  • Spend the cold winters in The Algarve Portugal it's cheaper than you might think. Escape the snow of Canada or Northern USA and enjoy spring like climate in the south of Portugal on the famous Algarve. Winters can be very pleasant for Norther Europeans and British retired people to spend months away from cold and damp weather.
The Algarve has plenty of choice from bustling cities like Albufeira, Faro and Lagos to laid back small villages and towns Alvor, Tavira, Quarteira and Ferragudo. Winter is especially nice because there are no crowds, no rowdy football fans just mainly retired North Americans and Europeans. How Much Is Winter In The Algarve Portugal we show you we have broken down the costs of staying a month in The Algarve, from the cost of rental apartments, car rental, restaurants and groceries. We give examples of flights from Toronto to Faro direct on Air Transat and TAP Air Portugal via Lisbon.
If you are curious about the Cost For One Month Winter In The Algarve we have the answers.

Why would you fly from Lisbon to Faro? that's longer than train - counting waiting for flight and etc and worse for the environment. it's only 3 hours on the train to Faro. And you can even stop near Albufeira, if it's your destination.

    Why bother with car rental?
There's an excellent public transport system there.

To travel outside Albufeira all the public transport is miles away from the centre. We are travel photographers and filmmakers and need the car to do our job.

@@ThisIsOurRetirement have you used the Algarve train service? Granted Albufiera is not served by it but many other town are. It's cheap, safe and enhances public transport.
PS. I source accommodation when there sometimes weekly. I use the major search directories and have also check with accommodation if they can match or beat. I've found some absolute bargains in the winter months.
      Wish I was there now.

Yes we have used the Portuguese railway Lisbon to Cascais but not in the Algarve, however we have photographed the Algarve trains at Faro and The Albufeira-Ferreiras Station we can recommend the cafe in the station. Sounds like you have found a secret for affordable accommodations. When you said in your first post use public transport live like a local, we had to smile because the majority of locals drive. Have a good day.

@@ThisIsOurRetirement good point " live like locals " not the best expression. Perhaps the fact that I'm car free when over there, and without the stresses of traffic, one way systems and parking, falsely made me feel local, when liberated is more apt.

I love the off-season in the Algarve, and this year prices seemed lower than in previous years (covid?). We just got back form a month there. We are coming from the Netherlands so our flights are much cheaper and we found a great 1 bedroom place with a pool, 5 minutes to the beach in Quarteira for €1100. We do the same thing you did with the car, the little kiosk in P4 is so much cheaper than the big-name companies at the other end of the airport. We always wind up with a small 4-door car with AC and manual transmission, but it's great for parking and fuel costs. The supermarkets are superb, many fresh ingredients, prepared meals, roasted chickens, and more at good prices. Baked goods were particularly cheap, many prices under €0.50 for ham and cheese pastries for breakfast. If you are on an extreme budget there are also nice options for lunch, for example, the Continente store has decent take-and-bake pizzas for less than €2. For that cost, you get pepperoni and a veggie, but my wife and I usually buy some mushrooms, arugula, and green peppers and add it to the pizza. Wine is spectacularly cheap so we can have a decent enough lunch with wine and fresh-baked pizza for €5 for the 2 of us! We also found many local places run set lunch specials in the €6-8 range. The malls are great, but they also have very affordable food courts, and several offer local soups and flavors. It's not spectacular eats, but a solid value and not the penalty box a foodcourt in a North American mall is!

