Extreme Tent Test of Budget vs. Premium | Vango Nevis & Hilleberg Akto
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- We went camping in some extreme conditions of wind, hail, snow and cold. I thought it would be cool to test a budget vs. a premium model at 600 metres up. The similar looking Vango Nevis 200 and Hilleberg Akto were pit against each other in this video. We were fully equipped for the cold with down jackets, warm ponchos and bivvy bags. Once the wind died down in the middle of the night I had to ditch all the extra warm gear in the tent. Although we woke up to ice all around us. This wild camping trip went a little wrong on a few occasions but those are the memorable ones!

The reason the nevis was so saggy inside was because both your end poles are suppose to be at an angle facing into the wind and away from the tent. Not straight or facing into the tent like yours were. My nevis withstood crazy winds on the Isle of skye, great little tents.
Ah I see thanks for the info
There are lessons to be learned here - but then we’d have missed out on the comedy! Laughed out loud when the camera closed in on his scrumptious steak and sausages after your little cup of pasta 🤣
Ha I always include the mistakes and hope not to make them next time! He smashed me on the food this time 🤣
The biggest lesson from this video is to always do a practice setup of a tent at home before you ever take it out on the hills, as another comment has said, the Vango was not set out correctly! Horrible weather! Would always recommend a self inflating sleeping mat rather than an airbed in those situations. Also an extra groundsheet is always recommended in those sort of conditions.
I could never get the hang of setting up the nevis. Other tents seem way easier in comparison. My fave combination is a reflective foam mat plus air mat. But I do like a cot quite often instead thanks for watching
I have the Nevis 200. Great wee tent - and much easier if you pitch it with the inner already attached.
That's true do you take it out to dry and reattach it?
If the tent is wet when I take it down, I’ll split it when I get home and dry the inner and outer separately. Then reattach ready for the next camp.
Nice one mate, this was a great watch!
Thank you pal! 😊👌
That Welsh wind looks crazy! We don’t get wind like that in southern Ontario Canada, or have hills like that either. Another great video!
We were up fairly high there and there's not many trees in the area so it's not sheltered
No-one has done a vlog on that I'm sure, so its something different for people to watch. You come home and the wife says where are you putting all that wet gear.
The wind looked crazy there mate 😂 as you said not a great sleep but that's the joys of wild camping haha looks a nice camp though 👍 all the best mate karl
It was a bit wild! Thats true its half the fun of wild camping 😂
Brilliant video boys, cracking location even if it is freezing and blowing a hooley. Back in the day my dad used to make me take a ‘cup a soup and smash’ 🤣! I see Druff has turned in to a camping snob 🙄😜 Great stuff as always 👍
Thanks man cup a soup and smash sounds good too ha!
Is that the same premium tent that I've had the honour of being in its presence 🏕
Great tent the vango is, when set up properly, I would never take an alcohol stove into the mountains though there is just no need.
I only used this tent once and got rid 😆 This stove is called a BCB it's what the army use. It's fire dragon fuel
Had the same tent, I used Dyneema guy lines for the TBS, also a groundsheet to help with condensation, strong warm tent for the money, but when I saw the part with the inner flapping and hitting you in the face, that brought back some memories 😂
Enjoyed the film, cheers for sharing, all the best for the Xmas and new year, have a good one 👍
Cheers some good improvements there but you can't do much about that low inner tent in the face 🤣
I have the cairngorm 100. I added peg points at the edges between the main pole and the small poles. The tent is now very solid indeed.
Great video guys. I love the poncho. I’ve done that mod to my jungle blanket .( wobbie). Great poncho liner.
Thanks dude nice to have things that are dual purpose to save carrying weight!
Great video.
I too have the Nevis 200, cracking little tent for the price. I always put the tension band through the top of the door and bring the zips upto it which means you don't have the dangling door when open. I also leave a couple of cm's of gap in the smaller door which helps with the condensation. I also got the matching footprint/groundsheet which also helped.
Hilleberg's are fantastic tents but very pricey. I also have a Vango Banshee which I tend to use in harsher conditions.
Have a great Christmas and look forward to more videos next year.
Cheers! I haven't tried the banshee that looks a cracking tent. Thanks for watching I've got plenty more ideas to come! 😊👊
@@MrWildWales look forward to them. The Banshee is very similar to the Nevis, slightly more hardcore but very little headroom. Have a great Christmas mate 👍
Cracking video and wild camp Adam. Enjoyed that mukka. Your knocking up the subscribers, be famous soon way your going lol. Don't forget us little buggers. SHOUT OUTS ha ha. Catch you soon pal 👍
Thanks mate yeah it's been kicking off lately 👌 I often give shout outs check out my page called 'rising stars' too 👍
@@MrWildWales where is that page to Adam?
@@CampNWildWithTheDragon On the bottom of my channel mate
Fabulous video, a pleasure to watch brother
Thanks very much mate 😊👍
I quite like a little porch in my tent to be honest mate, a good place to make a coffee.
Same here I prefer something a bit larger than this one
Awesome video 🏴🤜,was that the same night me and mr stubbs was up there though
Cheers! Yeah I think it was the same night!
🤣gutted we could have meet u and druffus might have remembered who I am🤣
Great fun!
I have the Cairngorm 100. The tension band is effective and useful.
Nice addition to have
Great stuff guys as always.
Hillies are great tents but they should be at the price.
I settled sort of in the lower middle price band with a Vaude Terratrio which Ive been chuffed with.
Up in one free standing makes a big difference to me in foul weather set up time .
Crazy that you mentioned that tent because I've got the Vaude Terra Hogan turning up today! It seemed like a great tent for the money
@@MrWildWales mine is the old 2p. so slightly different with sleeved poles
Hopefully you will not be disappointed.
