One of their best songs even without Lionel...A great tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson...May they Rest In Peace...Lionel had already started his solo career by the time they recorded this song...The first guy that sang in this video ( Walter " Clyde " Orange ) was the original lead singer of The Commodores even when Lionel was with them at the groups beginning...Then Lionel took over as lead singer and the rest is history...They had another lead singer mainly during their College days named James Ingram, but he left for Vietnam.
Yessir! 🖖🏼
I loved the part when referring to Jackie Wilson the lyrics say "your love lifted us higher and higher". I always wondered if that was a reference to his song "Higher and Higher"
@@knoxscott65able 100%
Disagree...dont care for this song
I thought for a second 'Wait, James Ingram was in the Commodores?' But I looked it up and it wasn't THE James Ingram, just a guy with the same name :-)
This song was a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. Two soul singers of my generation (or anyone who's a baby boomer). I'll always miss them two, glad I was born at the right time and saw Marvin twice. High school when What's Going On and Let's Get It On were out, born in 1953. My generation are lucky. Marvin's core audience were us teens or 20s something back then
Lionel Richie was working on his solo career when this song came out.
I would love to see a reaction to Lonely Teardrops
absolutely yes
You definitely need to do more Marvin Gaye & Jackie Wilson on your channel
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing your memory 💖🦋
Lionel had left the band at this point and was well into his solo career. Great song!
Marvin Gaye was killed by his father in argument, in 1984, when this song was conceived
Diana Ross also had her last Top 10 hit with "Missing You," another Gaye Tribute, in 1985
This was their first big hit after Lionel had left the group, I think it was one of the Commodores best ever. Love this song. To see them live is like going to heaven.
This song won 1985 Best R&B Grammy for a Group. This was their first song without Lionel. A tribute song for Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson who both died young. This was their only Number 1 song after Lionel left. Great tune. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I love how the song pays tribute to two legends, Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson (both of whom died - quite young - in 1984, the year before this song came out). And yes, this is the post-Lionel Commodores, where the vocals were shared by Richie's replacement, J.D. Nicholas, and drummer Walter Orange (who happened to be the same man who did the vocals for "Brick House"). For your next Commodores song, I recommend "Oh No".
they'll love Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops" and "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher"!!
@@surlechapeau Absolute classics.
Unfortunately this was the last hit The Commodores had as well. Richie was the main song writer and vocalist.
"Oh No" is one of my all-time favorite songs.
Amber has a great mind and a big heart, she’s always spot on with her analogies of the lyrics and meanings of great songs! Thank you both for finally listening to this instant classic! I’m sure Lionel knew the Commodores was in good hands when he heard this. Nobody’s saying that the second lead singer is then new lead singer J.D. Nicholas. He is still a member of the group to this day.
“Rock and Roll Heaven” and “Night Shift” are such great tributes to singers who are gone but not forgotten. Beautiful song!
Was rock and roll heaven an original by the righteous brothers I think?
@@terryconnelly484 It was. I love the tribute songs. “The Day The Music Died”, that one about Elvis in Memphis. Poignant!
Diana Ross did a very sweet one about Marvin, "Missing You". Another great tribute song "American Pie" by Don McLean was about Buddy Holly, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens. I'm always a ball of tears at the end of La Bamba when his mom finds out he died. Same thing with Selena.
@@terryconnelly484 "Rock and Roll Heaven" was first recorded by the band "Climax" in '73, but it didn't really climb the charts; then, the very next year, 1974, when The Righteous Brothers reformed, they took it on and it rose to #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics were also updated to include Jim Croce(loved him!) and Bobby Darin who had both died in '73.
Over time, the lyrics were periodically updated to include other legendary singers, such as Elvis, John Lennon, Keith Moon, etc.
Don't forget about "Wish You Were Here."
The 2nd co-lead singer is J.D. Nicholas who was brought in after Ritchie left.
Walter Orange ( the 1st singer in this) was always in the band. He sang " brick house" and some of the funkier ones and played drums, while Lionel sang the ballads. They brought in an extra singer after Lionel left circa 83
Actually, Richie left at the end of '81 after he recorded "Endless Love" with Diana Ross. After that dropped and became such a hit, he embarked on his solo career, which we all know has been a success. Nonetheless, this tune proves The Commodores were still a solid group capable of generating great material and hits.
