update: I've been here 3 times since watching your video Tom. it never gets old and it's a great hike up and down those stairs! the only downside is that it's not so much of a secret anymore. I went there yesterday which was a Tuesday, at 1 p.m., and there were three other groups of people there. All youngsters/ whippersnappers, high school age.
The thing I find amusing is Tom says " to call this place a liability is an understatement " then he urges you to visit it before it falls down pretty much . hmm, it's so dilapidated it could fall in on you so go there .....
Totally bizarre. I lived the first 35+ years of my life in L.A., always sought out interesting out of the way places (Trapper's, etc.), and NEVER heard of this before now. Well done, Tom.
One of the hikes in the "Secret Stairs of Los Angeles" book by Charles Flemming. Been there, there are 2 set of stairs each about 400+. In the wonderful Pacific Palisades area, Dennis Tito, first paying Astronaut on the Russian Soyuz lives nearby.
There are a couple of broken down driveways that lead off of PCH between Santa Monica and Malibu. Someone told me about the Murphy Ranch and that it was "in the Santa Monica mountains" and I thought maybe one of them lead to it, but looking at the map I guess not. I'm still curious what those derelict driveways might lead to though....
There is an even bigger and darker backstory to this. Hitler really did expect to conquer America and had assigned a cadre of people who would act as commanders over the various sections of the USA; these people were trained in the political, geographic, demographic details of the regions they were to supervise once Hitler conquered America. Apparently, one of the American soldiers at the end of World War II fortuitously met one of these future "commanders" who knew all about the Meriden, Bristol, Waterbury area of Connecticut, anticipating being commander of that region; as he spoke to the German fellow, he discussed Hitler's plan for he conquest of the USA>
Dave Bass Fascinating. Reading Dave's book the Rustic Canyon chapter was interesting. Glad I found this video. Those concrete stairs went up almost vertical. Trip on a shoe lace and you're a goner.
Did you guys need a permit to shoot this? I'm trying to shoot something for school & Film LA told me I need a permit from Film LA but also from whatever park is in charge of it. I can't seem to track down a rec center/rangers office that will claim they have anything to do with it. Might just have to do it on the dL but I'd really prefer to have my bases covered. Thanks!
Cathaaayyyy Once you walk past the Power House you come across the rusted ruins, from there you keep on with the path and the path slowly turns into a small trail basically meant for one person at a time for about 1/4-1/2 of a mile, you keep following this trail until you reach a clearing and the barn will be on your right side.
Cool video by the way. This is the first time I watched one of your videos. I don't know how you film the other episodes, but it would've been nice to see more of this compound. I feel like a lot of the video was clips of you walking or climbing onto things.
Nice video, but Murphy Ranch area is "barely" in LA. It's in pacific palisades on the santa monica mountain foothills. It's bufferred by very expensive homes. Anyhow, keep up the good work.
Please be nice when you visit. Murphy Ranch is a city park inside the Topanga State Park and is open during daylight hours only. It is not ok to spray paint anything there or on your way there.
When their today my first time but didn't make it to the main gate 😢 which I really wanted to go to saw the powerhouse but unfortunately its shut from everywhere now buy a great experience recommended to anybody oh & the stairs suck
Not something worth preserving anyway lol if anything the graffiti makes it more interesting because you see people have been there and know about something most people don't know about anymore
I wish I lived in California. But then again... I get to explore abandoned steel factories and the infamous Centralia. (I'm from PA) Did you know that during WWII, the Nazis successfully landed in the U.S.? It was a small group, and they gave themselves up before they could do anything. Haha
Fascinating history to Centralia, Sully. There was a nice piece on NPR recently about the people that stayed. I'd like to visit some day. Not sure I would be ready to live there, though!
Who owns the property? It looks like many millions of dollars in real estate sitting unused. It's cool that it hasn't been turned into a generic housing development, but hard to figure that someone could own it, pay really large property taxes, and not make any use of it.
I was there today in March 13th 2022 - I'm telling you - this place has a strange aura about it's creepy AF.
Just an update all structures are fenced now and people are getting citations for trespassing