I always sleep with my head by the door and good section of the mesh exposed.
Cant say I have had any real condensation probs even in cold weather
Looked at the Hogan and I feel it needs a few garden or indoor set ups to get the spine line hooking method off pat but its still easy to do
Yeah I had a Vaude Taurus 1. Not a drop of condensation ever.
That vango had a hammering didn't it, did u no the speed of the winds that night, good vid 👍👍👍
I'm not sure what it was but it was pretty strong! Lucky we were in that little sheltered bit
What bivy do you use in this video? Awesome vid 👍
This was a tyvek bivvy from aliexpress 😀
Nice one buddy. Shame there wasn't a bit more snow eh? That vango would've been on your face all night if if had. Flappy as...... 👍
Still chasing the snow this year I'm sure it will be back soon people seem to have had loads but none here yet
Good review dude, the only thing with silicon/or sil nylon tents they tend to absorb the water after a while and start to stretch, great tents tho
Thanks for the info!
hello adam good tents mate the pair of them was gunna get a nevis but what put me off was the tension straps and there wasn,t much room to cook if it was raining so i went for the oex bobcat 1 for the porch and it comes with a footprint it should of come today but it will probably be monday now but ill let you know how i get on with it allso got myself a new insta 360 one camara to try aswell
I wouldn't recommend a nevis myself. Good luck with the camera
@@MrWildWales thanx mate and the new bobcat 1
You didn’t put that tent up well at all lol. No tension at all which is why you had so much flapping around inside.
Also, burning a candle inside is going to create loads of condensation 🙄
Just breathing inside a tent causes condensation which is probably why it was all around my head area in the morning
@@MrWildWales how tall are you bud? I’m 6”2 and I find there are no reviews on backpacking tents that talk about suitability for taller people…
If you haven’t tried it already, I’d massively recommend the vango tempest 300 pro. With your head at the door end you don’t get any flappy bits over your head and there’s bags of room in the porch and sleeping compartment. Easy to put up as well
I'm 6 foot myself I find a few tents a bit tight but there's a few options out there. Sounds like a good one that
Nice comparison bud, just goes to show you don't need to spend a fortune on a tent to start with, the Vango Nevis is definitely a good starter tent, then save the pennies when you know what you want next. Nice to get a bit of snow at camp, I had plenty last weekend in the Scarp 1 🤣🤣 food looked awesome, great to warm you up in a cold camp 😁 keep up the good work pal, catch you soon, atb Paul 🙏🏕️🏕️🏕️😁
You've had way more snow than us so far we have only had a dusting! I haven't seen your vid yet I'll give it a watch now. Thanks for checking it out
I've got one of them ponchos they are great, i did a review on it.. Now back to your vid
It seems brill very nice and warm
@@MrWildWales they are I used mine as a quilt when i did a camp with tony hobbs in the summer..
@@Dazck9s Nice idea it's probably all you'd need in the summer
@@MrWildWales yes thats all I'll be taking
I have that camping chair, it's not bad, I had a thought one night that it could be integrated into the back of a backpack. Gotta be careful in that weather on the Beacons it can change to deadly quite quickly 🤔
That's a great idea there mate you could have one that folded down seeing as there's already a sturdy frame inside your rucksack 👍
@@MrWildWales Precisely 😎
The Nevis isn't a bad tent for the money but the main pole breaks easily due to the sharp bend.
Yeah I wouldn't recommend it
I just got the Nevis.
But for weather like that I'm glad I have an old school Force 10.
.....
Not that I'd dream of carrying that bugger up a hill!
Next time I'm up the mountain top I'll be taking my old field and trek pathfinder. It's about 30 years old and solid
That poncho is wkd fp Adam..
Kept me nice and warm that!
Next vlog - how to dry a tent out after a wet night on the hills please.
I'll see what I can do. It normally hangs upside down in the shed or out on the line though
I had a bargain bin tent from Wickes for a tenner it was good cept for pocket filling up with water when raining if you were quick to catch on you could have a quick cuppa tho one trip from Wales was eventful when my triagia meths stove made the tent shrivel up and catch fire sort of it was flame retardant fun tho and exciting even tho I got a bit burned 😅 the dog thought it was fun too abandon ship it got taken to a charity shop after Wales I can tell you
Love a bargain tent they are good fun lol
Came for the tent comparison, stayed for the Ronnie Coleman quotes.
Ha first person to spot where that was from lol
Why do you camp in nasty cold windy places lol.Theres a difference in tents there.Yours looks like it's worn out mate. Stretched material and bowing poles. Fair play though. Was just saying to the missis that air bed you have looks good and packed away small...Then it gave up the ghost .....Another good video mate.Keep them coming,We watch them all when we're not out in the sticks 👍
Has drewfus got a Jason Statham look going on stelthed up in the black tent.Spit of him lol Just seen his new film Wrath of man in Amazon prime tell him.
I like a challenge lol yeah I think the Vango would have looked alright if it wasn't next to a posh one. I've used that air bed about 10 times I think so it lasted a little while I would have liked more than that though! Thanks for watching 😊👌
Cant say I have ever heard of hilly burg either, Must be one of those generic Chinese brands 😂 I do like the design of those tents though, So far my Scarp has performed really well, just goes to show what decent build quality looks like though seeing them both side by side.
Ha got to wind each other up a little 🤣😉 To be fair the Hilleberg smashed the Vango in every way! Lots of people are getting the scarp now looks a versatile thing to be fair
Hilleberg wins then?
Easily
Great video. I know which one I'd rather be in 😁
Thanks mate 😊
