  • Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 v Hilleberg Akto Premium tent review comparison - what are the differences?
Hi all, in this video I take a look at some of the main differences between the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 1 and the Hilleberg Akto. I wanted a 4 season tent and although I have never owned an Akto I thought it would be useful for those looking at these two wild camping tents to show what I discovered through my research of each. Take care everyone, I hope you are able to go backpacking / hiking or wild camping soon! Take care everyone, Si x

What i have seen is that the length is the same (220cm) but the akto is 10 cm more in width 75 for the vestibule and 90 for the inner tent while the abisko is 65+90. It wouldn't be a perfect fit but I guess I could make it work since the inner tent and the length is the same

First up, I have an Akto which I got secondhand (unused). As you mentioned the Akto material is heavier. This is a big difference between the two and I would say the Akto is stronger overall. The end poles are really not under any load but the sewn in poles (Akto) mean the tent can’t be stuffed. I always have the vents open so getting at them from the inside isn’t a concern. I didn’t compare the dimensions but the Akto is not a tent for tall folk so perhaps the Abisko is longer. So there are pros and cons with each - I’m happy with my Akto although I agree the Abisko has some nice features.

The akto material is twice as tough and waterproof as the abisko. I would have thought that strength and waterproofing is more important for 4 season use than weight and cost.

I would actually disagree. Seriously few people even live in an area where wind speeds get up strong enough to destroy far weaker tents than this. No one ever does artic expeditions in a one man tent lol. Pure bullshit. You need way more space. So for 99.99% of buyers a similar tent design with lighter materials makes WAY more sense.
I would love to own an Akto but honestly we rarely get a 50 Mph wind and it lasts for 10 minutes when a tornado lands lol. And I live in Winnipeg literally know as the windiest city in north America besides Chicago ....by actual consistent weather measurements.
Maybe folks in Ireland and the UK where it is windy as hell should prefer the hilleberg. But for the rest of us UV degrades ANY tent long before wind ever does. Even a starlight 2 tent would last nearly as long here because wind isn't going to be the limiting factor in when it gets destroyed. Fallraven is more than durable enough which they understood and was the entire purpose of them making the tent. Hillebergs are overkill.

Those look like they have terrible ventilation. Idk what you mean when you say they have good ventilation and then open a 10 inch horizontal slit that cannot be pulled open and secured in any way. They need to be able to open it in the verticle orientation as well to create a real ventilation window.

Interesting Simon.. crikey that's a lot of dollar for a smallish tent. I slept in my Terra Nova Zephyros 1 at the weekend, I found it incredibly small after using the MSR Elixir 1, no headroom, felt like a bivvy, it's only 1.5KG too but a 5th of the price of your one... Obviously the quality isn't there in the Terra Nova compared to this, the venting in the Zephyros is good but no access from the inner tent. Cool tent mate. Lee

I’m sorry Simon, you were talking about the little fiberglass poles at the end - they are indeed fiberglass. (I thought you were talking about the main pole of the tent. It was a bit late at night when I watched your video.) I myself really like the Akto, in very difficult circumstances, and it never let me down. Even the condensation isn’t an issue for me, and for my dog. And after all every design that looks alike, (I mean like the Akto) is a copy of the tent Bo Hilleberg invented/designed years and years ago. I think more than twenty years now … Fjallraven even named one of their tents after the very first Hilleberg, the Keb. Enjoy your Fjallraven, while the Akto people enjoy their Hilleberg. It’s mainly the same. And both of very sturdy quality. Thank you for your reaction on my first (dumb) comment.

”Keb” is short for Kebnekaise which is the highest mountain in Sweden. I don’t think Fjällräven took the name after Hilleberg. Both companies are making the best tents on the market and even if they are competitors, the company that owns Fjällräven (Fenix Outdoors) also sells Hilleberg tents in their stores (Naturkompaniet) in Sweden.

