in a very expensive area of Glasgow. The houses were enormous sandstone ones. An old lady customer used to come in, she was always overdrawn and was living on £20 a week yet she had one of these houses. I very carefully spoke to her about looking to downsize but she said her grown up children were against it and she wanted to leave it to them. It was so sad, I always tried to spend a bit of time chatting to her as she was lonely. I think as you get older, legacies are massive in your decision making. Dx

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  4 роки тому +6

      That is a sad story and we saw our parents who stayed in the family houses and after 40 years their friends had moved on or passed away and social isolation and loneliness become issues. The other financial issue of homeownership is property tax how it keeps increasing. We certainly don't have the answers, but are happy in our apartment, where we see and chat to people everyday, it is a building with an older demographic. It was very nice of you to spend time with her I'm sure she appreciated the chat. Thanks you for watching and sharing your comment.

    Happy anniversary, great accomplishment! Great advice. One thing ive found here in apartment living is you lose alot of control. For example, if you neighbors are loud, or unsanitary, it can be a problem. My perception knowing a few canadians is that they are more respectful of other people. Not so in my area. Many apartment complexes designate some units as affordable housing to get federal funding. Most time thugs end up in these units. Also as you mentioned, no rent price control. So what do you recommend..
    Move, which we are looking at 55 and over. What you say about social isolation is true.

    I find that interesting. Usually people say that you should buy property. This is the best way to invest money. But the way you look at it and explain it, your way is a good decision.

      Thank you for watching and commenting, investing in property our family house was the right thing to do as you suggest to build wealth while we worked, unfortunately property tax continues to increase every year and eventually will become too expensive. Selling our home gave us the ability to invest and be able to afford life to the end of our lifetime. Have a great week 😀😀

    This is a very interesting concept. I have been watching it now several times and did some research in my area of apartment living costs. I was sad to find out that it is actually cheaper to own a house in Central Florida. Rent prices for a nice apartment would be more than owning my paid for house. The average rent for an 800 square foot apartment is about $1,600 a month and if I wanted a two bedroom at a thousand square foot you're talking over $2,000 a month and that does not include any utilities. So what we have decided to do is to sell this house and to move to Tennessee which is a place we have always wanted to live and to build a home there. Right now with prices so high we may have to postpone the building part but we may go ahead and sell the home and rent temporarily or buy a camper and travel. Perhaps go to Ottawa! Or even Alaska. Keep the videos coming.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching Debbie we found moving to a less expensive area meant we could rent a two bedroom apartment at a lot lower price including utilities . Good luck with your plans stay safe and well Cheers 🍷🇺🇸🍺🇨🇦

    I completely agree. Property taxes, maintenance costs, insurance..... it all adds up. It ends up being a big piggy bank in the end if you sell it then you can live off the interest and dividends. I plan on moving to a lower cost area. The more economical the better!

      There is a myth that mortgage free is living free, far from it. Our number one concern in retirement is unexpected financial expenses. One viewer commented on our F.I.R.E. video adjusted the “retire” to rent everything which we totally agree with. It’s great you have a plan. Thanks for adding to this conversation.

    Ben Felix, a fellow Canadian here on UA-cam, talked about the 5% rule when comparing the cost of homeownership vs renting. His theory definitely supports your point that owning your home can be extremely expensive in terms of non-recourverable costs (property tax + home maintenance + mortgage interest) and even more then non-recouverable cost or rent (annual rent expense).

    We have done a pretty good job with self isolation. We can't wait until we can get back out and enjoy life again but safety first. We have been slowly removing clutter from our home and life. I am too emotionally invested in my home to get rid of it but it is inexpensive to maintain for the most part. Moving back in with my mom could be an option but the expenses of me needing a therapist at that point would be astronomical. LOL. We are fortunate that the cost of living in this area is relatively low. It sounds like selling your place and downsizing was a really good idea. It allows more freedom for travel when you no longer have to maintain a home. Great video idea.

    Congrats on 100 and 45!!! Really great video. I am now looking around at retirement options as well. Planning on a new country and cheaper place to live as well. Totally agree on selling the house. I also have always thought of the house as my retirement. I actually had only been thinking of buying a smaller house. But you have now got me thinking otherwise 🤔 Also the reality is that as we get older (dare I say it) stairs and cutting the grass and painting - it all becomes more difficult. Always lovely seeing your faces 🤗 🌷 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

      Hi Karen it is amazing the difference to your life when there is no maintenance i.e grass cutting,snow removal , general house up keep , the beauty here is if anything goes wrong you just call the superintendent to fix it !
      When you are looking at options one thing we have is we have our own washer and dryer ensuite we loved that 🙂
      Are you thinking Portugal 🇵🇹 by any chance if so we could come visit (LOL)😂😂thanks for watching and have a great week stay safe Cheers Norm and Tina 🍷🍺😎

    My wife and I also thinking about selling house around or even before retirement, but we love it, but the money would produce income and we could live somewhere else for a lot a lot less

      @markito Make sure you do up a spreadsheet listing every expense for each plan. You have to take into consideration the factor while your money is invested in a house it’s appreciating considerably and has proven to be a safe investment. Since interest rates are next to 0 you need to invest the proceeds from your house into the stock markets to get any income. Stocks are a lot higher risk than real estate. You could very well lose your money in a market crash or if the company removes it’s dividend payments due to events like now a pandemic or bad economy.

    I think that renting vs owning depends on your stage of life. Owning a property makes sense when you have a long time frame for appreciation. At retirement, you can benefit from freeing up that equity and use it to generate an income. However that only works after having paid off a mortgage.

    I guess it is an advantage to sell a house since you lovely couple likes to travel anywhere. But on the other side, there's no place like home.

      Thank you for visiting us and commenting, the apartment we have is our home, we have been here for 5 years but do travel a lot while we have our health. As you say we always look forward to coming back home from our travels, no place like home. Have a great week.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement

      TFW selling now will give you choices, when you sell invest the money and that will generate interest to provide the monthly rent , when we sold the house it was amazing how different you felt Good Luck with your plans let us know how you do . Enjoy your week Cheers 🍷🍺👍
