Contestant Ray Klausen went on to become a successful, award-winning set designer for television and theater. In 2021 he published a book, "Behind the Scenes: From Hollywood to Broadway."
I know your comment is 2 years old but I appreciate the update, very cool
What a different time…. I remember it well. Take me back to a better time.
Right on👍
That isometric clue was neat. Both ladies looked delighted by it. Wouldn't work today, but still love it!
It's beyond obvious that for "Roar" the 1st word would be "Lion" and in the 2nd word would be "sound" (at least that's the way I would've played it).
Cut her some slack. Maybe she was daydreaming about Max
This was a Tuesday. She was gone the next episode (ua-cam.com/video/NrZDE_0nhoU/v-deo.html). Ludden claims she was called back to CA, but since they usually filmed a week's worth in a day, it's possible she was feeling badly.
@@joeambrose3260 LOL, you may have a point! :-)
I felt for the contestant too, but sometimes you can freeze, especially with games where you hear the clock ticking. So I agree we have to cut Donna some slack. Especially as they lost several seconds early in the round when the word jumped ahead and Allen called for the clock to be stopped while they sorted the words out, and the person running the clock didn’t, but just let it keep running.
@@alexrafe2590 I hear you, Alex. In fact, as I sometimes mentioned in these comments, here I am a cyber armchair quarterback in the year 2023 - NOT in front of a studio audience with cameras recording me for millions of people and a clock ticking and… and. 🙂 So I totally cut all sorts of slack. Very good points.
There wasn't any cheating when Donna Douglas did the multiple lightning rounds, but there was when Jack Cassidy did the lightning round.
I see, I'm very rude for suggesting she may have a drink but you suggesting that Jack cheated isn't? You were there? you know this how?
@LynettePalecek He cheated here and in the previous ep. Idk why they allowed it. But they called it Donna for it. Really bothered me.
@kj robbi Yes, that bothered me too.
She should have been allowed five more seconds since they had problem with the words popping up. They never stop the clock
THAT'S EXACTLY CORRECT!! That's what I thought.
i don't think that would have helped. for some reason Donna just lost it.
For "Hinge" after the word "Door" was given as a clue may be "Swivel" or "Swiveler"
I was just entertained for 20 minutes by 7 RIPs. RIP
How can u be sure
Betsy Allee is still with us and looking good, well into her 70s.
@@lclarkwells Who is
She. ?
Donna is smart. I've seen her in other eposodes
She seemed a little off this time
This was a Tuesday. She was gone the next episode (ua-cam.com/video/NrZDE_0nhoU/v-deo.html). Ludden claims she was called back to CA, but since they usually filmed a week's worth in a day, it's possible she was feeling badly.
This particular week the starz were each there 2 days. I personally feel like she didn't do good either day. Lovely woman though.
Luckily the woman she played with was brilliant; the guy was hopeless.
@@chasethecat3839 Only Donna Douglas was missing after the first two days. Jack Cassidy stayed on the whole week. And Arlene Francis was explicitly said to be there only because Douglas had to leave.
I'd call it a nice try, but it really wasn't.
I thought the same thing. This isn't the way she normally is on this show. Could she have had one too many backstage? I know they did sometimes offer drinks to loosen folks up. Another thought I had was, it's possible Jack unnerved her backstage. His kids have said he was unpredictable at times and he puts off a vibe. Maybe she had a Family issue and just had to go, but I think it was Jack.
It's hilarious people are critiquing a 55-year old show - let alone criticizing celebrities who are long dead.
Regarding Donna Douglas' bad performance: This was a Tuesday. She was gone the next episode (ua-cam.com/video/NrZDE_0nhoU/v-deo.html). Ludden claims she was called back to CA, but since they usually filmed a week's worth in a day, it's possible she was feeling badly.
Jack Cassidy kind of creeped me out. With respect, great actor
That's why he was so good as a villain in columbo. Smarmy , gleaming eye, toothy grin, dimples etc
Creepy? Not at all. He's handsome, dastardly, devilish and that smile and dimples. He was the best!
@@kathleenkishkabibbles2759 Notwithstanding, he had the cringe factor of Bob Crane and Richard Dawson combined !
He had a great singing voice...