Hi Tina and Norm: we enjoy this and your other videos. My wife and I are in an apartment hotel in Albufeira right now after a flight from Calgary to Lisbon via Amsterdam. Things are wonderfully open here in Portugal due to a 98% double vaccination rate for eligible 12 year and up Portuguese (see the New York Times three weeks ago) with no fourth wave. There are plenty of Dutch, British and French tourists here but sadly only two other Canadians. Rental cars, however, are double normal prices.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement
      @ThisIsOurRetirement  2 роки тому +5

Yes we read about the Admiral who was in charge of Portugal’s vaccine he did a great job. The problem we see is the amount of visitors from other European countries, Germany and UK are having a spike in covid cases and we believe that is where the risk will come from. Also we were vaccinated in April with second shot in June, these antibodies according to medical people have all but disappeared leaving only the memory cells to react to this virus. Booster shots look like a temporary solution so that is what we are waiting for.
It’s great you are there and having a nice time, most Canadians we know tend to go to The Algarve January to May. Thanks for watching we really appreciate your support.

What is the temperature for the month of January in Algarve normally and what is the temperature in November? We are thinking of going to Algarve in November or January. He likes to swim so I don’t know how the ocean is I have been there in April. it was really warm, but the water was a little cold even though he still went in. Would we be needing jackets or can we walk around in T-shirts? We are also from Ontario and we are Portuguese. I went to years ago to Algar, but it was in May course beautiful weather. I don’t like it too hot so I would just like to know what you think of January weather or November thank you so much and I enjoy following you. Also, face masks are required only on public transit here in Portugal and nowhere else, e.g. on the day tours we booked and in the bottom of the On/Off tour busses but not as guests in restaurants and at a fado music evening. However, the hotel and restaurant employees all wear masks and respect proper COVID safety protocols. Our outdoor and indoor pools at our Albufeira apartment hotel are open and being used by guests with reservations and a restriction of no more than ten people at a time. It’s lovely here!

And the beauty of Albufeira is, that unless you really NEED a car, want to tour, or have s real problem with the hills, then no real need to hire. Public transport is reasonable and available to reach other major locations and around town. It doesn't tend to be like UK, standing and shivering in the rain awaiting a late bus. Just walk everywhere 😀.
Not surprised if prices are high. I'd think it is going to be same in restaurants, bars and hotels for some time to come.
There have been so much financial loss created by government, one can hardly blame small company owners , especially, from attempting to claw back losses and profitability.

I am living in France but I am portuguese. I am 60 years old and lived 23 years there. Next time you go to Portugal, please don't forget to visitt the "Fuseta" beach. If I had to choose the three most beautiful beaches ones out there, Fuseta would be one of them, may be be the first. When you go there, you must take a boat with lots of people, litle boat, it costs 1 euro. Very nice. There's one every 15 minutes. You can also take a taxi boat, it costs 7 euros each total, but I see no point in doing this. This beach is near Olhao. Olhao also deserves some inspection, there are an old lovely town and many bars from a few metres from the sea and litle boats, market, etc. There's a nice restaurant where you eat like kings for 7 euros, all included. Not for tourists... I can't say the name now, but I can check it for you if you want. Thank you for the nice video, take care. Francisco

Choosing a location close to a super market ,fresh market ,beach and tourist office is a plus.

Hi Norm & Tina. Thanks for another great video. We travel exactly as you do (minus the car rental) and it’s amazing the wonderful vacations we’ve had across Europe without breaking the bank. We just love Portugal - the people are friendly and helpful - they are proud of their country and it shows. We all have to educate ourselves as best we can when visiting another country, but we never felt that business owners in Portugal were out to rip us off (which we have felt in other European countries). We really hope to travel there again in March 2022. Hubby is ready to book flights and accommodations right now, I’m still a bit hesitant but we may have to hold our noses and just do it. And in the meantime Portugal, and Algarve area especially, is being filled with people that come here to retire, when portuguese people work to still be in despair and poverty, and they have not nor the culture, nor the traditions nor the respect to keep the portuguese soul alive.

Additional savings in choosing luggage options etc for flights to-from Faro, Transfers etc.
Resident Tax savings via NHR possibilities, local Giro bus options, Rail ticket reductions and concessions and even Gas/Petrol/Diesel price promotions are available on specific days!

