Went out on a private charter few months ago striper fishing. I watched the deckhands tie up leaders using the double uni. Witnessed numerous 40lb class fish and beyond being caught with zero failures. Made me a believer.
You read the comments on knot tying and hear folks raving about the FG as the best. Curiosity finally got me wondering so I Googled the steps to tie the FG. 😳Even the new "improved" methods some folks have come up with are filled with warnings about how you can fail if you mess up one step or other. A decent job on a double uni always seems to do the trick, no matter how much I pull on it. And I've never caught a fish that pulls as hard as I tested it. 🤣 I still practice other knots, but the Palomar and double uni will always provide a backup plan to cover most any situation. 👍🏼
Thanks Mr. Martin I needed this cause I’m still learning how to tie the double uni knot on my spinning rod. By the way, I was watching some old videos last night and come across the 1973 bass master classic and you were in the video! You looked so young in that video. I was blown away how it has changed over the years. All the contestants were in the same boats, they were red and white. I think Rayo Breckinridge was the winner of that tournament. It’s just amazing to me how much the sport has grown!
I have used the Uni-Uni knot for 20 years with many different applications. Never had an issue. I now use the Alberto knot because I think it goes through the guides better.
Thank you for this video. I think we all remember when a buddy or buddys dad shows us a cool knot or bit of fishing info, that sticks with you. You are doing that for us all the time.
Thank you for the clear demonstration of joining two different lines together i always had them slip off before but now its going to stick your a good teacher Roland keep well : )
When I first started using braid I couldn't figure out why my normal clinch knot wasn't working.. Thanks to Roland and his other videos I learned the Palomar knot. And he's right it works great. I do alot of trout fishing with a ultra light rod and spinner baits. The braided line really helps me cast it out good. And fishing on the rivers with rocks and logs or other heavy cover this knot has not broke on me yet
I broke a palomar knot off at the lure before the FG ever thought about giving. I continued to fish with that same braid to leader FG knot for about a month after that catching a dozen plus bass before I replaced it. That's exceptional and PLENTY good for me.
It's a tried and true technique that's been around for a very long time. It's shortcoming is that it's a bit chunky and can get hung-up in micro-guides that seem to be so popular these days.
You're right about the FG knot, I do use it a lot because it goes through the guide so nice, but IT IS really easy to tie a bad FG and not realize it until it's too late.. I follow them up with super glue now just to be sure and constantly test them.. I'm going to give the double uni a try.
Excellent video sir!! I found you on UA-cam a few months back and I watch your videos all the time (especially lately as I’m stuck home with covid) I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve learned just by watching your videos, so thank you!! Also, I fish braid with floro leaders and these two knots are pretty much the only ones I use!!
You are right about the FG knot. I practiced it for 2-years before I made the switch over to it however I bought a special tool to tie it. I can tie one in the boat in about 2-minutes without rushing, and I have not had any FG knot fail in 3-years. I did many experiments with knots so if I get hung up and have to break it, it would break at the hook. I use an FG braid to leader and a uni-knot to the hook and it shows breaking at the knot at the test rating of the line every time. This way I do not have to tie much in the boat as long as I start out with a long leader.
Did you know? The super glue you always have around you can be used to fix the cut you have under your bandaid and once it heals the glue comes off by then . sometimes a daily application is needed for a few days but it frees your fingers from the bulky bandaid. You can also glue a small piece of papertowel over the cut for more protection. Flyfishing to guitar playing love my ( krazy glue) non poisonous also . love your content
I use the double uni knot when connecting braid to the leader material, but use a variation of the uni knot for tying braid directly to lure or hook. Instead of standard uni, I go through the eyelet twice, and then do ten wraps.
Mr Martin when you say the sensitivity is so much greater with braid, dose it lesson the sensitivity when using fluorocarbon tied to braid? In other words dose using braid with fluorocarbon line lesson the sensitivity.