Lionel went solo in 1982. Marvin Gaye died in 1983. Jackie Wilson died 1984 and Nightshift was released in 1985.
Nightshift was a song I loved hearing when it came out. I was a new Dad and was actually working the night shift at the local factory. Trust me, every operator had his boombox radio and got through the night listening to some sweet sounds.
😃👍
I remember when you guys did "Brick House" and Lionel was standing in the back and you didn't even realize he was in the band. lol.
"Missing You" Diana Ross, was written, composed, and produced by Lionel Richie as a tribute to Marvin Gaye,
We saw and heard them live,..just like your hearing☆☆☆☆☆🎼🥰
Lionel Richie did in part also have a tribute for Marvin with Diana Ross' "Missing You", which he wrote.
That first singer sang "Brick House." And... Bruce Springsteen just released a beautiful cover of this beautiful song.
A suggestion if I can...The group Switch.. Teddy Pendergrass
Marvin Gaye "I'll Be Doggone"..R.I.P. Marvin🙏❤
Love this song. It's a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.
Lionel went solo to an incredible career. Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson died the same year. (1984). The Commodores were awesome, and this song is a beautiful tribute to Gaye and Wilson. Marvin Gaye's death was especially tragic...being shot and killed by his father. Horrible Loss.
Oh my God! I never knew that was how Marvin Gaye died! Whoah!! what a tragedy. :(
Nossa, eu não sabia
Jackie wasn't much better his fiance shot him...
Oh, man. I was just listening to this. RIP, Marvin and Jackie. Y'all need to react to their music.
Saw Lionel Richie live when he came to London a few years ago ❤️
One of the all time classics! Great song, better lyrics. Damn, these guys could do it right.
This was from 1985. It was the Commodores first hit after Lionel left the group for his solo career. Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson both died in 1984 and this was a tribute to them.
Great reaction!! Walter Orange, the first singer, was always in the group. He was the lead on their monster hit “Brick House”. The 2nd singer, Skyler Jett, was Lionel’s replacement after he went solo. This was their first hit after Lionel left.
J.D. Nicholas sang the second verse.
Jay/Amber, you'll love their "Three Times A Lady"!!! I predict "Three Times A Lady" will be your favorite Commodores song!! (With Lionel!!)
edit- You'll love Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops" and "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher"!!
Absolutely 💯
THIS^.Such an emotional powerhouse.
This is my favorite all-time Commodores song (and that's sayin' somethin', because Easy, Brick House, etc. were FAN-tastic!). There's just something about this song that's legendary.
I love the metaphor of 'Nightshift' as applied to these iconic artists, Marvin and Jackie, both of whom died the year before this song was released in tribute to them (and which was The Commodores only big hit after Lionel left the group). The metaphor calls to mind former dayshift workers with whom we were once all on the same schedule, in sync and able to see and enjoy them whenever we wanted, but who are now working nights, out of phase with the rest of us, now existing for us only in fond memories of the times we once shared. It's also interesting to depict the afterlife as being at night, these incredible talents no longer bathed in the sunshine they once enjoyed with us, but now performing in some amazing band all together, playing those sweet sounds through the night while we sleep, supplying us the soundtrack of our dreams.
Perfect metaphor, working on so many levels!
Beautifully said!
Lionel left the Commodores in 1981. Love this tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. It brings tears to my eyes now just like it did then.
Love this song - always sing along when I hear it on the radio. Bass guitar, echoes, harmonies....absolutely class.
Thanks guys for reacting to this special and beautiful classic .
R.I.P Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.
The first time I heard this song, it squeezed my heart and tears came out of my eyes. I knew it was a special tribute to a loss of people so special.
Someone cuttin onions again.
It gets to me every time I hear it...
One of my favorites 🎶🎤
If I remember, this is after Lionel left for his solo career. This is probably my favorite song of theirs.
That man is Walter Orange and HE is the heart and soul of the commodores!! He was the lead singer and Lionel was his co-singer.
The second singer is English from London .. funny hearing him sing like an "American" then hearing him talk
The cool part about this song is that in the Marvin part, they mention a bunch of Marvin's song titles; and in the Jackie part, they mention his song titles. They're in the lyrics like Easter eggs to find. ❤️❤️
IAM so slow Today was the first Time I noticed the What's Going On connection! XooX
@@lifewuzonceezr ha ha. Keep listening closely, you'll hear multiple other song references from Marvin and Jackie in each of their sections of the song. They did it so smooth that it's easy to gloss right over. 😉
I think I recommended this one- one of my favorite recordings of all time!
