  • Honda V6 Valve Adjustment you need to check to see if the valve lash needs to be adjusted before adjusting the valve lash. Both the intake and exhaust valves most likely need to be adjusted but sometimes you get lucky and run into a situation like this. On your Honda Accord Odyssey Pilot Ridgeline Acura MDX RL CL TL.

    I just did a complete head job on my J32A3. CYL-6 had misfire only during start-up and up to a minute. The oil sample report indicated coolant in it. I did compression test, cooling system pressure test & cooling system exhaust gas test, all of which came out negative. No white smoke from the tail pipe, no bubbling at the radiator filler neck either. My engine has only 230K miles, and I expected a Honda engine to last at least 300K miles without a major work.
    I bought new raw heads & transplanted everything else. The head gaskets were intact, but the front head was very slightly beyond limit. There were undeniable traces of coolant seepage on CYL-6. After this back-breaking job, the engine seems to run smoother & quieter. However, I adjusted the valve lash to perfection but compression on CYL-3 went down from 270 PSI to 240 PSI. I rigorously checked all valves & valve seat mating surfaces before installing the heads, and didn't find any issues but here I am. At least the engine is running better than before.
    Another thing I noticed during this job is that the EGR port on the J-Series engines is directly connected to CYL-6 (which I'm sure you know), and if the coolant passage gasket fails, it could have misfire on CYL-6 by allowing coolant to enter the EGR port when it opens. Someone experiencing misfire on CYL-6 should check/replace this gasket before removing heads.
    BTW, I use angled feeler gauge (available at Amazon) and Blue Point's valve adjusting tool, YA8895. The Blue Point is expensive and there is an alternative at Amazon at a fraction of Blue Point's price. I went with Blue Point because I support U.S manufacturing (and I'm a Japanese native).

    I had to do a vvt solenoid replace on a 3.5 and to do that you have to remove the rocker arm. My question is when I go put the new solenoid and rocker arm back on and torque to spec do I need to adjust the valves too?

    Are the valve cover and spark plug tube gaskets usually okay to re-use?

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  3 роки тому +1

      No I would not reuse them. You run the risk of an oil leak if you reuse your old valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals. Just buy the Kit by Fel-Pro that comes with everything. You can get it from Amazon or RockAuto.com

    I had to swap out the front cylinder head due to a broken bolt that messed up one of the holes. I transferred the camshaft , and arm rocker to the new head. After assembling camshaft and arm rocker I can’t rotate the camshaft it is too tight and jumps when I’m trying to rotate it. I need help on this .

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  2 місяці тому

      Did you do a valve adjustment? It will be really hard to rotate it on the bench, gotta have the head on an engine block.

    Help, please. My car was ticking on idle and ticks louder when im accelerating. The idle tick is gone after replacing the timing tensioner. But it still tick when i accelerate past 1500rpm. Could this be my valves? 2011 pilot.
    What is a fair price to get the valves adjusted? Google is saying $250-300, but i see in some forums they can be as high as $600. I really dont want to pay too much to get it adjusted.
    I see another video where he cranked the crankshaft to each cylinder prior to adjusting. Does this need to be done?

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes you have to rotate the engine (by hand) to each cylinder so you can measure and adjust each valve on intake and exhaust. If you have never done it and your not comfortable doing it, don’t do it. If you get it wrong, you can destroy or hurt your engine. I charged $700 for a valve adjustment on a newer Odyssey, cause the back cylinder head has to be done blind, just by feel. Took me half the day to do it.

      A nut is a nut. A bolt is a bolt. As long as the “grade” is the same, you’re fine. There’s no “Honda” nuts and there’s no “Chevy” nuts. They all come from the same place.

      You can use printer paper if you know what the thickness is. Don’t adjust valves without proper tools. No sense of tearing apart an engine if you don’t have the tools to put it back together correctly…”eye ball” would be your best guess probably 👍🏼

    Hey got a quick question, what is a reasonable price for this job at Honda dealership? I was under the impression I was looking at around 200-300$. I called the Honda place this morning and they quoted me 475$. This is for a 4 cylinder accord. A 2004 model. Does this sound overpriced to you?

    • @zayas6999
      @zayas6999 2 роки тому

      No that seems pretty good to me. We charge 2.4 hrs for 4 cylinder and 5.5 for V6. (I'm an Acura tech in so Cal) I think it's pretty good considering it's done right the first time and then you have a warranty in the unlikely event of a valve cover leak or something similar.

      Double check and see what the adjustment is. There should be a sticker on your hood that shows what the intake and exhaust valve lash adjustment is.

    What if you can’t fit a feeler gauge underneath? Need to turn the motor? Or valve burnt?

      On the J Series you have to make sure the front camshaft is lined up with the specific number cylinder you are working on. Here is the cylinder order for the J Series.
      FIREWALL
      1 2 3
      4 5 6
      RADIATOR

    • @matthewstorm5188
      @matthewstorm5188 2 місяці тому

      Provided you are adjusting the right cylinder for the cam and crank position, not being able to fit the correct size feeler gauge means that the valve is tight. Valves normally tighten with time as a result of valve seat recession. If the valve is tight, you must loosen the locknut and adjust that valve using the correct size feeler gauge.
      I should note that a tight valve COULD be burned. This is not likely the case unless the valve clearance is ZERO. But you generally know by the way the engine runs (ie a miss that clears up at higher RPMs) whether or not you have a burnt valve.