where is this place?
Pacific Palisades, lmgtfy.com/?q=murphy+ranch
Yet another wonderful episode. Thanks!
Went on the adventure today and loved it. Thanks for a terrific video.
Came here after seeing Adam the Woo's Video on the Murphy Ranch,,,, you explained so much past detail... thank you,,,,,, Sass
I think you're super awesome for creating awareness to all these cool, kinda secret, gems of Los Angeles.
Hey Tom, have you been back since they took out the gate and the water tank? Kind of a bummer.
The thing I find amusing is Tom says " to call this place a liability is an understatement " then he urges you to visit it before it falls down pretty much . hmm, it's so dilapidated it could fall in on you so go there .....
Bill D. He obviously meant it is a liability to the name of the city of Los Angeles and to visit before they tear it down and it ceases to exist.
Love your videos! Informative, visually beautiful, and interesting :)
Really interesting stuff! Another great episode.
Thanks Tom and your team for these amazing videos! Keep up the great work. Just subscribed, looking forward for more videos!
Totally bizarre. I lived the first 35+ years of my life in L.A., always sought out interesting out of the way places (Trapper's, etc.), and NEVER heard of this before now.
Well done, Tom.
Digging the hip Huell Howser vibe
Check out our video called Unfound. Pro Parkour Athlete Jesse La Flair went and shot an incredible parkour and freerunning video at this location.
Have you found any historic images of what Murphy Ranch looked like after it was built?
Very informative tom.! You really researched and I'm hooked on them.
I read about this place in the book "Weird LA", apparently the main house burned down years ago, all that's left now are a few out-buildings.
A genuine Thank You, Tom. Great video. Subbed!
Can someone please please please tell me what cover of gloomy Sunday played in the song.
It sounds like the Hal Kemp Orchestra version. I hope you were able to figure that out before now :)
Tom your videos are AMAZING! Please continue sharing Los Angeles' many hidden secrets and gems.
Thanks Tom this is professional quality no nonsense narration with video. I enjoyed every second.
Looking forward to Season 2.

Tom: There is another potential Nazi redoubt nearby. West and North of Will Rogers State Park. Start at Camp Josepho and go south along the stream.
thinking about go tonight to paint. where do we park?!

I love the abandoned camp! Favorite place to hike in LA!!!
This film, feels claustrophobic now wide angles

Interesting and enjoyable, but wish you had told us why the Murphy Ranch fell into disrepair.
song name in beginning?
You should do another sweet video on the Gaffey Pool in San Pedro
Great video keep them coming
Chapter 11, "Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon." Dig it.
Dave Bass Fascinating. Reading Dave's book the Rustic Canyon chapter was interesting. Glad I found this video. Those concrete stairs went up almost vertical. Trip on a shoe lace and you're a goner.
Too bad the City demolished most of the structures.
That horse stable has some weird vibes.
I've been there twice and have never seen that barn or the stable. Where are they?
Is that maps link accurate?
I wonder who owns that property now.
Very cool, thank you.
What day was this video shot ?
I see a lot of recyclables there... seems like a waste to let them rot like that.
Music through out the video ?
everything is now locked up in fences, cut through though
George McFly does urbex! XD ...Seriously though, cool vid, subscribed. ;)
lol at 1:00 that's Julian Blanc!
i went to murphy ranch at 11 pm alone the other day

HELTER SKELTER!
The Google maps link doesn't take me to the right place
It's an interesting post and an excellent choice nonetheless
Arthur Silva It does.
Does anyone know how to get to the barn? I couldn't find it

what old timey song was playing?
Which one? The one playing during the first four minutes is Gloomy Sunday. Elmer's Tune is listed, but I didn't hear it played.
so many awesome writers! Nek , script , aidz , jabber , Ihate just so cool #losangelesgraffiti
mystery....
Very good! Kinda creepy.

But the Pacific Palisades are a part of the City of Los Angeles.
Evidently Charlie Manson and his crew might have spent a summer there.
Please be nice when you visit. Murphy Ranch is a city park inside the Topanga State Park and is open during daylight hours only. It is not ok to spray paint anything there or on your way there.
People with money often looking for meaning or purpose in their lives. Many of the places Tom visits are spooky, know only to the homeless.
at night it’s a different story , plz be careful & safe 🙏
When their today my first time but didn't make it to the main gate 😢 which I really wanted to go to saw the powerhouse but unfortunately its shut from everywhere now buy a great experience recommended to anybody oh & the stairs suck
2 thumbs up good music nice clean shoots
Another historical site gone to the graffiti thugs
grandmama536 im a unapproachable thug
graffiti thugs 😂
As said above GRAFITTI THUGS!
plus the trash they drag in....
Not something worth preserving anyway lol if anything the graffiti makes it more interesting because you see people have been there and know about something most people don't know about anymore
The host looks like a young Walter White.
It ain't no Spahn Ranch....well it kinda is....
Talking about Nazis while sporting a, how can I put this... "Charlie Chaplin" moustache. Nice touch.
I wish I lived in California. But then again... I get to explore abandoned steel factories and the infamous Centralia. (I'm from PA) Did you know that during WWII, the Nazis successfully landed in the U.S.? It was a small group, and they gave themselves up before they could do anything. Haha

Damn I didn't even know wtf
Came here because of Jordan Maxwell!!
Subscribed ☑️ You're fucking awesome
Wikipedia?, really accurate
