And this is the 1st video that I saw to start with my journey of playing the bansuri ....
Thanks a lot Sir....
I really appreciate your humility. You don't pretend to be the top of the most. That's a fantastic character.

wow..very nice vedio Sir...i love bonsuri
Sir this video is beautiful but I have very little knowledge about bansuri .Could you please make it more clear to play Sa re ga ma pa like by step by step like first practising of sa for some time only and after that ga and all , this is because I want to learn it and I didn't get the notes properly .because I think for the beginners like me are needed this step by step . And you are playing the bansuri magically , oh it is beautiful.
Ok. I will do a video breaking the beginner steps down further.
Man. That is great. I cannot think of a reason why you should restrict yourself. As long as you are physically comfortable and enjoying yourself, go for it.
excellent, i have just started playing bansuri after seeing ur video.
i was so impressed tht the next day i purchased bansuri after seeing this video.
thank u for ur hard work.

I am beginer to learn flute but I didn't get sound from flute.

respected sir, you are giving a fabulous lesson on flute , i m beginner in flute but beside, i m student of western classical guitar , grade 6 done from Trinity college,
Thank you soooo much for yr prompt reply! The bansuri seems to have become my mission & my passion: my answer to all my questions infact! My teacher - a young college student, is quite impressed by my progress (in a week's time i am able to play the pancham, if that's any indication). This is just to convey to you an idea, not in the least bit to brag :)
I am presently practising on a 21" long flute and hope to go on to playing the E flute soon.. I'll appreciate all the tips from you.
Thankyou

Excellent tutorial. Appreciate you for no unnecessary time wasting talks. You are a true effective teacher. Can you please explain/add 'how to play the notes on higher octaves' like on piano you have c1, c2 & c3. What are the best recognized brand of bansoori. I am new to this and it will help me. Thank you.

Hello,
Thanks for sharing a basic but important lesson. What is your recommendation on
1) which type of flute should be used for teaching small kids- with a straight blowing or side blowing
2) your recommendation on which are the best places to buy this fluate from in US and India?
Thanks you so much in advance.

Bomlik Ngulom Lendo Thanks. I will post more by this weekend.
@srikantaraya Get the flute that you feel most comfortable playing. Longer flutes are more difficult to play.
7 hole flut allows for 3 octaves. 6 hole is 2.5 octaves. Thank you for your video. I cant wait to play my larger flute now.
My pleasure Diya ji.
Sir thanks for teaching how to play the flute. Thanks sir nice video

Pantulu from zambia
thank you. you are the man ! simple lessons like this are hard to find over the internet.
The seventh hole (below) is played it with the leg. When you are sitting, you can cover the hole with your leg or knee.

I am glad you found it useful, Jagdish ji.
I already play the western metal concert flute and all I need is the fingerings for this instrument.
Very informative.Very clear voice and video. can't see the face so don't know whom to thank !! Just that the carnatic flute [ VENU ] is played much differently than the hindusthani [ BANSURI ]. BUT, I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE MANY MORE VIDEOS FROM YOU SIR. THANKS A LOT LOT....
hi iam lingam srinivas from gujarat kutch bhuj professor. love to learn flute.
i thanks for basic flute learning iam very much impress by your way of teaching please guide us more.
Sure, Lingam Ji. Ask any questions you like.
Good point, Menon saheb. Just one minor clarification "When u gradually open the 7th from all 7 closed u get the ma-pa meend. " I think what you meant was you get the Pa-Ma meend. We will be going from PA (all closed) to Ma (7th half open). Thank you for your input.
Thank you sir . Very useful tip you have given . I will start practising it. And very humble of you to say what 7th hole does and giving credit to other learning sites . I think without humbleNess and truthful ness Bansi cannot be learned. This is the lesson which shri Krishna gives through his bansuri. Regards
Thank you sir!! by seeing your video i managed to play jana gana mana song(2 lines) in my second day itself!!
Yesterday only i bought
Thank you sir so much. I also want to learn Basuri but unable to afford the classes. But u helped me in clearing the basics. Thanks a lot sir

Hello, you staed you were unsure about the role of the 7th hole.
When Pannalal Ghosh began inventing the longer bansuris around 1936, he used the seventh hole to expand the tonal range of the bansuri so it was more suitable to playing certain ragas. The finest bansuri player who uses the 7th hole in this tradition is Nityanand Haldipur, senior disciple to Annapurna Devi.
If you Google "Nityanand Haldipur Yamini" you can see the very deep and beautiful tones he obtains from the 7th hole in this exquisite version of Raag Yemen. Kindly, Matt in California.
Matt Dubuque thank you! Does the seventh hole give us an extra half note?
That depends on where the hole is placed. For example, in a Carnatic flute with 8 holes, the seventh hole gives a full note below the 6th. There is another important reason for the seventh hole which I have explained in a separate note.
Thanks for clarifying my doubt on playing sa re ga ma from both the ways.
+Darshit Mulani my pleasure.

Tell me sir
Sir....u are my guruji. I learnt many things from you. Please upload some more basic tutorial. It will help a lot. thank you again sir.
Wonderful I also learn to play the flute
Great video-- keep posting more-- can't thank you enough
Vishal, in my view you NEVER hold any musical instrument rigidly. The object is to make it as effortless as possible (without dropping it). :-)
Thank you for posting this video.I appreciate yr replying to the questions which makes me post mine.
1) I am 40 yrs & have started playing the bansuri about a week ago.I absolutely love it and want to explore it to the fullest. My ques: is it 'too late'?? As in i wish to take it up even professionally!
2) I am learning on the 'A' flute. Sa re ga ma is playing clearly, but pa dha ni san, is not happening very well.. Any tips on how to perfect the entire sargam?
Thank u so much for yr attention
@anathieeify Sorry about the ineaxct term "sharper blow." What I mean is, you have to blow harder to shift octaves (Saptak). Although, in the wester system of flute playing, you just change the structure of your mouth to shift octaves (google the word "Embouchure"), it does not seem to work for me in Bansuri.
Best Sir mai aapke bajane se sikha
@srinivasan1109 2 D should mean the D (Re of the Indian system) of the second octave on a keyboard. So your Sa should sound like the Re on a harmonium. I believe that is how it is done. One of the flute-makers I spoke with a while ago said it was a lot more complicated than that, but could not explain to me how. Anyone who knows better, please share with us.
sir thankyou for this video this is very helpful to me for playing bansuri
It’s awesome- plz upload more videos & keep going
first lesson good for starting for everyone.
thanks sir...... This video is very helpful for me.
I am not a singer so I could not tell you what effect bansuri could have on your singing. I was a heavy smoker when I first started playing bansuri in college. After quitting smoking, breath control became a lot easier, but I do not remember having any issues if I started playing bansuri right after smoking.
great tip sir. just began and got idea how to hold Basuri. Keep it up !
Super guruvugaru...
Its great for me. I need more lesson for learn bansuri..........

Thank you! This video was very helpful!
Thanks, really enjoyed your video, had to watch it a couple time to get the fingerings down.
@md88skater I prefer to get them from India. The flutes I have bought from Ali Akbar Khan School of Music (in California) and various other places have been unnecessarily expensive.
