He’s not a creeper gooning on an underage, blind student. They are both adults moving in different circles who fall in love from beyond arms length. Despite his feelings, he assumes she can’t love him due to the barrier her disability poses. Yet throughout the video, we see her acting, dancing, living alone, sculpting, all activities one might assume would be prohibitive for her. In the end, he learns she loves him too and they break through the barrier. At the time this song came out, I had developed feelings for a girl from afar. I admired everything about her, but there were other kinds of barriers which made me think it could never happen. My feelings were very strong but very pure. I ultimately went for broke and told her how I felt. Happily and surprisingly, she felt the same. This song is sappy, maybe even corny in a way, but it reflected how I felt at the time and it meant a lot.

“How did they get away with making this video?”
In the past, people did not always assume the worst and then try to prevent the worst by prohibiting anything which could be construed as leading to the assumed bad conclusion.
I was in high school when this video came out. We assumed these were adults and if she wasn’t interested, even though he was in love with her, she would just say no. Then he would suck it up and move on. Not creepy, just life.

Guys, I love you bunches, so I have to ease your minds and tell you that this is definitely not a high school setting. 😊 No one thought this was creepy in the 80s. As a high school girl in the 80s, I definitely saw it as a college setting with two adults experiencing unrequited love. Keep up the great work! ❤️

It does seem to clearly be a college setting with the more casual set up of the classes, BUT the lockers do make one think of high school. I've never seen any college that had lockers (except when they use it as the joke that colleges don't have lockers, like on Community). I'm not doubting that it was college because of the lockers, I'm just saying the lockers were a weird choice.

Hello Squad, You have to remember the times are different now than they were when this song originally came out. And that's something you will need to consider when reacting to any of the songs prior to today's current situations. Though I can understand how you would feel seeing this now in 2021, but when this came out back in the early '80s it was thought of as endearing....40 years can definitely change the perception of a then sweet song/video. At that time we also looked at it as she being a college and not a high school student. We thought it was lovely that he loved her so much and saw past her perceived disability.🙂

And also the style of music videos back then were far different; many musicians tried to make almost mini movies with some of the videos and of course starring themselves. Sometimes they worked better then others. This was never meant to be a much older man and an underage girl, but a older disabled young woman at an arts school with a likely younger professor but unfortunately even then Lionel was not too young.
Definitely was not intended to be creepy but two people that both had feelings for each other despite differences and disabilities.
(The video itself is not what the songs about but rather the artist and producers of back then trying to create an interesting video that people would possibly sit through and watch again and again, there being no metrics, likes, or retweets for vids)

When he looks in at her class, he finds that she has made a perfect clay model of his head. Fun fact, this is the guy Kenny Rodgers was talking about when he sang Lady in one of your reaction videos. Lionel Richie wrote the song. It is a college of some kind, but she is clearly in her 20s and he is in his 30s at the time. Also, some think he is stalking her in the video but he isn't. He is singing his feelings and what he is actually seeing is what she is doing or may be doing in his mind or when they interact on campus. When she is at home or doing her art class, Lionel isn't there. This is a visual context of what we all are wondering when in love, where they are- what they are doing. Etc. This is the problem with people being exposed to garbage all the time, they can't tell context from actual bad behavior or speech. :) Generally speaking.

Now I will introduce you to a South Korea crossover vocal harmony group called “ Forestella”They are a 4 male crossover harmony group from South Korea. When they performed their first song ( the Freddy Mercury classic“ Bohemian Rhapsody”) it catapulted them to international stardom and they now have millions of followers worldwide. They were all at one time solo performers. One has a very deep bass/baritone voice. Another, a high operatic voice, and the other two group members (who were also solo performers) combine to render a confluence of absolute total passion and performed live on stage in front of thousands of fans. When you have 4 members and the best vocal harmony group in the world, well. ( all I can say is have your Kleenex handy)
Some of their other songs I recommend are Simon & Garfunkel classic “The Sound Of Silence”, Guardian “ Angel” that will lift your spirits and transport you to another world-especially during these troubled covid times.
And the hauntingly beautiful “ hijo de la luna”
But “ Le Suis” remains my all time favorite. I’ve watched it 5 times and each and every time it moves me to my depths.
All love from Miami Beach , Florida,

When he was young, Richie watched beautiful women walk past but was too shy to talk to them. He thought to himself, "Hello, is it me you're looking for." Years later he started to write a song using the phrase but got stuck and gave up, but his record producer liked the line and urged him to finish it. VERY similar to the backstory of James Blunt's 'You're Beautiful'; singing about the moment he realized he was in love with a stranger on public transport due to her undeniable beauty.

While I agree with this, I do get why some would call it creepy. There's very little direct indications that Laura is not, in fact a high school girl. The middle part where she's at home is the best and even then, it's kind of tricky. The fact that it was filmed in a high school did not help the image at all.

    • @godaistudios

@@korimiller379 Only the lockers gives any kind of suggestion that it's a high school, but even in my local community college there are metal lockers available. It's also worth noting that the actress was 26 years old at the time it was filmed and it's pretty clear looking at the other students that they are young adults as well, but if you really wanted direct evidence that it's not high school, look at the curriculum shown. This is a performing arts college. We have drama, dance, sculpture and so forth.
While you can find some art focused high schools these days, they are fairly uncommon, and were even more rare back then.