This song came out in 1985. Lionel had left a few years prior. This song was a tribute to Marvin Gaye who had died in 1984, and to Jackie Wilson.
Bruce Springsteen did a cover of this on his latest album and has been performing it every night on his current tour.
Lionel left the commodores back in 1982. JD Nicholas was his replacement! Walter orange was the first singer on the song. He is the group's drummer and was the lead singer on Brickhouse!
This was the Commodores only hit after Lionel Richie left. This song was recorded after Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson passed and was dedicated to them!
I also like Animal Instinct from the same album.
'Solitaire' was another hit from that album.
Going to the bank was also a big party dance floor hit
This is actually one of my favs by The Commodores, great pick
💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽🎶🎶💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 Lionel had left for solo I loved the Commodores even after Lionel left!!
This was sung by Walter Orange, after Lionel left the group - but an amazing song for all that.
Lionel left the band in 1982, to pursue his solo career. This song was released 1985.
OMG!! I haven't heard this song for at least thirty years or more!! Beautiful!! Thanks folks!
This was a tribute song to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. Lionel was no longer in the group.
Lionel left the group in 1982 to pursue his solo career. The group continued on without him and this song dropped in 1985 paying homage to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson!
Being a child of the 80s, this song is the one I think of when I hear the Commodores name, even though they made SO much great music.
This is after Lionel went solo - you should check out some of his solo stuff ("Dancing on the Ceiling", "Running With the Night", "Truly", "You Are", and his duet with Diana Ross "Endless Love")
Amber...How can someone as young and beautiful as you have a 1,000 year old soul??? Both of you are very special humans and we love your reactions. God bless you and your family and stay groovy!! Peace and love to the rest of my "family" here.
Easily one of my Top Ten songs EVER by any artist/group! I have this album and the 12 inch single on vinyl. I CAN NOT imagine life without this song!
I think you would love *Arthur Conley's, "Sweet Soul Music" (1967)* which was another shout-out to great musicians. Upbeat, fun, and impossible to sit still through!
The song features a lead vocal from drummer Walter Orange, who had sung lead years earlier on "Brick House". Lionel Richie's replacement, J.D. Nicholas, sings the second verse and then Orange and Nicholas share lead vocals on the remaining choruses.
The first verse mentions Gaye's song "What's Going On", while the second verse mentions Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops" ("Say you will"), "Baby Workout" and "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher".
My favourite Commodores song. Brings a tear to my eyes even after all these years.
the great black singers that have passed away are in this song and about their contribution to music
I haven't heard this song in over 30 years, and here I am crying like it was yesterday. I was on my way to work one day back in '84 when I turned on the radio and What's Goin On was playing, or so I thought. It was a medley of Marvin Gaye's music. Then the News reported said that Marvin had been killed. It was a shock that darkened the whole day.
One of my all time favorites! ❤
Such an underrated song when it came out in the 80s. Walter's voice is sooo smooth and JT is a perfect compliment. Glad Walter got another shot to take over on lead after Lionel.
I have a very eclectic taste in music, Rock, jazz, metal, Blues.I have always loved Lionel Richie and The Commodores.Great musical talent.Keep it up Jordan and Amber.God bless.🥁☮👍
A beautiful song and a beautiful tribute to two of the finest soul singers who have ever lived.
My FAVORITE❤️❤️❤️
Such a glorious posthumous tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson! Where’s Lionel? He left to embark on his incredible solo journey! This song was a huge hit. The Commodores had another incredible post- Lionel Richie song: Only You. Hope you can give it a listen!
He also sang Brick House with the Commodores and on I feel sanctified among others
One thing I really enjoy about you two is the way you bring new perspectives to my view of music I've known for years. The idea that these legends are helping common workers get through the night shift... I love that insight! Keep doing what you're doing.
OMG, be still my heart. Can it ever be greater than the Commodores. Never. mmm-mm-mmm
What an amazing song. I've loved it for years. No matter what I am doing, I am stopping to listen to this!
This was from the 80's, and it was essentially a reunification of The Commodores. They re-assembled as a bit of a surprise. Lionel was well into his solo career by this time.
