    Bobby,
Thank you for the nostalgia. 50 years ago, I was the first airplane to land (in My Polished & Red Cessna 195 which I went on to own for 42 years) on Justin Time Airport now closed. Also, a dear friend owned Flying S airport. I flew the 195 in the opening ceremonies of DFW Airport. A few years before that (1966) I flew a Piper PA-12 from Kansas City to Portland to LA & back. No Radio at all, all Dead Reckoning. Those were the days when Flying was Flying.

I'm glad we had a chance to meet Tamara... today. :-) She was awesome. So friendly and unassuming yet a very knowledgeable pilot! After watching this, who wouldn't want a Cub (or modern clone) on floats to hit every high country lake for a little fly fishing! Kudos Bobby for the great content.

s1965 last year of High School, I began flight training in Piper PA-18, 115hp Lycoming, Solo at four hours. Got to 32 hours then drafted to Army. Vietnam. Home safe, married and never finished. Great memories. One flight with instructor, with high winds, throttled back at 3000 feet and just above stall, watched ground and.....going backwards on ground...what a sight.

Don't know how I got here but thanks u-tube.
I started flying @ King Aviation in East Taunton Ma. 2200 ft. grass runway.
    (Now "East Taunton municipal A. P ".)
Electric wires crossed one end, 50' trees at the other end.
I started flying in a Aeronca 7EC. When starting X country I switched to the Super cruiser. July 4th 1958 @ Edgar Town airport Martha's Vineyard Ma. took my flight test in the PA12 Super Cruiser.
Holds a soft spot in my heart. It is a cool airplane. Heavy to flair but still cool to fly.
Not to leave out: $12.00 -$16.00 dual, $500.00 total, TO GET MY PP CAA, TICKET. LOL

I towed gliders with a stock PA-18-150. It was a late seventies model if I remember correctly. The seats were really uncomfortable, felt like I was sitting on a board. I had to use a pillow under my butt. Great performer.

I did some tailwheel training on a Supercub at Clacton in England and although it was ok I found a couple of things that I did not like. One was how hard it was to get in and out the other was the high pitch forces and how quick you had to be with the trimmer. I understand that the Carboncub has an electric trim which they state makes things easier. However I did enjoy the experience. Regards, Jim in NI UK

Virtually all of my Super Cub time was towing gliders. They are good tow planes but suffer from poor external vision, there are too many blind spots. But they are good at operating from rough, bumpy strips. The 180 version is also a bit of a pain as there is an avoid band in the middle of the useful RPM range. Top tip 1 - You haven’t finished flying it until the next pilot gets in or you have put it away in the hangar. Top tip 2 - If you do extreme side-slips to the right, open the left hand window.

Cubs and Super Cubs are great little aircraft but they are far from the "Original Bush Plane". The Cub dates to 1938, long after Bush pilots were flying Curtis Jennys, Fokkers, various flying boats. The Norseman flew in 1935 but I do not know if any were bush flying before the end of WW2.

There’s NUTHIN more fun than a Cub! I learned to fly in a rag-tag old Cub. I took my 1st lesson in a J3 and it was love at 1st flight. I was only 14 at the time so I had to kill a bunch of flying time goofing around with my instructor till my 16th birthday but I learned a lot about flying from that. My second hour I made the mistake of asking my instructor if he could spin the airplane. He said sure and we started climbing. This airplane had a 65 hp Continental with a wooden cruise prop tied to the front so it took what seemed like a day and a half to reach altitude. He yelled over his shoulder “How hi can you count?” I being a smart kid said “Uuhh I dunno” he pulled the carb heat idled the throttle and nosed up to a stall. Again he called over his shoulder “ when the nose points at the ground, you start counting every time it makes a complete rotation, got it?” I never answered because by that time we were pointed at the ground going round and round. I counted to 17 and he recovered laughing “ you count pretty good!” I love the Cub.

Wheel landings are the best and most majestic looking, plus, you have more control with crosswinds and turbulence. This was my all time favorite plane to fly, I have a lot of time in one. Used to love playing with crosswinds when landing, by landing on one main gear and then track straight down the centerline of the runway. This is the plane I would do Deadstick landings in, real Deadstick landings. The push button starter was so reliable that if I had a problem landing, while Deadstick, I could start the engine in one second and get out of any trouble -- But I never had any problems. I would also do some aerobatics in it. The only problem was that I could never get it to spin, it was built so stable, unbelievable. Loved this airplane. Flying stick and rudder in a Super Cub made my first landing in a KC-135, with a 20-knot direct crosswind, a piece of cake turning onto final, while the other experienced KC-135 pilots had trouble and ended up doing S-turns to get lined up with the runway.
By the way, Tamara is sooo short.

Yes, I like Cubs. To a degree. They seem to have acquired a mythical reputation that they don't deserve. They land and take off as short as anything else with similar power and similar wing loading and it flies slower than most. It's got no room inside, not much space to carry anything. And crappy visibility And if you're the poor guy who has to fix them (me...) you'll curse them all day long. Everything is a giant pain to access, the control system is horribly archaic etc etc. On a J3, having to remove the engine to remove the boot cowl to get the tank out - stupid design.
Don't get that whole Cub clone thing either; they keep most of the shortcomings an slap an insane price sticker on it.

    • @pauleyplay
      @pauleyplay 2 роки тому

Very well said & I own one. No room, limited range & a few other short comings That is why I have owned a 185 for years. Takes over for the cub when needed. Must not forget the beaver. I had the privilege of flying skydivers with the beaver. Fell in love with it. Little slow for cross country. Overall in 50 years of flying the beaver has a edge by a small margin, What do I know ????