Donna look like she didn't feel good. Just maybe having a bad tired day.
i wonder what happened to donna douglas ? roar was an easy word. the 2 clues of lion and sound - anyone would have gotten it.
but she was just silent. and then she got up to leave. she seemed extremely disoriented.
i just wonder if she had some sort of episode of something ? that was very strange !!
Jimmy Brice it was very odd!! She didn’t do well in the lighting rounds for this day anyway! Tired maybe? Or she just didn’t think quickly.
I agree. She was replaced for the remaining appearances for this week by Arlene Francis, I believe. Something had to have been wrong. She was so sweet and bright.
She could have been worried about something going on back in Hollywood or with a family member. You just never know what's going through a person's mind.
Candy back then....uppers and downers.
@@robbernath the stars were each only on it 2 days that week according to the host
Donna was not feeling well.
I think she had a meltdown
You're right not with it at all

@@joeambrose3260 NO SHE DIDN'T, YOU MORON!
Donna Douglas also remembered for the Twilight Zone along with several cast members from the Hillbillies in various episodes. Right Jed?
💙💙💙
Contestant Betsy = the Jennifer Aniston of the 1960s (think Rachel from "Friends")
Was Donna OK when she more then one occasion couldn't think and looked like she was spaced.
Donna looks like she's on tranquilizers
Donna Douglas did just fine. She wasn't a bad player at all except for the word "roar." She looked like she wasn't feeling well at all! What a lot of people missed in this comments section was the fact that Donna Douglas had a lot of lightning rounds and if she was as bad as a lot of people claimed she was, then she would not have had a lot of lightning rounds. That's common sense which a lot of people here in the comments section didn't have.
Word was Cattle and Donna Said, "Horses"...
She nearly got up and left the studio floor with her team mate and Alan had to stop her.
@rossdelain1645 First, that's not true. Second, the word "teammate" is one word- not two, and third, Allen Ludden's first name is spelled "Allen-, not "Alan."
@@lynettepalecek3141 Listen Choocheeface you know perfectly well what point I was trying to make , stop trying to pretend day is night and vice versa.
Donna Douglas is normally an excellent player, she's off her mark here and looks ill in the close up shots.
Baloney, just brain farts
This was a Tuesday. She was gone the next episode (ua-cam.com/video/NrZDE_0nhoU/v-deo.html). Ludden claims she was called back to CA, but since they usually filmed a week's worth in a day, it's possible she was feeling badly.

@@joeambrose3260 SHUT UP YOU MORON!! SHE WASN'T FEELING WELL AT ALL! ANY 5 YEAR OLD CAN TELL THAT!! SHE WAS A STAR SO SHE HAD PEOPLE HELP HER BACKSTAGE LOOK GOOD!
Something's clearly wrong. How could anyone not think of clues for Roar? How about Lion, and then Sound? So very easy, but she just blanked----very sad.
lion sound roar dah
SHE WASN'T FEELING WELL AT ALL!
Donna Douglas struggled with most of the clues and gave words that didn't make much sense.
A couple of brain farts, that's all. Are you related to Jack ?
This was a Tuesday. She was gone the next episode (ua-cam.com/video/NrZDE_0nhoU/v-deo.html). Ludden claims she was called back to CA, but since they usually filmed a week's worth in a day, it's possible she was feeling badly.
Right. Repeating the clue "horses" for "cattle" was ridiculous.
I was impressed with 'coquette' for 'flirt'. Excellent clue, and not one I would have thought of.
@Daisy. No she didn't except for the word "roar." It was crystal clear that Donna Douglas wasn't feeling well at all.
Donna was consistently pretty good in the main rounds but SUCKS in the lighting round-over multiple episodes!
This was a Tuesday. She was gone the next episode (ua-cam.com/video/NrZDE_0nhoU/v-deo.html). Ludden claims she was called back to CA, but since they usually filmed a week's worth in a day, it's possible she was feeling badly.
I disagree with you completely except for the word "roar."
@@lynettepalecek3141 in the main I agree with you. Many in this thread say they thought she looked a bit unwell or off that day, which could well be part of the problem. Every once in a while she would blank. But that happens to a number of otherwise good players.
She was FAR better than Bob Crane who ALWAYS kept freezing in the lightening round, eating up time saying um, um and shouting the same clue instead of a modifier, like for the nickel, shouting at his partner five, Five, FIVE!!! when the halfwit should have added in his next clue ‘cents’ followed by ‘coin’ if she still needed another prompt.
