This type of flying looks a helluva lot more interesting than asphalt to asphalt hamburger runs. Especially combined with camping or fishing off a sandbar or beach.
The first Cessna anything I can excited about! No cabane, a bit less drag, always a good thing. An incredible spread between the stall and top speed, with a huge useful load, very cool.
This is like the flying I did back in the 1960s. Low and slow and just plain fun. I remember flying from Vandalia, MO to Mexico, MO for fun. They had a restaurant in Mexico. I don't know if they still have one but they do have an aircraft company now. I hope to visit the Zenith factory someday.
Really nice 👍 video Bobby. And a really nice 👍 plane. It looked like a great day for flying. Keep making these flying doodles videos and we’ll keep watching! Thanks for sharing.
Hi, absolutely amazing series you have. You should also release these wonderful series on DVD, or blueray. I'm sure many would have these plane series on the shelf at home. I would at least have a collection on my shelf .. You are calm, and a really wonderful character. You are a natural talent like a television character. that, you do not have your own TV show, is completely strange, in my opinion.
Stick a set of VG's on the wings and a set of 35's then it should beat the yellow one. Angle of attack and airflow adhesion is the key to getting off short. Lovely looking aircraft
Unfortunately it’s not that simple. The reason why the Cub is such a good STOL plane is because it was designed for a 35 HP engine that could barely get it off the ground. The big.. fat.. USA-35B airfoil and the huge arm of the tail feathers allowed it to generate a lot of lift with no flaps and get the tail flying early.. all things the Super Cub inherited which it added flaps and power to. The Taylorcraft, Aeronca, Cessna 140.. they were all designed to go as fast as they could on the available horsepower. That meant NACA 4 and 5 digit airfoils. Cessna was able to add flaps and later big Fowler flaps to make up for the airfoils shortcomings at low speeds and even later the factory STOL cuffs and hoerner tips etc but all bandaids compared to an airfoil designed from the outset for low speeds. You have to get into Helio Courier style slats to have the absolute best of both worlds.
@@calvinnickel9995 You are 100% correct you really know your stuff. The Cub airframe is the gold standard of slow flight and nothing compares. I've had the opportunity to fly various Cessna single engine products with almost every available modification and they dont compare in the slightest. I got my commercial last year and spent the spring and summer with a banner towing and aerial photography operation, we had a Reims Rocket, C182P and a C185 with a IO-550 all with STOL kits and VG's. I thought they were excellent on short fields until i flew a Pa18-150 completely original with no mods at all, everything felt lazy after flying the supercub. Thank you for your answer
Just found your new channel. Sailing, flying, yes I knew you used to be a pilot. Next you need a bus, travel the country and call the show.. what else… Driving Doodles!
How does this compare to the Bearhawk Patrol? I would think with the flush rivets on the Patrol, it would be faster than the 172 wing. The Cessna Cub looks like a really interesting plane! Thanks for doing the review. Nice job.
The patrol has a huge wing with a massive amount of cord and giant barn door flaps on it. But if you watch the performance of 172 with a stol kit. And then imagine it’s in a 900 to 1000 pound airplane not a 1700 pound airplane you get the idea that it could be a really good performer. Also building the wings for the bearHawk is a lot of work, and there are quite a few 172 wings lying around.
What an interesting novel aircraft! Wonder how many hoops they had to jump through to slice two aircraft together. River flying looks like a blast, although I'd definitely insist on a life jacket flying that low over water haha!
The fuselage is a ground up design that was meant to use the Cessna wing from the very start. While it is very similar to a SuperCub, it is not the same. For instance, the fuselage is 10" longer, 2" wider, and 1" taller than a SuperCub.
Pretty sweet set up, that useful load is unbelievable. With that said, I think if you went with a more cub type gear in say the 6” extended gear, you could throw a belly pod in there and actually use that gross... just a thought. Looks sweet thou
yes Andy. The conventional gear would make a pod much more easy to install, but it is still doable. I actually had a discussion recently with Mike Patey and I am currently working on a design. Hopefully I can have something to show very soon!
It would be awesome if someone came on the show with a Cessna 175 Skylark. I’ve never seen one in person and it would be nice to know why someone decided to buy it.
Bobby! Glad to see more flying doodles. As an aspiring private pilot I was curious if the very low stall speed would translate to being safer in a crash? I'm thinking of a catastrophic engine failure at take off which seems to doom a lot of small aircraft. Wouldn't hitting the ground at 12mph almost guarantee you'd walk away with only minor injuries?
Yes, you have an ~81% of walking away with little to no injuries. But, don't keep that in your head. You always want to plan for worst case scenario. Hitting the ground in the sense that your plane is sinking (at the rate of 12 mp/h) will of course mean substantial damage to the landing gear and, depending on how low the floor is, likely damage to the flooring and possibly the rudder peddles. But, don't take this easy. Keep your feet, as in this case, in check and make sure they don't end up getting sandwiched between the flooring and the bottom of the dashboard, because if that does happen you will get stuck ( the metal is normally pretty strong, so it may trap your legs. However, if you mean in the sense that the plane is nosediving, then you want to throttle up and pitch up the nose by any means possible. Of course all of this will depend on the structural integrity of the plane, and how well it was maintained. Always keep the worst in mind and fly safe!
@@spod2998 Thanks for the reply. I watch a lot of AVweb and have learned that a lot of crashes are due to pilot error as well. Since small aircraft do not seem to have incorporated any of the safety lessons learned in the automotive industry, it seems too me that the slower you're going if you crash the better.
Interesting concept using a Cessna wing, not sure of the weight difference from a 172 wing and a STOL'ed Cub wing, bvut the thought occurs; if you're going to use a Cessna wing, why not use a 206 wing with the longer flaps and the more aerodynamic frieze ailerons with a droop kit?
If you had a constant speed prop where you could always cruise at 120MPH, it definitely outperforms a standard Cub, thats even in the speed range of a Scout.