I bought my Enan in March 2020 & when I weighed it, it was an ounce or two heavier than the specs shown on the website so I emailed Hilleberg & was told that in late January 2020 or early February 2020, the floor material was changed to the same material as the Akto. Their website doesn't show that change so if you doubt my veracity you can & should email Hilleberg & ask for yourself.
TIP #1: I've learned to gather up 10 big heavy rocks B4 I begin to pitch the tent. This way, as soon as I pound a stake into the ground I can cover it with a nearby heavy rock. I never have to go back to re-stake because one loosened or pulled out of the ground during gusty windy weather conditions.
TIP #2: There are two supplementary tieout/guyout points at both ends. I've added guyout lines to the 2 tieout points at what is the "foot" end of the tent - the end facing into the wind. Those two extra guyout lines really help the tent to retain its shape even with strong gusty winds.
TIP #3: I discovered the fiberglass pole at the end of the tent facing into the wind will sink into "soft" ground it if wet which causes the tent to lose some tension during the night. I've learned to place a flat rock at the base of the fiberglass pole which in essence becomes a "foundation" for the fiberglass pole & it doesn't settle/sink into soft/wet ground. Pound on the flat rock until it is level with the ground then pitch your tent so that the fiberglass pole rests on top of the rock. Now when you tension the guyout lines, everything stays put & there is little need to go back later to add more tension unless there wasn't enough to begin with.
TIP #4: I, too, have the footprint attached to my tent even though I know the floor material is the same as the Akto. The footprint adds a mere 9oz (oooops) 255 grams. I especially like having the footprint covering the floor of the vestibule area.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

Hello. Assumes that it is the intention to close the zipper in the inner tent when you have opened the ventilation and that the ventilation is therefore only in relation to ventilation between the outside and the inner tent?
If the tent is wet when you have to hike on to the next place to stay, do you then pack it down together or do you dismantle the inner tent and pack it separately so that the inner tent is not wet when you pitch it later in the day?

Any one could do your research online. I’ve used them both in Arctic summer conditions and I know which tent I prefer. And it ain’t the copycat.
As for using in snow, no tent with that design is suitable. Snow will accumulate on the rather flat roof an force inner and outer fabric together. Making condensation drop down in to the tent.

@@SimonOutdoors I can´t resist investigate it a bit. On the website of Hilleberg, we can learn that the Hilleberg Akto was develloped since 1993 before it was launched to the market in 1995. It says pretty clearly that it was certainly designed by them. I suspect all that information about the history of that tent given on their website is there for a reason; to claim the design?
On the website of Fjallraven is a lot less to be found about the background of the Obisko Lite 1. I just sent them a message to ask them since when they carry the Obisko in their program and who designed it. If I get an answer, I´ll let you know.
I am a confirmed Hilleberg fan, fully rely on my Hilleberg Unna during all my sea kayak expeditions. But I also am a very happy user of Fjallraven clothing, for over 30 years now. So I feel simpathy for both brands. But to be very honest; those two tents are almost identical. It can´t have more than one original designer. And in general, I am not too impressed by copying and marketing someone elses ideas. For example, nowadays the cute little Kanken backpacks of Fjallraven can be bought on Alienexpress for only 10% of their original price. Even the washing label looks authentic, but of course they are not made by Fjallraven. I can´t believe Fjallraven is very happy with it. So let´s hope they aren´t doing something simular themselves.

I believe Fjallraven has problems to sustain consistent quality. Even more disappointing they have terrible customer relations.
I got my Abisko Lite 1 and at the first pitch discover that one corner pole (yellow) was so tight that once installed it was impossible to remove by applying any reasonable force. Three reminding corners were perfectly ok. Of course, I raised warranty issue. Fjallraven finally responded that this is not a defect since it is possible to use the tent with uninstalled pole. They advise was following - just roll tent around the poll and put it into sack. Technically it is possible but you can forget about small pack size in this case.

Finally, after some discussion with selling vendor sellers take a note of my dissatisfaction with Fjallraven and agreed to replace the faulty tent with Hilleberg Akto, subject to price adjustment.

Still haven't fixed the problem with the large unsupported sections of fabric. Both the akto and the abisko lite still have this problem. They are so flappy in the wind and also snow builds up on them too easy. In my opinion it is just bad design and people have bought into these bad designs for some reason. They are well constructed with high quality materials (especially the akto). That i have no doubt. But those large unsupported panels are just poor in the wind. Flap about all over the place.