And then there were players who I would have thought would be genius based on the characters they often played, but instead were hopeless, like Martin Landau, who was absolutely crap at both guessing and thinking up decent clues. He reminds me of actors who do commercials on TV, ‘I’m not a scientist (that’s so true, just watch him play Password), but I play one on TV’. Oddly, he and his wife (Barbara Bain) were beautifully compatible at Password, completely hopeless in exactly the same way.
@@alexrafe2590 You're right.
A bit loose with the rules…..?…
When Jack Cassidy did the lightning round, there were rules that were not followed.
Betsy is so pretty.
That was very strange she couldn't come up with the word for Roar. She couldn't come up with their or lion what was going on with her
SHE WASN'T FEELING WELL AT ALL! THAT WAS EXTREMELY OBVIOUS!
Betsy is rather cute, almost a more modern look than the '60s.
Time traveler?
Her hairstyle and dress scream 1960s, so I don't think so... 😉
She's still "slim and trim" and looking great, well into her 70s.
@@lclarkwells You know her?
@@TommygunNG Yes, I know her through her son.
@@lclarkwells Awesome.
Please pass along my post, and tell her I'm sorry I came along a generation late.
I just watched 2 Password shows in a row with Donna Douglas, including this one, and she did not win a single lightning round for her partner. She is not quick and has no sense of urgency during the one-minute limit. And she just sits there with no clue word for "roar." Really? Will go watch another with players who get it.
Cut her some slack. Perhaps she was daydreaming about Max. Insane was a good clue for crazy, the contestant blew it
This was a Tuesday. She was gone the next episode (ua-cam.com/video/NrZDE_0nhoU/v-deo.html). Ludden claims she was called back to CA, but since they usually filmed a week's worth in a day, it's possible she was feeling badly.
Yep. Roar = lion. Should have been simple.
@@TommygunNG On a side note, it's amusing how the contestants sometimes gave a sly wink to the fact that all the episodes were filmed in a single day, saying things like, 'Yep, I had a great night's sleep last night!'
@@djr6876 That was the only bad mistake that she made.
17:54, Donna Douglas is not good for the Lightening Rod, she's thinks too long!
Donna was still in ditzy hillbilly mode?
Singer'I think I love U' David Cassidy looks a lot like his dimpled face Dad. Strong Genetics including alcoholism like Diabetes passed down 2 family members. Jack Cassidy passed out drunk on the couch with a cigarette in his hand. Died in the fire crawling his way 2 the door from smoke inhalation.!
He said other game sometimes they get by with stupid stuff. You're not supposed to use two words
I want Betsy's hairdo.
Jack cheats a lot.
The only things Jack Cassidy couldn't beat were booze and cigarettes. RIP his crispy corpse (1976). The original Great Santini (no - not Robert Duvall - 1979).
well he certainly knew how to beat children. At least his own.
I'm wondering if Donna Douglas is pregnant here. Yes, she is a clever PW participant, but has always fallen short in the "lightening round."
It's worth noting that back in the day on such game shows as PASSWORD, the male contestants were usually asked what the did for a living (as in a paying job) and the female contestants, most of them not being expected to work at ANY job, were asked what they did during their free or spare time (as in a hobby or pastime). How SEXIST, even back in the 1960s!!!
Pine Delgado Actually, Allen Ludden knew in advance if the female worked or not. When a professional woman appeared, he'd ask "So you're a working girl?" With housewives, he knew to ask about her hubby or her hobbies.
You have to remember at that time you had very few two-income households unlike that being very common today. It was as noted known ahead of time they knew whether the woman worked or not. That would change later on but was not the case that much at the time this aired.
@@metropromise5915 They knew to avoid awkward situations.
"Sexist"? Nah, just a sign of the times. Crawl back under your rock, LIBTARD.
Given the era, it would have been very strange (and possibly even insulting) to ask every woman who appeared on the show what she did for a living. The majority of them would have responded that they were housewives. Ludden knew beforehand what each contestant 'did', and tailored his questions accordingly. I've seen plenty of shows, by the way, where he asked the men about their hobbies. I'm a feminist but don't get upset when I'm viewing something almost 60 years old that doesn't reflect 2022 attitudes.
So the special guests made between 3-5 grand to appear on this show, around 6 grand or more a week, not bad back then.