Hi Roland, I keep getting a knot in the Braid when I cast my spinning reel . It is always about ten yards from lure. What am I doing wrong? Thanks David
Very good point regarding consistency when comparing the double-uni and FG knots. I use the FG when I’m home and rigging up with plenty of time on my hands to do it right, but I certainly prefer something else when I’m on the water. If you’re able to answer this, I’d like to know what your opinion is of the blood knot for tying on a leader.
Hey Roland, been a fan since. Well let's just agree it's been awhile. Have you ever heard of a line to line knot called Kodiak or Klondike or something along those lines? I've seen it on here but can't recall the exact name.
I almost always use the double uni for connecting flouro or mono leaders to braid. Sometimes I use an albright for lighter gear. I've never had either fail on me. I've heard the GT knot is actually stronger than the FG but I've never tied either.
Roland, If one makes sure the final loop lays on top of the square knot, away from the hook or lure, then the Palomar runs about 124% in braided line. A great knot for sure.
What is a good knot for the braid to fluorocarbon leader that will go through small rod guides. I have issues with the double uni knot getting hung up in the guides.
Why is it necessary to go lighter with leader? I always thought you went heavier with the leader. Would love to know why and the science behind this. Thankyou
I’ve tried the FG knot and I think it’s completely to complicated. The double uni knot is by far the best one for a leader in my opinion for the strength and ease of tying
The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. People hate tying knots and a good engineer will put an end to the cumbersome knots. I am working on some innovations now to solve this problem.
@@RolandMartinOutdoors John Collins on Royal Polaris long range boat came up with this knot so as to cast live baits to yellow fin tuna through rod eyes with no obstruction
Can anyone answer? I understand the thinking in using 65 pound braid to cut through the weeds and haul a bass out with a bucket full of cabbage. But the highest line recomendation I have ever seen a freshwater rod is 30 lb line. Does that mean if I just dead pulled with that 65 or even 50lb line, the rod would snap before the line?
Pat, it has more to do with the diameter of the line. The line ratings on the rod are typically for mono equivalents. Just compare the the diameter of the braid to mono. For example, 65lbs braid is approximately similar to 12 lbs test mono diameter. There is some variation from brand to brand to brand, but that's the generally concept. Hope that helps.
Mr. Martin, I've watched you off and on for 60 years and I used to use my teeth to cut fishing line, but today with braided line why don't you advertise a boomerang cutting tool it is the easiest way to cut line.
Been saying for years that anyone who learned the fg knot on UA-cam & not actually working as a mate on a charter boat should really just stick to the double uni..
Sorry Roland, but you are living in the past still. The uni to uni is probably the worst line to leader knot there is! If you want an easy to tie knot that is far superior to the uni to uni, tie the Alberto knot. It's super strong and easier to tie than a uni to uni. Also, the Palomar is another knot that is old school, and doesn't even make the top ten list of strong line to lure knots. The Fish-N-Fool knot beat the Palomar and all other knots on the Knot Wars TV show and it is still the strongest knot ever tested with braid or mono plus it's one of the easier knots to tie as it is very similar to a uni knot.
The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. Does the double uni-knot go through the eyes of the rod ok or does it become a problem?
Micro guides are a problem but I don't use rods with micro guides!
I like the knots the number 2 one
Hi Mr. Roland, what is your set-up, rod and reel that you use?
My number one combo is a 7 foot med-heavy rod like the pro series by Favorite rod with a 8:1 ratio Favorite casting reel with 50# braid.
Does the knot always cast thru the guides good with the double uni? Thanks Roland!
Depends on how small they get. Smaller eyes you'll feel it and cringe every time you cast lol
It works but I don’t recommend it-use a blooodknot if passing through guides is a concern.
just another great video
I use the double blood knot for connection knots. It’s very strong and easier to tie than double uni in my opinion.
One of the strongest
Thanks roland
Great video
Always like simple.
I use a tiny swivel for my leader knot is that bad for sensitivity??
Swivels are old old school
Thank you!
You showed us how to tie a loop knot a while back and I cannot find it. I need to find it again, do you remember the name of that video?
He goes over the loop knot in "The 3 best knots for monofilament" and "3 best knots for braid."