@@ThisIsOurRetirement Sure. I thought that you were paying over the odds when I watched!
OK, I used to use HolidayAutos until this year. I've now found out that CarJet appears to better the prices .
I book online. Pick up at P4 Faro Airport or meet there and take the courtesy bus to very near off-site park.
I agree with taking pictures or video of car although I've never had any issues at all in Portugal - unlike in Spain!
Always choose like-like or full-full fuel.
To take options (Satnav, Damage waiver, Child seats, extra driver, pass to Spain or Motorway/Freeway use can add significantly so I always decline all).
Just make sure you don't reject the Motorway option then use by mistake - easily done).
I take my own Satnav Tom-Tom as I have no sense of direction but I think the rental companies charge €8/day and that is pricey for a months hire!!
Unless you have independent Damage Waiver Insurance then I'd always advise taking that option.
I don't take it as I buy (online) annual damage waiver for about £30-40 a year!
Never claimed in it yet, but it's a great stress reliever!
Note that some companies ask for age and only accept under 65 or 70 or..
I never pay or choose Aircon for a hire as I find that cars tend to have it installed anyway.
      Last important points:
I only stay in Albufeira and only tends to be December-June. I find renting for 28 or 30 day maximum is best. If you choose 32 days or so the prices climb dramatically so I hire 28-30 days then return and hire again- sometimes with same company, mostly not.
All are in P4 at Faro Airport.
A shuttle to/from Faro/Albufeira is about €8 if I need a one way trip, but I like to use bus and train as more relaxing and easy once you know how.
Also, car hire increase in price around Easter or March.
I find rental €110-130 for a month in December -March and then they increase exponentially..sometimes €300 or more in May or June so I only hire Pre April , thereafter the weather is great and I am happy to do without a car or travel less April-June.
      Hope this helps.
      It's all experience.
      Regards,
      Alan.

We just returned from spending two months in Portugal. Was considering going to Lagos in the Algarve, but was told many restaurants closed,. Is this true?
We spent some time in Madeira and was looking for a month rental.Found a few one bedroom apartments with distant ocean view for $800 US dollars .This was in January

@@ThisIsOurRetirement No problem. Thx for your quick response. Just wondering if you've ever spent a winter in Spain? If so, how did you like it compared to Portugal? Also.. in Portugal, did you find a lot of people smoke in restaurants? Cheers!

No we haven’t we have visited Spain 🇪🇸 on our cruise ships , we are thinking it might be an option for us during Winter , yes we find smoking in restaurants in Portugal very hard as we don’t smoke even if you sit outside you get the smoke , in Canada 🇨🇦 restaurants are smoke free so it is hard . Nice to see you guys went to Portugal I'm a form of Portuguese national live in the US now I haven't been there for 55 years going to be retiring soon too and I'd like to go back and see my nation of birth I have a weird thing though my father was from Portugal and my mother was from the islands of the Azores and both places are incredibly beautiful but I think I will go to the Azores first cuz when I was born I spent most of my time in Portugal not on the island but I saw a video of it recently and it really really looks beautiful and the gentleman that was reviewing the island said it's like the Hawaii of the Atlantic Ocean with the hint of Ireland which I thought it was very interesting

Wow I spent roughly the equivalent for a week in London Ontario for 10 days with only 5 days in hotel. June 2022. Car price and air fare from the West the same. Will definitely look into Portugal. It will be more $$ now for flights. Safety so important!! I don’t want to be stuck in a resort. Thx

Hi Nancy there are plenty of non resort accommodations in Portugal and flights in Canada from the west to Toronto are getting cheaper with the new low cost airlines, then pick up a flight out of Toronto to Portugal. Hope you find something that suits you. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the info! You probably have done this already, but be sure to check the limitations of your credit card rental insurance, for maximum days to be covered. Not sure what the situation is for cards/coverage in Canada, but in the US, most cards have some limitation where max rental periods are less than 30 days, including some at 15 days or less. Also, be sure to have a card that gives primary coverage, not secondary. Happy Travels!