Bobby, when will we see more flying doodles. I am a pilot and a sailor. Also.........when will Taylor be back even if a short while. She is tons of fun
If you love bush planes, check out Mike Patey and his Scrappy and the late Draco. Draco was a beast of a bush plane... and his new one, Scappy, a carbon cub on extreme steroids will be unbeatable.
The wet left tire on one of your shots was a bit of a give away as to what else you didn't capture on the video (which I would have loved to have seen), but don't worry your "secret" is safe with us. LOL :)
Great show Bobby! Have you ever met Stevo1 Kinevo You and he look like you could be cousins. He usually flies the TBM850's in the Bahamas and anywhere in the Southeast. Check him out I know you two guys would make a Super terrific video.
Can anyone elaborate for the ignorant people like myself, what the benefits are of having a Cessna 172 wing on a super cub? I would think that the Cessna wing would be considerably heavier. What am I missing? Also what are your thoughts of putting the same wing on a taylorcraft?
Hi! The Cessna wings are not heavier than the SuperCub wings. They weigh about the same. The reason they are used is because they are plentiful and it’s cuts the build time significantly. The major benefit is that the plane will cruise faster and takeoff/landing distances are lower.
Ummm, Bobby? I watch you're videos for T & A. Where's the bikinis, brah? Never heard of the Cessna Badlands Traveler, but- I dig it. Cub body & 172 wing with stall breaks- schweet!!! I know that cut out the engine sounds, but- that seems to be a well tuned motor nonetheless.

Seems like every single pilot you meet wants nothing more than to share their passion with everyone .
My God, that looked like a blast! This is in the very top of my favorite videos of yours.
I was there for the STOL and it was a great time. Can't wait for the next one.
Oh, Bobby, I didn't know you had this channel until you mentioned it on Sailing Doodles. This is awesome.
I had the pleasure of speaking to Doug this morning and he directed me to this video to check out the plane. What a great guy and an amazing plane.
I’m rewatching every video in this channel! Are there new ones coming?
That’s flyin’ at its purist right there. Great vid Bobby thanks for sharing it with us.

Clint B is the man. Great craftsman. BTW, the prop isn’t carbon fiber, it’s a foam core w/cf outer layer. But yes, still light.
Will you be putting together any more "Flying Doodles" ?
Hope so

That was my thought too. It's hard to compete with 22" of suspension travel.
Ah.....Draco while sitting there in a sling roles his eyes. Haha
Yes, laugh it up my misconscrewed brethren, Pateyisms are one offs, these are attainable!
Come back pls your airplane reviews are great!!
Hope he's ok