Oh this song would change the mood in the room. Just awesome. Love it!❤
I love this song. Bruce Springsteen just did a cover recently. I was very surprised. He did a great job
Lionel Richie had left the group for a solo career by the time this song came out in 1985. This song was a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who had both passed away a year before this song was released.
One of The Commodores' best songs. If you like the song "easy" listen to "Still" great song and you'll get your Lionel fix
Just a bit of gear info for Jay- regarding the guitar, the portion you're talking about is called the headstock. Instruments like in this video are referred to as "headless." The tuning machines/knobs are designed differently and located on the body with a headless guitar/bass.
Headless designs are for multiple reasons, including instrument balance- to avoid "neck dive" by reducing weight at that end so the guitar doesn't tend to rotate if the players lets go of it for some reason, like a player also doing keyboards.
One of my Dad's favorite songs .... passed 3 years ago ... listen to it often
Oh, man, I always loved this song!! Grew up roller skating to this! Every Tuesday night at Skatalong USA!
Lionel left the Commodores in 1981. He did a duet with Diana Ross, Endless Love, and the next year had his first solo album.
@Rob Squad this was the best song they did without Lionel Ritchie. Amazing tone, about so many LEGENDS gone to soon and how to deal with that hurt, grief, pain and angst. Was on the radio for many many years. Amazed you all NEVER heard this but I say that often lol and it is what (after the two of you obviously) what MAKES the channel seeing you all see classics we have loved 5 or 10 or 15 or 20 or 25 years.... and seeing YOU both hear or see it for the first time.
I love this song. It is incredible.
Whew, this song hits so different having lost my dad in 2021. I can picture him singing this. Couldn't even finish the video. Amazing song, though, glad y'all discovered it.
A bittersweet tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. Almost makes one cry.
“Three Times A Lady”
By the Commodores is a beautiful love song!
This song is an absolute piece of art. Always been my favorite
THANK YOU!! LOVE THIS SONG!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
In 1984, "Night Shift" and Diana Ross' "Missing You (which ironically was written and produced by Lionel Richie) were great tributes to Marvin, Jackie and so many Motown stars who had passed away.
Walter Orange is lead singer and drummer who sang and wrote half the songs during the time that Lionel was in the group.
This was actually The Commodores first hit song after Lionel Ritchie left the band to go solo. Marvin Gaye was killed in April of 1984 and The Commodores released this song in January of 1985. It hurt my heart the first time I heard it at 18 and it still does today. It’s a beautiful tribute to Marvin and to Jackie Wilson who died of complications from pneumonia the same year (1984). You guys should check out Nothing But Blue Skies & Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher by Jackie Wilson sometime.
One of my favorites songs of the era. So great. So nice. So touching.
This was their first hit AFTER Lionel left to become a solo artist
Recently covered by Bruce Springsteen on his latest album. He's playing it during his current concerts.
I am excited to hear it Saturday in KC.
Lionel had already left the group
Sometimes I forget how great all the music was in the 70's. Having grown up in tye 70s listening to the top 40 every Sunday. Man I'm old. Lol
This is the Commodores post Lionel Ritchie! He’d left for his solo career which was huge in the eighties! The Commodores made music after Lionel left but they were never the same as before for me! This song was a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson after the deaths! The Nightshirt was the afterlife! Diana Ross also had a hit song in tribute to Marvin Gaye after his tragic untimely death in 1984, called, “Missing You’!❤❤
"May,I have this dance!"(Class of 71)
Don't forget, the Commodores were a band. Lionel Richie was a solo artist. They remained a band after he left.
This was the Commodores first single after Lionel went solo. The singer who did the tribute to Jackie Wilson took Lionel Richie place. The other 4 members were part of the original group with Lionel
One of the Commodores (Milan) was a good family friend before he passed away in 2006. In 2000 my dad was having a function/gathering at the house. I prefered to stay in the garage to work on my car. Milan came into the garage to check on my progress and we ended up talking about cars and life for a bit. Great gentleman. Great musician.
This was a tribute song to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. At the time they did this song, Lionel was a solo artist.
This was done in '85 to honor and pay tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson who both passed away like 4 months apart the year before. Lionel had left the group to start his solo career in '82. The first singer is Walter Orange who also sang lead on one of the Commodores biggest hits "Brick House".
Hey you guys, no Lionel indeed, he already left the band and went on a succesful solo-career. This song (Nightshift) came out in 1984 or 85.
The System - Don't Disturb This Groove
