I lived on Hindry 2000-2003, with three dogs finding a house with a yard for $1k a mo was great. The noise was not that bad. I knew eventually we would be paid to move (I had owners who wanted property pay to move before). LAWA had lots of plans for the area (moving/adding runways, biz/hotel development) but needed to have the land before they could proceed. Then all the plans fell through so now it's in limbo.
Having crews show up and spend the night uprooting and moving houses was very surreal, about 3/4 of my street disappeared while I was there. Pretty soon my dogs had a 3 lot back yard to play in.
Lots of elderly homeowners were screwed by LAWA with lowball offers on their houses and lies that they had no choice. I helped a few negotiate better deals. Then as a renter (troublemaker) I got a $5k offer to move, but researched the HUD law that applies in these situations (based on difference of renting replacement) and ended up getting $38k! We put it down on a house, where I still live in a great Inglewood neighborhood Morningside Park.
So thanks to the guy that rented to me after I bugged and begged him, and thanks to HUD.

I lived there from the late 50's through the early '60s. Right on the corner of Hindry Ave. and Hindry Place. We moved away when I was 6 or 7. Went to K and 1st grade at 98th St. School. We left due to divorce and not because of the airport, but it's still sad to see the neighborhood gone. My earliest memories were there. Seeing Monty Montana and his lariat show on the school playground. Playing in the neighbor's "wine cellar" (bomb shelter) dug out under her dad's garage. Collecting tadpoles and playing Tom Sawyer in the storm run off collectors along Century Blvd. My Grandpa and I walking over to the Bowling Alley for hot chocolate (way before it was a porn palace). It's just a shame watching your childhood disappear.

I lived there from early '50's to early '70's. Great neighborhood with elementary school. Started downhill in '70's (developers building apartments), then houses started disappearing quickly. At 5:03 (Hindry Pl.), I lived one street over, on Glasgow Pl. LAX kills everything it touches.

Very interesting. Didn't realize this was happening, as I left LA 20 or so years ago. How strange it must be to be one of the few people still there.
    BTW, love your glasses.

You have motivated me to make a video about lack of city services in this area and neglect because the city doesn't have a firm plan and think no one lives here but a few home owners. There is still a large number of folks living here.

My parents remembered the buyout of homes in Long Beach to build the 405 in the 50's and I myself remember the destruction of properties to build the 105.

To anyone reading this in 2022 ... the neighborhood was eventually fully bought out. Built in its place is the almost finished (as of this writing) "Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility", aka CONRAC, which is a gargantuan building at the end of the tram that is also almost finished. The times, they did end up a changin'.

You should do revisit of this as now all the apartments are gone, streets are closed and LAX even bought out the Travelodge motel there. Very few people remaining so try interviewing them. I hear there's one apartment resident still living in one of the streets where apartments were on 99th Place and refuses to move.

I was born and raised in Westchester. Lived on 86th Pl for 30 years. In the late 90s LAWA finally got around to soundproofing our homes with new double pane windows and thicker doors. Part of the jet noise class action lawsuits stemming back from years prior since the 1960s.

I lived here in the 80s as I go and its nothing but a ghosttown I see houses my old friends used to live in and the all abandoned ! It was a good neighborhood when it existed! If you used to live here when it was an existing neighborhood don't come here drunk you'll probably get too sentimental! Good film tom !

I went to school there and also most of the abandoned houses are used for training LAPD. I know because when they would train, we would be in lockdown.

Hi Tom, Thanks for sharing this video. I lived here for 12 years as a renter not owner and LAWA is not concerned with the people who rent. This is disturbing because I asked for retrofitting and was told I didn't qualify since I was a renter. So my children didn't have the same opportunity to live in a quiet neighborhood as those children in the other areas like Kentwood.

I'm on Ramsgte off Manchester Bl. The owner of the building sold this property in 2015. New owners bought it. But in October 2017 . Still new owners bought this place and gave us 90 notice to move. They are relocating us. As of today Nov 2017 they have given us an extension til July 2018. But then they want us all out !

thanks for always finding interesting places to represent los angeles. they say we have no history, no culture, but you're actively working to turn that notion on its head. how about something about the old subway and real system? before all the old tunnels are filled?

This isn't Manchester Square, at least not the one recognized by the city. That one is further east, east of Inglewood. This is west of Inglewood. Is there another name for this area?

Had a friend who lived here in the late 80s . Was a pretty good hood then. A lot of duplexes and elderly residents. Funny thing is ..... I don't remember a lot of aircraft noise at that time. I work near there now and it has been taken over by homeless people. Tents and motor homes everywhere. Garbage all over the place. Looks bad. If they are going to allow homeless to stay there. (which is not a bad thing) they should provide a couple of basic services. Like a trash pick up point. There is a LOT of trash there now.

Nah- I don't mind! She was Brenda O'Connor. She was a hottie! Had just come out from Rhode Island. She had a nice apt. on the southeast corner of the tract. And next door to her was a house with an elderly couple in it. I remember they had the most beautiful yard I'd ever seen. Lots of plants and trees. But problems were starting, She came home from work and set her purse onto the coffee table Turned to set some other things down. Said a black man ran in and grabbed her purse!

Anazman i lived off of aviation blvd. & 98th st . and 98th st school was my school. in the late 80s . even tho the movie sandlot was based in the 60s ( i think) it reminds me of my kud days with my buddies going to every hotel's swimming pool in the summer on century blvd. by the time we get kicked out of the hotel cause we were street kids and not customers , by the time we kicked out the last hotel on century the sun would be going down so that would be a wrap and we do it again tje next day! ahahaaaaa

Actually looks like Detroit, but cleaner. For real. Detroit fell into decline and as homes were abandoned, they got torched, one by one. Often as insurance scams and often on "Devil's night" (Halloween) by the idle kids looking for a thrill. Thus Detroit looks just like Westchester Square. A lone house or two or an apartment surviving on a block of grass or rubble. The neighboring Travel lodge motel is being dismantled as I write this.