Well said, Brad. All these references to "creepy" reminded me of two songs way back in my childhood; Music to Watch Girls By and Standing on the Corner (Watching All the Girls Go By). These were big hits but one would almost go to jail now for doing something like this. Although I have never done this, I can remember when guys would give the girls a "wolf whistle" of appreciation. Maybe I'm wrong but it almost always seemed like they took it as a compliment. I actually had a woman at work affirm to me that she took it that way when a guy did that to her. It seems like it was a "Wonderful World" back then and the world now is so full of intolerance and offenses.

I never saw this video as anything but a nice romantic ballad. back in the 80's there were more people going places like community centers. There was no internet, no social media. People would actually go out into the world and experience things and meet different people for themselves. I remember in the 1970's a speaker from ITT came to our school and told us that in the future people would be able to shop from home, play games on computers, watch movies from home, and never go outside. I remember thinking how absurd and sad that concept was.

He said it was about a young girl that lived in the same apartment building that was being mistreated, but the Official Video is...well something different. I really hate when young people say “this video is creepy he is following her to her classes”.
It’s fucking video art. He’s not literally following her. The video is symbolic, showing us (the viewer) how he dreams about her. How he wishes he could be close to her and touch her. The video shows us that by showing clips of him following, but he’s not there in reality following her. If he were, all the people in the hallways, would be ‘reacting’ to the fact that some guy is walking down the halls singing.

Amber, he wasn't creeping out on her. Love wants what it wants. This is NOT like a high school teacher going out with a teenager. Both of them are adults, and he never pursues the relationship. In fact, he even tries to avoid it, possibly BECAUSE he doesn't want to seem creepy, but his heart is still full of love for her. This is the problem with the cancel culture of today, and we need to stop it now. Both are entitled to love whoever they want only, his predicament is that he can't say anything to her ... it HAS to be her call FIRST (because he IS her teacher). It is a BEAUTIFUL video and he describes everything perfectly. Please, read on ...
One last thing I will say, hoping to convince you ... this was a worldwide video, accepted by everyone. If it were not so, they would not have made it. In fact, it was a MAJOR hit. We have got to pump the brakes on suspecting everyone of the worst things. Everything he did in the video was fine, even by today's standards. It's just that we, as a society have been brainwashed to think everyone is a pervert, while allowing REAL perverts to continue doing what they do, for decades, and the establishment makes excuses for it so, when a legitimate, out-in-the-open, above board love story comes along, everyone wants to pounce on it. This is WRONG and it must stop !!!

@@rextrek Thank you !!! It's nice to see someone still has some brains and isn't afraid to stand up to the mob. This is a very beautiful song, and I'm getting to my wits' end with the cancel culture trying to kill everything that's good in the world.
In the beginning, you say to yourselves, well ok, I guess we have some room to accommodate you. But then, like always, you give an inch, and they take a mile. They think, "Hey, they're weak and afraid of us, so let's take advantage of it and get more than we deserve". Enough's enough, right ???

@@rextrek Yeah, 63 here, and though I see your point and can agree some things can be changed, I disagree that things like this video, which were very much out in the open, are as bad as people are making them out to be.
I was very much into music back then, playing guitar myself awhile before this song, and I remember, never thinking twice about this as being anything other than sweet and beautiful. No, this is twisted indoctrination that our youth (and some of our elders) are being brainwashed into believing is bad ... like dating and calling a woman a "woman" ... or "she/her". This is just sick, and they are teaching everyone this divisiveness purely to gain more control over us.
Forgive me for what follows, but you got me thinking about this again.
A LOT of what people think about things has and should always include what they know about the people involved. Lionel Richie has had a LONG career with enough history ... before and after ... to know his full intentions. No, this was just a very romantic song, on camera for all to see.
Had this been Jeffrey Epstein, Bill Cosby or even Bill Clinton or any of the other people that have come to our attention lately, well that would be one thing, because they did their dirty deeds behind the scenes, for eons, where their friends and (mostly rich) influential people covered and made excuses for their indiscretions ... because those perverts were their friends, or were making them money. This video does NOT represent ANY of that kind of stuff.
This is where and what cancel culture has brought us to ... judging the entire planet for something that was clearly, perfectly fine, and also judging a period in history using today's twisted sensibilities. Today, men can't even call women "women" anymore, let alone talk to them, which the reactions to this video demonstrate. I have to stop now though, because I have studied this phenomenon in great detail, and it's making me frustrated and angry just thinking about it. Sorry about that.
Bottom line, " some things need tweaking" ... yes, that's true, but this video doesn't represent 1 of them.

I saw this video so many times in the 80s, and I never thought of it as creepy. I guess its the age we live in now. I always thought this was either some type of art school/college or school for the blind, when I would watch this. I never thought it was high school just because everyone there seems way older than teenagers. So I never thought of it like this. I always thought it was the sweetest video and the song is the sweetest as well. I really love "Stuck on You" by Lionel Ritchie. I think that is my favorite and then you can't skip the unbelievable duet with Diana Ross "Endless Love." Yall knocked it out of the park tonight with three of my favorites!!!! Thanks!!!! It is too sad if we look at everything through the lens that colors our perspective today. Don't waste the beauty that's in front of you.

Love it, when Amber closed her eyes. It's the way music should be heard. Especially for music before 1984, when MTV took off and was solidified to be the next music medium. Most videos really don't have anything to do with the songs original intent (or lyrics) to begin with. Videos became another part of the business that the artist had to work on, coming up with concepts for the video.

    • @centuryrox

Exactly. That's why I always recommend first time listeners to a song to go with a lyrics video, or just audio only. Most times, the video adds nothing to the song, and many times video takes a lot away from the song, or leaves the viewer confused.
